It was a day of civic engagement, community outreach and fellowship on Friday in Atlanta as Killer Mike welcomed an array of rappers, actors and athletes to his old neighborhood. The multi-time Grammy award winner once again teamed up with the organizations Mobilize Justice, The AAPI Victory Fund, Working Families and SEIU  to galvanize people to go and vote.

In the early part of the day, Mike was joined by Marvin Bing Founder and Leader of Mobilize Justice, and his band of luminaries Beanie Sigel, Jadakiss, Blacc Sam, Jorge “JP” Peniche of The Marathon, Jadakiss, Tamika Mallory, Latoya Tonodeo from “Power Book II: Ghost,” Smoke DZA and Wayno as they took to parts of ATL including the Camelot Projects. The collective went from door to door, talking to residents in an effort to encourage and excite people to vote in this historic and critical election, as well as to get educated about candidates running in state, and local Elections and then hit the polls on November 5.

Later that night, media personalities Angie Martinez and Ray Daniels moderated a Town Hall where most of the celebrity canvassers participated along with Dee-1, Benny The Butcher, Maurice “Moe” Mitchell of Working Families, International President of SEIU April Verrett, Founder and CEO of Onyx Impact Esosa Osa, Woody McCLain from “Power Book II: Ghost”, Isaac Keys, and J. Alphonse Nicholson plays Lil’ Murda in the hit Starz series “P-Valley”.

“We can really decide on what goes on in our own neighborhood,” Benny said about the urgency of voting. “What’s really happening in the fabric of America, we can make an impact and change on that. I’ve got mothers, daughterssisters, cousins, and it’s important… My daughter, she’s 19. I told her, ‘vote. Make sure you vote this year.’ This is her first time being able to vote. ‘Make sure you go do that and exerciseyour right to do that.”

Beanie Sigel who’s been canvassing and participating in town halls since this summer in cities such as Detroit, Chicago and Philadelphia, has been passionate about helping people get informed and to the polls.

“I always say, ‘the closest to the problem, are the closest to the solution,’’ Beanie Sigel told the people at the Town Hall, which took place at Atlanta’s Gathering Spot.

Sigel also reflected on speaking to a gaggle of kids at a neighborhood community hub called PawKids which focuses on enriching the neighborhood youth, health and education.

“I was one of those children,” Beanie added. “I talked with them. I didn’t talk to them. I didn’t talk at them. I talked with those kids. A lot of us talk at each other. But let’s talk with each other. One of my biggest records ,I say ‘Why I’m here? I go through it, so you wouldn’t do it after me.’ If I can’t teach these kids or anybody nothing else, I can teach them what not to do from the mistakes I made in my life. It’s never too late for change. So If I could do it, I encourage all of us to do it.”

“The past few months in particularly, we have turned up our efforts to focus on inner city, communities that often get neglected in mainstream campaigning, and targets sub cultures within the black community to get educated and engaged, registered to vote, and ultimately to vote,” says Marvin Bing. “You see my organization Mobilize Justice working with the AAPI Victory Fund, SEIU, Working Families and so many others. It’s a real concerted unified effort. The hip-hop community is also stepping up to educate everyone and get the neighborhoods involved. The OGs have been building with some of the younger entertainers and they are all sharing ideas, learning from one another and passing on the information to the community. Everyone has also been learning from some of the members of the community as well. The biggest take away is that everyone has a voice and everyone has power with their vote. We will be coming to more cities in these last few days before November 5, in an effort to get everyone involved.”

Blacc Sam Recalls the Day Nipsey Hussle Was Murdered in Interview with Big Boy

Blacc Sam, the brother of Nipsey Hussle, gave an interview with Los Angeles media icon Big Boy for his series Off Air. The interview centered on Hussle and provided details of the day he was murdered.

In the conversation, Blacc Sam revealed what he believes was premeditated murder and certain security lapses at the shop on the tragic day.

“Somebody come to the shop, they know we in the doorway,” Same shared. “When Hussle pull up, we in the doorway. You’re gonna see me with a hoodie on and I got a pistol on me. You’re gonna see one of my team members in the hoodie in the doorway with a pistol. That’s protocol when Hussle pull up. So, it’s Sunday. It’s busy in there.

“Why the nigga in there didn’t follow the protocol? I wasn’t there. Why they didn’t follow it? Maybe they was fucking around, helping a customer who was doing some fucking customer service. This is what I’m thinking, trying to transition into some legitimate, just selling clothes. But nobody was in the doorway.

“From my understanding a boy walked up with no shirt on first to check the scene ‘cus he knows what’s going on in that parking lot,” he said. “He probably seen no one was in the doorway, Hussle had on shorts, checked everybody else, left. They say he came back with a red shirt on. Tip-toed through the alley, went right and started shooting.”

Sam revealed the shooter, Eric Holder, returned to the store in a red shirt, which is odd because they aren’t commonly available in the neighborhood. “That’s a throw off, or the Bloods did it. I felt he was supposed to do a job or somebody sent him, and he was nervous. He was supposed to hit that alley with that red shirt immediately. He didn’t do that.”

Blacc Sam Recalls Struggling To Find Venue For Nipsey Hussle’s Funeral

Nipsey’s funeral was held at the Crypto.com Arena, formerly the Staples Center, in April of that year. According to Blacc Sam, however, finding a venue for the funeral was no easy feat at first. “Honestly, it was God,” he said. “You know, it was Hussle and God because we were just going through it… Obviously, we gotta get this funeral handled the right way, we were trying to hit churches and you know, Black churches, Black preachers. Nope, nope, nope. So, we couldn’t find a venue.”

Eventually, Nipsey’s friend and business partner Karen Civil stepped in and was able to secure the Crypto.com Arena with the help of LeBron James and Roc Nation. “After weeks and weeks of we can’t get a venue … we got the Staples for bro. And so, at that point, it was like, alright man, we gotta make sure we do this the right way for bro,” he added. This resulted in a 25-mile procession, with roughly 20,000 people in attendance to honor the later performer. What do you think of Blacc Sam’s recent interview with Big Boy? Nipsey Hussle’s Kids Own Marathon Clothing Store, Says Blacc Sam

The future of Nipsey Hussle’s brick-and-mortar Marathon Clothing Store has been unclear for some time. After the beloved rapper was gunned down by Eric Holder in front of the Los Angeles retail store in 2019, the location became a hub for visitors. The parking lot of the shopping center had to be shut down, and a gate was erected around it due to the high traffic. People from all over the world stopped by to see when Nipsey was murdered, and the place was covered in memorial candles, cards filled with condolences, stuffed animals, flowers, and more.

Expectedly, Hussle’s Marathon Clothing brand also saw a meteoric spike in sales. However, the storefront would later shut down because it became nearly impossible to operate as a business. Nipsey’s brother, Sam Asghedom, affectionately known as Blacc Sam, offered an update while visiting the Earn Your Leisure podcast. He explained that Hussle’s kids now own Marathon Clothing, and it was generational wealth that Nipsey always intended.

When he passed away, Nip was in a long-term relationship with actress Lauren London. The couple has a son, Kross. Hussle also has a daughter from a previous relationship, Emani, and London shares a son, Kameron, with Lil Wayne. “When I say we own it, it’s in Hussle’s kids’ names,” Blacc Sam explained. “This is something their father worked for and that they own. That’s important to me. Also, just having a brick-and-mortar once again reinforced what Hussle told us and taught us.”

Online sales often outdo storefronts these days, but Sam stressed the importance of passing on that legacy. Having something tangible to pass down to the next generation is valued among the Asghedoms. Further, as the chapter of Eric Holder’s trial and sentencing has concluded, the family looks forward to a brighter future.

Holder Learns His Fate

Last month, after years of litigation, Holder learned his fate. His defense argued that he suffered from mental health issues that contributed to the murder, but a jury still found him guilty. He received a 60-year prison sentence and could effectively spend the rest of his life behind bars. Holder and Nipsey were friends and were even a part of the same neighborhood gang. However, it was speculated that Nipsey said something about Holder being a snitch, prompting the violent altercation. Check out more from Blacc Sam above.

Nipsey Hussle’s Estate Settles Their Lawsuit Against The Crips Over ‘The Marathon Continues’ Trademark

Nearly two years after the battle began, the lawsuit between the estate for the late Nipsey Hussle and The Crips over “The Marathon Continues” trademark has finally come to an end. According to a report from TMZ, the rapper’s brother Samuel “Blacc Sam” Asghedom informed a Los Angeles County court that a settlement was reached between the two parties. Documents obtained by TMZ reveal that while Nipsey’s estate and The Crips are still working on the final details of the lawsuit, the formal terms of the agreement will be submitted in the near future.

The issue began in May 2019 when Blacc Sam filed a request for “The Marathon Continues” trademark, only to find out that The Crips filed one almost two weeks before his attempt. Sam intended to use the slogan for a number of endeavors including “charitable activities, the doing of good deeds for others and the promotion of ethical and character values.”

More than a year later, Hussle’s estate would file a lawsuit against the corporate section of the gang over the trademark. Through it they sought compensation for damages and an order for The Crips to destroy and remove any merchandise that was made with the trademark.

Nipsey Hussle is a Warner Music artist. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.
