Kendrick Lamar Gets Mic Cut At Austin City Limits After Defying Curfew

Kendrick Lamar found out the hard way that festival curfews are no joke. Lamar was the final act of Friday night at Austin City Limits and was informed of a strict 10pm curfew. At 10:02pm, a video posted by a fan showed Lamar still on stage. “I was told y’all have a curfew here. But Imma tell you what I told them. They gonna have to cut my mic because we ain’t done,” Lamar told a raucous crowd. At 10:18pm, the festival organizers did indeed cut Lamar’s mic. Lamar bowed and blew kisses to the crowd before finally leaving the stage a few minutes later.

Austin City Limits is one of the biggest music festivals in Texas and is absolutely packed with all-star musical talent. The show’s second day features names like Rina Sawayama, Shania Twain, Alanis Morissette, and the Foo Fighters. Meanwhile, Hozier, GloRilla, and Mumford & Sons are scheduled for Sunday. Lamar will return for the second weekend next week. Other hip-hop artists at the festival include Lil (Friday) and Coi Leray (Saturday).

Måneskin Cover Kendrick Lamar

Elsewhere, Lamar’s music got an unusual cover. Italian rockers Måneskin, who won Eurovision in 2021, covered “HUMBLE” during a show at Madison Square Garden in late September. “We cannot be the last rock band. But maybe we can be the first rap band,” lead singer Damiano David told the crowd before launching into the well-executed cover. While their claim about being the first “rap band” is debatable, it’s always a lot of fun to see what Måneskin will do next.

However, it’s a lot better than a different Lamar “homage” that came out of Europe last month. A TV karaoke competition in Poland went viral for all the wrong reasons after a contestant was seen performing “HUMBLE” while donning blackface. Even worse, the man in question, Kuba Szmajkowski, went on to win that episode of Your Face Sounds Familiar. As mentioned, the episode went viral online and caused the show to get a lot of backlash.

Drake Drops $10K A Minute After Performing Over Detroit Curfew: Report

Drake knows how to put on a show and he won’t let exterior factors, such as a curfew, from providing his fans with an incredible performance. With the launch of the It’s All A Blur tour, the Canadian rapper made a stop in Detroit for the second city on his North American run. While he and 21 Savage stunned the audience with performances of fan favorites, it appears as though they were running over time for whatever reason. Still, Drizzy ensured that his fans got their money worth, especially after shelling out hundreds of dollars to see him perform.

Just when Drake and 21 Savage got into the thick of their set together in Detroit, the “Search & Rescue” star confirmed that they went over the time restrictions. In fact, he revealed that it costs roughly $10,000 per minute beyond the city’s curfew. Still, the rapper didn’t sweat and opted to pay the fine rather than cut the performance short for his fans. According to All Hip Hop, Drake ultimately racked up a 6-figure fine.

Drake Exceeds Detroit Curfew

As the rapper stood in front of the audience in a red apron, alongside 21, he made it clear that the reported $230K fine that he had to cough up was pocket change to him. “It’s $10,000 a minute to stay in this building past curfew,” he told the audience. “I don’t give a f***. We’re doing this whole song, let’s go,” he added to a sea of applause from his Detroit fans. Concertgoers claimed that Drake performed for roughly 23 minutes after the curfew, which would amount to nearly a quarter of a million dollars.

Clearly, Drake’s love for Detroit is strong. The Canadian rapper’s performance in Motor City included a few updates on his forthcoming album, For All The Dogs. Drake confirmed a collaboration with Nicki Minaj would appear on the tracklist and he revealed that the project is currently in the mixing stages. Although it’s not clear when the project might hit DSPs, it seems as though Drake is still putting in work while he’s on the road.

Coachella Hit With $100K+ In Fines For Violating City Curfew

Coachella returned in all of its glory this past weekend but it didn’t go down without a few hiccups. Fans flocked to Indio, CA for one of the world’s biggest festivals as some of the most exciting artists took the stage. Unfortunately, it seems like a few logistic issues led to some hefty fines for the festival. According to Pitchfork, the city of Indio, CA fined Coachella and its organizers over $100,000 after they violated the city’s curfew on all three nights.

Representatives of Indio confirmed that they issued a $117,000 fine to the festival organizers. In accordance with local law, Coachella was supposed to have their festival wrapped up by 1 a.m. PST on Friday and Saturday and midnight PST on Sunday. However, as previously reported, Frank Ocean was late by nearly an hour to his own performance. While already a short set, he already went 25 minutes over his set. On Friday, the festival breached the 1 a.m. curfew by 25 minutes while Saturday went 22 minutes past the time limit.

Indio and Goldenvoice, the promoters behind Coachella, struck an agreement in 2013 surrounding festival regulations. The money collected from fines would ultimately go toward Indio’s General Fund for operating costs, police, fire departments, and public works. As part of the agreement, Indio fined Coachella $20,000 for going five minutes past curfew. Each minute afterward would amount to an additional $1,000. With weekend two around the corner, hopefully, they manage to avoid facing further fines.

The case surrounding Frank Ocean caused an uproar among festivalgoers and fans at home. For starters, he decided to cut the live stream for his highly-anticipated return to the stage. Then, he appeared nearly an hour late before abruptly informing the crowd that the show was over. Shortly after, reports emerged claiming that Ocean threatened to nix his set altogether Coachella failed to honor his last-minute stage design changes. Some fans were upset but it turned out that Frank Ocean suffered an ankle injury prior to Coachella. His doctors told him that he needed to change his stage design, which reportedly included an ice rink and hockey players. We’ll keep you posted on any more updates surrounding Coachella’s fines.

Frank Oceans Cut Coachella Set Short After Showing Up An Hour Late

Frank Ocean’s headlining set at Coachella didn’t go exactly how fans would’ve hoped. The first weekend of Coachella wrapped up on Sunday night with a headlining set from the enigmatic singer. Unfortunately, some felt like it wasn’t worth the three-year anticipation. For starters, Frank Ocean’s set wasn’t live streamed on YouTube to the ire of his fans watching at home. Even so, Coachella ticketholders also weren’t entirely happy with the experience. Don’t get it confused, people were happy he showed up at all but logistics and scheduling problems led to disappointment.

The “Swim Good” artist appeared on stage nearly an hour late for his first performance since 2017. Coachella scheduled Frank Ocean’s headlining spot for 10:05 p.m.. However, he appeared on stage at around 10:55 p.m. – nearly an hour before the festival’s usual 12 a.m. curfew. The singer abruptly cut his set short after performing a cover of The Isley Brothers’ “At Your Best (You Are Love).” “Guys, I’m being told it’s curfew, so that’s the end of the show. Thank you so much,” he told the audience before leaving the stage.

Frank Ocean Cuts Coachella Early

Despite the short set, Frank Ocean did provide fans with a bit more insight into his creative process as of late. On top of teasing a snippet of new music, his stage set-up was designed to appear as an intimate recording session. Then, midway through his set, he hosted a rave intermission, courtesy of DJ Crystalmess. However, he also suggested that he does have new music on the way as he explained why he agreed to perform. “I want to talk about why I’m here because it’s not because of a new album… Not that there’s not a new album,” he said before paying homage to his late brother, Ryan.

There’s no doubt that Frank Ocean had one of the most anticipated sets of the festival this year. It marked his return to Coachella in roughly a decade, though it wasn’t necessarily supposed to be this long. He was tapped as the headliner for the 2020 festival but due to the pandemic, Coachella was cancelled. The following year, Goldenvoice CEO and Coachella’s co-founder Paul Tollet confirmed that they would have Frank Ocean perform to make it up to the fans. Check out some footage & reactions from Frank Ocean’s set below.

Travis Scott’s Rolling Loud Set Ends Abruptly During “Sicko Mode” Due To Curfew

Unfortunately for hip-hop lovers, another Rolling Loud festival is gearing up for its final roster of performances for the season this evening (March 5). The past two days have been jam-packed with plenty of noteworthy moments. Among them was Playboi Carti debuting new music during his headlining set, as well as Nicki Minaj and Lil Wayne reuniting on old favourites like “Truffle Butter” and “High School.” Those who didn’t attend the Louisana native’s set on Saturday (March 4) could likely be found elsewhere on the grounds, watching Travis Scott bring his signature rage to the stage.

As Variety notes, the father of two only got about 30 minutes of performance time. Afterward, his sound was abruptly cut off during “Sicko Mode.” This happened around 11 PM, which Rolling Loud had previously widely publicized as the mandatory end time for all headliners. Even as his music was shut off, Scott still sang for the crowd as a goodbye message was shown on the screen.

La Flame’s Set Cut Short

“Thank you very much, I love y’all. I wish I could do more but they’re making me go,” the Houston native told the audience. In response, they didn’t hesitate to let out loud boos, making their displeasure with the short concert well-known. Rolling Loud marked Scott’s return to the festival stage for the first time since 2021’s deadly Astroworld tragedy. Many were disappointed that it lacked the rapper’s usual strength and stamina.

According to TMZ, La Flame was possibly late for his set’s start time, which would explain the lacklustre half an hour-long performance. Elsewhere, some are speculating that RL maintained strict rules to avoid having another disaster unfold during Scott’s time on stage. Still, it seems those who did attend stayed safe while enjoying tracks like “Antidote,” “MAFIA,” and “Praise God.”

At this time, many fans are waiting for an update on the Rodeo hitmaker, as past reports claimed he would be turning himself in to the NYPD following his festival appearance. He’s facing accusations of assault and a potential lawsuit from another disgruntled person after seemingly throwing their phone.
