Donald Glover shared a new trailer for an upcoming film titled, Bando Stone and The New World, on Sunday night. In addition to directing and starring in the project, Glover will also handle the soundtrack under his Childish Gambino pseudonym. He posted the trailer on X (formerly Twitter) and confirmed that the first single from the soundtrack, “Lithonia,” drops on Tuesday. It can be heard in the trailer for the film.
In the trailer, Glover plays the titular character, Bando Stone, as he attempts to make a delivery in a seemingly abandoned town. Eventually, he runs into two of the only people alive who warn him of the dangers of being outside at night. In response to Glover’s X post, fans are stoked for the project. “Donald…you genius!! This is the coolest thing I’ve ever seen omg,” one user responded. Another wrote: “we’re actually getting peak music omg.”
Prior to the announcement, both the song “Lithonia” and the IMAX trailer for the film leaked online. In response, Glover went on a rant about the situation on social media. “That’s another reason why y’all don’t get good sh*t. Like, it’s just for what? It’s like we don’t treat… It’s not valuable enough like it’s just a single… And I know who did it, Audiomack. F*ckin’, no soup for you, you’re not getting the album now. That’s what time I’m on,” he said.
Donald Glover Shares Trailer For “Bando Stone & The New World”
Glover has yet to confirm a release date for Bando Stone and The New World. Check out the official trailer for the movie above. Be on the lookout for further updates on Donald Glover and his new film on HotNewHipHop.
Donald Glover, a.k.a. Childish Gambino, unveiled the first trailer for his highly anticipated new movie, Bando Stone & The New World Order. Debuting ahead of A Quiet Place: Day One screening on June 27th, Glover announced its premiere hours before on Instagram. Still, there’s very little known about the upcoming project, which will include an accompanying soundtrack under his moniker Childish Gambino. Let’s explore what we know about Bando Stone & The New World.
The two-minute trailer premiered exclusively in IMAX theaters on Thursday night after Donald Glover, in his Instagram post earlier that day, teased the trailer drop. The brief clip shows Glover’s character, Bando Stone, joining forces with other survivors in a perilous journey through a world filled with giant, blood-thirsty creatures and electromagnetic traps. The trailer, not yet officially released online, has snippets captured by fans circulating on social media, adding to the anticipation.
However, the trailer’s debut didn’t mean that Donald Glover and his team chose to share it online. So far, only the few fans who watched the movie in theaters caught a glimpse of the preview. Nonetheless, fan-captured footage surfaced online this morning, per HipHopDX, which you could view above.
Cast & Production
Bando Stone & The New World is produced by RCA Records and Gilga, Glover’s creative hub. The film stars Jessica Allain, known for her roles in horror thrillers like Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Fear. The movie, exclusive to IMAX theaters, marks a significant collaboration between Glover and his production partners. The storyline focuses on Bando Stone, a musician trying to survive in a world overrun by extraterrestrial threats, whose sole skill is singing. The blend of horror, comedy, and science fiction signals that this movie will certainly be worth a watch.
Soundtrack & Album Release
Accompanying the film is a soundtrack album from Childish Gambino, expected to be his final full-length release under this moniker. While the release date of the movie remains unannounced, Glover has confirmed that the album will drop this summer. The lead single, “Lithonia,” is set to release on July 2. Glover expressed frustration over the single leaking early. He blamed the streaming service Audiomack and vowing to withhold the album from them. Despite this hiccup, the anticipation for the single and the album remains high among fans.
Bando Stone & The New World will be Glover’s second album release in 2024, following Atavista, an updated version of his 2020 LP 3.15.20. Glover’s return to music is complemented by a massive world tour kicking off in August 2024. The tour will cover North America, Europe, and Oceania, and he will be joined by genre-bending artists Willow Smith and Amaarae. This tour marks a significant event in Glover’s music career, promising a blend of new and nostalgic performances.
The Rollout & Fan Engagement
Glover has taken a unique approach to the rollout of Bando Stone & The New World, using cryptic messages and Easter eggs through his Gilga Radio show and social media. This campaign has created a sense of mystery and excitement among fans. Glover’s Instagram Live sessions have provided sporadic insights, including his feelings about the state of the music industry and the joy he finds in simple activities like feeding cows on his California farm. His engagement with fans through these unconventional methods has built a narrative that extends beyond the music and film, making this project a multifaceted experience.
Last night (June 27), Donald Glover (AKA Childish Gambino) took to Instagram to surprise his fans: He shared a photo of two tickets to an IMAX screening of A Quiet Place: Day One and wrote, “Bando Stone trailer is coming tonight @imax.” Sure enough, a trailer for Glover’s Bando Stone And The New World movie aired in IMAX theaters last night.
It hasn’t been officially shared online yet, but fan-shot recordings have made the rounds online. The two-minute video starts with Bando Stone (Glover’s character) wandering around an empty post office before heading to an also-empty convenience store. There, he encounters a character played by Jessica Allain, who holds a gun in his face. Stone reveals he’s a famous singer, and later, he joins Allain’s character and a young girl (perhaps Allain’s daughter or sister). From there, the three try to survive in a post-apocalyptic world full of dangerous giant creatures.
In April, Glover shed some light on his upcoming plans. One of them is a soundtrack album for the Bando Stone movie, which he dubbed the “final” Childish Gambino album. He also announced Atavista, an album that has since been released.
Check out the Bando Stone And The New World trailer above.
In April, Donald Glover confirmed he planned to release “the final Childish Gambino album” after Atavista, which arrived on May 13. The final album is believed to be called Bando Stone And The New World, and it’s supposed to release sometime this summer.
“‘Lithonia’ coming out July 2,” he said of an upcoming single during an Instagram Live session on Wednesday, June 26, as per Billboard. “That got leaked — kinda pissed me off to be honest. That’s another reason why y’all don’t get good sh*t. For what? It’s not valuable enough. It’s just a single. And I know who did it. Audiomack, f*cking no soup for you. You’re not getting the album now. That’s what time I’m on.”
An unnamed Audiomack representative provided a statement to Billboard, which reads, “This morning, we learned that an Audiomack user correctly guessed the URL for Childish Gambino’s already-announced new single, revealing a July 2 release date. The music itself was never playable. We already have a fix in place, which we are rolling out now.”
A YouTube user named Childish Brandino captured the entire five-minute Live. Despite his negative emotions toward Audiomack, Glover was mostly in a good mood, saying, “The problem is we’re not having enough fun. OK, so, this rollout that’s coming, it’s like, mostly about fun. I’m trying to have fun because I feel like there’s just people not having enough fun.”
Are Donald Glover & Maya Erskine Coming Back For Mr. & Mrs. Smith Season 2 Or Not?
On May 14, Variety reported that Mr. & Mrs. Smith had been renewed for a second season at Amazon Prime Video, but “sources say that Season 1 stars Donald Glover and Maya Erskine are not expected to return to star in Season 2. Glover is still credited as a co-creator and executive producer on the series alongside Francesca Sloane, who will return as showrunner.”
Pretty straightforward. But then, Glover and Erskine appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! this week, and we’re back to not knowing what’s going on with this show. Kimmel asked Glover and Erskine about the Variety report, and Erskine shrugged. “You know, I don’t know,” Glover said. “It’s like November 28, and the kids know there’s a Christmas present, and they’re like, ‘Mom, where’s the Christmas present?’” Kimmel interrupted Glover’s attempt to skirt the question, saying, “No, it’s not like that. It’s like it’s November 28, and the kids don’t know if Santa is even coming.”
Glover laughed and offered that, within the same metaphor, “you might ruin Christmas” if you tell the kids anything too early. Erskine added, “It’ll be more fun if you see the second season — you wanna wait!” Then, Glover concluded (sort of), “Who says we’re not in it? Maybe we are, maybe we aren’t.”
“I was just talking to Donald last night about this, and we were laughing because one of the pieces of press said, ‘According to our sources,’ and we’re like, ‘Who are these sources?’ said the Mr. & Mrs. Smith showrunner, who also served as a supervising producer on Atlanta. “We wrote a cliffhanger, we thought about it long and hard. It was one of the first things that we wrote. Why in the world — we haven’t said anything — but why in the world would we ruin a cliffhanger based on a headline?”
Childish Gambino released his long-awaited project Atavista on May 13. The album delivers on his years-old promise that the full project would eventually see the light of day. Fans quickly took note of the fact that the album is a reissue of his 2020 release 3.15.20. Gambino released the original album, named for its release date, in an unfinished state. Despite its highlights, 3.15.20 contained choppy vocal mixing, timestamps in place of song titles, and no album cover whatsoever. Childish Gambino has clarified in recent appearances that he always intended to clean the project up and release Atavista as a finished work, explaining that he initially dropped the unmixed and unmastered edition as a precaution, fearing the world would collapse due to the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic.
Now that Childish Gambino has officially delivered Atavista in all its glory, he has meticulously fine-tuned each track. The choppy 3.15.20 mixes have been subsequently nixed from streaming libraries. However, Childish Gambino has made numerous changes since releasing 3.15.20 over four years ago, making Atavista a new and interesting listen for fans of all stripes. Let’s dive into the biggest differences between the two projects, and highlight these changes for fans who may not be overly familiar with the original release.
The biggest change from 3.15.20 to Atavista by far is the absence of 3 tracks from the original tracklist. Childish Gambino removed the 2018 single “Feels Like Summer,” a melodic harmony-heavy intro assumed to be titled “We Are,” and a thumping, pulsating track titled “Warlords.” While “Warlords” and “We Are” never fully materialized as concepts, “Feels Like Summer” acted as a leading single, making its removal highly peculiar. Despite this, “Feels Like Summer” remains listed on streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music under the banner of the Summer Pack bundle, along with its companion track “Summertime Magic.”
Other tracks from the original release are still present in their cleaned-up state, though many of them have been abridged. One defining characteristic of 3.15.20 was the frequent and in-depth transitions between tracks. Childish Gambino has shortened or entirely eliminated many of these transitions on Ativista. The most significant instance of this change is the track “Why Go To The Party,” originally titled “39.28.” The new album condenses the song from a full 3-minute track into a 41-second interlude. For now, the only way to stream the tracks in their original form is to check out the original YouTube upload “Childish Gambino – 3.15.20.”
Some New Tracks Were Added
Before you go thinking that Childish Gambino was overly downsizing when he finalized Atavista, be sure to check out the brand new songs which have never been available to stream before. The title track, which serves as the new intro, originally premiered live on stage back in 2018, generating a great deal of fanfare. Similarly, despite teasing it numerous times in the past several years, Bino exclusively includes the song “Human Sacrifice” on Atavista. “Human Sacrifice” has been one of the most sought-after songs in Childish Gambino’s entire illustrious career. Numerous leaks of the track have surfaced online. Childish Gambino performed the soon-to-be hit live during his 2018 tour, and a snippet featured in a 2019 Google Pixel 3 ad. This hype inspired droves of fans to demand an official release.
While artists such as Ariana Grande and 21 Savage appeared on the original 3.15.20, Childish Gambino has recruited a pair of new vocal guests to bless the official Atavista release. Summer Walker provides some heavenly harmonies on the track “Sweet Thang.” Likewise, Young Nudy drops by for a highly polarizing closing verse on “Little Foot Big Foot.” The latter track was released with a new music video ahead of the Atavista drop, offering fans a first look at the new and improved single. The video, directed by frequent Childish Gambino collaborator Hiro Murai, serves as the first visual of Atavista. Gambino claims there will be visuals for each track on the project, rolling out alongside a special-edition vinyl.
Childish Gambino’s long-awaited plan of dropping Atavista as he always intended has already paid off. Still, it’s certainly a shame that the original 3.15.20 version was removed from streaming platforms. Regardless, the new project is the first music we’ve received from Bino in over 4 years, so that’s a win. Fans around the world have flocked to analyze the music, the fascinating soundscapes, and marvel at the newly-released visuals.
Childish Gambino fans, rejoice! The multi-talented Donald Glover, also known by his stage name Childish Gambino, is hitting the road once again. Following the release of Childish Gambino’s latest project, Atavista (3.15.20 reimagined versions), Glover has announced plans for his highly anticipated global tour, *The New World Tour*. With a lineup featuring openers Willow and Amaarae, this tour promises to be an electrifying experience for fans across the globe.
Glover took to Instagram to share the exciting news with his fans. The tour, which marks his first major trek since 2018, is set to kick off in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on August 11th. Alongside the announcement, he revealed that the “Artist Presale” for the Childish Gambino tour would commence on May 15th, with general ticket sales starting on May 17th via Ticketmaster. Fans were encouraged to sign up on thenewworldtour.com for access to exclusive presale codes.
Tour Highlights & Locations
The upcoming Childish Gambino tour will span across North America, Australia, and select European cities, treating fans to unforgettable performances in iconic venues. After starting in Oklahoma City, the tour will make its way through major U.S. markets including Detroit, Philadelphia, Boston, Brooklyn, Atlanta, Houston, and more before concluding with a show in Chicago on October 3rd. Gambino will then embark on a journey across Europe, with stops in Italy, Belgium, Netherlands, Norway, France, Germany, the U.K., and beyond.
Gambino’s latest project, Atavista, serves as an 11-track collection that reimagines his previously released 3.15.20 project. Featuring collaborations with artists such as Ariana Grande, 21 Savage, Summer Walker, and Young Nudy, Atavista offers a fresh perspective on Gambino’s musical prowess. The release was accompanied by a visually captivating black-and-white video for “Little Foot Big Foot,” directed by Hiro Murai and featuring Quinta Brunson from Abbott Elementary.
What’s Next?
But the excitement doesn’t stop there. Gambino has even more in store for his fans this year, with plans to drop a second album this summer. This upcoming album will serve as the soundtrack to his forthcoming movie, Bando Stone & The New World. Gambino expressed his gratitude to his dedicated fanbase during a recent Gilga Radio stream, emphasizing that this album is dedicated to them.
