Jermaine Dupri Uses Sexyy Red’s Album Sales To Illustrate The Current State Of Hip-Hop And The Perils Of Streaming

Jermaine Dupri is someone who has been around the music industry for many years. Overall, he has lots of experience, and he has the resume to speak freely on the rap game and how the industry operates these days. In fact, Dupri was at the United Masters’ SelectCon conference in Atlanta recently, where he got to speak with Steve Stoute on the state of hip-hop. It was here where he referenced Sexyy Red’s album sales and noted that her numbers are indicative of what’s plaguing rap right now.

For Dupri, album sales are low right now, yet artists are still being hyped up and pushed to the forefront. “In the era that I came in the music industry, if you sold 28,000 copies, you didn’t get no other chance to walk in the building again,” Dupri explained. “N****s was not talking to you if you sold 28,000 records. It’s such a disconnect between people understanding the streaming situation and actually what you looking at. […] I came from an era where the numbers were 80,000 100, 200, 800, 900. This feels like it’s going backwards to me.”

Jermaine Dupri And Steve Stoute Debate

During the conversation, Steve Stoute offered a counterpoint. In his eyes, the low album sales are due to the fact that the streaming equivalents don’t make a lot of sense. You need 1500 streams to equal one album sale. That means 1.5 million streams is only 1000 albums. This makes it extremely difficult for artists to achieve the numbers that Dupri is talking about. That said, one has to wonder if the equivalent unit measurement will ever be changed. As it stands, some things just don’t add up.

Let us know what you think about this take from Jermaine Dupri, in the comments section down below. Do you believe that the industry is hyping up the wrong artists? How do you feel about the way album sales are counted these days especially when it comes to streaming numbers? Proof’s Son Playfully Warns Eminem About Dropping On The Same Day As Him

It goes without saying that Eminem is on good terms with the son of his late close friend Proof, but evidently, that doesn’t mean they don’t take part in a bit of friendly competition. Earlier this week, Proof’s son Nasaan took to Twitter/X to jokingly warn Eminem about dropping the same day as him. Eminem had just teased the release date for some new music on Instagram, hinting that something big is coming soon.

This led many to believe the first single from his upcoming album, The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce), will arrive on May 31. This is the same day Nasaan’s debut album, Error 404, is scheduled for release. Nasaan’s offering will feature the likes of Royce Da 5’9″, BabyTron, Icewear Vezzo, and more. He confirmed the release date earlier this month.

Nasaan Urges Eminem To Rethink His Release Date

“@Eminem dropping the same day as me?” Nasaan wrote yesterday (May 21). “I wouldn’t do that if i was you, UNLESSSS you wanna get out sold OG.” He made it clear he was only joking, following his Tweet with another asking fans to pre-save Error 404. Eminem has yet to respond, though it’s apparent that he’s been nothing but supportive of the young rapper’s musical journey thus far.

Back in 2021, Nasaan opened up about some of the encouragement he received from the Detroit icon in a Tweet. “So cr*zy cuz I feel old af (22) and get mad I’m not a megastar but then I’ll talk to Em and he’ll be like, ‘Man, I wish I was where you were when I was your age or that advance[d] musically. Sh*t makes me feel a lottttttttt better,” he wrote. What do you think of Proof’s son Nasaan giving Eminem a friendly warning about dropping the same day as him? Are you looking forward to hearing their upcoming projects? Share your thoughts in the comments section down below, and keep an eye on HNHH for more updates.

Drake Joins The Beatles To Make Billboard Chart History

Drake has become the only act in music history besides The Beatles to chart on the Billboard 200 for at least 3,000 cumulative weeks. The report comes from Chart Data, which shared the news on social media, on Thursday. The Beatles are far from the only legendary artists Drake has been competing with for his place in Billboard history. Last year, he tied Michael Jackson in his journey to have the most No. 1 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 chart ever.

The historic feat comes as Drake has been feuding with Kendrick Lamar. He’s dropped both “Family Matters” and “The Heart Part 6” to diss the rapper since last week. In response, Lamar has released “Meet The Grahams” and “Not Like Us.” Upon release of the latter, Lamar broke the record for most streams ever in a single day on the US Spotify and Global Spotify charts for a rap song.

In other Drake news, a security guard was shot outside of his home in Toronto, earlier this week. In the days since, several more people have been caught trespassing near his property. Prior to the incidents, Lamar featured an ariel view of the home as the cover art for “Not Like Us.” It featured sexual sex offender icons edited over the property.

In the time since, neither Lamar nor Drake has released any new diss tracks. Be on the lookout for further updates on Drake as well as his ongoing feud on HotNewHipHop.

Gunna’s “One Of Wun” First Week Sales Projections Are Here

Gunna’s new album, One of Wun, is headed for a top 10 debut on the Billboard 200, according to early forecasts from Hits Daily Double. The outlet estimates the rapper’s fifth studio album will earn between 60-65k album-equivalent units in its first week. Gunna dropped the project on Friday, featuring Offset, Normani, Roddy Ricch and Leon Bridges.

The new estimate represents a minor drop-off compared to Gunna’s previous effort, A Gift & a Curse, which debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 chart, earning 85,000 units. He was assisted on that project by the hit single, “FukUmean,” which reached No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Gunna Arrives At Paris Fashion Week

Speaking with XXL for a cover shoot ahead of One of Wun, Gunna explained that the new album shows his growth as an artist. “As I evolve, my music evolves, too,” he said. “I’m not the same 24-year-old that was putting out Drip Season 3, you know what I’m sayin’? Now I’m 30, and I’m dropping ‘Bittersweet’ and A Gift & A Curse. That resonates with how I’m living. Back then, it did, too. But that was for that time. So, this time, I’m just evolving differently, but it transpired over to the music, too.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Gunna discussed the efforts he’s put into losing weight since getting out of prison in 2022. On the new album’s song, “Collage,” he seemingly disses Drake by rapping: “I clear all the tabs/ They pay for their abs.” Both Rick Ross and Kendrick Lamar have recently accused the Toronto rapper of having cosmetic work done on his stomach. “Let your core audience stomach that, then tell ’em where you get your abs from,” Lamar raps on “Euphoria.” Be on the lookout for further updates on Gunna on HotNewHipHop.

Future & Metro Boomin’s “WE DON’T TRUST YOU” On Pace For 130k Sales In Its Second Week

Last week, Future and Metro Boomin’s new album WE DON’T TRUST YOU skyrocketed to number one on the Hot 100. The album was teased by both artists for more than a year and the massive amount of fan anticipation paid off. Not only did they score a number-one debut for the album but it also marked the single highest sales week for any project in 2024 so far. Unsurprisingly, the project is headed for a strong second week as well.

After pushing more than 250k combined units last week, the pair will do more than half of that in week two. The album is expected to sell upwards of 130k in its second week, an incredibly impressive number. Despite the large sales number, it won’t be enough to keep the album at number #1 on the Billboard 200. That’s because Beyonce’s new album COWBOY CARTER is set to hit the charts. The album is also expected to break the single-week sales record with new projections pushing higher than 400k first-week sales.

Future & Metro Boomin’s Second Week Sales

Fans of WE DON’T TRUST YOU got some exciting news earlier today. Future and Metro Boomin confirmed that they do in fact have another entire new album dropping soon. The follow-up project WE STILL DON’T TRUST YOU is due out next week on April 12. Not much is known about the album yet but they released a trailer teasing the forthcoming project.

While WE DON’T TRUST YOU is likely to miss out on a second week at number one, the song “Like That” from the album is still projected to top the Hot 100 for a second week. It’s currently expected to hold off Beyonce’s single “TEXAS HOLD EM” to secure a second week at number one. What do you think of Future and Metro Boomin’s WE DON’T TRUST YOU selling over 130k in its second week? Are you looking forward to their pair’s second collaborative album of the year? 21 Savage “American Dream” First Week Sales Are Here

21 Savage is back like he never left on his new album american dream, at least when it comes to his newest solo effort’s first-week sales. Moreover, new reports online indicate that the project sold 131K album-equivalent units in its first week, landing it at the No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200 chart. As such, fans may notice that these are the exact same sales numbers that his previous solo studio LP, i am > i was, sold in its first week over five years ago. Perhaps listeners and the media will portray this as a disappointment, but it’s more indicative of 21’s consistency quality and exposure-wise since 2018.

Furthermore, it’s nonetheless great to see that this album connected with a lot of people, both casual fans and die-hards alike. If you’ve been on hip-hop Twitter at all for the past couple of years, you know that some listeners have strong 21 Savage fatigue. This is because of his prolific features, collaborative full-lengths, and a firm adherence to the style that he’s most known for. But the “née-nah” MC still proves on this album that he can evolve, and we’ll see whether any track from it becomes a particular hit.

21 Savage’s american dream Sells 131K First Week

On that last point, it feels like american dream is much more of an album experience, similar to i am > i was. At least that tracklist had the massive hit “a lot,” whereas this new album doesn’t have that stellar standout commercially and critically… yet. After all, cuts like “redrum” could easily gain more steam as the year draws on, as the current era’s focus on virality means that release dates don’t matter when determining the hottest tracks today. Either way, 21 Savage should be very proud of what he and his team accomplished here, and these numbers show the fruits of their labor.

Meanwhile, with the Slaughter Gang boss’ biopic on the horizon (if it wasn’t just a rollout facade), this is another factor that could extend american dream‘s shelf life. No matter what you think about these numbers, one thing is for sure. It’s great to have hip-hop succeeding and impressing early in 2024, and setting up that momentum for the rest of the year. On that note, log back into HNHH for the latest news and updates on 21 Savage.

21 Savage Earns Fourth Number One Album On Billboard 200 With “American Dream”

Do not look now, but 21 Savage might have one of the great modern rap discographies in recent memory. According to AllHipHop, his third solo studio effort american dream will land at number one on the Billboard Hot 200 chart. This marks his fourth project to achieve this feat. The tapes that also achieved this feat were his collaborations with Drake on Her Loss and SAVAGE MODE II with Metro Boomin. Additionally, 21’s evolution on i am > i was earned him a top placement. His release over the weekend certainly deserved that coveted spot atop the heap with incredible tracks throughout.

Songs like “all of me,” “redrum,” “née-nah” with Travis Scott, and “letter to my brudda” are just a few examples of Savage being in his bag. Stats show that 21 will move close to 150,000 units. Other hip-hop and adjacent records that cracked the top 10 include Kali Uchis’ ORQUÍDEAS and Kid Cudi’s INSANO. The Latin R&B songstress will be around the first five with nearly 63,000 and Mr. Rager hovering close to 45,000.

21, 21, 21 At Number One

Even though 21 Savage did not score number one tapes with Without Warning or the introductory Savage Mode, both are still viewed in high regard. A lot of people know how talented he is. However, the narrative lately is that he is getting repetitive. The opposite is quite true in some regard with american dream. While the approach remains familiar, Savage did bring some much improved writing over his recent features. Additionally, the sample flips and the inclusion of more personal tracks were a nice change. Overall, 21 Savage is seemingly winning a lot of people back, and for good reason.

What are your thoughts on 21 Savage going number one with his brand-new album american dream? Does he possess one of the best modern trap discographies, why or why not? Will he become one of the legends of Atlanta’s trap scene when his career is over? What songs are in your rotation from the project and why? We would like to hear what you have to say about all of this. With that in mind, be sure to leave all of your hottest takes in the comments section below. Nicki Minaj’s “Pink Friday 2” Reaches One Million Units Sold In The U.S.

Nicki Minaj’s status in hip-hop is pretty much cemented now at this point in her career. Or is it? The legendary Trinidadian rapper and singer with roots in New York continues to transcend even the greatest of her accomplishments. If you have been living under a musical rock for the past month, she dropped her long-awaited album, Pink Friday 2. While some feel the tape is a bit bloated, her Barbz are still enjoying it nonetheless.

Recently, the 41-year-old femcee has been dishing out new versions of the album. The first of them was called the Gag City Deluxe. That tacked on a remix of “Beep Beep,” which included 50 Cent. Additionally, she worked with Keyshia Cole and Monica for “Love Me Enough.” Then, over this past weekend, Nicki and Future got together for a second collaboration on “Press Play.”

Whether or not Nicki did this to up the streams and sales will never be known. But, we would be remiss to say that it did not help PF2 earn its first major milestone. According to chart data, the sequel over a decade in the making has just hit one million units sold in the United States. Nicki took the time to thank her Barbz for this incredible achievement. “Thank you to every single one of you listening [and] supporting this album, the best label Republic Records, the GREATEST artists in the WORLD of our generation featured when I needed them the most,” according to a quote gathered from Revolt.

What are your thoughts on Nicki Minaj’s latest sales milestone for her new album Pink Friday 2? Is this a better record than the original Pink Friday? Do you feel she did a great marketing job to reach this goal? Or, do you think her record would have taken longer to get one million units sold without the other versions? We would like to hear what you have to say about all of this. With that in mind, be sure to leave all of your hottest takes in the comments section below. Nicki Minaj Accuses Billboard Of Threatening To Take Away “Pink Friday 2” Sales

Recently, Nicki Minaj took to X to announce that she’d be giving some of the Barbz an opportunity to select songs to appear on the deluxe edition of Pink Friday 2. Per the terms of the contest, she asked them to provide proof that they purchased all four versions of the album either digitally or on vinyl. She quickly let them know, however, that Billboard tried to put the kibosh on her contest, threatening to take away some of her album sales for requesting proof of purchase.

“Been discussing my 100 barbz contest for months,” she wrote. “They said billboard reached out to say they gon take away sales for me telling y’all about the 100 barbz thing. Can’t wait until these next 6 hours are up so I can tell y’all some sh*t. You can give out millions in cashapp money tho. Lol. So barbz, me asking you to show PROOF of something that was already DELIVERED OR PURCHASED IS AGAINST THE RULES. SO pls disregard. Apologies.”

Nicki Minaj Puts Billboard On Blast

Nicki went on to tell her fans not to buy or stream the album anymore, accusing Billboard and other companies of trying to “bring her down.” She noted how other artists have done similar contests with no consequences, and claims that they’re targeting her in particular. “They changed all those other rules specifically for me yet their own ‘ppl’ are the ones suffering from it & will CONTINUE to,” she said in a subsequent Tweet. “I don’t need any validation. Album is phenomenal & my fans as well as others love it. But they’re soooooooooo angry they couldn’t stop me.”

Regardless, it doesn’t look like Nicki’s letting the debacle get her down, as she went on to let everyone know she isn’t worried about sales. “Threatening me…like what? Huh?” she wrote. “You don’t scare me. Take away all the sales y’all want. I’ve never not ended up feeling sorry for my enemies. Read that line again. God is in control.” What do you think of Nicki Minaj calling out Billboard for allegedly threatening to take away Pink Friday 2 sales over her contest? Fabolous Uses 50 Cent and Rick Ross’ Feud To Discuss 1st Week Sales

Fabolous has weighed in on 50 Cent and Rick Ross’ ongoing feud to discuss the lack of clarity when it comes to first-week sales in the streaming era. His comments come after 50 Cent remarked, “If you sell 31,009 CDs, I shouldn’t talk to you,” referencing the underwhelming debut of Ross’ collaborative album with Meek Mill, Too Good To Be True.

“I have no dog in this fight but y’all do know 31k in sales is 46,513,000 in streams right?” Fabolous wrote in a comment on Instagram. “1500 streams = 1 unit. Low numbers in 1st week sales only could be judged in a physical era. EVERYBODY is streaming music through DSP’s now. I’m sure there’s a few people who actually buy the product but not enough to care over streaming anymore so why is this low sales number narrative still being pushed? My opinion isn’t based on 50 or Ross. I’m discussing the sales/streams conversation. My point is valid for any sales/stream talk. Not just Ross & 50. Y’all missing the point.”

Rick Ross eventually responded to 50 Cent’s criticism, ranting on social media: “Just got a DM say, ‘Rozay, we believe 50 Cent just made a comment about you online’. I seen it and I said, ‘Y’all don’t know 50 Cent like I do. He wouldn’t do that.’ For one, his b*tch Dream Chasers. She been a Dream Chasers bitch for many years, still is. That’s when she told me I was her favorite. For two, n***a, we been rich! We still getting money. Them n****s was laughing at my first-week sales. Them n****s was doing a million first week and I did 150, 180 [thousand] and they was laughing but…You smell that saltwater, right? Don’t let them n****s trick you.”
