Keegan-Michael Key Reflects on Drift from Jordan Peele: “It’s a Tragedy”

Comedian Keegan-Michael Key has opened up about the changing dynamic between him and his former comedy partner, Jordan Peele, admitting that they don’t see each other as much anymore—a situation Key calls “a tragedy.”

Speaking with People, Key, 53, fondly recalled the early days of his partnership with Peele, 45, which began when they both starred on MADtv in 2004. “It was a thrilling time in my life,” Key said. “We were sharing a mind.” The two bonded over their mutual comedic influences and their time at Chicago’s Second City, which created a unique synergy that would later fuel their Emmy-winning sketch comedy series Key & Peele.

“When we were on camera, it was alchemy,” Key explained. “It was just like, ‘Why is this working?’”

However, in the nearly ten years since Key & Peele ended its run in 2015, their paths have diverged. “We don’t see each other that often anymore, which is, to me, a tragedy,” Key revealed. While they’ve reunited for projects like the 2016 action-comedy Keanu and voiced characters together in Toy Story 4 and Wendell & Wild, life has taken them in different directions. Peele has found success in horror, while Key has pursued more dramatic roles.

“His desire was to start exploring the horror genre, and my desire was to do more dramatic work,” Key said. With Peele based in Los Angeles and Key living in New York City, the physical distance also plays a part in their separation.

Despite this evolution, Key acknowledged that the foundation they built with Key & Peele was crucial for both of them: “We needed that first platform.” Although their personal and professional journeys have led them down different paths, their collaborative magic remains a huge part of both their legacies.

Alyssa Thomas came up clutch for the Connecticut Sun, hitting a key push shot with 12 seconds remaining to secure a 73-70 road win over the Minnesota Lynx in Game 1 of their WNBA Semifinal series. Thomas, who narrowly missed recording her fifth career playoff triple-double, finished with 17 points, 10 rebounds, and 9 assists.

Despite falling just short of the historic stat line, Thomas delivered when it mattered most. “It was a tough game, but we stayed composed and made the plays we needed to win,” said Thomas, whose basket sealed the victory.

Marina Mabrey was a standout for the Sun, leading all scorers with 20 points, including six three-pointers. “My teammates have a lot of faith in me, and AT does a great job finding me,” Mabrey said of her performance from beyond the arc. DeWanna Bonner added 10 points and 11 rebounds, marking her 83rd playoff appearance—a new WNBA record.

Minnesota was led by 2024 KIA WNBA Defensive Player of the Year Napheesa Collier, who posted 19 points and 9 rebounds. Bridget Carleton chipped in with 17 points, and Alanna Smith had a strong defensive showing, blocking five shots.

Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve, named Coach and Executive of the Year on Sunday, will look to regroup her team for Game 2 on Tuesday as they aim to even the series before heading to Connecticut.

Born Marlon Williamson this date in 1962 in NYC, the DJ, producer, and record label owner known as Marley Marl is a trailblazer of Hip Hop’s ever-evolving sound, being one of the first to use sampling as a means to gather elements for a song.

Starting with his days as the DJ for WBLS’ Mr. Magic in the early 80s, Marley used that leverage to break new artists and eventually form his own group known as the legendary Juice Crew. Based in his Queensbridge Housing apartment, “Marley’s House” became an epicenter for many Hip Hop legends in the early stages of their career including Big Daddy Kane, Biz Markie, MC Shan, Kool G Rap, and the Queensbridge Queen herself, Roxanne Shante. Marley’s production credits go on for eons, however, some of his most memorable work includes  Craig G’s The Kingpin, Big Daddy Kane’s Long Live The Kane, Biz Markie’s Goin’ Off, Kool G Rap & DJ Polo’s Road to the Riches, MC Shan’s Down By Law and Born to Be Wild and Roxanne Shante’s only album Bad Sister.

The New York Liberty made a statement in Game 1 of the 2024 WNBA Semifinals, defeating the defending champion Las Vegas Aces 87-77 at home on Sunday. Nearly a year after the Aces ended the Liberty’s season by clinching back-to-back titles in the 2023 Finals, New York came out determined, led by stellar performances from Breanna Stewart, Sabrina Ionescu, and Jonquel Jones.

Stewart, who finished with 34 points, five rebounds, four assists, and two steals, was unstoppable from the start, putting up 20 points by halftime. “I wanted to come out and set the tone, be aggressive, and take what the defense was giving me,” Stewart said after the game. Her offensive dominance helped New York build an early double-digit lead, and they never looked back.

Ionescu added 21 points and five assists, while Jones contributed a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds, solidifying New York’s advantage over the Aces.

Reflecting on last year’s Finals loss, Stewart noted her growth since that defeat. “I’ve just kind of grown from it, had a lot of time to reflect on it—how I can be better, how to handle things collectively better. I don’t forget who I am and what I can do.”

The Liberty holds a 1-0 series lead as they aim to dethrone the Aces and move closer to their first WNBA Championship. Game 2 of the Semifinals is set for later this week in New York.

Houston rapper Maxo Kream is set to release his highly anticipated new album Personification on November 8th. Known for his raw lyricism and evolving artistry, Maxo has remained true to himself throughout his decade-long career. The album will be available on all digital platforms and vinyl via his own label, Stomp Down, and is currently available for pre-save.

Personification marks Maxo’s first full-length project since Weight of the World in 2021 and its 2022 deluxe edition. The album explores Maxo’s life and career through the lens of three distinct personas that have shaped his artistic journey. Trigga Maxo represents his early days as a gritty street rapper, characterized by hits like “Cell Boomin” and the #MAXO187 project. The second persona, Punken, named after Maxo’s childhood nickname and his 2018 album, reflects his growth into a more refined artist and storyteller. Previously, Maxo returned with his latest single, “Cracc Era,” enlisting friend and frequent collaborator Tyler, The Creator. Known for his gritty storytelling and dark soundscapes, Maxo’s two-stepping flow brings the underworld to life over a beat that channels Tyler’s horrorcore era. Tyler sets the tone with eerie synths and relentless bass, while Maxo delivers raw verses, reflecting on his days before rap: “Way before I did this rappin’, I was out here jackin’ n****s.”

One of the highlights on Beyoncé‘s Cowboy Carter album is her collaboration with Post Malone, “Levii’s Jeans,” in which she tells a lover that she’ll let them be in her Levi’s jeans, “so you can hug that ass all day long.” They say any press is good press, but this was great press for Levi’s, which has now enlisted Beyoncé for a new commercial that’s actually a re-creation of an old ad.

In “Launderette,” Beyoncé walks into a laundromat, takes off her jeans, and takes a seat in a white top and white underwear while waiting for the cycle to finish. It’s a nod to the famous “Launderette” ad from 1985, which was set to “I Heard It Through The Grapevine” by Marvin Gaye; the new one, as you might expect, is soundtracked by “Levii’s Jeans.”

AdWeek reports that the campaign was “brought to life by Levi’s agency of record TBWA/Chait/Day LA and Emmy Award-winning cinematographer Marcell Rév, who has already worked with Queen Bey as well as other artists including Miley Cyrus.” The Beyonce/Levi’s campaign will be targeted to major cities around the globe, including San Francisco, Chicago, New York, Atlanta, Paris, London, Berlin, and, of course, Houston.
