Ebro Darden Calls Out Drake for Not Highlighting Black Issues and Dissing “This is America”: ‘Why You In Your Feelings?’

Ebro Darden Calls Out Drake for Not Highlighting Black Issues and Dissing "This is America"

Drake is currently on a run across the continent for the It’s All A Blur tour. During the opening nights in Chicago, fans noticed The Boy took a jab at Childish Gambino’s “This is America,” which was originally a Drake diss. Now, Ebro Darden has an opinion about the shot taken.

On Rap Life Review, Ebro questioned Drizzy’s history of not speaking up for anything happening in society, especially impacting Black people. “Drake has never shown up to have anything to say about anything going on in society with Black folks or anything other than himself,” Ebro said.

He added, “The song was supposed to be a joke diss, it didn’t actually happen. So why you in your feelings?”

In case you missed it, Drizzy used the stage set up during his single “Headlines” performance to create more headlines out of an old headline.

Running on a ticker on the stage, a headline read: “The overrated and over-awarded hit song ‘”‘This Is America’”‘ was originally a Drake diss record.”

A call back to “This is America” creator Childish Gambino revealing that he wanted to diss Drake.

Released in 2018, “This Is America” took home not one, not two, not three, but four Grammy awards — the biggest being Song of the Year at the 61st Grammys. The record also won Record of the Year, Best Music Video, and Best Rap/Sung Performance.

Gambino sat down with GQ for their cover story, revealing the origin behind “This Is America.” In fact, he had the idea for the song and was perfecting it for three years before it was released to the public.

Gambino explains, “I had the idea three years before. I told [director] Hiro [Murai] the idea, and he’s like, ‘I really want to do that.’… The idea for the song started as a joke. To be completely honest, ‘This is America’—that was all we had was that line. It started as a Drake diss, to be honest, as a funny way of doing it. But then I was like, this shit sounds kind of hard though. So I was like, let me play with it.”

Apparently, one of the main lyrics was originally supposed to take a jab at Drake’s stomping grounds in Canada. “[It] was a funny way of like doing [a Drake diss],” Gambino stated. “ But then I was like, ‘This shit sounds kind of hard, though.’ So I was like, ‘Let me play with it.’ So we just had that for a long time, I told Hiro the idea, and he was like, ‘Oh, let’s do it.’”

And below is Drake’s jab back:

Drake Never Addresses ‘Black Issues,’ According To Ebro Darden: ‘He Has Never Shown Up To Have Anything To Say’

Drake has a vault full of music in which he discusses his life, there’s one topic he tends to shy away from, or so one person argues. During Apple Music’s latest episode of Rap Life Review, host Ebro Darden aimed at Drake’s silence related to Black issues.

On Drake and 21 Savage’s It’s All A Blur Tour, the screen displayed a message dissing Childish Gambino’s 2018 song “This Is America,” which they dubbed overrated. At the time of its release, the song’s video was praised for creatively tackling topics such as political brutality, gun violence, and more. That enraged Darden, who singled out Drake for what he sees as an unflattering career-long pattern.

“Drake, who has never shown up, and y’all know I’m the biggest Drake fan on this show,” said Darden.”Drake has never shown up to have anything to say about anything going on in society with Black folks or anything other than himself.”

This isn’t the first time that Drake was called out for not using his platform to advocate for societal issues plaguing the Black community publicly. However, the entertainer has made several substantial momentary donations to civic rights organizations and causes, including the National Bail Out Fund and Black Lives Matter.

Young Thug Makes His Presence Felt In The ‘Oh U Went’ Video With Drake Despite His Ongoing Incarceration

Early this month, Young Thug and Drake reunited — on digital wax if not in real life — on Thug’s new album, Business Is Business for a pair of tracks, “Parade On Cleveland” and “Oh You Went,” continuing their longstanding chemistry. Today, they shared the video for the latter track, which makes up for the lack of Young Thug’s physical presence with a few reminders of his impact on music fans in his native Atlanta.

Of course, while Young Thug’s presence is still felt in having young fans clamor all over Drake to recite Thug’s lyrics, the Atlanta rapper remains incarcerated. He’s (still) awaiting trial on charges of racketeering and other crimes, accused by the State of being the ringleader of a criminal organization responsible for wreaking havoc throughout Atlanta.

Being locked up didn’t stop Thug from releasing new music, though — even if the music was actually kind of old. Business Is Business is largely made up of material Thug had previously recorded before being arrested last year. Some fans still couldn’t help but conjecture about whether or not he’d commented on his present standing with YSL artist Gunna, who was released after accepting a plea deal in which he admitted to being in a gang.

Business Is Business is out now via Young Stoner Life Records/300 Entertainment/Atlantic Records. Get it here.

Young Thug is a Warner Music artist. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

Drake and 21 Savage Revisit Their Beef Anna Wintour Using Tour Hologram

21 Savage Backs Drake's 'Her Loss' Lyrics: 'I'm Behind Him'

Drake and 21 Savage didn’t forget that Anna Wintour and Vogue sued them for their Her Loss promotion.

In case you need a reminder, during Drake and 21 Savage’s rollout for their 2022 album Her Loss, the two decided to print out fake Vogue magazines with themselves on the cover and throughout the entire book. They even decided to sell the magazine, with many people even believing that the two graced the cover of Vogue. While the two’s fans warmly received this marketing strategy, people at Vogue thought otherwise and decided to sue the duo.

Vogue had initially asked Drake and 21 to pay $4 million to use the fake cover. In a recent update, the duo and the highly coveted magazine company have settled the lawsuit.

According to TMZ, the lawyers for Drake and 21 met with Vogue’s parent company Condé Nast and were able to settle out of court for an undisclosed amount. As a part of the settlement, the parent company also received an injunction to prevent the commercial use of Vogue’s trademarks.

The parent company’s attorney said that the payment from Drake and 21 will “bolster our ongoing creative output, including Vogue editorial.”

Months later, Drake decided to get a little payback, creating a rather horrifying hologram of Anna Wintour that was displayed on tour.

Drake & 21 Savage’s Anna Wintour-Inspired Hologram On Their ‘It’s All A Blur Tour’ Could Land Them In The Mix Of Another Lawsuit

Drake and 21 Savage’s joint It’s All A Blur Tour has several questionable visual aid choices. Some of these are holograms. One of the most discussed images included a swimming giant sperm and a young Drake lookalike that Drake himself interacts with during the show. Attendees of the latest tour stop just spotted one creepy new addition to the collection: an Anna Wintour -inspired hologram.

Fans took to TikTok to share clips of the onscreen projection, jokingly calling out the entertainers for being petty about their feud with American Vogue‘s editor-in-chief. Although neither of the musicians has outrightly said that the hologram is pulled from Wintour’s likeness, the precise bob cut and bang combo, along with the conspicuous black designer sunglasses, leave little room for guessing.

The pair’s supposed legal settlement with Vogue‘s publisher Condé Nast furthers attendees’ speculation. The company initially sued Drake and 21 Savage for trademark infringement after the duo’s marketing teams released a fake Vogue cover to promote their album, Her Loss, in late 2022. Although Vogue wasn’t the only media company’s branding to be included in the project’s rollout, it appears Condé Nast was the only one to take legal action.

Meanwhile, NPR Music was flattered by the pair using their Tiny Desk Concert series set-up for a phony promotional video. The social media team for the series even invited Drake and 21 Savage actually to film an episode.

Drake & J. Cole’s ‘It’s All A Blur Tour’ Surprise Performance Might’ve Just Kicked Off The Duo’s Next Collaboration

The It’s All A Blur Tour with Drake and 21 Savage has been filled with a few uncomfortable onstage moments, including a huge floating sperm appearing in the concert’s displayed visuals to Drake being pelted with objects while performing. However, it’s also offered a wealth of information about the “Search & Rescue” rapper’s next moves.

After he brought out fellow rapper J. Cole for a surprise performance in Montreal, Drake had one special request for the Dreamville boss. While praising him for his dedication to the hip-hop culture, Drake had one special request for his friend: “Hopefully, there’s an album? Hopefully, there’s an album I can actually get on.”

Cole tried not to let anything details slip, so Drake tried again, this time flat-out asking, “Can I get on the album? I’m going to ask in front of Montreal. Can we get on your album?”

Cole thunderously replied, “Say less, goddammit!”

Before Cole left the stage, Drake showered him with one more round of compliments. “Montreal, I want you to understand something. It takes someone that not really only loves the art of this shit but really loves all of you to get on a plane to come here for two nights and represent for Montreal,” proclaimed the entertainer.

J. Cole hasn’t shared any details about his next album’s release. However, if the collaboration with Drake does come to fruition, it will make the duo’s first collaborative track since the 2021 song “Pipe Down” off of Drake’s album Certified Lover Boy.

Drake Brought Out J Cole For A Suprise Performance At The Montreal Stop Of The ‘It’s All A Blur Tour’

Last night (July 14), Drake brought the It’s All A Blur Tour> to the Bell Centre in Montreal. Though 21 Savage was notably absent, Drake still had plenty of surprises for fans.

One of them being an appearance by collaborator and longtime friend, rapper J Cole. Cole walked through the crowd wearing a yellow shirt that read “The game has changed, you have been warned.”

Cole later arrived to the stage, where he performed his 2014 hit “No Role Modelz” alongside Drake.

Back in April, the two performed a special set at Cole’s Dreamville Festival 2023 in Raleigh, North Carolina.

At one of Cole’s shows in Miami back in 2021, Drake made a surprise appearance, where he performed three songs from his Certified Lover Boy album, where he told Cole “You are genuinely, without a doubt, one of the greatest rappers to ever touch a mic.”

Though the two rappers’ friendship goes back over a decade, the two have only released a handful of collabs — including 2010’s “In The Morning” and 2013’s “Jodeci Freestyle.” They have, however, loaned each other beats for their projects, and have brought each other out on stage over the years.

You can see some clips from the Montreal concert above.
