Suge Knight Laments Industry Hypocrisy For Dr. Dre & Chris Brown

Suge Knight says there’s a double standard in the industry when it comes to Dr. Dre. Discussing the Grammys naming their Global Impact Award after the legendary producer, Knight compared the industry’s treatment of him to Chris Brown. He brought up the topic on his podcast, Collect Call.

“You can have a man that’s part of that secret society and they gonna give him an award — the Impact Award,” he said. “That motherf*cker beat up more b*tches than anybody. This man gets an award for beating up women. Chris Brown is stripped of his crown and not saying it was right that him and Rihanna got into it and they had a fight or he beat her up. I’m not saying that, but what I’m saying is this: he had a fight with one woman or he beat up one woman — and they still casting stones at him.”

JAY-Z Drinks Out Of His Grammy Award During Ceremony

JAY-Z is catching attention on social media for taking a sip of D’Ussé out of his Dr. Dre Global Impact Award at the 2024 Grammys on Sunday night. During his acceptance speech, he made a joke about his daughter using Grammy Awards as sippy cups when she was younger. Afterward, the cameras caught him using the award to drink from.

“Thank you very much. I used to say it was a sippy cup for Blue, but Blue’s grown up now she doesn’t take sippy cups,” he said on stage. “And she has her own Grammys.” Blue Ivy joined him for the acceptance speech.

JAY-Z also criticized the Recording Academy with his speech by noting that Beyonce has never won Album of the Year despite being the winningest artist in Grammy history. “I don’t want to embarrass this young lady, but she has more Grammys than everyone and never won Album of the Year,” he said. “So even by your own metrics, that doesn’t work. Think about that. The most Grammys; never won Album of the Year. That doesn’t work. Obviously, it’s subjective because it’s music. It’s opinion-based. Some of you are going to go home tonight and feel like you’ve been robbed. Some of you may get robbed– some of you don’t belong in the category. When I get nervous, I tell the truth. But outside of that, we gotta keep showing up. Forget the Grammys for a second, just in life. Just in life, you gotta keep showing up. You gotta just keep showing up until they give you those accolades you feel you deserve until they call you chairman, until they call you a genius, until they call you the greatest of all time. You feel me? Thank you.”

Dee Barnes On Dr. Dre’s Grammys Honor: “They Named This Award After An Abuser”

Days after the Recording Industry honored West Coast Hip Hop pioneer Dr. Dre. former host of Fox’s Pump It Up Dee Barnes condemns the Grammys’ choice to honor Dr.Dre.

Barnes slammed the decision to honor the N.W.A. co-founder with the inaugural “Dr. Dre Global Impact Award” at the Black Music Collective honors ceremony. Barnes spoke to Rolling Stone about the decision saying, “Everybody wants to separate the art from the artist, and sometimes that’s just not possible…They named this award after an abuser.”

Shecontinued, “It wasn’t just a one or two-time thing; these are choices. The first time, it’s maybe a mistake. The second time, okay. The third time, it’s a choice. I’m not saying he is the same person now, though. I don’t know. I’m not around him anymore. I haven’t talked to him.” She even said, “They might as well call [the honor] the ‘Ike Turner Award.’”

Barnes’ gripe comes from an alleged assault by Dr. Dre back on January 27, 1991 when Dre encountered Barnes at a record release party in Hollywood. According to Barnes, he picked her up by her hair and “began slamming her head and the right side of her body repeatedly against a brick wall near the stairway” as his bodyguard held off the crowd with a gun. After Dre tried to throw her down the stairs and failed, he began kicking her in the ribs and hands. She escaped and ran into the women’s restroom.

Dre pleaded no contest to the assault. He was fined $2,500, placed on two years’ probation, and ordered to perform 240 hours of community service and produce an anti-violence public service announcement. The lawsuit was settled out of court.
