Drake’s number of “friends in the industry” seems to be dwindling by the second. 2024 has especially been a revealing year for him in terms of who really messes with him and who doesn’t. But that’s not to say other years have shown just how many have some sort of disliking or even hatred for The Boy. Last year, there was some discourse online and on social media about the rift between Drake and fellow Canadian NBA star, Dillon Brooks. For those unaware, he’s a forward who’s spent most of his career on the Memphis Grizzlies. But last year, he played his first season with the Houston Rockets and is still on their roster. He’s also known for his one-sided rivalry with LeBron James.

As to why the rap superstar and an NBA starter have beef, it was pretty unknown. All we really knew was that Drake had sent some shots toward Brooks on his last album, For All The Dogs. “Another Late Night” contains the most obvious disses of them all. “Shawty ran some Dillon Brooks, can’t believe this n**** talkin’, damn.” Some thought it could be some sort of lowkey diss for that aforementioned divide between Bron and Brooks. There was also a video from FIBA with media asking the Canadian team who they liked more, Drake or Ryan Reynolds. Low and behold, the NBA wing was the only one to choose the latter.

DJ Akademiks Talks Drake & Dillon Brooks Unexpected History

But after doing some digging and a year later, it appears that the reason for this line, and many other subtle ones on the record, is because him and Drake were getting with the same girl. According to a 25-minute plus break down from DJ Akademiks, they were both sleeping around with a Moroccan Instagram model who is a scammer. The media pundit broke things down lyric by lyric and overall, it seems like a pretty petty beef.

For example, the audio snippets on “Calling For You”; you know the one where the girl is complaining about eating oxtail. That track is essentially another shot at Brooks for being broke in Mirna Habib’s eyes. Ak seemed to be trying to gas up The Boy is some way by doing all of this, but the internet doesn’t see the vision. “Ak really thinks he’s helping Drake 🤣I can see why he keeps him at a distance. This n**** got diarrhea of the mouth.” Others were also taking aim at the rapper, adding, “Drake’s arrested development is crazy. He really still acts like a 20-year-old.”

LeBron James may have had the better stat line, but Dillon Brooks had the last laugh as the Rockets blew out the Lakers 128-94. Jalen Green had a game-high 28 points while young center Alperen Sengun had 19 points of his own as the Rockets dropped the Lakers to 0-5 on the road this season. After promising to “lock up” LeBron, Brooks finished with 5 points and 4 rebounds. Meanwhile, LeBron, who had offered praise to Brooks earlier in the day, finished with 18 points and 6 rebounds. Rui Hachimura led the Lakers in scoring with 24. However, he was just one of three Lakers to reach double digits alongside LeBron and D’Angelo Russell.

Following the loss, the Lakers pointed to their injured-depleted roster. “I mean, we can’t build cohesion if we don’t have our unit. It’s that simple. It’s just, we’re very depleted on the injury side,” Lebron said after the loss. The Lakers are currently without Anthony Davis, Jaxson Hayes, Jarred Vanderbilt, Jalen Hood-Schfino, and Gabe Vincent. However, the team is hoping that Davis will be available for Friday’s game against Phoenix, the Lakers’ first of the in-season tournament group stage.

Lakers Making The Worst Kind Of History

The Lakers’ 3-5 start to the season is just a one-game improvement to their dismal 2-6 start last year. However, the team is continuing to make history in all the worst ways. According to ESPN, the 2023/24 Lakers are now the first team in NBA history to make fewer threes and shoot worse from three than their opponents in each of their first eight games. Furthermore, the team has a -74 first-quarter point differential, also a historically low mark.

However, things could be about to turn around for the Lakers. They face the Suns on Friday, a team they have already beaten this season. After that, it’s back to LA for games against the Blazers and Grizzlies. The Blazers are also 3-5 at the time of writing. Meanwhile, the Grizzlies have completely fallen apart thanks to some major injuries and Ja Morant’s suspension. Last year’s two-seed are currently 1-7 to open the season.

LeBron James have given glowing praise of his “rival” Dillon Brooks head of their matchup later tonight. “I think every player that is awarded with a contract is awarded for a reason, and they’re worthy of the contract that they get. So I think in his case, he was worthy of the contract he got. He’s put in the work since he came out of Oregon, and that’s what Houston found value in and he’s here. However, LeBron also noted that he didn’t view the game as a grudge match. “I think just the competition alone. Lakers File Complaint Over LeBron Treatment

However, Dillon Brooks isn’t the only one who seemingly has it in for LeBron. Earlier this week, the Lakers filed a complaint to the league over the officiating in their recent loss to the Heat. According to sources who spoke with ESPN, the Lakers submitted numerous clips of missed calls on LeBron during the Lakers’ one-point loss. One of the more egregious missed calls submitted was a video of Heat center Thomas Bryant making contact with LeBron’s face during a dunk attempt. LeBron attempted just four free throws during the game and has only drawn fouls on 6% of his drives this season.

“What they’re telling me is not consistent with what’s actually happening on the floor. When I went for the dunk attempt against Thomas Bryant, he clearly elbowed — like, arm straight across my face. And I asked him for the explanation — well, one of the refs said that he was straight up, hands straight in the air. Two of the refs said they were blocked and they didn’t see it,” LeBron himself said of the missed calls after the game.

Dillon Brooks’ debut for the Rockets lasted 4:33 before the infamous Canadian defender landed himself an ejection. Brooks was given a Flagrant 2 for a groin strike on Pacers center Daniel Theis and tossed from the game. However, Brooks defended himself to reporters after the game. “I tried to navigate a screen. I might have tapped him below the waist, but he got right back up, I don’t know. It’s weird that every time it happens to me, I get picked on. I guess it’s part of reputation.”

Brooks signed a four-year, $80 million deal with the Rockets after the Grizzlies let him walk in free agency. Canada secured a place in the FIBA World Cup semifinals on September 6 with a 100-89 victory over Slovenia. It marks the first-ever semifinal appearance for Canada, whose previous benchmark was sixth-place finishes in 1978 and 1982. It once again showed the might of Canada’s current golden generation. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander put up 31 points while RJ Barrett added another 24. Slovenia had been attempting to reach its first semifinal since becoming an independent nation in 1991. However, they simply didn’t have the firepower to match the Canadian output. Luka Dončić had 26 points for Slovenia.

However, Dončić was ejected partway through the second half. The Mavericks star had been chirping at the refs all night over various calls and non-calls. With 6:37 remaining, the officiating team had had enough and issued Dončić his second technical of the game. The Slovenian star returned to the court in flip-flops after the final buzzer to congratulate the Canadian players.

Dillon Brooks Also Ejected

However, Dončić wasn’t the only NBA star who left the game earlier. Dillon Brooks, the newly acquired Houston Rocket, left the game shortly before Dončić did. Like Luka Dončić, Brooks was booted after picking up his second technical of the game. It’s unknown at this time whether Brooks will be available for selection against Serbia later this week.

The result was a crushing blow to Slovenia, who went into the half tied at 50. However, Canada opened the third period with a 19-5 run and never looked back. They will now face Serbia for a place in the final. If they can overcome another Eastern European powerhouse, they will face either the US or Germany in the final. All four semifinalists have booked their place at the Olympic tournament next summer in Paris. Dillon Brooks appears to be on the outs with the Memphis Grizzlies. Following the initial report, Brooks’ agent, Mike George, has blasted The Athletic reporter Shams Charania.

According to Charania, the franchise told unrestricted free agent Dillon Brooks that he would not be brought back to the team “under any circumstances.”

Brooks has had a strong personality throughout his Grizzlies tenure, most recently making headlines due to his prodding of Lakers superstar LeBron James in the first-round series. Now, the Grizzlies state Brooks has been alerted that the team will move on, opting for both sides to receive a fresh start. Additional incidents occurred throughout the season with Donovan Mitchell and Draymond Green.

The Grizzlies will now look to replace the three-and-D player in the offseason.

Hitting Twitter, George blasted Charania. He wrote, “@ShamsCharnia the leader of spreading false news and attacking players. Why any player in the league talks to this guy blows my mind. #weirdo”

Dillon Brooks also spoke out. After losing in the playoffs, Brooks had been silent, opting to skip post-game media availability and receiving a $25,000 fine in the process.

Brooks was on hand at the Grizzlies’ season wrap-up session and gave his thoughts to the media. “That’s who I am,” Brooks said. “I’m a competitor. I compete. I don’t think it got LeBron ‘geeked’ up. He’s back in the playoffs, it’d been a little while. He was ready to play.”

Much has been said about Dillon Brooks. The Memphis Grizzlies forward put himself in the spotlight during the team’s first-round matchup against the Lakers. Primarily, Brooks angled himself as beefing with LeBron James. However, Brooks struggled to back up his words on the court. The Grizzlies would be eliminated in six games by the Lakers. Brooks averaged 10.5 points per game versus the Lakers, even while being frequently left open on the perimeter. His three-point shooting sat at a dismal 23.8%, going 10-for-42 from behind the arc.

Brooks’ trash-talking and other off-court behaviors appear to have cost him his future in Memphis. Reports suggest that Brooks, who has played for the Grizzlies since a draft day trade in 2017, will be allowed to explore free agency. During the playoffs, Brooks also told the media that he felt that they had turned him into a “villain”. Now his representatives are taking that one step further.

Brooks’ Agent Says Shams Charaina Is Spreading “Fake News”

Shams Charaina is a very well-respected basketball reporter who has been with The Athletic since 2018. However, he appears to have drawn the ire of several people for initially breaking the story that the Grizzlies were allowing Brooks to walk in the offseason. Specifically, people point at Charaina as “scapegoating” Brooks for the Grizzlies’ first-round exit. Notably, Brooks’ comments during the Lakers series do appear to have impacted his future with the team. “We’re going to take a different approach as it pertains to [trash talk] next season,” Grizzlies general manager Zach Kleiman said Sunday during the team’s exit interviews. “You’ll see a different approach from this team, but at the same time, confidence is important. … There’s a line there, certainly.”

This sentiment was echoed by Brooks’ agent, Mike George. George spent most of May 3 retweeting media clips of people criticizing the Grizzlies for their decision. As former NBA pro, and well-known beef haver, JJ Reddick sounded off on First Take, George added his thoughts to Reddicks’ defense of his client. “@ShamsCharania the leader of spreading false news and attacking players. Why any player in the league talks to this guy blows my mind. #weirdo”. George is obviously going to defend his client, who will likely find a landing spot in the NBA next season. Dillon Brooks has easily been one of the most hated players in the entire NBA over the past few months. Overall, this is due to the fact that he never shuts up. Although his trash talk has worked on some of his opponents, it usually falls flat on everyone else. This was especially true in the first round after what he said about LeBron James. After winning Game 2, he made some shortsighted comments about the GOAT of this generation. Subsequently, his team lost in an embarrassing fashion.

Throughout the first-round series, Brooks barely averaged 10 points per game. His performance was simply abysmal, and with his contract expiring, there had been rumors of what could happen next. Hilariously, this came with a bunch of jokes about learning Chinese and going to play for the Shanghai Sharks. However, it seems like those jokes could very well become a reality. Today, it was reported by Shams Charania of The Athletic that Brooks is not coming back to the Grizzlies.

Either way, things are not looking good for Brooks and his career. For now, there isn’t a single team that is jumping out as a potential landing spot for him. Consequently, his career is truly up in the air right now. It’s a sad reality, albeit one that Brooks will have to continue to deal with over these coming months.
