Don’t Forget About Latto

2024 has been an embarrassment of riches for rap fans. Breakout projects like Doechii’s Alligator Bites Never Heal, solid career evolutions such as Megan Thee Stallion’s Megan, and assertive declarations of conflict like Kendrick Lamar’s GNX have had seismic effects on the landscape of hip-hop this year, upending a decade of status quo and shaking up the outlook for the future of rap.

Amid all that, though, it feels like some stuff got lost in the shuffle; namely, Atlanta superstar Latto, whose third studio album Sugar Honey Iced Tea was not only her best, but did what each of the above-mentioned releases did — all in one sturdy collection of 17 versatile tracks. Fortunately, Latto’s tour for the project brought a welcome reminder of all that she’s capable of and just how big of an impact she’s had herself lately.

Firstly, it’s impossible to start anywhere but on Latto’s importance for the girlies. Women in rap have often expressed their feeling of being outsiders in the genre, calling it a “male dominated” culture in which women are not just a minority, but are boxed into just one or two archetypes. Newer rappers like Cardi B, Doja Cat, and Megan Thee Stallion have done a bunch of needed work to carve out space for women in rap, but in the past eight years of going to their shows, never have I ever felt quite so outnumbered by women as at YouTube Theater on Sunday night (December 1), seemingly all of them decked out in Latto’s signature leopard print.

No exaggeration, the ratio had to be 20 women to every one dude. They even commandeered the men’s restrooms; I’ve seen this happen before but never to the point that there’s a line for both. Sure, women rappers have created women-friendly spaces on their tours, but Latto’s crowd took this to even greater heights than any of her peers — which makes sense, because at heart, she’s a girl’s-girl, sharing her platform with openers in Karrahbooo and Mariah The Scientist who have been unfairly perceived in relation to their relationships with men. Flo Milli also popped out for a surprise performance of her hit, “Never Lose Me” during Latto’s sole wardrobe change (from the aforementioned animal print to baggy pants and crop top Crenshaw sweater. Long live Nipsey Hussle).

And while her main conflict with another woman spawned from a complaint about her genre classification, the setlist for the Sugar Honey Iced Tea Tour pointedly leaves out Latto’s biggest pop hit, “Big Energy.” Instead, the Georgia peach focused intently on her latest album and the more hardcore hits from her previous projects, emphasizing her rap credentials. This turned out to be a wise move, as some of the biggest crowd pops came for trap anthems like the breakdown on “Big Mama,” “B*tch From The Souf,” “Chicken Grease,” “Muwop,” and 2024 singles “Put It On Da Floor,” “Sunday Service,” and “Brokey.”

As much fuss as rap fans made over Doechii’s raps on songs like “Boom Bap” and “Nissan Altima,” Latto’s latest proved she could get equally introspective on “Georgia Peach,” which opened the show, and “S/O To Me,” to which fans may have attributed some Drake influence, but is all Latto’s story and pen. Speaking of Drake, his verses were clipped from just about every song he would have appeared on — even during the warmup DJ set — but hey, at the time Latto was plotting out the tour, including him was a good business move. It wasn’t until hometown hero Kendrick Lamar lyrically dismantled him and brought out his inner Karen that former collaborators started turning on him.

But for all the attention heaped onto the phenomenon that was “Not Like Us,” in a just world, Latto would have received just as much for “Put It On Da Floor” and “Sunday Service,” — which, if you’ll remember, actually kicked off much of the combative energy of 2024 alongside Megan Thee Stallion’s “Hiss.” Latto may not have whacked her rival quite as directly, but the fact that her bellicose invitations to step into the arena both reached the Hot 100 (the latter at No. 100, while the former peaked at No. 13) shows she’s got just as much of a knack for making battle rap club friendly as the Compton native.

If Sugar Honey Iced Tea is a reminder to the world that Latto is not to be overlooked, then the tour is a welcome reminder of the reminder. Latto has spent years proving her rap cred, then spent much of the past year proving her pop potential. But while many of her predecessors and peers might have been happy to take the bag and coast, Latto went back to the lab to double down on demonstrating her rap roots — and polishing her stage show, which has somehow massively improved since the last time I saw her live at The Novo while working on our cover story on her. She belongs in the conversation about the best rappers out today, and she’s making sure you never forget it.

Ashanti Fan Proclaims “Big D**k Energy” At Show & Sends Her Into Hysterics: Watch

Ashanti is an incredibly talented performer, so much so that she’s already done almost all she can do. Instead of keeping that up exclusively, now she wants to bring her fans into the equation. Moreover, during a recent concert, the singer brought up some guys onstage, presumably for a lap dance routine from dancers as one of them was sitting down. While speaking to one fan, who proclaimed that he’s “representing for big d**k energy,” she couldn’t contain her laughter amid raucous cheers from the crowd and other performers alike. Just goes to show that a little confidence goes a long way.

Furthermore, it’s actually quite wholesome to see Ashanti have some fun with this part of her show as she builds a nurturing relationship with longtime on-and-off-again partner, Nelly. Not everyone is a fan of their relationship, but that’s a pretty small- albeit vocal- minority amid a lot of people that are happy they’re back together. They are living large with surprise birthday parties, brand new cars, and some truly adorable viral moments. But that hasn’t stopped either of them from having some fun on their own, which is a heartening balance to witness.

Ashanti Laughs At Eager Fan’s Confidence: Watch

Not only that, but she’s been able to share this fun with other artists, of which the most notable recent example was Usher. Ashanti hit up his Las Vegas residency and wished him a happy birthday, a favor he was happy to return to her via a joint singing performance. The two R&B stars’ birthdays were only one day apart, and it coincided with a massive stage for them to show love to one another. We can’t think of a better way to acknowledge and celebrate this connection… and to hear people sing “Happy Birthday” competently, for once.

Meanwhile, Nelly and his boo use everything they can to show each other love, even explicit lyrics from Sexyy Red. As such, it’s no surprise that she took so kindly and joyfully to a fan’s “big d**k energy.” Do you think the “Hot In Herre” MC reciprocates that in the same way? Let us know what your take is in the comments and stay up to date on HNHH for more news and the latest updates on Ashanti.

Saucy Santana Brings Big Energy To The Club After Storming Out During Erica Mena’s Arrest: Video

Prior to social media, celebrities had a lot more freedom. Now, anyone in the spotlight is constantly subject to being photographed or recorded, and potentially exposed on social media. It’s made infidelity far more difficult and has certainly added plenty of stress to nights out at the club. Saucy Santana experienced an uncomfortable situation this past weekend. He went out with his boyfriend, ZellSwag, as well as Bambi Benson and Erica Mena of Love & Hip-Hop fame. According to the “Booty” rapper’s retelling of events, the latter of the two reality starlets got far too drunk. She eventually began tussling with security attempting to calm her down.

Rather than stick around to witness the situation, the 29-year-old quickly fled the scene of the crime – as caught in a hilarious video circulating online. “I got the f**k out of dodge ‘cuz I don’t play that,” Santana told his followers on IG. His Friday (August 25) night shenanigans may have ended early. Still, that didn’t stop the Connecticut-born performer from heading out and bringing big energy to another venue later on in his weekend.

Saucy Santana Had One Wild AF Weekend

In a video that appears to have been taken on Saturday, Santana dances and smiles while entering a nightclub to celebrate someone’s birthday. The bottle girls surrounding the RCA Records artist were grinning ear to ear as he hyped them up. Clearly, the dancer was in a far better mood than he was when Mena, Benson, and his man began getting physical with security on their evening out.

Outside of all the drama with his boyfriend and the women of Love & Hip-Hop, Saucy Santana is also in the news today for supporting an up-and-coming artist. Blueface’s first baby mama, Jaidyn Alexis, caught the XXL Freshman’s attention with her latest single. Read more about that at the link below, and check back later for more hip-hop/pop culture news updates.

Latto’s ‘Big Energy’ Was Originally Written For Cardi B

Latto’s “Genius Of Love”-sampling 2021 single “Big Energy” has been her biggest hit to date. As it turns out, though, the song almost went to another artist, Cardi B. However, according to songwriter Theron Thomas, when the opportunity to put it into Latto’s capable hands arose, the original plans for the song changed quickly.

As a guest on the podcast See, The Thing Is… Thomas recounted how “Big Energy” wound up delivering a smash for Latto instead of Cardi B, its intended recipient. “We went to Hawaii, I wrote it to that beat, and met Latto, and she was like, ‘Yeah man, you know, I want to do some crossover sh*t,’” he recalled.

“When I meet an artist and they tell me they want to do something, it’s like, okay cool. Cardi never got to hear it. We didn’t get it to her.”

After premiering the song at the 2021 MTV Video Music Awards, Latto officially released it in September 2021. As it rose on the Billboard charts over the next six months, she was able to tap Mariah Carey, whose 1995 hit “Fantasy” also sampled “Genius Of Love” by Tom Tom Club, to appear on the remix. The song peaked at No. 3 on the Hot 100 and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Melodic Rap Performance.

It was also the basis of Latto’s feud with Nicki Minaj after Nicki argued that “Big Energy” should be nominated for a pop award instead. Nicki’s own song, “Super Freaky Girl,” was shortlisted as a pop song, and she compared the two songs on Twitter. Latto responded, “Damn I can’t win for losing… all these awards/noms I can’t even celebrate,” leading to open hostilities between the two rappers that apparently even continued into a new song Latto debuted at Coachella. Just imagine if the song had gone to Cardi; that feud might have been even worse than it is already.

Latto Poses With Miley Cyrus For NYE, Jokes About Tripping During Live Performance

Bringing in 2023 with a bang, Latto performed her hit song “Big Energy” on “Miley’s New Year’s Eve Party” earlier this week. Televised live on NBC, the rapper accidentally tripped onstage during her performance before quickly recovering in front of the crowd.

Sharing a photo with Cyrus at the event, the 24-year-old rapper poked fun at the mishap by posting the clip along with other behind-the-scenes footage of the performance.

“Kicked off 2023 w THEE @mileycyrus but at the same time I also tripped on live TV,” Latto penned on Instagram after the special, playfully adding, “so Idk what the universe tryna tell me about this year.”

Hitting the stage in an emerald green bodysuit with jewels and cutouts, the “It’s Givin rapper also wore her hair tied back into a double-braided ponytail. Offering support for her brief slip-up, a few celebrities entered Latto’s comments to help uplift her.

“Handled it with grace! Could barely notice. Definition of a star,” singer Chloe Bailey wrote under the post.

In a sit-down with Flaunt Magazine last fall, she revealed about her typical day-to-day, “Like right now, boom I’m in LA, so I’m waking up doing some type of shoot. I’ll probably wake up: for me, early is 11 AM. That’s early baby, that’s early. So I’ll try to wake up a little bit before then, hit the treadmill, do a light workout, and go to the shoot. By the end of the shoot, like last night I left set at midnight.”

“So I be trying to go home, lay with my man for a little bit. Dang! Taking all my time [laughs]. I try to have a little bit of me time before I go to sleep and have to wake up early and work,” Latto continued.

Latto Brought ‘Big Energy’ In A Velvet Bodysuit To ‘Miley’s New Year’s Eve Party’

Latto has been riding “Big Energy,” her 777 single that peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, since its late-2021 release.

As Uproxx’s December 2021 cover star, Latto explained how she discovered she had unknowingly sampled Tom Tom Club’s “Genius Of Love” and, by extension, Mariah Carey’s “Fantasy.” She said, “I was like, ‘You know what? I ain’t even going to put that pressure on myself. I’m going to put my own taste on it, take it or leave it, whatever.’”

Nobody was thinking about Carey or Tom Tom Club when Latto took the stage in a velvet bodysuit and brought “Big Energy” to Miley’s New Year’s Eve Party in Miami, airing live on NBC and streaming on Peacock, on Saturday night, December 31.

It marked Latto’s last performance of 2022. She was busy through the back half of the year while serving as the opener on Lizzo’s Special Tour, a role she will continue to hold for the 2023 Special 2our leg.

Miley’s New Year’s Eve Party was co-hosted by Miley Cyrus and Dolly Parton. They delivered a flawless medley of “Wrecking Ball” and “I Will Always Love You,” while other musical guests included David Byrne, Fletcher, Paris Hilton, Rae Sremmurd, Sia, and more. The two-hour special also revealed that Cyrus will drop her new single, “Flowers” on January 13, which happens to be Liam Hemsworth’s birthday.

Latto Gets The Key To Her Hometown Of Clayton County

2022 proved to be quite the breakthrough year for Latto, as she continued to drop plenty of music and appear on the charts.

To cap off the successful year, she’s now receiving the key to her city.

Former Georgia State Representative, Stacey Abrams presented Latto with the key to Clayton County, Georgia on Sunday (December 18).

The announcement took place following her second annual holiday drive; the “Christmas in Clayco” event. Run by her non-profit organization, Win Some Give Some, the operation evidently shows the 23-year-old’s dedication to providing for her community.

The rapper’s donations this year featured a Christmas dinner, gifts and necessities for over 500 local families, including TVs, bikes, toy cars and turkeys.

“Our kids love her, the commissioners love her, and this is a collaboration that has been great for the community and for the children in Clayton County Public Schools. I want them to see the spirit of giving. When you give, it reciprocates back to you. What we tell our kids in Clayton County is that you can go and be anything you want to be, and Latto is a great example of that,” Clayton County commissioner Alieka Anderson said while attending the event.

Furthermore, the December 18th date is now officially recognized as “Latto Day” within the city.

In other news surrounding the “It’s Givin” rapper, she recently celebrated her upcoming 24th birthday in a unique way. Although she doesn’t officially turn 24 until Thursday (December 22), the Columbus native celebrated yesterday (December 19) by way of a party she called “Area 24.”

While dressing up as a fully-costumed pink alien, it appears as though the festivities were certainly a good time.

Back in March, the Grammy-nominated rapper dropped off her second studio album, 777. The 23-year-old is in her bag throughout the project’s 13 tracks. Featuring the biggest hit of her career in “Big Energy,” it’s one of the most successful albums of the year.

Latto’s “Big Energy” Reaches No. 3 On Billboard’s Hot 100

maxresdefault 1 1

Latto’s “Big Energy” continues to climb up the Billboard charts as the track now sits at No.3 on the Billboards.

This is Latto’s first Hot 100 top 10, as “Big Energy” climbed eight spots from 11-3. She took it to Twitter to express enormous gratitude for the success of her record.

“Big Energy” dropped in 2021 and debuted at No.15 on the Billboards, but on Mar. 27, when she dropped the remix with Mariah Carey and Dj Khaled, the energy got bigger for the Clayton County native.

The song also jumped 5-2 on Digital Song Sales (12,900, up 146%) and 7-6 on Radio Songs (52.7 million, up 8%) and debuts at No. 14 on Streaming Songs (9.5 million, up 36%), as it triples up with the Hot 100’s top Airplay, Sales and Streaming Gainer awards.

This success of Latto’s “Big Energy” is currently on a historic pace. It’s the first song to sweep all three honors in a single week since Adele’s “Easy on Me,” following its first full week of tracking, atop the Oct. 30, 2021, chart.) It’s also the first female rap song to enter the Billboard top 5 since “Up” by Cardi B.

The Georgia female hot spitter was elated and tweeted with”Big Energy.”

This accomplishment is just a milestone for Latto. She’s happy with being at No.3, but she’s far from satisfied. As celebratory as she was, she didn’t lose sight of the bigger picture, and she urged her fan base to keep supporting her as she pushed for No.1.

“Big Energy” is the lead single from the release of her second LP, 777. The project dropped on Mar. 25 and features 21 Savage, Lil Durk, Nardo Wick, Kodak Black, Lil Wayne, and Childish Gambino.

Wayne and Gambino are featured on Latto’s “Sunshine,” also charted on Billboard’s Bubbling Under chart at No. 25.

Latto Shared The Best Part About Meeting Mariah Carey For The ‘Big Energy’ Remix: ‘She Was So Genuine’

It’s Latto’s world, we’re just living in it. What could make a hyperbolic statement like that more true than working with a legend like Mariah Carey? Ever since she released “Big Energy,” Latto has had a kind of energy behind her that far outpaces her popularity with the hip-hop crowd — this is a bonafide R&B/pop hit. So it only makes sense that after a few weeks of teasing the “Big Energy” remix feature, it’d turn out to be none other than Mimi herself.

Since Latto’s fans are just as thrilled about her working with an icon as she is, a mini Q&A about the process erupted on Twitter last night when the song was released at midnight. Sure, plenty of people were still focused on Will Smith’s altercation with Chris Rock at the Oscars, but Latto had fans had their priorities right: Asking the Atlanta rapper what the best part of working with Mimi herself was.

The best part? Latto’s all caps response: “HEARING HER HIT THAT HIGH NOTE IN PERSON!!!!”

As far as how the session went down, and what it was like meeting Mariah, Latto said she eventually got over her nerves because Mariah was “so genuine.” “I was sooooo nervous I was like what I say y’all lol but the conversation just floweddd she was so genuine and I definitely was overthinking,” the rapper wrote on Twitter. “We was sipping on her liquor Black Irish & just kicking it fr.”

Latto’s ‘Big Energy’ Remix With Mariah Carey And DJ Khaled Brings Mariah’s ‘Fantasy’ Into The Mix

Since Latto released her hit single, “Big Energy,” she’s been steadily climbing the Billboard charts, and the song helped anchor her second album, 777, which officially dropped on Friday. And along with the album release, Latto has been teasing an updated remix to “Big Energy,” and with the promo around teasing the upcoming feature, Latto almost got sucked into drama between Nicki Minaj and Cardi B, but she skillfully sidestepped by letting everyone know she unequivocally supports both women.

Instead, she finally let fans know for sure on Friday that it was none other than Mariah Carey who had been tapped for the new version of the song, which just dropped and you can hear it above. The very prominent sample on this track is taken from Tom Tom Club’s 1981 single, “Genius Of Love,” and the sample was made incredibly popular by Mariah’s own hit, “Fantasy.” So it’s also not surprising that the “Big Energy” remix, which also features DJ Khaled, is the most logical interpolation of both hits. Mariah contributes lots of whistle notes to the intro of the song, while Latto raps her initial verse, and then Mariah launches into the first verse of “Fantasy.”

It’s kind of like the best of both worlds when it comes to the two hits, and probably destined for some chart success of its own.
