OutKast Celebrates 25th Anniversary Of “Aquemini” With Visuals For “SpottieOttieDopaliscious: Watch

OutKast’s incredible reputation proceeds them at this point. Their massively successful catalog is undoubtedly one of the very best in hip-hop history. Of course, that goes to Big Boi and Andre 3000’s songwriting skills. They were able to create lush and colorful soundscapes in so many different ways, that there are not many who can replicate their artistry. Even with all of the vast talent in the Atlanta rap scene, you would be hard-pressed to find someone better than these two. The duo has been celebrating a lot this year. Namely, the anniversaries of their classic albums.

Two of their most well-known albums, ATLiens, and Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, both hit incredible milestones. The first of the two just turned 27 a few days ago and the latter is 20 years old. Now, they paying homage to another one of their records, Aquemini. Their third project, released back in 1998 hit the 25th anniversary mark not too long ago. How did OutKast decide to celebrate this momentous occasion? They just put out some stunning, colorful, and trippy visuals for one of the tracks.

OutKast Puts Out Music Video For “SpottieOttieDopaliscious”

The one they chose to show love to is “SpottieOttieDopaliscious.” One of the longer tracks off of the project, it is a rich-sounding vibe filled with horns and a whole lot of soul. Unfortunately, there is no reunion of sorts in these visuals, just some eclectic color schemes and mind-bending sequences. Without being greedy, they do fit the song perfectly, showing that OutKast still has the creative juice. The video above was posted originally by HipHopDX.

What are your initial thoughts on these visuals from OutKast for “SpottieOttieDopaliscious” from Aquemini? Were you disappointed that they did not film a music video together for it? Is this your favorite song off of the album? We want to hear what you have to say about all of this. Released on September 29, 1998 via Rawkus Records, the album marked the first collaborative album between Talib Kweli and Mos Def, who now goes by Yasiin Bey. Black Star’s all-time classic debut put Bey and Kweli on the map, paving the way for their successful solo careers. It was released on the same day as JAY-Z’s Vol. 2… Hard Knock Life and Outkast’s Aquemini. Still, even with strong competition, Black Star made an impact with a d album that remains widely celebrated. Today, we are revisiting Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star for its 25th anniversary.

Yasiin Bey & Talib Kweli: A Quest To Distinguish Themselves

Before they would establish careers as solo artists, Yasiin Bey and Talib Kweli set themselves apart from their contemporaries with the first Black Star album. It was a significant release at a time when shiny suits were dominating mainstream hip hop. Black Star’s skillful lyricism over rhythmic boom-bap beats, courtesy of Hi-Tek, counteracted a large majority of popular rap music at the time, allowing consciousness to prosper.

In many ways, Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star helped bridge the gap between mainstream and underground audiences. It may have been released on an independent label to a niche audience, but it captured mainstream attention with catchy songs like “Definition” and “Brown Skin Lady.” Bey and Kweli were respected lyricists within the indie rap community who reached commercial success, which they maintained throughout their solo careers.

Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star paid tribute to its influences while paving the way for hip hop’s future. They interpolated lyrics and concepts from Slick Rick and Boogie Down Productions as an homage to the pioneers who broke down the doors. Black Star also included an ode to B-Boys and breakdancing culture with the playful “B Boys Will B Boys.” They even dedicated moments to 2Pac and The Notorious B.I.G. on the chorus of “Definition.”

Setting The Standard For Fruitful Solo Careers

Yasiin Bey and Talib Kweli displayed their chemistry on “Astronomy (8th Light)” and out-rapped each other on “Definition” and “Redefinition.” “Respiration” with Common saw the group at their most focused while “K.O.S. (Determination)” saw them at their most conscious. The aforementioned “Brown Skin Lady” is a playful highlight while “Thieves in the Night” was a moment of contemplation before the posse cut finale, “Twice Inna Lifetime.”

Black Star’s debut album not only established one of hip hop’s best duos, but it launched Yasiin Bey and Talib Kweli into successful solo careers. The album’s afrocentricity translated into their work as a part of the Soulquarians collective. Releases from the collective of rappers, singers, and musicians included the debut solo albums from both Bey and Kweli. While both artists experimented with other styles, they continued to harness the magic of their collaborative work.

Hi-Tek, who produced six songs on Black Star’s debut, joined forces with Talib Kweli as Reflection Eternal for 2000’s Train Of Thought. 88-Keys, who also contributed numerous beats, produced on Yasiin Bey’s iconic solo debut, 1999’s Black On Both Sides. Bey proved himself to be limitless in his solo career while Kweli became one of the most consistent hip hop artists. The two may have gone their separate ways artistically, but they continued to work together, maintaining the legacy of their debut.

Black Star Keeps Shining

Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star is not only a special album to hip hop as a genre, but the duo looks back on it fondly. In an episode of People’s Party With Talib Kweli, Black Star reminisced on the album’s creation and what it meant to them. Yasiin Bey said that the album came from “a New York of another time” and that it serves as a vehicle for the late 1990’s. He elaborated that it was “beyond time” and “not trapped in its era,” although they directly pointed to their influences. Kweli also ranks it high in his discography.

The two went on very different paths in their respective solo journeys, but Black Star occasionally collaborated. Over the years, they sporadically released songs before dropping their long-awaited second album, 2022’s No Fear Of Time. The Madlib-produced album saw a natural evolution of the duo’s chemistry, although very different from its predecessor. It managed to honor the legacy of their classic debut. Overall, Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star is a monumental release in hip hop as it defined an era while creating a new lane for lyricism. Over two decades later, Black Star continues to shine.

Today, fans can get an exclusive glimpse behind-the-scenes of the official music video for “Rosa Parks,” the Grammy nominated and critically acclaimed track from Outkast’s third album, Aquemini, in the latest episode of Vevo Footnotes. The episode is part of Vevo’s original content and specialized programming to celebrate the historic 50th Anniversary of Hip-Hop.

In the episode, Big Boi describes the music on Aquemini as a blend of Outkast’s “complex music” on their debut album “Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik” with the “ferocious lyrics” found on their sophomore album ATLiens. The episode highlights that the parade scene in the music video was filmed in front of the iconic Atlanta nightclub, The Royal Peacock. And points out that the marching band in the video is from the historic Morris Brown College, and that the college’s gospel choir is featured on their track “Bombs Over Baghdad.” Additionally, the episode mentions that the standout harmonica solo is performed by Andre 3000’s stepfather, Reverend Robert Hodo.

Today in Hip Hop History: Lauryn Hill’s Solo Debut Album ‘The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill’ Turns 25 Years Old!

Screen Shot 2023 08 25 at 9.50.14 AM

On this date in 1998, after her successful intro into the game with The Fugees, Lauryn Hill embarked on her solo journey and released her first solo LP entitled The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill on the Ruffhouse/Columbia imprint.

As a play on the titles of Carter G. Woodson’s The Mis-Education of the Negro and the 1972 film The Education Of Sonny Carson, Lauryn Hill’s Miseducation album fused the sounds of neo-soul, reggae, R&B and Hip Hop to create an album unlike anything similar to that which was created during the “bling” era. The 16 track classic was a mainstream hit, mainly because of the cross over appeal of singles like “Everything Is Everything”, “Doo Wop(That Thing}”, Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You” and “Ex-Factor”, with production courtesy of Ms, Hill herself.

Supreme shout out to Ms, Hill for this timeless piece of Hip Hop history!

Lauryn Hill Announces 25th Anniversary Tour For “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill”

Lauryn Hill will officially be embarking on a tour celebrating the 25th anniversary of her iconic album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Concerts will begin, this fall, with a show in Minneapolis. Fugees as well as Koffee will be joining her for several dates.

In a press release, Hill said: “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is and was a love song to my parents, my family, my people, my musical and cultural forebears, my teachers, my loves, my Creator. I wrote love songs and protest songs—(still love songs) about the subjects and interests that inspired and moved me. I was confident that what inspired me would resonate with an audience that had been led to believe that songs of that kind could only live in the past.”

Today in Hip-Hop History: Snoop Dogg’s Third Solo LP ‘Da Game Is To Be Sold, Not To Be Told’ Turns 25 Years Old!

tumblr c2f720556d7aefbef0a3e2e0bd3a1e09 441b2b0b 1280

On this day in Hip Hop history, Snoop Dogg released his third LP Da Game Is To Be Sold, Not To Be Told, his first release on No Limit Records. Although met with mixed reviews from critics, this #1 album may very well be the most important project of Snoop’s career.

Following the release of his sophomore LP Tha Doggfather, Snoop’s relationship with Death Row Records began to deteriorate. The aftermath of Dr. Dre leaving the label brought the worst out of its co-founder Suge Knight causing his iron dictatorship business model to only tighten its grip. Snoop’s disapproval of Death Row owning and profiting off of everything that he had recorded since signing along with receiving luxurious gifts in lieu of royalties led to his refusal to write another bar for Knight until his contract was up, excluding of course the infamous “F*ck Death Row.” A year later, Snoop finally decided to call it quits and take his talents down south.

Snoop signed with P. Miller in 1998 and officially became a part of the hottest rap syndicate of the time, No Limit Records. The No Limit army had begun to monopolize the rap game in 1997 with the release of Master P’s Ghetto D which peaked at #1 on the Billboard 200 and set what would be the labels most successful year. Much like the 2010 signing of LeBron James to the Miami Heat, Snoop Dogg’s joining No Limit brought with it nothing but success and took the label to the top of the rap game.

The anticipation of a Snoop Dogg album without Death Row brought about so much hype that the album debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 and sold 520,000 copies in its first week. Critics had a lot to say about this album as it received mixed reviews across a plethora of publications. With the majority of critics citing the change in style and production of this project to fit the No Limit uniform, many praised the transition Snoop was making from a strictly West Coast G-Funk artist to one that could appeal to a wider range of Hip Hop fans. Snoop’s talent mixed with Master P’s marketing genius brought this tape to make chart appearances in ten countries across the globe and sell 3,985,360 copies in the United States alone.

With this album, Snoop proved that he was more than just another West Coast gangsta rapper. Although his album sales of previous albums were enough to set him apart from his local competition, never before had a West Coast artist been able to step outside of California and retain and gain the respect that Snoop did. His ability to thrive in the dirty south during an era of Hip Hop where factions and tension based on geography were at an all-time high showed that his talent was above the petty beef and could shine on any front.

Today In Hip Hop History: Cam’Ron’s ‘Confessions Of Fire’ LP Turns 25 Years Old!

Screen Shot 2023 07 21 at 12.12.59 PM

Wearing goggles, gloves, and overalls, Cam’ron stood with a sledgehammer in hand, at a foundry as he was ready to make his mark on Hip Hop. On this day 25 years ago he released his debut album Confessions of Fire.

Many had come to know him as a member of Harlem’s Children of the Corn, a group that also included Big L, Ma$e, and Cam’s cousin, Bloodshed. Following the untimely death of Bloodshed, the group disbanded and Cam’ron went solo.

Highlighted by leadoff singles “357,” “Horse & Carriage” featuring Ma$e and “Feels Good” which featured Usher, the album also saw appearances from N.O.R.E., Jermaine Dupri, and Charlie Baltimore to name a few.On this album, Cam’s mix of hardcore street appeal and pop-infused ballads would prove to be effective as the album peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard 200 chart and No.2 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop chart. Propelled by the Trackmasters-produced “Horse & Carriage” which reached No. 41 on the Billboard Hot 100, the album would sell over 500,000 copies and achieve gold certification.

These days we have come to love him as the head of Dipset and one of the biggest style influences in the industry. However, Confessions of  Fire laid the foundation for the star Cam became.

Today In Hip Hop History: DMX’s Debut Album ‘It’s Dark and Hell Is Hot’ Turns 25 Years Old!

tumblr 1f9b3ed9576c580e66b684d14a14bd8e b4bf0ce9 1280 1

On this day in Hip Hop history DMX released his debut album It‘s Dark and Hell Is Hot. This is DMX’s most popular project to date, with Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood serving as a close second. Within the first week of its release selling 251,000 copies debuting at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The LP went on to become certified quadruple platinum on December 18th, 2000.

This project came during a turbulent time in Hip Hop. The genre was coming off of the loss of two titans, Tupac and The Notorious B.I.G., and was facing a change in what was hot. With the rise of high energy production melded with dark and oft-violent lyricism coming from camps like No Limit, Cash Money, and Three 6 Mafia, DMX’s sound allowed him to find his place perfectly within the current trend while add his own twist.

DMX’s melancholic realism spoke to the generation. This project was able to simultaneously turn the party up and cause its listeners to think introspectively about the concept of good and evil and existence as a whole. This album touched on the struggle and pain that came being DMX. As most rappers would glamorize the finer side of the industry life, DMX reveals through this debut that even early on in his career he had been wrestling with the demons that come with wealth and fame.

The stand out hit of the album, “Ruff Ryders’ Anthem”, has been deemed as a classic squad anthem. Produced by Swizz Beatz, the single peaked at #93 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #79 on VH1’s 100 Greatest Songs of Hip Hop.

Following this album, DMX went on to release six other studio albums and rise to be one of the most popular and influential artists of the early 2000s. Shortly following the release of this album DMX made his film debut in the hit film Belly with fellow New York rapper, Nas.
