Nas Adds Three New Shows With The Philharmonic To His Las Vegas Residency
Now that Las Vegas residencies are cool again, it seems every artist of a certain stature either has one scheduled or is rumored to be working on one. The Killers just completed a run of shows for the 20th anniversary of Hot Fuss, Janet Jackson will finish out the year and open the next with a slate of shows at Resorts World, and Nas, who took his own advice in getting out of his comfort zone with three shows with the Las Vegas Philharmonic, has just announced his return to the Encore Theater at Wynn after that successful debut.
The dates for the new shows are February 5, 7, and 8, 2025. Tickets will go on sale this Friday, September 13, 2024, at 10 AM PT. The press release for the new dates notes that during his show on August 31, Nas said, “I could get used to doing this Vegas thing. I might extend it.” You can find more information here.
As with many of his peers’ residencies, Nas’ collection of shows celebrates the 30th anniversary of his debut album, Illmatic, with classical renditions of its instrumentals performed by the Las Vegas Philharmonic orchestra — a concept he pioneered at the Kennedy Center in 2018. Nas will continue to get out of his comfort zone this year with a pair of potentially eyebrow-raising projects: a Broadway adaptation of Beat Street, and a concept album inspired by the cult film The Warriors produced by Lin-Manuel Miranda of Hamilton fame.
Kendrick Lamar’s Compton Mural Vandalized With “OVO” Message
Someone in Los Angeles appears to have vandalized a mural of Kendrick Lamar in his hometown of Compton. In a video circulating on social media, the person sprays black paint over three images of Lamar’s face in the mural, which is situated outside of Honduras Restaurant Mi Sabor. For the final picture, they write out OVO, a reference to Drake’s October’s Very Own brand. Lamar and Drake have been feuding for months at this point.
One image from the mural shows Lamar accepting the key to the city of Compton in February 2016 while a second shows him accepting the Best Rap Album award for Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers at the 65th Grammy Awards. There is also a reference to the cover artwork for his iconic album, good Kid, m.A.A.d City. It appears that the artist finished it earlier this summer.
Kendrick Lamar Films “Not Like Us” Music Video In Compton
The vandalism comes after the NFL announced that Lamar will be headlining the Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show in New Orleans. In sharing the news on Instagram, Lamar trolled Drake in a video on the platform. He remarked: “You know it’s only one opportunity to win a championship — no round twos.” Drake had recently teased being ready for a “Game 2” on his Instagram Story. Not everyone has been happy with the move. Many fans have complained that Lil Wayne should’ve headlined the event, which is taking place in his hometown. Cam’ron called out JAY-Z for his role in choosing Lamar on the latest episode of It Is What It Is.

Tyrese Arrested After Refusing To “Illegally” Pay $10,000 In Child Support
In an update from The Neighborhood Talk, singer and actor Tyrese has officially been arrested. This very recent news comes just hours after the Los Angeles, California native revealed in a now deleted IG post that this was a real possibility. It stems from the still ongoing divorce with ex-wife Samantha Lee, but more specifically the financial/child support side of things. Since August of 2022, Ms. Lee has been trying to get $10,000 a month from him to help aid their five-year-old child they have together. Initially, it was around $20,000.
Still, though, Tyrese has been fighting against it for a while now and continued to do so today at his court hearing in Atlanta at 9 a.m. In his long, confusing, and aforementioned post to social media he even labeled it illegal. In addition to this, he claimed that Samantha’s two lawyers on the case are close friends with the Judge. Overall, he feels this whole situation is essentially unjust.

Not much else is known at this time, as this news has pretty much just broke. So, be sure to stick with us for more developments around this.
What are your thoughts on Tyrese being arrested for denying to pay child support? Do you think this is a major injustice, why or why not? NLE Choppa’s Baby Mama Addresses “Coming Out” Post And Whether Or Not He’s Gay
NLE Choppa’s recent attempt to stir the online pot was pretty successful, even if it was the most predictable thing in the world. He tweeted “I’m Coming Out…” with some mirror selfies and then clarified that it was for a new song, which is queer-baiting at its finest. However, the Memphis MC isn’t doing so in the traditionally pejorative way that this term exists in. Usually, that refers to people trying to be a part of the LGBTQIA+ community by giving signals of their identity, but really they just want to reach that audience. He, on the other hand, is doing this to point out the hypocrisy and bigotry that’s still present against many rappers, as he’s made his sexuality clear before. Choppa’s baby mama Marissa took to her IG Live to speak on this matter.
“My baby daddy is not gay,” Marissa began concerning NLE Choppa. “He is not gay. *laughs* He’s not gay, he’s just trolling y’all because y’all think he gay. Or whatever the f**k, I don’t know why y’all troll him. But it’s a marketing strategy. It’s an attention-seeking thing. He not gay. I mean, if he was, that’s his preference.” Then, she went on to sing the classic “I’m Coming Out” by Diana Ross for a couple of bars. Overall, it seems like this is exactly the kind of social media swindle that everyone guessed was happening with Choppa’s tweet.

NLE Choppa’s Baby Mama Speaks
It’s a complicated issue, and one for which we have no authority to judge NLE Choppa’s authenticity, earnestness, or message. That is not our place, but rather than of the LGBTQIA+ community who are discussing his actions, his support, and his statements in relation to their struggles. The 21-year-old is very supportive of the community, and what we can do from the perspective of fellow allies is applaud that and continue to learn from what the community chooses.
Meanwhile, his brash style at New York Fashion Week is also drawing a lot of conversation. NLE Choppa knows how to play the game, and those who fell for it and angrily reacted are part of what he’s trying to point out. This complex dynamic goes far beyond hot rap songs and social media debates. So we’ll see how it continues to evolve, and hopefully hip-hop’s treatment of the LGBTQIA+ community improves and rectifies itself further.
