Brandy Fans Rejoice Over Her Return To An Iconic Character In Disney Plus’ New ‘Descendants’ Movie

Never mind all the bluster about Halle Bailey‘s starring role as The Little Mermaid. The real first Black Disney princess was Brandy. Back in 1997, the R&B icon starred in a made-for-TV production of Cinderella as the titular orphan alongside Whitney Houston as her fairy godmother. For years, Rodgers And Hammerstein’s Cinderella was consigned to the VHS collections of ’90s kids until making its debut on Disney+ in 2021 (Bernadette Peters played the wicked stepmother, a true triumph of casting).

But it turned out that Disney wasn’t content just to bring back the original movie. Late last year, it was announced that Brandy’s Cinderella — along with her Prince Charming, Pablo Montalban — was returning in the latest installment of the Descendants film series, which revolves around the children of Disney heroes and villains (Rita Ora is also cast to play the Queen of Hearts). Today, fans got their first look at the reunited couple in their reprised and revamped roles and caught all the feels, gushing on Twitter about the surge of nostalgia the sight brought on.

Of course, plenty of attention was lavished on a long-running gag about the genetics of the original TV movie continuing in the new one. Montalban, who plays the prince (Christopher Rupert Vwindemier Vlandamier Carl Alexander Francois Reginald Lancelot Herman Gregory James), is Filipino, while his parents, the king, and queen, were portrayed by Victor Garber and Whoopi Goldberg. Suffice it to say, it’s been a source of endless, head-scratching delight for fans of the movie for the past 26 years.

Well, the tradition apparently continues; Cinderella’s son, Chad, is portrayed by Jedidiah Goodacre, who had previously appeared in the prior movies in the series. He’s obviously, well… not Black or Filipino. This is an amusing byproduct of his casting back in 2015 when no one had any idea what the series’ king and queen would look like. Now, it’s an accidental but hilarious nod to the colorblind castings of yesteryear and fans couldn’t help but point that out.

Ari Lennox Wants Disney Crown, Asks To Audition For “The Princess & The Frog”

Could Ari Lennox move from Dreamville’s First Lady to a Disney princess? She’s hoping so, and Lennox is publicly auditioning, kind of, for a crown. The R&B maven is both beloved as a songbird and a pop culture personality, and recently, she used social media to gain the attention of Disney’s head honchos. Ari shared a video to Instagram of her in the studio delivering her rendition of Anika Noni Rose’s “Almost There” from The Princess and the Frog. The film marked Disney’s first Black princess in history, and there have also been conversations about a potential live-action remake.

“Hi @Disney I’m Ari Lennox,” the singer also wrote in the caption of her clip. “And I would love an opportunity to audition for Princess and The Frog in person. ❤ Here’s #AlmostThere By Anika Noni Rose.” It wasn’t only the Shea Butter Baby‘s fans who jumped in her comment section with praise and applause. Jessie Reyez, Taraji P. Henson, JoJo, Anthony Hamilton, Mack Wilds, and more also encouraged Disney to hire Ari ASAP. A live adaptation of The Princess and the Frog isn’t so far-fetched, as there have been rumors that it is developing.

Disney Loves A Good Live-Action Remake

Disney has tackled its longstanding feature catalog by revisiting its blockbusters for a new generation. The Lion King, Cinderella, Mulan, Beauty and the Beast, and several of their other favorites have been revamped. Additionally, we’ll finally receive The Little Mermaid, starring hitmaking singer Halle Bailey in just a few months. This film has been years in the making, and Bailey is excited the world will see what she’s dedicated her life to.

The arrival of The Little Mermaid has been plagued with controversy from Disney purists. They weren’t happy to see a Black woman as the lead character of Ariel. he internet became a hateful place of bigoted rhetoric when the trailers were released. It’s negativity that Halle has taken in stride, as she told Edition by Modern Luxury in this week’s feature. “Seeing the world’s reaction to it was definitely a shock,” she told the publication. She also added, “But seeing all the babies’ reactions, all the brown and Black young girls, really tore me up emotionally.”

We’re unsure where Disney stands with their rumored remake of The Princess and the Frog. However, it’s clear that Ari Lennox fans want her to star. Do you think that’s a good choice? The Mandalorian Season 3 Episode 2: Review And Recap

The Mandalorian Season 3 Episode 2 released on Wednesday on Disney+ and saw Din Djarin, Grogu and company sprinting through the plotlines laid out in the first episode. While Episode 1 was all about bringing the audiences back up to speed, Season 3 Episode 2 was about plunging them (literally) into the deep lore of Mandalore.

Mandalorians are by far the most interesting group of people in Star Wars. They have such a deep, rich and fascinating lore. While Star Wars, and all the species in it, has a deep lore itself, this particular part of the franchise is unique.

For starters, that’s because the only Mandalorian ever seen in the films was Boba Fett. He, for as interesting as he was and is in his spin-off, is nothing like Din Djarin.

Djarin clings to the small religious sect of Mandalore that only a few do, even when he meets others that laugh in the face of it. Bo-Katan, Koska Reeves and others remove their helmets with no repercussions, but Djarin insists on finding the obsolete Living Waters to redeem himself for doing that.

That’s the premise laid out in Episode 1, and it’s almost completely resolved (or at least abandoned) in The Mandalorian Season 3 Episode 2.

The Mandalorian Season 3 Episode 2: What happened this time?

Din Djarin visited Peli Motto once again, who’s become almost as much of a recurring character as anyone. He wants to find an IG memory processor to fix his friend and the only droid he trusts, IG-11.

When he’s told that’s basically impossible, he begrudgingly takes an astromech she has to scout the planet. That effectively ends the plotline laid out in the first episode and plunges viewers into the future.

When he does discover that the air isn’t polluted, he goes down into the ruined city of Sundari on Mandalore, which was destroyed in the purge. Upon his arrival below, he begins looking for the mines of Mandalore so he can redeem himself.

He is attacked by a mechanized organism that is able to capture him and appears to be preparing to eat him. Grogu, then, must leap (he literally Force leaps into his chair) into action. He has to go find Bo-Katan, just about the only person who can help Din.

Din Djarin needs help in Mandalorian Season 3

Bo-Katan agrees to help Din, using his fallen Darksaber to slay the organism. It’s worth pointing out that she uses the weapon much more effectively than Djarin does.

She knows the way to the Living Waters and guides the injured Mandalorian there with Grogu. When he begins to recite the Creed he clings to, he’s sucked down into the water. Bo-Katan jumps in after him and finds him knocked out at the bottom of the water.

As she drags him up, she catches a glimpse of a monstrous beast that opens its eye and looks at her. She scrambles to the surface and drags her fallen counterpart to land, clearly shaken to her core by what she’s seen.

That’s where the episode ends, one of the more cliff-hanger-esque endings Jon Favreau and company have cooked up for the show.

Mandalorian Episode 3 Season 2: How did they do?

The Mandalorian Season 3 Episode 2 suffers from poor lighting. The entire episode, with few exceptions, takes place in the ruins of Mandalore. There’s no light beneath the surface, which makes things difficult to see.

However, it’s not dark enough that it’s impossible to see, though there are curious instances when characters turn off their lights and make it even worse.

It’s dim and mysterious, which could very well be the vibe the crew was going for. It’s a bit of a horror episode, with a few dark themes explored and a couple of jump scares.

Aside from that, there’s really nothing wrong with it from a technical aspect. The plot does quickly abandon the premise of the season, since Din Djarin has technically bathed in the waters and thus redeemed himself now (does anyone really believe he won’t remove his helmet again to save or help Grogu?).

Nevertheless, The Mines of Mandalore is another solid entry into the franchise. It gives viewers a look at how far Grogu has come. In the earlier seasons, he never would have been able to get back into his chair. This time, he flips into it with ease, navigates all the way back to Bo-Katan and gets her to help.

Season 3 is diving into Mandalorian lore

It also continues to explore the depths of the lore. Season 1 pulled in viewers with what felt like a Star Wars-adjacent story. Season 2 connected it to the greater universe. The third season seems to be pulling viewers into the lore like the beast pulled the Mandalorian down under the water.

Fortunately, for those unfamiliar with the depths of Star Wars (which is a lot of people, even dedicated Star Wars nerds), Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau are holding the audience’s hand.

They use the relationship between Mando and Grogu to explain things. Din Djarin gives his “son” the rundown on what’s going on. Bo-Katan explains it to both Djarin and Grogu, who are relatively clueless. So is the audience, so it’s a useful if boring exposition tactic.

This episode isn’t groundbreaking. It’s not even the best of this season. Nevertheless, The Mandalorian continues to prove why it’s must-watch television. What on earth (or Mandalore) will Djarin, Katan and Grogu do next?

Zach Galifianakis Cast In Disney’s Live-Action “Lilo & Stitch”

That’s right, Disney is doing a live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch and the cast is coming into fruition. Zach Galifianakis has officially joined the cast of the movie that has Disney fans buzzing. Disney has not disclosed the details of Galifianakis’ role in the film. However, the film is set to be released on Disney+. Dean Fleischer Camp’s Marcel the Shell with Shoes On is nominated for best-animated feature at the upcoming 95th annual Academy Awards. He will be directing the Lilo & Stitch adaptation from Chris Kekaniokalani Bright’s script.

Galifianakis will star in the live-action movie that follows the iconic 2002 animated film, Lilo & Stitch. The family hit grossed $273 million globally at the box office. Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois wrote and directed Lilo & Stitch. The film centers around 6-year-old Lilo and her teenage sister, Nani. The pair live in Hawai’i and adopt Stitch, an adorable, mischievous blue alien. The movie features wonderful songs, such as “Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride,” and introduced audiences outside Hawai’i to the concept of ‘ohana.

Zach Galifianakis Gets A New Role

Galifianakis marks the beginning of the studio’s casting process for the film, which is still in the early stages of pre-production. Disney has begun a wide search for their perfect Lilo and Nani. Stitch will, obviously, be made and portrayed using CGI. Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich (Rideback) are producing the Lilo & Stitch remake. Ryan Halprin (Rideback) will executive produce. Fans know Galifianakis for his work in The Hangover trilogy, but he has additional impressive credits. Some of these credits include Due Date, The Campaign, Puss in Boots, Keeping Up with the Joneses, and The Lego Batman Movie. He also won two primetime Emmy awards for his short-form series, Between Two Ferns, and is a five-time nominee.

This is not Galifianakis’ first time working with Disney. He voiced Ron in Disney’s Twentieth Century Studios and Locksmith Animation series, Ron’s Gone Wrong. He also played a live-action role for Disney previously with 2018’s A Wrinkle in Time. UTA, Brillstein Entertainment Partners, and Yorn Levine represent Galifianakis. Disney Global Box Office Hits $1 Billion In 2023

It’s only February 2023, but Disney is already dominating the box office for the year. Just six weeks into the year and they have already earned $1 billion in global box office sales. To date, the specific number is actually $1.283 billion. Historically, it has taken other studios up to a full year to reach those numbers. These impressive numbers are all thanks to the combined box office numbers of Avatar: The Way of Water and Marvel’s introduction to phase 5 of the MCU, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Additionally, the re-release of Titanic for the film’s 25th anniversary gave an additional $383 million domestically and $900 million internationally.

The long and impressive Avatar sequel by James Cameron is the primary reason for Disney’s impressive gross. Over the weekend, Avatar: The Way of Water reached a total earning of $2.2433 billion worldwide. This means that the film has officially surpassed Titanic ($2.2428 billion) as the third-highest-grossing movie of all time. In the same weekend, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania opened in theaters worldwide and performed above expectations. The film earned an impressive $225 million in its first weekend alone.

Reportedly, this is only the first of the many billions that Disney is expected to make in 2023. With movies like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (May 5), The Little Mermaid remake (May 26), Elemental (June 16), Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (June 30), and The Marvels (November 10), media sources have high expectations for the studio at hand. However, the box office has not fully recovered from the COVID-19 pandemic. Before COVID-19, Disney broke records, generating $7 billion in 2016 and 2018. Then, in 2019, it broke its own record with $11.12 billion. That’s the biggest collective box office gross of any studio in history.

Disney ended 2022 with a $4.9 billion gross at the box office, which includes domestic and international sales. Of that, Avatar: The Way of Water was the only pandemic-era release to hit a billion in gross box office sales. Shawn Robins, chief analyst at BoxOfficePro had something to say about this. He explained, “Disney was coming off such a historic run of box office years that even without the pandemic or streaming-intense strategies, it would have been a challenge to duplicate. Nevertheless, this is an encouraging start to 2023. It will still take some time, but this may be the beginning of an important turnaround for the biggest studio in the world.”

Throughout the year, you can enjoy Celebrate Soulfully experiences including, the “Tale of the Lion King” stage show, African-inspired cuisine at Troubadour Tavern and training sessions with the Dora Milaje. In February, the celebration expands with more, limited-time offerings you can discover across the resort.

‘Celebrate Gospel’ returns to Disneyland Park – Feb. 18 and 25

A resort tradition for more than a decade, “Celebrate Gospel” returns to the Fantasyland Theatre at Disneyland park on Feb. 18 and Feb. 25, from 2:30 – 7:00 p.m. PT! This powerful tribute to Gospel music showcases uplifting performances by award-winning Gospel music stars, recording artists and community choirs – each sharing their own distinctive style. If you’re at Disneyland park, you can stick around for the day’s lineup or drop by for a few songs!

Recording artist Jekalyn Carr takes the stage on Feb. 18, with special guest, singer-songwriter Melvin Crispell, III, and a cappella group Sacred Groove. On Feb. 25, “Celebrate Gospel” features GRAMMY® Award-winning singer and radio host Erica Campbell, with special guest DOE and powerhouse vocal ensemble The Singers of Soul. On both Saturdays, you can also admire the amazing talents of community choirs from across Southern California.

Lovepop will feature two cards designed in collaboration with talented artist Anthony Conley for Black History Month. Artists Ryan Riller and Larissa Marantz will be featured in artist showcases and signings from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. PT at Disneyana in Disneyland park on Feb. 25 and the WonderGround Gallery pop-up location in the Downtown Disney District on Feb. 26.

The Mood Indigo Group will fill the Great Hall of Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa with beautiful and energetic live Jazz each evening in February. At the Disneyland Hotel, overnight guests can paint an animation cel, with artwork of Princess Tiana from Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “The Princess and the Frog.”

Restaurants at the Disneyland Resort will celebrate Black History Month with limited-time menu items that are sure to feed the soul. From Feb. 9 through March 5, Black-owned food truck Wings ‘N Waffles will serve up delicious sandwiches, plates and more near the building adjacent to Star Wars Trading Post in the Downtown Disney District. Each evening in February, you can dance and groove along to live musical performances highlighting genres such as R&B, Reggae, Funk, Motown, Jazz, Doo-Wop and Gospel. The Downtown Disney LIVE! stage will host live bands nightly, with scheduled acts including LALA Brass, Forward Motion Band, The Rhythm & Blues Brothas and others. On select weekend days, the festivities start in the afternoon with inspiring Gospel music performances by Sacred Groove and The Singers of Soul.

Celebrate Soulfully Year-Round

A new video, produced in collaboration with National Geographic, will debut in the lobby of the Main Street Opera House at Disneyland park, outside of “Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln,” bringing to life the story of the historic relationship between Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. Beginning Jan. 27, the video will be played between the busts and portraits of these two giants, recognizing their work together in the fight against slavery. The special presentation is narrated by Robin Roberts and features expert testimonials and the family of Douglass, an American advocate for freedom, justice and democracy.

For a limited time beginning in mid-February at Hollywood Land in Disney California Adventure park, you may encounter Moon Girl from the Disney Branded Television and Disney+ series “Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur,” which debuts on Feb. 10 on Disney Channel and Feb. 15 on Disney+. The series follows the adventures of 13-year-old super-genius Lunella Lafayette and her 10-ton T-Rex, Devil Dinosaur, whom she accidentally brings through a portal into present-day New York City. They team up to make a difference and protect Lunella’s Lower East Side neighborhood from danger.

Normani Voices A ’90s Music Star In A New ‘The Proud Family: Louder And Prouder’ Teaser Clip

Normani may be holding off on the release of her debut solo album, but that hasn’t stopped the singer from using her voice in other arenas. Yes, the cross-over act has dropped a string of singles over the years, including “Dancing With A Stranger” featuring Sam Smith, “Motivation,” “Wild Side” featuring Cardi B, and most recently, “Fair.” Still, she’s kept her creative options open.

Now, the musician is looking to add the title actress to her growing resume. In a new teaser clip shared by Disney+, the New Orleans native will blend her vocal skills both as a voice actor and as a singer thanks to her new role on The Proud Family: Louder And Prouder. Normani will play the role of Giselle, a member of the show’s fictional ’90s music group, The Soul Vibrations.

The episode is described as the staple character Uncle Bobby (played by Cedric the Entertainer) reliving his musical glory days as the leader of the fictional band. In the clip of the scene featuring Normani, Bobby recounts to his Penny (played by Kyla Pratt) all about Giselle’s early start in the industry as his backing support. Based on its description, Normani may make several appearances throughout the season. It makes you wonder, did Normani use her admiration for ’90s music star Janet Jackson to get into character?
