No two artists have better represented the ongoing cultural takeover of Nigerian Afrobeats than Tems and Asake. While the latter made waves with his third album, Lungu Boy, the former released her debut album, Born In The Wild to commercial success and critical acclaim, achieving the highest peak for an album by a Nigerian female artist and received a nomination for Best Global Music Album at next year’s Grammy Awards.
So, it’s only right that they close out their stellar year together with the video for “Get It Right,” from Born In The Wild. The mid-tempo vibes of the song are paired with yin-and-yang imagery in the video, with the majority of Tems’ scenes shot on a white background with a matching ensemble, right down to the white wig evoking another “African” icon: Storm from the X-Men. Naturally, that leaves Asake to take on the black-on-black aesthetic, including Matrix-leather everything — including a nearby couch — and sunglasses. Their scenes together reverse this dynamic, with Asake donning a white long sleeve and Tems rocking a black leather dress.

In the past few years, Tems has become known as one of the foremost ambassadors of the African pop scene. In 2022, she became the first African artist to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100; last year, she and several of her countrymen performed at the NBA All-Star Game; and this year, she released her debut album, Born In The Wild, and went on her first headlining tour to promote it.
Today, she dropped the video for album standout, “Turn Me Up,” which combines her R&B-flavored approach to African pop sounds with Caribbean flair, adding a little dancehall styling to the already heady brew. For the video, she went straight to the source, shooting in Jamaica with director Loris Russier, highlighting the natural beauty of the island and the grittiness of its urban additions. Throughout the video, Jamaican rudeboys mean mug the camera to let viewers know that while the island is a gorgeous place to live, you’ve still got to be tough to survive there.
2024 continued to be a banner year for Tems, as she was also nominated for three Grammy Awards: Best R&B Song (“Burning”), Best African Music Performance (“Love Me JeJe”), and Best Global Music Album (Born In The Wild). We’ll see how she fares at the 67th Grammy Awards next year.

At long last, Tems‘ debut album is finally here. Tonight (June 7), the Nigerian R&B hitmaker has shared Born In The Wild, her long-awaited full-length project. With her years of features, EPs, and viral tracks, Tems delivered on her promise of pure quality. On Born In The Wild is “Free Fall,” a collaboration with J. Cole.
Neither Tems or Cole avoid facing difficult emotions, but on “Free Fall,” the two find themselves confused as to how to move forward with a love that is draining them of their energies.
“Hopeless, in the moment / I free fall straight into you / I don’t know if I can fight what you do in my mind / Or and more can collide with you,” sings Tems on the song’s intro.
Cole hops in, noting that he cam empathize, however, he feels frustrated at the woman’s inability to open up to him.
“Toxic, who would’vе thought whats comin’ was a plot twist / Soon as you let me in, you start hunting for the locksmith / Now thе key I once had to your heart does not fit / I got three choices, bad on your door or lock-pick / Or walk away confused at your logic,” raps Cole on his verse.
Though Cole’s hot streak of verses has recently been called into question, recently with his verse of Cash Cobain’s “Grippy” and his removal of the Kendrick Lamar diss track “7 Minute Drill” from streaming platforms. But with “Free Fall,” he bounces back, and makes a return to melodic, rhythmic form.
And ultimately, Tems’ debut album proves to be worth the wait, and only the beginning of a long, promising career.
You can listen to “Free Fall” above.

This week will be a big one for Tems in what’s already been an exciting 18 months for the Nigerian singer. On Friday, June 7, Tems will release her debut album Born In The Wild and ahead of its arrival, the singer stopped by NPR’s Tiny Desk to preview a couple of songs from the project and revisit highlights from her discography. She began with “Me & U,” the lead single off Born In The Wild, which was received a slightly stripped-back but equally enjoyable treatment thanks to support from her band and vocalists. Next came “Ice T,” the highlight from her 2020 breakout project For Broken Ears.
Afterward, Tems unveiled previously unheard songs, “Unfortunate” and “Forever,” from Born In The Wild. The former leans more into R&B and afrobeats as a reminder of Tems’ versatile while “Forever” strikes as a truly soaring record that highlights her growth. To close her set, Tems performed “Love Me Jeje,” the third single from Born In The Wild which interpolates Seyi Sodimu’s 1997 hit of the same name.
Tems’ Tiny Desk set comes days after she revealed the official tracklist for Born In The Wild. The album features 18 songs and guest appearances from Asake and J. Cole. She’s also set to embark on the Born In The Wild Tour with Naomi Sharon and Lekan.
You can watch Tems’ NPR Tiny Desk in the video above.
