Happy Heavenly Birthday To Former Bad Boy Craig Mack!

Craig Mack

On this date in 1971, rapper Craig Jamieson Mack was born in the birthplace of Hip Hop and went on to become one of the most impactful emcees on Hip Hop’s most pivotal label in the mid-late 90s, Bad Boy Records.

Produced by Easy Mo Bee, “Flava In Ya Ear” audibly captured the exactitude of one of hip-hop’s most celebrated eras. In the early 90’s, a time east coast rap was faint in hype, the coming of Craig Mack sparked its resurgence. The remix of “Flava In Ya Ear” featuring Puff Daddy (Diddy), LL Cool J, Busta Rhymes, and Rampage pushed one of the most iconic rappers to the forefront, The Notorious B.I.G, creating a timeless hip-hop melody.

Mack was signed to Diddy’s Bad Boy Entertainment when he dropped his 1994 debut Project: Funk da World, making him a Bad Boy Records pioneer. He is the first artist to release an album off of Bad Boy records, which would become the mecca for east coast rap of the 1990s, and its resurgence.

The distinctive rhymes and flows of Craig Mack are essential to the rutty and sensationally groggy sound of 1990s rap. Prior to his dawning with Bad Boy, as a young teen under the moniker MC EZ, he released one single “Just Rhymin’” in 1988, followed by “Get Retarded” with his group MC EZ & Troup.

Native to Long Island, which at the time was one of New York’s maturing hip-hop epicenters, Mack was close friends with Parrish Smith and Erick Sermon of EPMD prior to the golden era duo’s debut, and eventually went on tour with them. He helped DJ Scratch, EPMD’s DJ, amass his turntables for performances.

Mack died on March 12, 2018 from heart failure near his home in Walterboro, South Carolina. He was 47 years old. He will be physically missed, but his music will be celebrated forever!

[WATCH] G. Dep Says Technology Is Making It Hard To Adjust After Prison Life

After serving over 13 years behind bars for murder, former Bad Boy artist G. Dep admits that paying for items using his phone and pay-to-ride mopeds seen all over the city present a sort of culture shock for the 49-yer-old looking to get readjusted to society.

In his first interview since his release with Art Of Dialogue, Dep says that the biggest challenge that he’s face since his release is learning about the digital age and social media society.

Back in 2010, Dep, whose real name is Travell Coleman, confessed to a cold case homicide from 1993 after walking into an NYPD Precinct and telling them details to the murder, which earned him a second degree murder charge, which landed him behind bars.

Coleman was released on April 4 and granted a 6-month early release but doesn’t regret his decision to turn himself in.

Today in Hip-Hop History: Mary J. Blige Dropped Her Debut Album ‘What’s The 411?” 31 Years Ago

Today marks the 31st anniversary of Mary J. Blige’s debut album, What’s The 411?. This was her introduction to the world and Puff Daddy before he called himself Diddy and proclaimed Mary as the “Queen of Hip Hop Soul”.  This was one album that totally dominated not only the 90’s but also r&b music. During that time, she wasn’t your average r&b singer as she talked about love, lost, and heartbreak and she dressed in hip hop clothes instead of your typical gowns & dresses.

She released her first single, “Real Love”, which sampled rap duo Audio Two”s hit single, “Top Billin”. The album featured collaborations from rapper Grand Puba from Brand Nubian and then labelmate/boyfriend K-CI Hailey from Jodeci. She even put a spin on Chaka Khan’s single, “Sweet Thing”. Despite not being the number one in the country at the time, the album still remains a favorite among today’s singers. Some of the singles off the album still being sampled in today’s music.

Since the release of the album, Blige went on to become one of the biggest r&b singers in the world and even performed for President Obama when he was sworn into office for the first time and still continue to influence today’s singers.

Former Bad Boy President Faces Sexual Assault Allegations

Harve Pierre

Harve Pierre, the former president of Bad Boy Entertainment, is facing a lawsuit alleging sexual assault and grooming. The anonymous plaintiff referred to as “Jane Doe,” accuses Pierre of abusing his position of authority to exploit and assault her.

Another Lawsuit For Bad Boy?

In a complaint filed in New York County Supreme Court on November 22, it is alleged that Pierre engaged in a year-long pattern of grooming and sexual assault against his former assistant, referred to as “Jane Doe.”

The incidents allegedly took place in various locations across the country, with Pierre using his power to exploit and harm the plaintiff. The lawsuit claims that Pierre’s actions caused the plaintiff physical, emotional, and psychological injuries.

“Pierre used his position of authority as plaintiff’s boss to groom, exploit, and sexually assault her.” Pierre engaged in a year-long pattern of grooming plaintiff, leading to sexual harassment of plaintiff, and sexual assault,” the filing reads.

Bad Boy Under Fire

The anonymous woman seeks damages to compensate for the harm she suffered due to Pierre’s alleged actions.

The lawsuit also targets Bad Boy Entertainment, Bad Boy Records, and Combs Enterprises, claiming that they were negligent in allowing Pierre to remain in a position of authority despite his alleged misconduct. The filing suggests that the defendants should have known about Pierre’s unfitness for such a role before the sexual assault occurred.

A spokesperson for Bad Boy responded to the lawsuit, stating that they were recently made aware of the allegations, by saying:

“We have recently become aware of a lawsuit filed in New York by a former employee. The allegations are from many years ago that were never brought to the attention of the company. Neither the plaintiff nor the executive are current employees of the company. We are now investigating the allegations, and our top priority is the safety and well-being of our employees.”

The Beginning To The End?

The lawsuit was filed under the Adult Survivors Act, which allowed a one-year window for civil lawsuits relating to sexual abuse, even if the statute of limitations had expired.

This legislation provided the opportunity for individuals in New York to seek justice for past incidents of abuse. As of now, neither Harve Pierre nor his representatives have provided any comments regarding the lawsuit or the allegations made against him.

These allegations against Harve Pierre add to a growing list of sexual assault accusations within the music industry. On Nov. 16, Bad Boy CEO Diddy faced a lawsuit and was accused of sexual assault and rape by his ex-girlfriend, Cassie. The Cassie Vs. Diddy lawsuit was eventually settled for an undisclosed amount.

L.A. Reid Slammed With Sexual Assault Lawsuit

One other music executive who was accused of sexual assault was L.A. Reid. The LaFace Records co-founder was accused of sexual assault and harassment in November by former Arista Records executive Drew Dixon.
