Drake Didn’t Win Any BET Awards Despite Having The Most Nominations This Year

Drake is still at the top of the hip-hop game, and despite having the most nominations at the 2024 BET Awards with seven nods, the fact that he didn’t win any of them isn’t really a strong indicator of any waning success or all that important at the end of the day. Well, that would be the case if rap fans didn’t have a clear example to clown him over when it comes to this year’s awards concerning his big beef. Kendrick Lamar beat Drizzy in the Best Male Hip-Hop Artist category, an outcome that many folks online seem to agree with.

Regardless of what you think of the battle and who won it, it’s pretty wild that the Toronto superstar dropped two projects over the last year and lost to someone with… what, five or six songs including features? Nevertheless, Drake fans can rest easy. Award shows aren’t the end of the world, and this is just a result of this rap beef taking over every other pop culture narrative (the 6ix God didn’t lose his awards because of the battle; just because other nominees got more pull this time around). We’ll see whether his new collabs with Camila Cabello go the distance next year.

Also, we doubt that Drake cares at all about this. In fact, he’s probably feeling very giddy and vindicated right now because, as he lost his nominations at the 2024 BET Awards, one of his big rivals right now learned a lesson about playing with him in his country. For those unaware, a group of OVO die-hards recently attacked Rick Ross and his crew for attempting to play Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” at a Vancouver, Canada festival. Everyone involved in this heated feud has trolled a whole lot during it, but these folks learn time and time again that online and on sight are two very different dynamics.

Meanwhile, Drake is still pretty mad about the beef. He’s embracing many of Kendrick’s disses against him online, claiming Spotify validated fake streams for “Not Like Us,” and there are rumors that he might drop another diss track when that West Coast banger’s video drops. The tides are shifting, the game is figuring itself out, but we doubt that some BET Awards losses will be the end of the story. You can never count The Boy out, even during arguably his lowest point in public discource.

Normani Reveals Devastating Reason She Canceled BET Awards Performance

Normani says she’s “frustrated and disappointed” about missing the BET Awards but had to cancel after injuring herself at rehearsals for her highly-anticipated performance at the ceremony on Sunday. She discussed her decision not to take the stage in a statement on her Instagram Story.

“I am more frustrated and disappointed than anyone believe me,” she began. “I wanted to get on here and give you guys an update letting you know that while in rehearsals for BET I had a really bad accident and injured myself. I am normally good for powering through under any circumstance but unfortunately due to my doctor’s orders, I am just not able to make this performance happen. I desperately wanted to give you my best on that stage but performing would delay my healing. I have been going through my process and doing my best to make sense of my feelings regarding this. I am devastated and hate feeling like a disappointment to you but I have to focus on recovering at this time.”

Nicki Minaj Scares The Barbz With Hiatus Rumors After Winning BET’s Best Female Rap Artist Award

Nicki Minaj is still on top, as she won the Best Female Hip-Hop Artist award at the 2024 BET Awards last night (Sunday, June 30) in Los Angeles. However, a recent social media spat has some Barbz thinking that she might go on another hiatus soon thanks to her reply to a fan’s comment about the Deb Antney situation. For those unaware, Roman’s former manager reached out to Lil Kim to see if she and Nicki could squash their beef. The Trinidadian MC was not happy at all with Antney allegedly going behind her back to set this up, and lamented that she’s not letting her grow on her own.

“Nicki please we don’t need another hiatus,” a fan commented wrote to Nicki Minaj under an Instagram post, and her response is what sent fans into a frenzy. “well thank lil Debbie!!!!” she replied. “Deb refuse to let me grow up. She think I’m a kid, HER kid at that! I’m grown!” The allegedly conflicted Ice Spice collaborator had blasted Antney in a lengthy Twitter rant, so we wouldn’t be surprised if there’s more in the tuck.

Angela Simmons made quite the fashion statement at the 2024 BET Awards in Los Angeles last night (Sunday, June 30), brandishing a bedazzled purse shaped like a gun in the cameras’ faces. A lot of folks on social media, like you’ll see in the comments sections of the Instagram posts below, labeled this as a pretty cringe showing, or at the very least a bizarre one. Moreover, Yo Gotti’s boo recently took to the Internet to explain her decision and respond to a lot of folks hating on her for this move. From what she said in the clip below, she just really liked the design and didn’t want to promote that sort of lifestyle.

“So I see a lot of conversation around the bag, the purse I wore to the awards,” Angela Simmons’ message began. “And normally I don’t address, like, rumors and stuff. But I’m not like that, never been like that. I’m super -– like, I’m not violent. I’ve obviously been through a lot in my personal life when it comes to gun violence and it’s very personal to me.

“But I just liked the bag and I thought it was cool and I thought it was a fashion moment and that was it,” Angela Simmons continued. “I didn’t have any intentions of ruffling anyone’s feathers. It seems like everyone -– or a couple of people, I’lll say -– are a little upset. But I don’t mean no harm. [I’m] super, super peaceful, and… Yeah. I’m sorry if it bothered anyone, but that’s not me, that’s just not how I am.” While a lot of her content online can lean more in a thirst trap direction, it’s clear that she wanted to leave that to the side and focus on this current issue.

Meanwhile, Angela Simmons and Yo Gotti will continue to represent hip-hop at its own spaces and beyond. For example, they and E-40 hit up a White House party last year in lavish fashion, living it up with the big wigs and making their mark on pop culture extend beyond typical spaces. We’ll see what else she decides to try out to make a style statement. Hopefully it’s a tad less violent.

Childish Gambino Channels JAY-Z To Call Out BET Live During The Awards Ceremony

Childish Gambino called out the BET Awards while on stage at the event on Sunday night. In doing so, he complained about the lack of recognition he’s received from the organization and joked about having the same number of award wins as Sam Smith despite having more Grammy wins than Will Smith. Gambino presented Killer Mike with the award for Album of the Year and also performed a tribute to Usher, who took home the Lifetime Achievement Award.

“I’m really excited to be here, but I want to get some things on my chest first,” Gambino began. “This isn’t personal, but I just feel I should have more BET Awards. I’m serious. It’s the Black Entertainment Television Awards. How much more entertaining do I have to do?” Gambino’s lone win came with Video of the Year for his hit song, “This is America,” in 2019.

He continued: “It’s just the math of the fact, because it doesn’t really make sense. I have more Grammys than Will Smith – which makes no sense – but I have the same amount of BET Awards as Sam Smith. Does that make sense to you guys? Me and Sam Smith are neck and neck, at the Black Entertainment Television…” He ended the speech by trolling Jonathan Majors. Gambino has been receiving praise on social media for the comments, with some users also bringing up a lack of recognition for Tyler The Creator. Others compared his speech to JAY-Z’s recent rant at the Grammy Awards.

First of all, when it comes to comments, y’all… Please,” she began her remarks. “Don’t waste your whole life looking at comments, you know? When I first came into this whole world, you know, it was hard for me to kind of not look at comments. ‘Cause I was new to it, you know?

“But over time, I was just like, ‘I’m never going to see these people,’” Erica Banks went on. “I can’t allow, you know, this app to upset me and hurt my feelings. So, you know, that would just be my best advice to that. And as far as, you know, body positivity… Do you, girl, you know? I’m doing me, you know? They just getting mad at me ’cause, I mean… Sorry y’all, sorry y’all. You crazy, you are so crazy. I’m sorry, my n***a, that my choice upset y’all. But you know how it be,” she concluded after giving the camera a little spin at the behest of interviewer Jade Ashley, TSR‘s social media editor.

However, Erica Banks also has to deal with some pushback in other areas, such as her notion that she could beat Megan Thee Stallion in a freestyle battle. While there is no surefire answer here, a lot of fans pointed to Banks’ old tweets about the Houston femcee as an indicator that she is actually more of an admirer than a combatant. After all, she labeled Meg as her “alter ego.” Maybe they will settle this debate one day.

Meanwhile, the “ON HIS FACE” femcee will probably continue to live her best life and laugh at the haters in the process while encouraging her fans. She’s the one who proposed the Megan Thee Stallion battle, so if she’s all for it, that would be an interesting competition. Moreover, they broke the ice by talking about their favorite Usher song and remarking on how she’s sometimes in her R&B bag as an artist. But speaking of that, the former City Girl also had some words about the solo music that she’s working on now that the duo is no more. “Oh, Yung Miami ain’t never left, babe,” she remarked. “But… This new era that I’m stepping into, this new music that I’m working on, it’s gon’ show that growth and that improvement. And it’s gon’ show that that’s why I’m Yung Miami, that’s why I’m Caresha.”

In addition, Yung Miami also promised that her podcast Caresha Please is coming back soon, which should be very exciting for fans to hear. On it, she’s opened up diverse conversations about relationships, the music industry, the entertainment business, and a whole lot more. Caresha has quite the media empire with her brand ventures as well, and seeing them all develop in real time reinforces the others. In other City Girls news, JT recently suggested a possible explanation as to why she and Yung Miami chose to part ways as a hip-hop duo. “I did not want that to happen…” she told Keke Palmer. “When you get to the point of ego… it gets there. You forget to express yourself in a private setting, or you forget to talk like adults. It happened and it was stupid, and it’s done. It’s over with and now it’s funny to both of us. It’s hilarious to both of us. Now, it’s just a funny thing in time to us.”

Meanwhile, Playboi Carti recently seemed to shoot his shot with Yung Miami. Like most things related to Carti, his post featuring a picture of her didn’t come with much of an explanation or prelude. Moreover, after the former’s opening performance at the 2024 BET Awards last night (Sunday, June 30), she joined the latter for her own medley of some of her big 2024 singles so far. They performed their collab “Wanna Be” together (sadly, no Cardi B for the remix version) and even had a twerk-off onstage. Overall, it seems like the “Hot Girl Summer” tour mates had a very great time at the ceremony, and their collaborative and personal bond is heartening to witness.

Furthermore, this is the wholesome message that Megan Thee Stallion had for GloRilla as she reflected on their tour together, for which Glo opened for Meg. “I love the bond that me and @glorillapimp have built in these past few weeks ! Meanwhile, they all also linked up with Flo Milli on this trek, and with many collabs in between all of them this year, fans hope that they continue with even fresher and more unique ideas. Sexyy Red and Chief Keef sat right next to each other at the BET Awards, for which the former had a couple of performances to offer over the weekend. Moreover, this was a particularly interesting development for fans considering that Sexyy recently fought over Sosa with Kayla B, King Von’s sister who also claims to be in a close relationship with him. In fact, she tweeted about him right before the awards show: “[crying-laughing emoji] my man on his way 2 the B.E.T. awards looking like a Chicago rich [ninja emoji] [heart-eyes cat emoji] [crying emoji].” It seems like this whole saga might not be over yet, and we all might just be biting the bait.

Furthermore, a lot of folks assumed that this conflict between Sexyy Red, Kayla B, and Chief Keef was a promotional stunt for Sexyy and Keef’s new music video for “Bow Bow Bow (F My Baby Dad).” With this new development, this puts that interpretation under a bit more scrutiny, as it seems like they should’ve let it go already. Still, maybe there’s a delayed kick on this promo campaign for a close, or they got more than they bargained for. Nevertheless, it’s not like any party involved is claiming a really committed and exclusive thing… I mean, the two rappers are practically pretending to diss each other on “F My Baby Dad.”

No matter what’s going on with Sexyy Red, Chief Keef, and Kayla B, we’re sure that it’s all good news for all of their promo cycles and next moves. The St. Louis MC, for example, lit up the stage at the BET Awards last night with her main performance after doing so at their Experience showcase previously. A lot of this drama hasn’t stopped some fire singles and visuals from dropping; in fact, that’s what many think it’s for. Shocker…

Jokes aside, we’ll see whether any other big updates emerge from this saga. Sexyy Red, much like Chief Keef and Kayla B, has bigger fish to fry right now, most likely. At least legends like MC Lyte are there to defend her against her haters. Not that Sexyy needs it or anything, but if life is all about a balance, then this is a worthy counter to the prudes.

Ray J & Zeus Network CEO Lemuel Plummer Duke It Out At BET Awards Afterparty, Ray Speaks Out

Ray J & Lemuel Plummer, the CEO of the reality TV hub Zeus Network, reached a boiling point in their building beef last night (Sunday, June 30). Moreover, they ran into each other at a BET Awards afterparty and confronted each other, with security and entourages trying to stop their face-to-face as Ray swung on Plummer. Eventually, the singer and actor conceded and went back into his car at the behest of his team after trying to pull something out of his backpack. He had previously accused the CEO of being a “Black Jeffrey Epstein” and claimed that he has abusive, exploitative, and manipulative tendencies towards women.

While it’s unclear what prompted this fight -– and Lemuel Plummer hasn’t said anything about it at press time -– Ray J took to his Instagram Story to air out his grievances.
