Air Jordan 1: Michael Jordan, History, Designers And More

When the Air Jordan 1 debuted, it bore the name of one of basketball’s greatest players, Michael Jordan. This partnership between Jordan and Nike gave birth to a shoe that would forever change the sneaker world.

The History of the Air Jordan 1

The Air Jordan 1’s journey began in 1984, when Nike signed rookie Michael Jordan to a five-year endorsement deal. This bold move came during a time when Converse dominated the basketball shoe market.

The first AJ 1s hit the market in 1985. Contrary to the league’s uniform policy at the time, these sneakers flaunted the bold red and black colors of the Chicago Bulls. The NBA fined Jordan for each game he wore the shoes, which only added to their allure and popularity.

Designers Behind The Legendary Shoe

Peter Moore, Nike’s creative director at the time, was the brain behind the initial design of the Air Jordan 1. He wanted to create a shoe that mirrored Jordan’s playing style—powerful, yet graceful.

Moore’s design was both visually appealing and functional. The Jordan 1 featured a high-top silhouette for ankle support, a Nike Air unit for cushioning, and a distinctive “Wings” logo.

The Air Jordan 1 quickly transcended its basketball shoe status. It became a cultural icon, appealing to audiences beyond the sports world. The shoe’s popularity reached new heights when it appeared in Spike Lee’s film, She’s Gotta Have It.

Since its initial release, the iconic shoe variant has seen numerous colorways, collaborations, and retros. Despite its evolution, it has never lost its iconic status, remaining a staple in sneaker culture.

The Impact Of The Shoe

The Air Jordan 1’s impact extends beyond style and sports. It revolutionized the business of sports marketing, paving the way for athletes to have lucrative shoe endorsement deals.

The AJ 1 also had a significant influence on streetwear culture. It bridged the gap between sports and fashion, becoming a style statement on and off the court.

Conclusion/TLDR

In conclusion, the Air Jordan 1 is more than just a basketball shoe. It’s a symbol of Michael Jordan’s legendary career, a testament to innovative design, and an icon in the sneaker and fashion world. From its controversial debut to its lasting impact, the Jordan 1’s story is one of daring, disruption, and design excellence.

Wiz Khalifa Reveals How Curren$y Got Him Into Air Jordans

When Wiz Khalifa first burst onto the scene, most fans knew that he was mostly into Converse Chuck Taylors. Overall, his Taylor Gang label even had logos similar to the iconic shoe. However, over time, Khalifa has broadened his horizons when it comes to the sneakers that he wears. For instance, he can be seen wearing Air Jordans a lot of the time. These are a great choice as they are timeless and also have a great history within sneaker culture. Although, it took the help of a friend to get him into the brand.

Recently, Wiz Khalifa sat down with Drink Champs where he got to speak about a plethora of topics. Khalifa is always a joy to hear from as he is one of the nicest guys in the industry. Additionally, he always tries to show love whenever he can. Knowing that, it should not be a surprise that he credited Curren$y for his love of Air Jordans. As Wiz explains, he never bought Jordans before because they were too expensive growing up. However, once he met Curren$y, he became a disciple of the brand.

Wiz Khalifa Inspired By Curren$y

“I never even owned a pair of Jordans until I met Curren$y,” Wiz Khalifa explained. “I wanted some but I just never had them. Chuck’s. In Pittsburgh, it’s Air Forces, Timbs. N-ggas wore Js but like I had to choose if I was gonna spend that much money on sneakers or other things. Growing up, I never even thought about that like spending $130, $150 bucks on a pair of shoes.” Of course, Curren$y and Wiz work a lot together. That said, it only makes sense that Wiz would peep his style and be interested.

Additionally, Wiz Khalifa spoke about some of the clothes he would buy when he was young, on top of Chucks. “I would go to Army Navy and get some Dickies, get some white tees and Chucks — Carharrt like a muthafucka. That’s my whole style. Timbs cost a lot but you get like one pair of them a year,” he explained. Needless to say, Jumpman should be thanking Curren$y for influencing his peers in this way.

Union x BBS x Air Jordan 1 Collab Gets Best Look Yet

If you love the Air Jordan 1, then the last few years have been a whole lot of fun for you. Overall, this sneaker is consistently getting some amazing new offerings. Moreover, the shoe has gotten its fair share of great collaborations, as well. Although, it should be noted that not all collabs are created equal. That said, one offering that has stood above the rest is the Union x Air Jordan 1 collab from a few years ago. Sneakerheads still remember these fondly, and they should be happy to know another Union x AJ1 collab is coming.

In fact, this new collaboration has a wild new aesthetic to it. In plenty of new photos, we have seen how the shoe has this weird woven stitching along the sides and the back heel. Now, however, it is being revealed that this is because the shoe has a third collaborator. According to @zsneakerheadz on Instagram, this shoe will also contain some aesthetics from Bephie’s Beauty Supply. Overall, the inclusion of BBS is very welcomed here, and it leads to a fantastic shoe.

Air Jordan Gets The Union & BBS Treatment

In the images up above, you can get a better sense of what this shoe will look like. Overall, that woven stitching along the side is going to be very polarizing. However, there are definitely some fans who are absolutely going to love it. As for the colors at play here, this shoe plays it pretty neutral. Firstly, the majority of the upper is made of white leather. Secondly, we get some grey here on the cuff and the Nike swoosh. The midsole has an aged yellow look to it, while finally, the laces are a mustard shade of yellow.

As for the release date, nothing has been revealed. Although, it is believed that this shoe will be dropping in August. Now, we wait for Union or Jordan Brand to confirm the details.
