This past summer, Tee Morant, the father of Ja Morant, was speaking at the Up Next Elite Camp in New Orleans and was letting players know how their decisions would impact them. During the conversation, Morant revealed his son’s suspension resulted from his actions.

“Make sure anytime y’all anywhere, know the capabilities of everybody around you,” Tee Morant said. “My son didn’t get in trouble for the people around him, he got in trouble for his decisions so, always be mindful of every decision y’all make. Because, it could pretty much, take over you and can consume you and make you think that you’re who you’re not.”

Morant added, “The smallest thing you can do can make the biggest difference in your life.”

Recently, Ja Morant got some new ink. Hitting Instagram, @Ortega_Ink has displayed Morant’s new tattoo, a back-spanning piece that brings in his Nike logo, AAU team, jersey number, and logos associated with Kobe Bryant. One portion of his back is the number “24” with “Mentality” inked across the top.

Additional parts of the tattoo are the Memphis Grizzlies logo, his home state of South Carolina, and the words “Life’s a Gamble.”

Today In Hip Hop History: PMD Dropped His Debut Solo LP ‘Shadē Business’ 29 Years Ago

Screen Shot 2023 09 27 at 7.46.24 AM

On this date in 1994, Parrish “PMD” Smith of the legendary Long Island rap duo EPMD released his first solo album after his split from Erick Sermon entitled Shadē Business under the RCA Records umbrella.

This LP received less than its fair share of fanfare, peaking at number 42 on the Billboard 200 with no “crossover” single, ironically a term coined by EPMD just two years earlier on their last album together. Even with solid, exclusive production from EPMD’s own DJ Scratch, Shadē Business’ Zoneside vs. Darkside concept did not grab the ears of Hip Hop fans who were due to hear another “Business” album from the “brothers from Brentwood, Long Island”.

The 14-track album featured the likes of DJ Mark the 45 King, Jesse West and the Hit Squad’s most recent signees at the time, Das EFX.

Salute to PMD, Scratch, Das EFX and the rest of the Hit Squad for this piece of Hip Hop History!

Vic Mensa Details Embracing Sobriety on the Road to His New Album ‘VICTOR’

Vic Mensa Details Embracing Sobriety on the Road to His New Album 'VICTOR'

Vic Mensa pulled up on Ebro Darden on Apple Music 1 to speak about his new album VICTOR. During his time on the platform, Vic Mensa detailed his desire to get sober.

“I definitely have a different sense of clarity and a different sense of focus than I’ve ever had before,” Mensa said. “And I think a lot of that came from sobriety for real. And so I’m two years sober, I just passed that milestone about a week ago. Alcohol, and weed, and pills, and all that type of s**t. I started practicing Islam in that same point in time. And above all, I made a decision to cut out all the shit in my life that was not actively serving a purpose, not actively bringing me towards my goals.

“And I come to realize that a lot of those things that created issues in my life were just ways of running from something, ways of masking some emotion, or hiding some insecurity, forgetting about it for a few minutes. And facing fear though is what takes you to another level.”

Earlier this month, Vic Mensa has unleashed his long-awaited sophomore album, VICTOR, under the Roc Nation banner. Executive produced by BongoByTheWay and predominantly self-produced during sessions spanning from Chicago to Los Angeles and even Ghana, the album represents a two-year journey of introspection and newfound sobriety for the accomplished MC.

“This album is a story of redemption; trial and triumph, pain & glory,” says Mensa. “It was forged from the rubble of a bad crash, literally and metaphorically, and follows my journey into spirituality, a return to Chicago, a return to Ghana and a rediscovery of myself.”

The album’s thematic depth is vividly portrayed through its striking cover artwork, a life-sized painting by Terron Cooper Sorrells (@ronronart), depicting Mensa as Osiris, the Egyptian God of the Dead, who was torn apart and reassembled by his wife Isis. This mirrors Mensa’s own quest for redemption, where he has assessed his role in the setbacks and trials he’s faced. He has been working tirelessly both internally and externally to drive positive change through social work, sobriety, and a deep exploration of his cultural roots, which led him to Ghana.

Preceded by a string of impactful singles, VICTOR includes collaborations with various artists, including Chance the Rapper, G-Eazy, Ty Dolla $ign, and more. With its profound themes and diverse influences, this album marks a significant milestone in Vic Mensa’s musical journey, showcasing his evolution as an artist and a person.

On this unforgettable journey, the tour’s second stop took a unique turn, transforming into an epic pool party at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tampa.

Breaking away from the typical arena performances, this tour stop offered fans a distinctive experience as they basked in the Florida sun poolside, sipping signature cocktails or relaxing on ledge loungers submerged in up to nine inches of crystal-clear water. The change of scenery and atmosphere brought out a new energy in the rap icons, infusing the performance with a summer party aura.

The festivities began with an elite DJ set from DJ Scratch that took the crowd on a journey through 50 years of hip-hop hits from all corners of the nation.

De La Soul, a recent addition to the tour, opened the show, bringing in a surprise special guest, Talib Kweli, who assisted in delivering De La’s hits and even treated the audience to “Get By” from his own repertoire.

Following this engaging set, Wu-Tang Clan emerged on the stage, led by RZA, who ignited the crowd with “Bring Da Ruckus,” setting the tone for an unforgettable performance. Maintaining an element of surprise, Wu-Tang Clan showed up fully and thrilled the audience by bringing out Method Man during “Wu-Tang Clan Ain’t Nuthing Ta F’ Wit.”

After Wu-Tang Clan’s explosive performance, Nas made his grand entrance, representing Queensbridge and even teasing the idea of taking a dip in the pool with the ecstatic fans. The excitement peaked when, early in his set, Nas, flanked by DJ Green Lantern, followed up “The Message” with the electrifying “Hate Me Now.” Nas, dressed in a white tee, heavy chains, and shorts, embraced the Tampa sun and assured fans that the temperature wouldn’t be the same for the rest of the tour.

The New York legends Nas and Wu-Tang Clan would take turns on stage, delivering classics from their extensive catalogs. The audience was treated to a spectacular musical journey with hits like “If I Ruled the World” and “C.R.E.A.M.,” “NY State of Mind” and “All I Need,” “The World is Yours” and “Shame on a Nigga,” “Ice Cream” and “Got Ur Self a Gun.” The show reached its pinnacle when Raekwon and Nas shared the stage for a spellbinding rendition of “Verbal Intercourse.”

MF DOOM’s Son Daniel Dumile Jr. Speaks On His Art Tribute To His Father

Screen Shot 2023 09 26 at 10.46.11 AM

Since 2021, the untimely death of Hip Hop icon MF DOOM, the cult following that he created before his passing continues to keep his legacy alive and current. However, his artistic passion has been inherited by his firstborn son, Daniel Dumile Jr.  As an artist, Daniel Jr. has become an established force in his own right, but as the successor of the DOOM legacy and the Metal Face brand, the depth and meaning behind the mask can only be explained by the first descendant of DOOM.

Daniel Jr. sat down with The Source Magazine to discuss his most recent art exhibit dedicated to his father and his tribute piece for Hip Hop’s most unrecognizable villain.

Daniel teased an exhibit dedicated to his father earlier this year, but felt that the presentation wouldn’t be complete without his signature tribute piece. When asked why he waited until now to release his tribute piece, Dumile Jr. replied, “It took a minute to get settled after I left the uk. I had the idea to
produce a series of paintings in 2015. For around three years since then I would spend a chunk of my time in the states and rest abroad. Between going to work with my pops, traveling to visit elders, family
losses and the pandemic, I had no time to dedicate towards what I needed to do.”

The tribute is the cornerstone of Dumile’s exhibition dedicated to DOOM; however, his explanation of the mask and the man behind its creation seems a bit deeper than how its been explained in his father’s music. The Metal Face heir’s explanation is elaborate yet practical, saying, “The piece focuses on the idea of the villain. The ellipsis after the word villain serves as an indicator of something more or something being left out.” Daniel further expounds on the villain character, saying, “Villain then ellipsis means villain, then, unexpected/unapparent. The villain character in stories shows the other side of the hero or the side that everyone may not “like”. The tribute piece consists of four main layers that build on a central idea. They all need to be recognized  to get the full picture.”

Fans and critics will always look for the similarities between the father and the son to see the remnants of the art they once revered. Dumile’s demeanor, voice, and even creative process almost mirrors his dad’s. He admits that his value system of “knowledge of self” was instilled in him during the making of Operation Doomsday, adding, “The DOOM style is an off the beaten path style. I watched/listened to my father apply these ideas to his career. I try to apply them visually. The recording of Operation: Doomsday spanned from the early mid nineties to the late nineties. I was given knowledge of self from my grandmother and old dad during that period. At the same time I was being exposed to the “hood”.  My dad showed me how to transfer the feeling of that situation and our ghetto life experiences, into artwork.”

Daniel Dumile Jr.’s artwork is available HERE

The date of the tribute piece’s release has yet to be confirmed.
