SOURCE SPORTS: Deion Sanders Not Eyeing Coaching in NFL, Says He Has ‘Work to Do’ at Colorado

‘Elevate or Terminate,’ Deion Sanders Is the University of Colorado’s New Head Coach

If you thought Deion Sanders was jumping ship any time soon to take his coaching talents to the NFL, guess again, think again. He recently reaffirmed his commitment to the Colorado Buffaloes.

Sanders stood firm in his dedication to the Buffaloes’ program following an eventful spring game where his star sons, Shedeur and Shilo, showcased their skills on the field. There has been some speculation about a potential NFL move to join his sons, but Sanders clarified that his focus remains steadfast on leading the Buggaloes to success. After the scrimmage, Sanders addressed the media. Sanders emphasized his commitment to the team, especially with both sons poised to enter their final collegiate seasons. Notably, Shedeur, in particular, is receiving plenty of attention as a potential top quarterback prospect for the 2025 NFL Draft.

Despite the lure of the NFL and ongoing recruiting efforts, Sanders assured recruits and their families about his focus on the Buffaloes program in the immediate future. With promising commitments from the class of 2025, including two recent additions, Sanders remains optimistic about the program’s future and is ready to guide incoming players to success.

“I tell them the truth,” Sanders said at the presser. “I tell them I’m a father, not a baby daddy. I don’t follow my kids. I pave roads for my kids. I build generational wealth for my kids. I lead my kids. I don’t follow my kids. So I do not plan on following my kids to the NFL. I have work to do here.” Sanders added “I absolutely love it here, and I would never think a young brother from the South would really love it in this part of the country but I really do. … The fan base that we have here … I just want to really bless you with a tremendously successful team. I really do. That’s my heart.”

After a disappointing but improved season where the Buffaloes finished a 4-8, Colorado distributed 28,424 tickets for Saturday’s game. That was still the second-largest crowd for a spring game in school history. Colorado branded the weekend with a Black & Gold theme, supported by a talent show earlier in the week and even a concert featuring Lil Wayne slated for Saturday.

Before the game, Sanders thanked the crowd for braving the elements as the weather was not ideal. He made a top-class statement honoring 99-year-old Superman Peggy Coppom: “Our goal is, we’re going to get you to a bowl game, lady.” He finished with more confidence and his positive outlook. ”I love what we’re building in this locker room, and if you’re not a part of that thought process or that desire, you don’t fit. So now you see the gallop to the portal, you see that, but even with those guys, I wish them the best.”

Deion Sanders Already Knows Where He Wants Shedeur Sanders To Play: “Certain Cities Where It Ain’t Gonna Happen”

Deion Sanders says that his son, Shedeur Sanders, and teammate Travis Hunter, will only play for certain teams in the NFL. Appearing on the Million Dollaz Worth Of Game podcast, the Colorado head coach discussed his plans for each of his star players’ future NFL careers. For Shedeur and Hunter, he expects: “Top-4,” in the draft and hinted at a scenario similar to Eli Manning.

He explained: “Anywhere from 1-4, one of them is gonna be 1. One of them is gonna be 1, and the latter one would not go behind 4. Now, all this is subjective because I know where I want, kind of want them to go — and let’s not forget Shilo (Sanders). But I know where I want them to go. So, there’s certain cities where it ain’t gonna happen. It’s gonna be an Eli.”

As both a receiver and defensive back, he recorded 23 tackles and three interceptions while also notching 721 receiving yards and five touchdowns. Deion Sanders Promises CFP Run From Colorado Next Season

Deion Sanders has boldly promised that Colorado will go from four wins to a top-12 team in the nation next season. “I want those problems, give me those problems. Leaving out a Florida State and a Georgia, that’s why I’m glad it’s increased next year, and guess who is going to be in?” Sanders said on The Dan LeBatard Show.

Next year, the CFP will expand from four teams to 12. The field will comprise the six highest-ranked conference champions plus the six highest-ranked non-champions. This means that to qualify, Colorado either needs to win the Big 12 (and maintain the Big 12’s status as a Power 5 division) or finish ranked in the top 12 at season’s end. That’s a monumental ask from a team that rarely looked competitive beyond their non-conference slate this season.

Coaches Doubt Colorado Will Turn Around Next Season

However, the odds are stacked against Sanders. Several college coaches are skeptical that things will improve for Deion Sanders and Colorado in 2024. Six coaches spoke anonymously to The Athletic. All six cast doubt on Sanders’ notion that the Buffaloes are headed in the right direction. Many of the coaches pointed to Sanders’ recruiting as a major sticking point. While Sanders did well recruiting at the skill positions, both the offensive and defensive lines were some of the worst in college football. Colorado gave up the second most sacks in the country with 56. Furthermore, as one coach noted to The Athletic, the transfer portal will contain around 30 “Power 5-caliber” offensive linemen. However, 65 Power 5 schools are vying for their commitment. Sanders did get a boost in this department, recently earning the commitment of the best OL recruit of 2024.

Furthermore, many coaches noted that Sanders has not been good to his coaches. He demoted offensive coordinator Sean Lewis after a 3-1 start because the Buffs were blown out by Oregon. Lewis has since left to become the head coach at San Diego State. The coaches who spoke with The Athletic predicted an exodus of coaching talent out of Colorado, with Sanders struggling to attract the game’s top assistants. For his part, Sanders has so far teased that former NFL star Warren Sapp will be joining his coaching staff next season. Sapp has no coaching experience at any level. However, he is the sort of headline-grabbing name Sanders has chased throughout his time at Colorado.

Is Colorado Ready For The Big 12?

Next season, Colorado joins the Big 12. Alongside them comes Utah, Arizona, and Arizona State. All three schools either beat Colorado or lost by less than a score this season. Traditional Big 12 powerhouses Texas and Oklahoma will be gone. However, Colorado is by no means expected to suddenly become a title contender. Nine of the conference’s teams finished with a better record than Colorado this year. So did all three of the other Pac-12 teams also moving to the conference.

Shedeur Sanders is expected to return under center for the Buffs, but is that really the right move? Sanders missed the final game of the Buffs due to a back fracture. With no real improvement on the offensive line expected, Sanders can expect to take another pummelling behind the line next season. Not only will that affect his draft stock, but it could also impact his innate ability to play. However, the “Deion Doubters” will have to wait until commitment days, the portal, and the 2024 season itself to see if Sanders sinks or floats in Year 2.

Deion Sanders Teases Hall Of Fame Addition To Coaching Staff

Deion Sanders has claimed that he will be adding Hall of Famer Warren Sapp to his coaching staff. “I’m excited about Coach Sapp. He’s a dear friend that I love to life, and he’s going to be invaluable to what he brings to the table. As far as the recruits as well, they’re going to love him,” Sanders said during his weekly radio show. According to Sanders, Sapp has already spent some time around the team this season. “After practice, he was in the hot tub with the whole darn defensive line, and he was just going over stuff and it was unbelievable. There’s probably 4,000 pounds in the hot tub,” Sanders noted.

Sapp is an NFL legend. A first-round pick in 1995, Sapp played in the NFL until 2007 for the Buccaneers and Raiders. He was part of the formidable defensive line that helped the Buccs capture their first Super Bowl title. After he retired, his number was retired by the Buccs and later, Sapp was a first-ballot Hall of Famer in 2013.

Sanders Lands Top 300 Recruit

Meanwhile, Sanders has been busy in the recruiting scene. Two-way athlete Kamron Mikell, ranked #143 in ESPN‘s Top 300, chose Colorado over Georgia, Alabama, and Tennessee. Mikell becomes Sanders’ third commit from the Top 300, joining #70 Aaron Butler and #230 Brandon Davis-Swain. At 6’1 and 180 lbs, Mikell is expected to play a similar role to Travis Hunter has for the Buffs this season. However, while the early signing period is still a few weeks away, concerns are starting to form that Sanders’ 2024 recruiting class has just nine commits. While Sanders will likely add some on national signing day, he is also expected to heavily utilize the transfer portal once again.

Furthermore, the Mikell commitment is a bright spot in a dark time for Colorado. The Buffs went from 3-0 to 4-7 after a rough ride in the Pac-12’s final season. Their bowl eligibility window was finally shut after the Buffs were blown out last Friday by Washington State. The rapid descent back into the Colorado of old raised questions about Sanders’ effectiveness as a coach, as well as his recruiting style. After all, while the offense went largely unchanged, all but one of the defensive starters is a Sanders-acquired transfer. And the defense is where Colorado has struggled the most. The Buffs close out the season against Utah tomorrow.

Deion Sanders Lands Another Top 300 Recruit

Deion Sanders added to his 2024 recruiting class with another big commit on Thanksgiving. Angel Reese Channels Deion Sanders

Meanwhile, down in Louisiana, Angel Reese is finding strength in Sanders’ words. Despite the mystery surrounding her absence from LSU, Reese has not been silent. On November 22, Reese posted a video to her TikTok account, showing her walking around her apartment in a fluffy pink bathrobe. The audio of the video is a speech by Sanders talking about how little he thinks about his haters. Furthermore, Reese posted a video of the same speech to her Instagram last weekend. It appears to be a direct response to the new wave of speculation and hate that she has received since the drama began to unfurl at LSU.

As mentioned, there appears to be no timetable for Reese’s return, not that she appears to be sweating her absence too much regardless. On Thanksgiving, Reese posted a video recreating the viral “Cheese Rice and Byron” Sidetalk clip. Through four games played, Reese is still averaging a double-double with 17 points and 10.3 rebounds. That puts her second on the team in both categories. Reese’s situation is a developing story and we’ll have any updates as and when they emerge.

Deion Sanders & Colorado Lose Fourth Consecutive Game

A field goal as time expired doomed Colorado to a 34-31 loss to Arizona and their fourth loss in a row. For most of the game, the Buffs had gone toe-to-toe with the ranked Wildcats. However, both defenses had stepped up after Arizona tied the game at 31 early in the fourth quarter. After four punts (two per team), Colorado missed an opportunity to take the lead through a 44-yard field goal. That gave Arizona just under five minutes to methodically drive their way down the field and seal the game with a 24-yard kick of their own.

The result knocks the Buffs down to 4-6 on the season and 1-6 in conference play. Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders threw for 262 yards and two touchdowns. However, he also took three more sacks, taking his season total to 48. Furthermore, Arizona’s win comes amidst a period of uncertainty for the university. A $240 million deficit in the school’s budget has lead the administration to announce that everything from layoffs to terminating some varsity athletics programs will be considered as a remedy.

Colorado’s Bowl Window Nearly Shut

Furthermore, the loss almost entirely eliminates Colorado’s chances of playing in a bowl game next month. Bowl eligibility requires a 6-6 record, except in highly unusual circumstances. To achieve that this season, the Buffs would need back-to-back road wins against Washington State and ranked Utah over the next fortnight. While a win against Washington State is feasible, Colorado would likely need a miracle to overcome the Utes.

While Sanders has stated that the team cares about wins, not bowl games, even he would admit that the season has turned into a disaster. Just a few months ago, Colorado was the talk of the college football world, having gone 3-0 in its non-conference schedule. However, they are now once against one of the worst teams in the Pac-12. Furthermore, questions have been raised once more about Sanders’ recruiting style. Despite overhauling essentially the entire roster, Sanders objectively failed to bring in solid units for the O- and D-lines.

Shedeur Sanders’ Rolls-Royce Booted By Colorado Campus Police

The Rolls-Royce of Colorado Buffaloes starting quarterback Shedeur Sanders was booted by campus police this week. A now-deleted video of the car was posted to social media by a member of the Sports Information department, showing the boot on the expensive car. It’s unclear how much Sanders was fined for the parking violation by the campus police. But it’s quickly becoming a growing problem for the team.

As mentioned, Shedeur is just the latest member of the football team to feel the wrath of campus parking enforcement. Back in September, Shedeur’s father, head coach Deion Sanders, saw his Lamborghini clamped. Meanwhile, defensive back Cam’Ron Silmon Craig posted proof of a $3000 fine given for 52 parking violations. “It seems to be an ongoing problem on campus that needs to be fixed. We’ve had cars getting towed for parking near Folsom Field,” one player told journalist Josh Tolle.

Colorado Eyeing Tough End To The Season

If parking issues were bad enough, the Buffs must find a way to end the season on a high note. The Buffs dropped their third consecutive game last weekend, falling below .500 for the first time this season. It came as a late rally against Oregon State fell short and the Buffs were knocked off 26-19. It’s now been a full month since Colorado’s last win, a 27-24 victory over Arizona State. Furthermore, the bowl window is closing bit by bit. Colorado, who are 4-5, need two wins from their last three games to be bowl-eligible.

Unfortunately for the Buffs, they have a rough schedule to close out the Pac-12 season. Up next is #21 Arizona, who are coming off three consecutive victories against ranked opponents. Then there is Washington State, who are 4-5 after a white-hot start to the season. Finally, they end the season against #18 Utah, who are 7-2. While Sanders has said the team isn’t thinking about bowl season, it would be an incredibly disappointing end to a season that started off so well. The Wildcats are 10.5 favorites against the Buffs this weekend.

Deion Sanders Says He “Loves” His Players Fighting During Practice

Deion Sanders said on his radio show this week that he “loves” his players fighting during practices. “We’ve had a great week of practice. We had a couple of fights, which I like. It’s a great thing. I always want to know who won because I keep records. I don’t break them up. Some coaches break them up. I don’t. Some guys fight hoping for the break up. No, we’re going to let you go. So, we did have a couple fights this week, and I love it. They’ve been getting after it. It’s almost like a rededication. It’s almost like a refocus. I love where we are. We’ve had great practices this week, offense, defense, as well as special teams,” Sanders said.

However, it’s not the first time that Sanders has expressed this opinion. Back in August, Sanders expressed his disappointment that several players did not get involved in a fight that broke out during practice. In a video posted to YouTube by his family’s media company, Sanders could be seen telling at least two players “If one fights, we all fight”.

Colorado Need Two Wins To Go Bowling

Great practices aside, all is not well in Boulder. The Buffs dropped their third consecutive game last weekend, falling below .500 for the first time this season. Colorado Rose Bowl Theft Reportedly Committed By Recruits Visiting UCLA

According to The Coach JB Show, two high school players on a recruiting visit at UCLA are reportedly responsible for the theft of items belonging to visiting Colorado Buffaloes players. Jason Brown, who appeared on Netflix’s Last Chance U as the head coach of Independence Community College in Kansas, claims that two students from Beaumont High School had been arrested by Pasadena Police. Furthermore, Brown claimed that the information came directly from the players’ coach.

Pasadena Police have confirmed that two underage suspects were detained over the theft. At least three Colorado players had jewelry stolen, while other items such as headphones and cash were also taken from the visitors’ locker room at the Rose Bowl. “The Pasadena Police Department would like to thank those who reported leads to our tip line. The information and support are invaluable and play a crucial role in helping us ensure safety and security in our community. Our detectives worked diligently to follow up on all leads, which resulted in the quick execution of search warrants. The investigation will be ongoing. More information will follow as available,” the department said in a recent statement.
