Jam Master Jay Trial Begins Two Decades After His Murder

Jam Master Jay of Run DMC’s murder went unsolved for a long time, but almost 22 years after it, we will at least get an answer when it comes to two prime suspects. Moreover, after the jury selection phase kicked off a few days ago at press time, Ronald Washington and Karl Jordan Jr.’s trial began with opening statements on Monday (January 29). They received these federal charges in 2020 for the Brooklyn incident, which they allegedly carried out as revenge for a cocaine deal gone wrong, prosecutors argue. If convicted of these crimes, they face life sentences in prison.

Furthermore, U.S. Disctrict Judge LaShann DeArcy Hall will oversee the trial, which is expected to last a month. When news first broke that Jam Master Jay’s alleged killers would face trial this month, many folks expressed a lack of hope in justice, if these are in fact the culprits. For one, some folks did witness the murder and police developed leads upon his loss, but these never came to fruition until the charges in August of 2020. In that way, it’s similar to unsolved cases in hip-hop such as the infamous and tragic examples of Biggie Smalls and Tupac Shakur.

However, even though some rumored details of this trial didn’t manifest -– such as a double jury -– the details of the incident themselves remain murky. Prosecutors and the charges claim that Washington and Jordan intruded Jam Master Jay’s studio on October 30, 2002 at nighttime. Allegedly, Washington threatened another person in the room with a firearm, whereas Jordan shot Jay twice with one bullet striking his head at close range. In addition, prosecutors suggest that Jay had agreed to purchase 10 kilograms of cocaine that the suspects and other individuals distributed in Baltimore. The suspects chose to retaliate against the DJ when he exited the arrangement.

Meanwhile, Jay Bryant will face a separate trial for his alleged involvement in the murder, for which prosecutors charged him in May of 2023. Jordan and Washington maintain that attorneys waited too long to charge them, which will make it more difficult for them to prove their innocence due to faulty witness memory and cell phone records becoming unavailable over time. In September of 2022, a judge dismissed these concerns and questioned how they could counter prosecutors’ evidence in the first place. According to the New York Times, Kendrick Lamar made a major purchase this month, adding to his growing list of properties. He reportedly bought a duplex at Pierhouse at Brooklyn Bridge Park, which cost him $8.6 million. It was originally listed at $8.99 million.

The luxury penthouse boasts four bedrooms and three and a half bathrooms, coming in at just over 3000 square feet. Of course, it also features a breathtaking view of the NYC skyline, extravagant building amenities, outdoor space, and more. He was first reported to be eyeing the property back in August. He eyed another pricey residence in the Big Apple before the purchase, which was going for a whopping $9.85 million. It was slightly bigger than his new penthouse and would have made him neighbors with Zendaya, but Kendrick’s surely content with his choice.

This is far from Kendrick’s first property purchase, as he reportedly owns various other residences in California. In 2022, he bought a mansion in Bel Air built in the 50s by California architect Edward Fickett. The 8,000-square-foot property includes seven bedrooms and eight bathrooms, costing him a staggering $15.9 million. He also owns a $9.7 million house in Manhattan Beach, and two more properties in Southern California. He previously told Wild 94.9 that he “really [likes] to buy property.” Clearly, he wasn’t kidding.

The new penthouse isn’t the only exciting thing the performer has going for himself as of late either. He’s also in the running for three Grammy Awards at the 2024 ceremony. A new clip of a man roasting a Brooklyn mural depicting various notable hip hop artists has gone viral. In the clip, the man highlights portraits of Jay-Z, Biggie, and more, mocking them for being unrealistic. Another artist depicted in the mural is Fabolous, but the man claims the portrayal doesn’t do him any justice. “Is this really supposed to be Fabolous?” he asks, suggesting that the painting could be any number of people, including Soulja Boy.

As the clip continues to make its rounds, Fabolous chimed in earlier this week, seeming to agree with the commentary. He weighed in in the comments section of the clip, claiming that the whole thing ought to be destroyed. “Nah what block is this?” he wrote alongside a laughing emoji. “We gotta knock this wall down.”

Several fans also replied to Fabolous’ comment, poking more fun at the mural. This isn’t the only viral conversation the artist’s chimed into as of late, however. During an interview last week, he spoke on DJ Envy’s real estate scam allegations, claiming that he himself nearly invested. He recalled a phone call with the DJ, who sold it to him as a great opportunity to make some serious cash. According to him, he wasn’t all too convinced, and he never wound up investing.

“He was tellin’ me about some real estate stuff,” he began. “I’m just a guy that gotta see things through a little bit more. Nevertheless, it’s the passion that counts, and people’s cheers speak louder than words.

Furthermore, you can hear as many folks in the crowd sang along to every word of “Take Care” alongside this new Fake Drake. Not only that, but it’s possible that this was one of those club nights during which they advertise a specific artist for the dance floor. Maybe it was OVO night at this Brooklyn venue, and the fan had to come well-dressed for the occasion and prepared to impress and prompt the typical “Oh my God, you look just like him, that is so funny!” comment from a patron or two… or the whole joint.
