Janelle Monáe Tells Herself To Stay Off Social Media When She’s Ovulating

Between her role in Glass Onion, new music on the way, and topless birthday party, Janelle Monáe is on top of the world right now. Another thing she’s on top of is managing her social media usage, thanks to self-imposed rules like staying off it while she’s ovulating.

Towards the end of her The Late Show interview last night (January 11), Stephen Colbert noted that Monáe recently shared an oft-cited David Bowie quote on social media: “If you feel safe in the area you’re working in, you’re not working in the right area. Always go a little further into the water than you feel you’re capable of being in. Go a little bit out of your depth. And when you don’t feel that your feet are quite touching the bottom, you’re just about in the right place to do something exciting.”

Colbert then asked Monáe if she leaves other notes for herself, so she pulled out her phone and went through a few. They included, “Do not go on social media during ovulation” (which was not explained further), “Just because you can say something, doesn’t mean you should say it,” and, “I have the power to say no.”

The Weeknd Revealed He’s ‘Been In The Studio’ Working On New Music Amid Oscars Buzz

The Weeknd just celebrated the one-year anniversary of his fifth studio album, Dawn FM, but it looks like a new era may soon be upon us. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he revealed that he has begun working on new music.

“I’ve definitely been inspired,” he said. “I’ve been in the studio.”

Earlier in the interview, he shared that this bout of inspiration has been largely in part to being placed on the shortlist for the upcoming Academy Awards. His song, “Nothing Is Lost (You Give Me Strength),” which was used as the theme for Avatar: The Way Of Water.

“I feel honored to be part of that list,” he said. “Any kind of recognition for it feels like a blessing.”

The original Avatar premiered in 2009, which The Weeknd said was a dark time in his life. At the time, he had dropped out of high school and wasn’t sure where his musical endeavors.

“I didn’t know if I was going to be able to live to see tomorrow,” he said. “And I remember I somehow got to see the film in theaters. I don’t know how I got in. It was such an escape from my real life that the film is tattooed in my brain.”

Landing his song in the second movie sure feels like a full-circle moment for the pop star.

Rihanna Loved Jerrod Carmichael’s ‘Very Controversial’ Joke About Her Upcoming Album At The Golden Globes

At the 2023 Golden Globes last night (January 10), Rihanna’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever song “Lift Me Up” didn’t take home the award for Best Original Song, Motion Picture. She still stole the show, though, by getting multiple shout-outs during the broadcast. That included one from host Jerrod Carmichael, who cracked a joke that Rihanna fans are probably wishing he hadn’t.

Addressing Rihanna between awards, Carmichael said, “You know what? Honestly, only because I see Rihanna is here, and I’m gonna say… I’m gonna say something very controversial that… I will actually get in trouble for this: Rihanna, you take all the time you want on that album, girl. Don’t let these fools on the internet pressure you into nothing!”

As Carmichael got to the part about his comment being “controversial,” Rihanna smiled as she waited for the punchline. When that dropped, she gave a laugh and a clap, putting her hands on her face and saying something to the people around her.

As for those fools on the internet, they don’t seem to feel the same as Carmichael. One Rihanna fan wrote, “Who this [clown] Jerrod Carmicheal calling a fool? Talking bout ‘don’t let these fools on the internet pressure you into nothing.’ Rihanna owes us that album and we need it ASAP!” Even the Golden Globes themselves got in on the moment, tweeting, “Jerrod Carmichael may want you to take your time but we’d like that album ASAP.”

Rihanna, Taylor Swift, And Lady Gaga Lost At The Golden Globes To An Extremely Popular Song You May Not Have Heard Of

The 2023 Golden Globe Awards ceremony took place last night (January 10), and while the proceedings are focused on TV and movies, music makes its way into the mix, too. Specifically, there are two music categories: Best Original Score, Motion Picture and Best Original Song, Motion Picture. The former was won by Justin Hurwitz’s work on Babylon.

As for the latter, songs by Taylor Swift (“Carolina” from Where The Crawdads Sing), Rihanna (“Lift Me Up” from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever), and Lady Gaga (“Hold My Hand” from Top Gun: Maverick) were in contention. None of those ended up winning, though. Instead, the Best Original Song award went to Kala Bhairava, M. M. Keeravani, and Rahul Sipligunj’s “Naatu Naatu,” a Telugu-language song from the hit 2022 Indian movie RRR.

While “Naatu Naatu” may not be backed by the star power of a song by Gaga, Rihanna, or Swift (among American/English-speaking audiences, at least), it has achieved massive popularity with over 111 million views on YouTube. That puts it right up there with its competitors: “Hold My Hand” has 138 million views while “Lift Me Up” is at about 92 million and “Carolina” has around 8 million.

Rihanna was in attendance and was a good sport, as she made sure to offer her congratulations to the folks behind RRR.

Meanwhile, RRR was also up for Best Picture, Foreign Language, but that award went to Argentina, 1985.

Seth Meyers Was Super Impressed By Lizzo’s ‘Class Act’ Apology To His Father After Drunkenly Calling Him A ‘B*tch’

Back in December, Lizzo visited Late Night With Seth Meyers. During the “Day Drinking” segment, the two enjoyed some day drinks, and left a drunk voicemail to Meyers’ dad. This past weekend, Meyers was asked by fans about the voicemail and how his father reacted to it during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen,

Meyers and Cohen recalled Lizzo saying “Bye, b*tch,” before hanging up the phone.

“Lizzo then, independent of me knowing, reached out to the show, and found out my dad’s address,” Meyers said. “Lizzo sent flowers to my father with a note that said ‘I’m sorry I called you a b*tch.’ That is a class act.”

Last year was one of the biggest years of Lizzo’s career, as she released her long-anticipated sophomore album, embarked on the Special tour, and won an Emmy for her reality competition, Watch Out For The Big Grrrls. In April, she will kick off the second leg of her tour, appropriately called the Special 2our, with dates in North America and the UK.

In the meantime, you can watch the clips from Late Night With Seth Meyers and Watch What Happens Live above.

‘Colbert’ Made Perfect Use Of DJ Khaled Clips To Recap Kevin McCarthy’s Drawn-Out Bid To Become Speaker Of The House

Over the weekend, Kevin McCarthy was elected Speaker Of The House. It took four days and 15 votes to get here, but here we are. Now the late-night shows have gotten a hold of the news and run with it on their Monday (January 9) episodes, including The Late Show. Steven Colbert’s staff’s take on the situation made use of some choice DJ Khaled clips.

The brief segment is introduced, “And now, a summary of Kevin McCarthy’s bid to become Speaker Of The House, featuring DJ Khaled.” From there, a Khaled-style instrumental played under news clips about the McCarthy proceedings, and as the various anchors share news of each subsequent vote, a Khaled clips interjects with one of the producer’s classic catchphrases: “Another one.” The video ends with an anchor noting, “The concessions to the right that led to his victory could leave him the weakest Speaker in modern history.” To that, clip Khaled responded, “Congratulations: you played yourself.”

As for what Khaled has been up to lately, he was recently pretty happy after buying Eminem’s Nike Air Jordan 4 “Encore” sneakers. Meanwhile, looking forward, he’s one of the most-nominated hip-hop artists at the upcoming 2023 Grammy Awards.

They Said ‘Avatar’ Has No Cultural Impact, But Now Lizzo Is Doing Na’vi Thirst Traps And We Don’t Know What To Believe

The original 2009 Avatar movie and the new Avatar: The Way Of Water film are both major hits. Box office numbers don’t lie. Regardless, there have been questions about what cultural impact the series (the first movie, more specifically) has actually had. Of course, this discourse is all subjective, but if Avatar didn’t have impact, then why is Lizzo on the beach doing Na’vi thirst traps?

In a TikTok video shared today (January 9), the right half of the frame shows a female Na’vi walking on the beach. On the left is Lizzo, doing a spot-on imitation of the character in a clip that was Avatar-ized with a video filter. She later shared another video of herself with the filter, enjoying some time in the water. “tell James Cameron I’m ready…,” she captioned the second video.

♬ Becoming one of “The People” Becoming one with Neytiri – James Horner

Hey, James Cameron: Lizzo is ready.

Speaking of Cameron, he addressed the “cultural impact” conversation in a recent interview, saying, “There’s skepticism in the marketplace around, ‘Oh, did it ever make any real cultural impact? Can anybody even remember the characters’ names?’ When you have extraordinary success, you come back within the next three years. That’s just how the industry works. You come back to the well, and you build that cultural impact over time. Marvel had maybe 26 movies to build out a universe, with the characters cross-pollinating. So it’s an irrelevant argument. We’ll see what happens after this film.”

50 Cent Confirmed An ‘8 Mile’ Series About Eminem’s Life And Legacy Is Underway And It’s ‘Gonna Be Big’

As his breakout television shows BMF starring and Power Book II: Ghost return for new seasons this month, rapper 50 Cent stopped by REAL 92.3 FM’s show Big Boy’s Neighborhood to discuss each show (which he serves as an executive producer) on and more. As he chatted with host Big Boy, 50 revealed that he would be adding yet another television series to his lengthy production resume.

As the pair talked about 50’s relationship with fellow rapper Eminem and their performance at Super Bowl LVI in 2022, 50 declared a television series version of Eminem’s biopic 8 Mile was underway.

“I wanna bring… I’m gonna bring 8 Mile to television,” 50 said. The mogul confirmed that his dear friend was aware of his plans before continuing, “We in motion. It’s gonna be big. I’m working. I ain’t got no duds.” This news served as a surprise to the host as just days ago actor Mekhi Phifer shot down the idea of a sequel as the film’s anniversary approached.

When asked about the potential for a remake of the film, Phifer replied, “Sometimes it’s just best to leave it alone. Once you make it a classic, no reason to fool around with it,” he said. Phifer ended with, “It could be interesting, but I wouldn’t be in it, and I’m sure Eminem wouldn’t be in it either.”

But 50 Cent creatively disagrees telling Big Boy, “I think it should be there for [Eminem’s] legacy because it’s important to me that they understand it.”

Of Course ‘The Simpsons’ Seemingly Predicted Bad Bunny Recently Throwing A Fan’s Phone

International star Bad Bunny’s music was inescapable last year. His breakout album Un Verano Sin Ti earned the Puerto Rico native Apple Music’s Artist Of The Yearear title and Spotify Wrapped’s most-streamed artist. If that wasn’t enough, many predict Bunny will make history at this year’s Grammy Awards as he is nominated for Album Of The Year. But with all of the success, controversy is sure to follow.

First, some of the Latin trap rapper’s fans were duped out of concert tickets for his show in Mexico City. Second, his fans’ admiration for him has become too much for him to handle. While visiting the Dominican Republic, the musician was displeased by locals violating his personal space with cell phones. In a viral clip, Bunny is seen tossing a fan’s phone into the nearby water while going for a stroll on the street. During the same visit, another clip surfaced of him destroying a fan’s phone inside a club.

Now, fans have realized that it looks like The Simpsons, as it often does, predicted this.

In 2021, The Simpsons and Bad Bunny collaborated for the music star’s “Te Deseo Lo Mejor” video, in which Bunny enters the Simpsons universe. In the clip, an animated Bunny breaks Homer’s cell phone. While his actions in the clip helped Homer get back on wife Marge’s good side, in real life, Dominicans aren’t at all happy with him after he released a statement saying, “The people who come up to me to say hello, to tell me something, or just to meet me, will always receive my attention and respect. Those who come to put a f*cking phone in my face I will consider it for what it is, a lack of respect, and I will treat it likewise.”

The Simpson’s creative team’s gift of prophecy may seem like a joke, but to some, it is more accurate than you think. The show foreshadowed Richard Branson’s space trip, Donald Trump’s presidency, and Las Vegas Monorail’s bankruptcy years ahead of time.
