Eminem Makes History With Impressive Billboard 200 Milestone

It’s been a busy few months for Eminem. In July, the hitmaker unleashed his twelfth studio album, The Death Of Slim Shady. The concept album was mostly well-received by listeners, and he has even more on the way. Earlier this week, he dropped a trailer for the deluxe edition of the project, labeled the Expanded Mourner’s Edition.

It’s expected to include various bonus tracks, and one of them is rumored to feature production by The Alchemist, who appeared in the teaser. Eminem’s new and upcoming work isn’t the only material gaining recognition these days, however. According to Billboard, he’s celebrating yet another exciting milestone.

Curtain Call: The Hits Spends 700th Week On Billboard 200

The outlet reports that his 2005 best-of compilation, Curtain Call: The Hits, has spent over 700 weeks on the Billboard 200. He hit the 700 mark last week, moving roughly 8,000 album equivalent units. The album is only the sixth in history to do so, and the first rap album ever. Pink Floyd, Bob Marley, Journey, Metallica, and Creedence Clearwater Revival have reached the milestone in the past.

HipHopDX attributes the compilation’s success to a loophole, as Billboard‘s rules state that a song appearing on more than one album has to be assigned to one. This is determined by whichever album sells the most that week. Since the compilation contains several of Em’s early hits, they’re often attributed to it, adding to its overall tally. What do you think of Eminem becoming the first rapper whose album has spent 700 weeks or more on the Billboard 200? Are you surprised by this or not? Are you looking forward to hearing the Expanded Mourner’s Edition of his new album The Death Of Slim Shady when it drops this Friday? Share your thoughts in the comments section down below and keep an eye on HNHH for more updates.

Travis Scott Projected To Land No. 1 Debut On Billboard 200 With ‘Days Before Rodeo’ Project

Screenshot 2024 09 03 at 12.00.23 PM

Several news outlets have confirmed That Travis Scott’s highly anticipated Days Before Rodeo mixtape is slated to take the No. 1 spot on Billboard 200, beating out Sabrina Carpenter’s Short N’ Sweet  album for the pole position.

New media reports have Scott’s project sales projected to be 365,000 in the first week while Carpenter’s album is counted at around 354,000.

Neither side knows how this will end even with Travis in the lead, with both artists having heavily pushed deluxe versions, physical copies and extra tracks in order to secure that number 1 spot.

Check out the numbers HERE

Critics, such as rapper turned podcaster Joe Budden, believe that the numbers of Scott’s Days Before Rodeo have been embellished. “Numbers all across the board everywhere else are down,” he said on his podcast. “What YG do, 8,000? Everybody else is between 20 and 30,000. They’re saying that Travis Scott is one of the first examples of the latest trend in music where the artists are signing directly to tech companies. The tech companies are offering different packages. I don’t believe those numbers for a second.”

The Race Between Sabrina Carpenter And Travis Scott For This Week’s No. 1 Album Was So, So Close

There was a bit of drama with the slate of new album releases from August 23. Sabrina Carpenter dropped her album Short N’ Sweet the same day Travis Scott re-released his mixtape Days Before Rodeo, and it looked like Carpenter had Scott’s feud with Nicki Minaj on the brain.

It turns out both projects had just about an equal chance to top the latest Billboard 200 chart (dated September 7), and the race was incredibly close. Now, we know who won: Billboard announced today (September 3) that Short N’ Sweet is No. 1.

It claimed the title thanks to 362,000 equivalent album units in the US during the week ending August 29. Days Before Rodeo was very, very close behind with “a little over 361,000” units. So, there was a difference of about a thousand, or less than 1 percent, between the two projects’ unit numbers.

Short N’ Sweet is Carpenter’s first No. 1 album, beating her previous best performer Emails I Can’t Send, which peaked at No. 23. This follows “Please Please Please” becoming Carpenter’s first No. 1 single on the Hot 100.

In other Carpenter news, she killed (and kissed) Jenna Ortego in her “Taste” video, was all over Jimmy Fallon’s The Tonight Show, and had maybe her best “Nonsense” outro yet on Chicken Shop Date.

Post Malone’s New Country Album Predicted To Top Billboard Charts

Post Malone is the latest rapper to roll the dice on a different genre. The artist who broke out with smash singles like “rockstar” and “congratulations” has gone full country. No trap drums or 21 Savage features in sight. And it worked. F1-Trillion, Malone’s latest offering, has proven to be a smash out the gate. Chart Data ran the numbers on the album on August 19, and predicted that F1-Trillion will top the Billboard 200 with sales landing between 200-225K units first week.

If true, Post Malone will have completed one of the most successful genre pivots in recent memory. Fans have seen people like MGK drop successful albums in other genres, but Malone is in a different league in terms of album sales. He’s one of the best-selling artists of all time, and he currently holds the record for most Diamond-certified songs in Billboard history. F1-Trillion will actually signify a big comeback for Post Malone. The artist hasn’t had a chart-topping album since 2019, despite putting out albums in 2022 and 2023. The genre pivot looked like a smart commercial move, even if its led to lots of criticism from fans.

Post Malone Hasn’t Topped The Billboard 200 Since 2019

Post Malone has long been criticized for his role within hip-hop. He’s downplayed the genre’s depth with regards to songwriting, and instead championed genres like rock and country. He’s also been labeled a culture vulture from the moment he blew up. Post Malone addressed these criticisms as far back as his 2015 appearance on The Breakfast Club. “I’m not scared [to be labeled a culture vulture] because I’m not trying to be anything I’m not,” he explained. “I like what I like and I don’t think I’m biting off a certain culture of copying a certain culture… I like what I like.” The irony, now, is that Malone is getting backlash from country artists who have the same complaint.

Post Malone recently sat down for an interview on CBS This Morning. He admitted that the criticisms did get to him. “It sucked. I was a kid,” he conceded. “It’s hard not to [take it personal].” The artist claimed to take up drinking as a means of coping. His solution more recently has been to focus on his fans instead of his critics. “It’s not for the people who hate you,” Post Malone asserted. “It’s for the people who love you and yourself.”

Kanye West And Ty Dolla Sign’s “Vultures 2” Suffers Steep Sales Fall Off In Week 2

Kanye West and Ty Dolla Sign’s new album, Vultures 2, is looking at a major drop-off in its second week on the Billboard 200 chart. After debuting at number two and moving 107,000 album-equivalent units, DJ Akademiks reports that the project is only on pace to sell 31,000 units this time around.

In response to the news, fans have been sharing plenty of jokes on social media. “Give us drakes 3 track ep sale numbers,” one user on X (formerly Twitter) wrote. Another joked: “Now Kanye is competing with Latto.” One former fan wrote: “I never imagined Kanye would ever be selling this poorly. As a huge Kanye fan, I don’t even listen to him anymore. The last album I listened to was Jesus Is King.”

Despite only debuting at No. 2, Ty Dolla Sign mistakenly remarked that the project topped the Billboard 200 chart during a recent concert. “Number one motherf*cking album, man,” he told the crowd before performing the track, “Promotion.” In actuality, Taylor Swift beat out the duo with her latest project, The Tortured Poets Department. It was that album’s 14th week atop the chart.

“Vultures 2” Looking At A Disappointing Second Week

In addition to falling sales, Vultures 2 has also been battling brutal reviews from critics. On Metacritic, the album is maintaining a score of just 40, positioning it as one of the worst hip-hop albums of the decade. A primary concern of reviewers was West releasing the project in an unfinished state. He’s since made several adjustments that fans have been appreciating. Ty Dolla Sign Mistakenly Thought “Vultures 2” Topped The Charts Leading To Jokes From Fans

Ty Dolla Sign mistakenly remarked that his collaborative album with Kanye West, Vultures 2, went No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart during a recent concert. “Number one motherf*cking album, man,” he told the crowd before performing the track, “Promotion.” Despite the comments, Vultures 2 actually landed at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 behind Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department. It was that project’s 14th week atop the album chart.

Expectedly, fans on social media trolled Ty in response to the slip-up. “Old head saw himself #1 on Apple Music and thought it was billboard,” one user wrote on X (formerly Twitter). Another joked: “I mean we can all pretend Taylor Swift never existed and I’m good with that.” One more user wrote: “TY so funny man he be having no idea at all.”

After selling 107,000 equivalent units in its first week, Vultures 2 failed to overtake The Tortured Poets Department, resulting in the end of Kanye West‘s streak of 11 consecutive number-one albums. That record previously held on by a technicality when Ye’s collaborative album with Kid Cudi, Kids See Ghosts, failed to top the chart but was released under their separate name as a duo. West and Ty brought along several top artists to help them with Vultures 2, including Playboi Carti, Don Toliver, Kodak Black, Future, Lil Wayne, and many more. The charts aren’t the only place the project has struggled, however. Reviewers have also been highly critical of the project, as it wasn’t released in a finished state.

Kanye West’s “VULTURES 2” To Debut At Number Two On Billboard Charts

We’re hoping VULTURES 2 is the wildest album rollout of 2024. We can’t imagine an album being more scattered and confusing than this, much less conceive of an artist who could get away with it. The album has been a talking point for all the wrong reasons, between streaming removals, sample clearances, and the rumor that Kanye West used AI to complete his verses. All that said, VULTURES 2 has sold decently well. Chart Data has dropped the first week numbers for the anticipated sequel, and it’s set to do better than expected.

The outlet reports that Kanye West and Ty Dolla’s Sign’s joint album will sell 83K units in its first week. That’s good enough for a number two spot on the Billboard 200. In a separate tweet, Chart Data noted that the number two debut will end Kanye West’s streak of having albums top the charts. To make things even worse, Taylor Swift will be the artist who ends it. Swift will continue to hold down the top spot with her most recent album, The Tortured Poets Departments. As we previously noted, Swift put out four new versions of the album on August 8. Innocuous enough on the surface, but fans were quick to point out the fact that West dropped four versions of VULTURES 2 the same day.

Kanye West Sold Under 100K First Week For The First Time

Fans will never know for sure whether Swift was trolling Kanye West with her rollout. That being said, the VULTURES sequel would have struggled regardless. Ye’s album sales have been steadily declining in the last few years. Jesus Is King and DONDA sold 264K and 309K first week, respectively. VULTURES was a significant downturn with only 148K units sold. VULTURES 2 is the first time Kanye West’s career that he has failed to sell at least 100K in the first week. That said, album sales appear to be the least of the star’s worries these days.

Kanye West took to social media on August 8 to blast Atlantic Records over their business tactics. He said that the label was threatening to take both VULTURES albums down from all streaming platforms. “40% of all revenue from V1 and V2 needs to be paid to Atlantic,” the rapper claimed. “If we don’t handle immediately Atlantic will issue take downs for both albums.” West then likened himself to an indie artist, and continued to release new music throughout the day. “This is what ‘they’ do to independent artists,” he added on his IG Story. We will have to wait and see where the VULTURES 2 story goes next.

Eminem Officially Gets His 11th No. 1 Album With “The Death Of Slim Shady”

Eminem’s new album The Death Of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce) had a killer first week when it comes to sales, amassing 281K album-equivalent units without counting physical sales. Now, it officially manifested into his 11th career No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 albums chart, breaking Taylor Swift’s dominant 2024 record for 12 consecutive chart-topping weeks with The Tortured Poets Department. Moreover, this is the largest debut for any hip-hop album this year so far. Also, the Detroit MC now ties with Bruce Springsteen, Barbra Streisand, and Kanye West for the fifth-most number ones on the Billboard 200 chart.

For those curious, that list has Drake (13 No. 1 albums), Jay-Z and Taylor Swift (both with 14), and The Beatles (19) ahead of Eminem and company. Nevertheless, this is a huge achievement for him, even if the album’s critical reception has been less than stellar. However, comparison might be the thief of joy, but in this case, folks are generally much more receptive to this body of work than they were to Em’s other post-2000s releases. But whether you’re a fan or a hater, you can’t deny that there’s so much to appreciate and dissect when it comes to The Death Of Slim Shady.

Eminem’s The Death Of Slim Shady: Listen

In addition to this album success, Eminem continues to keep a firm grip on commercial dominance within the rap game, at least in a few different metrics. One of those is the goalpost of Spotify monthly listeners, which he sits firmly at the top of with around 86 million at press time. Kendrick Lamar is not far behind as the second rapper on this list with 75 million at press time, ironically surpassing Drake recently. Alas, not even their beef can dethrone Marshall Mathers.

Meanwhile, referring back to the depth and content within The Death Of Slim Shady, fans are still finding new details and interpretations to analyze and discuss. A popular recent theory is that Eminem actually intended to structure this album in reverse, as playing the tracks from last to first apparently reveals another perspective and concept. This isn’t the first time that viewpoints like these caused fan debate. But they rarely do, and engaging so many fans beyond a surface level listen is a feat far beyond a No. 1 debut.

Don Toliver Scores Highest Chart Debut Of His Career With New Album

Don Toliver has worked to get where he is. The Houston artist broke through in a big way on Travis Scott’s 2018 album Astroworld, and since then, he’s continued to refine his sound. Toliver has gotten better and better, and his commercial success has followed suit. He scored his first top ten hit in 2020, and his last two albums have debuted within the top 10 of the Billboard 200. His new album, Hardstone Psycho, is garnering stellar reviews from critics. Furthermore, it’s already proven to be the artist’s most successful release yet.

Hardstone Psycho debuted at number three on the Billboard 200. Technically, this is a spot lower than his second album, Life of a Don. The album sales are second to none, however. Hardstone Psycho sold 77K copies in its first week. This makes it the best-selling debut of any Don Toliver album to date. For a point of comparison, Life of a Don sold 68K first week. Love Sick, his third album, sold only 40K during its first week. Don Toliver is inching closer and closer to superstardom. It may seem like a long process, but the artist is in it for the long haul.

Don Toliver’s Hardstone Psycho Is His Boldest Album Yet

Don Toliver talked about his musical journey during a 2023 GQ profile. He credited his eclectic taste to his parents, and admitted that he was initially pigeonholed by comparisons to other artists. “People say I sound like Akon, or like T-Pain,” he recalled. “But I feel like I sound like myself.” The artist went on explain how a gradual increase in popularity has actually given him time to make mistakes and hone his musical craft. Now, he’s more confident than ever. “I know how to do everything,” Toliver boasted. “I can literally hear any beat and know how I should sound, or somebody else should sound.”

Hardstone Psycho is a testament to this confidence. The album sees Don Toliver try out sounds as varied as sample-heavy hip-hop, dance-centric party songs, and rock-laced anthems. The artist wants to break down genre frameworks because the icons he idolizes did the same thing. “I want people to listen to my music and think it’s timeless,” he told GQ in 2022. “To think about Marvin Gaye, Sade, Jay-Z, and just listen again. All I strive for is to be in the conversation with some of the greatest of all time.” He’s clearly on his way.

Frank Ocean’s “Blonde” Cracks The Top 40 For The First Time Since 2016
