Beyonce Fans Are Livid After “COWBOY CARTER” Gets Zero Country Music Awards Nominations

Beyonce’s COWBOY CARTER is one of 2024’s big pop culture moments, due in part to the genre conversation that it created. Moreover, it wasn’t the first time that music listeners debated over Black erasure in country music and how racial bias impacts stereotypical stylistic categorization. However, it was probably the biggest discussion on this topic in a while, and it just got a whole lot spicier. Moreover, this year’s Country Music Awards did not nominate the album nor its artist for a single award despite it being one of the highest-grossing country projects of the year. Not even some of the LP’s biggest hits could get some love.

Of course, the Beyhive is absolutely outraged by this, although it’s sadly not very surprising considering the contentious genre dynamics we referred to earlier. But COWBOY CARTER and Beyoncé definitely deserved at least something. This is all pretty ironic because, while the CMAs refuse to acknowledge her work, folks like Donald Trump still try to use her music for their own gain. It’s a cyclical and parasitic relationship sometimes, but the Texas native is big enough to where she can sidestep a lot of these consequences.

Beyonce Gets Snubbed By CMAs

Elsewhere, another source of outrage for Beyoncé fans was KAYTRANADA’s recent comments on her. “Sometimes people don’t see your worth and how important you are. I know what I mean to people,” he said during an interview of her efforts to own the rights to his “CUFF IT” remix. “Mannnn I didn’t drag her that’s just what happened,” KAYTRA clarified online. “The remix didn’t get a release and it is what it is but later that year I opened [for] her on tour AND on her Bday on top of that. Now what? I love that girl & y’all ain’t gonna make me look like I ain’t rocking with her.”

Meanwhile, Beyonce also got some criticism from Azealia Banks recently (a shocker, we know) over her whiskey brand. “I’m sorry Beyonce I love you down,” she tweeted. “But ‘SIRDAVIS’ is a horrible name for a luxury spirits brand. Its so ghetto. Its giving 1980’s hood francophile ‘Latoya, Shaniqua’ teas. Change the name to ‘Renaissance.’ That’s actually a marketing slay. Renaissance whisky gives me classy successful handsome older black man with the good cologne & the good teeth/ spent $500,000 buying out some superbowl box seats / expensive legacy d**k. ‘Sir Davis’ is giving southern comfort/ e&J with some matted dreads and dry knuckles.”

Charlamagne Tha God Theorizes Drake Has Already Taken Legal Action Over Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl Performance

Charlamagne Tha God says he expects that people from the NFL, Roc Nation, and more all received legal letters in the wake of Kendrick Lamar announcing his performance at the Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show. Discussing the move on Monday’s episode of The Breakfast Club, Charlamagne argued that Drake will not be okay with Lamar calling him a pedophile on stage at the event.

“If he does ‘Not Like Us’ at the Super Bowl, I want the opening cords and then just the hook,” Charlamagne began. “If you think that the NFL and Roc Nation and a bunch of other people didn’t get a whole bunch of legal letters yesterday from people with owls as their stamp. I promise you, you’re not calling me a pedophile at the Super Bowl. I guarantee you, the OVO people sent so many legal letters yesterday.”

From there, Charlemagne discussed fans being upset that the NFL didn’t choose Lil Wayne to perform at the event. One of the many voices to speak out on that topic was Master P. He argued on social media: As Ambassador of Entertainment in the City of New Orleans I have to agree with the fans that Lil Wayne should be a part of this celebration as well. He’s one of the greatest Hip Hop artists alive, still relevant and he’s a New Orleans native. Let’s not miss this cultural moment in the South. Life is too short! We have to give our legends their flowers while they are here. #Godisgood Change starts with us.” Cam’ron also addressed JAY-Z about the decision on It Is What It Is.

Boosie Badazz Rants Against Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl Halftime Show

Boosie Badazz is one of many people online who have an issue with Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl halftime show. However, his background for this debate is much different than other conversations happening online. For one, a lot of people are just roping the Drake battle into this and making this more about a war between OVO and Roc Nation. But the Baton Rouge native loves his native Louisiana, and agrees with people saying that Kendrick was a deserved pick, but the incorrect one. Specifically, he shouted out some other New Orleans rap legends that should’ve been tapped to perform at the massive event in the city on February 9, 2025.

“ALL YALL ACTING LIKE YALL COOL WITH HOW THEY PLAYING IT FOR THE SUPERBOWL,” Boosie’s rant against Kendrick Lamar began. “SMH THE MOST CULTURAL CITY N THE USA( NEW ORLÉANS)ITS A SMACK N THE FACE TO EVERY HIP HOP LEGEND FROM LOUISIANA!! @MasterPMiller @BIRDMAN5STAR THIS SHOWS THEY NEVER WANTED YALL TO KICK N THE DOOR N THE FIRST PLACE CAUSE THEY STILL TRYNA LOCK IT!! SUPERBOWL 22” WAS N CALI N CALI ARTIST WAS ALLOWED TO DO THEY THANG N IT WAS A GREAT SHOW!! BUT NOW ITS N LOUISIANA N NO LOUISIANA LEGENDS CANT DO THEY THANG #idontrespectit.”

Boosie Speaks On Kendrick Lamar Super Bowl

Boosie does bring up a solid point: Kendrick Lamar performed at the 2022 Super Bowl alongside Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, and more in California, and the next two Super Bowls will be in the state. But there are also so many other factors that contributed to this decision that it’s hard to really blame anyone for it specifically. In a similar way, it’s tough to attribute negative attacks to this move or characterize it as something that deep. Jay-Z seems pretty excited for the whole thing. But the big factors of criticism at the end of the day are the NFL’s treatment of the Black community and the promotion of the U.S.’ capitalist machine, not whether or not Lil Wayne should’ve been the headliner.

Meanwhile, there’s still a lot of debate over whether or not a Weezy halftime show would be good. Conversely, there are plenty of fans who don’t think Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl will be that good, and there are loads of others that think it will be spectacular. At the end of the day, it’s the same conversation we’ve always had around this topic. We just swapped out the names.

Jennifer Lopez Holds Hands With Matt Damon Amid Ben Affleck Divorce

Jennifer Lopez is back on social media amid her divorce from Ben Affleck, and she’s making sure to head outside too. Moreover, she recently attended the Toronto International Film Festival for her new movie Unstoppable, for which Matt Damon is also a part of the team. In fact, new pictures (which you can view by clicking the “Via” link below) show them holding hands and having a conversation together. Damon and Affleck have been very good friends since they were children, so a lot of people expressed much interest in this interaction. Of course, this is all just gossip and hearsay, and we can’t imagine that J. Lo and Matt haven’t developed a friendship over the years.

“What fun, what a joy to do something with her,” Ben Affleck had said of working with Jennifer Lopez on Unstoppable, which he and Matt Damon helped produce. “See her be great, go to work with your wife, go to work with your best friend. If you don’t like who you’re working with, and if you have difficulty or trouble at work, I think it’s one of the things that can really cause depression, anxiety and pain for people… Can’t make it look like she’s doing it as a favor to me, but actually she is.”

Meanwhile, other salacious rumors around this split is Mariah Carey’s alleged glee over Jennifer Lopez’s struggles. “Mariah is really excited to be getting back to Vegas and looking forward to proving she’s still at the top of the game when it comes to putting on a show and bringing in ticket sales,” an allegedly close source reportedly told In Touch. “She’s extra excited to show that she’s still got it after J. Lo had to go and cancel her concert tour. […] [She] took a lot of pleasure in seeing her fall on her face. She believes it’s karma biting her in the butt because she’s not as talented as she thinks and way too arrogant.”

In other news, folks recently looked back at a clip of Jennifer Lopez picking between Ben Affleck and Diddy. She hilariously joked that she’d let both of them drown, but that’s obviously under a darker context these days. Nevertheless, this new Matt Damon interaction may be interesting, but it’s probably not amounting to anything. So don’t expect an update on this in the near future… But you never know!

Cam’ron Calls Out JAY-Z After The NFL Snubs Lil Wayne For Kendrick Lamar At Super Bowl LIX

Cam’ron thinks the NFL should’ve chosen Lil Wayne to headline Super Bowl LIX, considering the game is being held in New Orleans. He shared his take on Kendrick Lamar serving as the headliner during an episode of It Is What It Is after the league made the announcement on Sunday. He began by clarifying that he is a fan of Lamar and means no disrespect before going after JAY-Z.

“I love Kendrick Lamar, I loved the pop-out,” Cam started. “I think he’s one of the top artists of this generation, period. Hate the selection. It’s in New Orleans, and you don’t get Lil Wayne? That’s what we doing…not just Hot Boyz, Cash Money, all the songs Lil Wayne has done, whether it’s Blink 182…there’a no reason why Lil Wayne should not be performing at the Super Bowl.”

From there, Cam further accused JAY-Z of being the person responsible for stopping Wayne from performing. “It’s not really a secret. Lil Wayne had a problem with somebody before who’s kinda part of the organization running it. This is payback,” he stated. After Mase chimed in to note Wayne and Drake’s connection, Cam added: “Bro, it’s ridiculous…Lil Wayne not to be performing in New Orleans for the Super Bowl is egregious, and it gotta stop.” JAY-Z and Roc Nation are serving as strategic entertainment advisors for the performance. In a statement of his own, JAY praised Lamar for his “artistic vision” and said his “impact will be felt for years to come.”

The 1999 VMAs Were A Culmination Of Hip Hop’s Transcendence

The 1999 VMAs Were A Culmination Of Hip Hop’s Transcendence

Written by: Zachary Draves

Twenty-five years ago, the MTV Video Music Awards celebrated the diversity of hip hop during an impactful year.

By the dawn of the new millennium, hip-hop was at a crossroads.

There was still a significant void after the killings of Tupac Shakur in 1996 and the Notorious B.I.G. in 1997. Their deaths stemmed from an intense east coast/west coast turf war where nobody dared to cross enemy lines.

Allegiances were seemingly set in stone, but cracks started to show in 1999. There was plenty of talent to go around regardless of the fealty of one particular region.

Jay Z, Nas, and DMX respectively took over New York. Eminem put Detroit on the map with the release of The Slim Shady LP. Snoop Dogg found peace with Master P’s No Limit Records after tumultuous tenure with Death Row Records and the release of his No Limit debut No Limit Top Dogg. Cash Money Records featuring Lil Wayne, B.G, the Hot Boys, and Juvenile helped to sustain the south.

The phenomena of nu-metal, a unique blend of rap, heavy metal, and grunge, were pervasive with Limp Bizkit and Korn.

Women in hip hop reached critical mass in 1999. Lauryn Hill was riding high off the success of her groundbreaking album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Lil Kim was coming into her own post Biggie with her blistering lyricism and fashion sense as she prepped for her second album The Notorious K.I.M. Missy Elliot held double duty as a trendsetting artist, producer, and music video revolutionary with her sophomore album Da Real World. TLC came back from a five year hiatus with their fan appreciation album Fanmail

The moral panic surrounding the perceived social ills of popular music and its connection with youth culture had shifted towards the satanism of Marilyn Manson and so called “goth music”. In the aftermath of that year’s shooting at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado the shooters were accused of being influenced by the music.

A few years prior it was “gangsta rap” being subjected to congressional hearings and organized boycotts of  Time Warner and other major labels by civic leaders such as C. Delores Tucker alongside former Reagan Education Secretary William Bennett.

By 1999, hip hop was an embedded part of American popular culture. It was infused into everything from movies, commercials, sports, and fashion.

Those elements came to the fore at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City during some notable moments.

Lauryn Hill took home four awards, including the VMA for the coveted Video Of The Year for “Doo Wop (That Thing).”

Lil Kim rocked a lavender pasties outfit inspired by Missy Elliot, and Diana Ross jiggled her breast while presenting the award for Best Hip Hop Video alongside Mary J. Blige, where The Beastie Boys won for their song ”Intergalactic”

It was during the acceptance speech that Adam Horovitz made a plea about respect for women and girls and safety at music festivals after the horrific acts of violence on display at that summer’s Woodstock 99, where there were multiple incidents of sexual assault.

In a heartfelt moment, Will Smith introduced Afeni Shakur (Tupac mother’s) and Voletta Wallace (Biggie’s mother) to present the award for Best Rap Video, which went to Jay Z for “Can I Get A…” ft. Ja Rule and Amil off the Rush Hour soundtrack.

Eminem won for Best New Artist Video for “My Name Is” while also performing alongside Snoop Dogg and Dr Dre. TLC performed “No Scrubs,” and the video won for Best Group Video.

In replacement of DMX, who was scheduled to perform, Jay Z took the stage and performed “It’s A Hard Knock Life”, “Can I Get A…”, and “Jigga My N—-”.

The 99 VMAs were more than an annual award ceremony honoring the best in music at the dawn of a new century; they solidified hip hop’s forever place in the broader culture.

There wasn’t a need for any singular voice or even a handful to carry the weight, a collection of artists with a vast array of skills from all regions of the country kept the music alive.
