Drea Kelly Slams Critics Blaming Her For R Kelly’s Alleged Abuse Of Their Daughter

In October, TVEI Streaming Network dropped a two-episode documentary, Karma: A Daughter’s Journey. In it, R Kelly’s daughter Buku Abi opens up about the alleged abuse she suffered at the hands of her father. “I was too scared to tell anybody, I was too scared to tell my mom,” she said in part, “I really feel like that one millisecond completely just changed my whole life and changed who I was as a person and changed the sparkle I had and the light I used to carry… I just remember waking up to him touching me. And I didn’t know what to do, so I just kind of laid there, and I pretended to be asleep.”

Abi continued, alleging that she and her mother Drea Kelly tried to file an anonymous police report. According to her, her father was allegedly not prosecuted because the statute of limitations had passed. Social media users quickly flooded her with words of support, but her mother didn’t have the same experience.

Drea Kelly Says She Did Everything She Could Amid R Kelly’s Alleged Abuse

During a recent interview with Carlos King, Drea addressed those who blamed her for her daughter’s abuse after she came forward. She recalled allegedly going to the police after receiving a concerning call from Abi but being told there was nothing she could do to get her away from Kelly. “And that was probably the most painful experience of my life,” she said. “Because I did everything that I could […] I did everything I could just to have the police tell me I could do nothing. And my baby carried that pain around for years trying to protect me.”

This isn’t all Drea discussed during the interview, however. She also defended her decision to keep her ex’s last name after they went their separate ways. She argued that she earned the right to it by birthing her children and contributing significantly to the choreography for Kelly’s tours, music videos, and live performances.

R. Kelly’s lawyer is responding to the singer’s daughter after she claimed he was sexually abused in a new documentary.

In Karma: A Daughter’s Journey, a two-part documentary that debuted on TVEI Streaming Network, Buku Abi reveals that she reported the alleged abuse to her mother, Andrea Kelly, in 2009 when she was just 10 years old.

“He was everything to me,” Abi, now 26, says in the emotional first episode, which is now available to stream. “For a long time, I didn’t want to believe it. I didn’t think someone, even as flawed as he was, would do something like that to me.”

Though Abi, whose real name is Joann Kelly, does not delve deeply into the specifics of the abuse in this initial episode, she shares how fear kept her from speaking out for years. “I was too scared to tell anybody. I was too scared to tell my mom.”

In response, Kelly’s lawyer, Jennifer Bonjean, appeared on the Banfield show on News Nation to dispel the claim.

“The allegation was investigated by the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services,” Bonjean said. “He’s under criminal investigation at the time. He’s probably the most highly-investigated individual on the planet when it comes to these types of claims. The Illinois DCFS determined that the allegation was unfounded many years ago.

“He certainly denies it, and it’s our position that, if there was any merit to the claims, certainly charges would have been brought.”

R. Kelly’s daughter says that she has a “heartbreaking secret” to reveal that will come to light in her new documentary about her troubled father.

Buku Abi aka Joanne Kelly is slated to drop her doc titled R. Kelly’s Karma: A Daughter’s Journey, which will air on October 11 on TVEI streaming service. The new documentary will feature interviews from Buku herself, her brother Robert Kelly Jr. and R. Kelly’s ex-wife Drea.

In the doc’s trailer, Buku tearfully admits, “For a long time, I didn’t even want to believe that it happened. I didn’t know that even if he was a bad person that he would do something to me. I really feel like that one millisecond completely just changed my whole life.” Buku adds, “Nobody wants to be the child of the father that is out here hurting women and children.”

His ex-wife says in the trailer, “What he did to me, he did to me, but you didn’t have to do it to my kids.”

Meanwhile, R. Kelly has been trying to have the convictions for his sexual crimes overturned, petitioning the United States Supreme Court in July on the basis that his alleged crimes occurred decades ago and the charges therefore fall outside the statute of limitations.

The Supreme Court will decide whether to hear the appeal in the coming months.
