The SOURCE’s Top New Artists Of 2022

S3 1

2022 was a breakout year for many hip-hop artists, especially female rap artists. With TikTok becoming increasingly popular within hip-hop, many artists simultaneously dominated the charts while also having the most popular and widely used song on social media.

S3

Glorilla

When someone talks about 2022, you can go without talking about Glorilla. The 23-year-old Memphis native took over the country with her song “F.N.F. (Let’s Go).” The song went viral and started the #FNFChallenge on TikTok. Glorilla would end up signing to Yo Gotti’s Collective Music Group in July, and Latto and JT would soon jump on the remix in September, with Saweetie shortly following. Glorilla would later be nominated for Favorite Hip Hop Artist, Best Hip Hop Song, and Best New Hip Hop Artist at the American Music Awards and the BET Hip-Hop Awards, respectively, winning the latter. “F.N.F” is also nominated for Best Rap Performance at the 2023 Grammy Awards.

Coi Leray

Coming off of a strong 2021, Coi would deliver again in 2022. She dropped her debut studio album, Trendsetter, which featured artists such as Yung Bleu, Fivio Foreign, Young M.A., G Herbo, H.E.R., Nav, Polo G, Lil Tecca, A Boogie, Nicki Minaj, and others. She also released the song “Blick Blick” featuring Nicki Minaj, which peaked at number 37 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Yeat

Yeat might have started to reach success on social media in 2021, but 2022 was indeed his breakout year. The Portland native released his debut album Up 2 Më in September last year but finally reached the Billboard Hot 200 in January of 2022. His song “How Could You Tell” would eventually be used in an episode of the hit HBO show Euphoria. In February, he would go on to release his second album, 2 Alivë, with features from Young Thug and Gunna, and would reach #6 on the Billboard Hot 200 chart. However, his success grew when he was commissioned to create a song for a Lyrical Lemonade-produced trailer for Minions: Rise Of Gru. His song “Rich Minion” was released in June and soon inspired the Gentleminions TikTok trend and peaked at 99 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Ice Spice

While Meriam Webster voted “gaslighting” as 2022’s word of the year, “munch” could be considered #2, thanks to Ice Spice. The New York-bred rapper had only been rapping for a year before she took over social media and had men on the internet admitting that they were indeed a “munch.” After she released the video for “Munch (Feelin’ U), she quickly rose in popularity and became a trending figure on social media, even catching the attention of Drake, who posted a cosign. Just a couple of months after the release of “Munch,” she followed it up with “Bikini Bottom,” which features strings reminiscent of a song used in SpongeBob Squarepants.

Doechii

Before 2022, Doechii had steadily been making a name for herself in the industry. This past year seems to culminate these last couple of years. In 2020 she released her debut EP, Oh The Places You’ll Go, which featured the popular TikTok song “Yucky Blucky Fruitcake.” The following year she was featured on Isaiah Rashad’s critically acclaimed album The House Is Burning and was SZA’s opening act during her 6-date tour. 2022, however, was Doechii’s breakout year, getting signed by Capitol Records and Top Dawg Entertainment, making her the latter label’s first female rapper. In August, she released her sophomore EP and first major label debut, She/Her/Black Bitch. Her performance of her song “Persuasive” earned her a nomination for Push Performance of the Year at the 2022 MTV Music Video Awards.

Ravyn Lenae Brings Doechii Onboard For A Rejuvenating Remix Of ‘Xtasy’

The hip-house resurrection continues with the remix to Ravyn Lenae’s new Kaytrana-produced single, “Xtasy.” Fittingly, the new version of the song features a verse from Doechii, rap’s latest adherent to the dance-music-infused style that first emerged 30 years ago and has made a roaring resurgence this year. Picking up where she left off on her own upbeat singles like “Persuasive” and her debut EP, She/Her/Black B*tch, Doechii delivers a seductive verse playing off the sexy themes presented by Lenae on the original “Xtasy.”

Lenae has been around for a bit, but has seen increased attention in 2022 thanks to a slew of steamy singles such as the Steve Lacy collaborations “Skin Tight” and “Light Me Up,” “Xtasy,” and “M.I.A.,” the lead single from her upcoming debut album Hypnos. In a statement about the long-awaited debut, Lenae said:

“When you listen to the music, I hope you have a better understanding of me and even catch a better understanding of yourself. As artists, we make music as a pathway to help other people understand certain aspects of their lives. I’ve gone through the tunnels and seen the light on the other side. I’m finding my way. I’m clearer on who I am and my power through music and lyricism. I’m pouring more into me, friendships, family, and music. Through all of that, I’m fulfilled.”

Hypnos is out 5/20 via Atlantic. Pre-save it here.

Ravyn Lenae is a Warner Music artist. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

The eagerly awaited music video for “Persuasive” by Doechii and SZA is now out. The song and seductive video, which were both directed by Sara Lacombe, are next-level addictive thanks to the club-ready cooperation of Top Dawg Entertainment’s two female powerhouses. The song is featured on Doechii’s EPshe / her / black bitch.

“I created ‘Persuasive’ to uplift people and bring communities together, so having SZA jump on the song was a perfect fit because I’ve always connected with others over her music,” says Doechii. “Knowing that SZA is with TDE was what originally got me most excited about being on this label, so now that we have a song together it’s a full-circle moment. She really ATE! This collaboration is everything I always imagined it to be.”

Doechii And SZA Sport Multiple Unforgettable Looks In The ‘Persuasive’ Video

When Doechii joined the TDE Records roster, she was the first female artist on the label besides SZA. Doechii has been on the up ever since, dropping her debut EP she/her/black b*tch last month, which features appearances from Rico Nasty and Just Ray, along with SZA on the record’s crowning moment, “Persuasive.”

The SZA-featured version of “Persuasive” is one of those tracks that should really be getting more talk as a potential song of the summer and now the pair have dropped a video that’s sure to get people talking about the collab between the ladies of TDE. Both Doechii and SZA flash multiple head-turning looks in the clip. It’s a masterful display of hair styling, Doechii gets wrapped in glitter at one point, and SZA even twerks and pole dances underwater.

“I created “Persuasive” to uplift people and bring communities together, so having SZA jump on the song was a perfect fit because I’ve always connected with others over her music,” Doechii said in a statement. “Knowing that SZA is with TDE was what originally got me most excited about being on this label, so now that we have a song together it’s a full-circle moment. She really ATE! This collaboration is everything I always imagined it to be.”

TDE Artist Doechii Releases “she / her / black b*tch” EP

Iam Doechii

Doechii drops her first EP for Top Dawg Entertainment / Capitol Records she / her / black b*tch

The Tampa native comes out swinging as she flexes her distinct voice and versatile talents that range from quick-fire bars to seductive singing that cement her as Rap’s newest ‘it girl.’

Doechii lends her signature half-rap, half-singing flow over production from Kal Banx, Hit-Boy, Bankroll Got It and Devin Malik. Her EP is Executive Produced by Anthony ‘Top Dawg’ Tiffith and Anthony “Moosa” Tiffith Jr.

The self-proclaimed ‘swamp princess’ noted that her EP title was a way for her to reclaim the power of being put down in the past. “Many times I’ve been referred to as a “b*tch” as a way to gaslight me out of certain spaces, something I think many people can relate to in one way or another,” says the 23-year-old.

“Lots of people will call you various names for doing something differently. So I decided to take ownership of the ‘Black b*tch’ and title my EP she/ her/ black b*tch and reclaim that motherf***ing power,” Doechii added. “So if you’ve ever been put down for being yourself, just remember you’re powerful and unapologetic- these songs are for you.”

The breakout star had an impressive 2021 gaining momentum with a new audience from her viral TikTok song “Yucky Blucky Fruitcake” and a dope feature on “Wat U Sed” from Isaiah Rashad’s The House Is Burning LP.

The 5-track project follows up Doechii’s remix featuring fellow labelmate and GRAMMY winner SZA on “Persuasive,” which also made Obama’s Summer playlist.
