Drake Dodged A Bullet At Michael Rubin’s White Party Since DJ Didn’t Play Kendrick Lamar

Drake is in for a jump-scare whenever he’s going out now that Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” diss is a smash hit, but some crowds know how to read the room. Moreover, according to alleged sources who reportedly spoke to TMZ, every DJ at Michael Rubin’s White Party on Fourth of July (which Drizzy attended) did not play any of K.Dot’s music at the event. Apparently, one of the aux-masters was a friend of Travis Scott’s, and along with La Flame, Lil Wayne, Quavo, and other folks on OVO’s good side (for now…), they all seemed to have a blast. Even though nothing happened, we’re sure it would’ve been quite the moment if everyone looked at the Toronto superstar while they could hear “Wop, wop, wop, wop, wop!” in the background.

Of course, the same goes if Kendrick Lamar was, say, cruising around Los Angeles and he heard “Drop, drop, drop, drop” in the street. His feud with Drake has absolutely dominated hip-hop discourse this year, and he’s making sure that his rival doesn’t soon forget it. On the Fourth of July, the same day that this White Party went down, Kendrick dropped the “Not Like Us” music video. Talk about kicking someone while they’re down… or up, we guess, since we’re sure Michael Rubin and company were a welcome distraction.

Drake At Michael Rubin’s White Party

Regardless of those jokes, some pictures of Drake at the White Party this year raised some fans’ eyebrows. Many commented that it looks like he aged a couple of years in just days as a result of the Kendrick Lamar battle, which is honestly a tad ridiculous. Call it confirmation bias, reaching, or just plain hating, but perhaps this clowning would be less common if the “Wick Man” MC didn’t just lose in a rap beef in many’s eyes. Maybe it was the party that drained him, instead.

Meanwhile, even though die-hards like DJ Akademiks are doubting Drake’s comeback, it’s still far too soon to tell whether this Kendrick Lamar battle will really affect him. Let’s see what happens when a new album cycle starts up, and then we’ll have that conversation. For now, at least he knows that the aux is safe at any Michael Rubin event, or just any public setting he goes to. We’ll see what happens when someone inevitably dares to throw Mustard on the beat in the 6ix God’s vicinity.

Jay Worthy & Dam-Funk Drop Summer-Ready Single “Rich Today”

Last month, Jay Worthy and Dum-Funk teamed up to announce their upcoming collaborative album, Magic Hour. The eagerly anticipated project is currently slated for release on July 12, and to give listeners a taste of what’s to come, they’ve unveiled yet another single. “Rich Today,” which dropped last week, features Leven Kali and Polyester the Saint and arrives alongside a dreamy accompanying music video.

The laid-back, groovy track truly feels like an homage to the West Coast, boasting relaxed bars about cruising around in the summertime with next to nothing on your mind besides getting “rich.” This isn’t the first taste of the new album they’ve given fans as of late, however. “Rich Today” is in the same vein as a song they recently released alongside A-Trak, Ty Dolla $ign, Channel Tres, and DJ Quik late last month. The collab, “105 West,” arrived alongside a star-studded accompanying music video and is also expected to appear on Magic Hour.

They gave another nod to LA on “Westside” earlier this year, which also featured DRAM. What do you think of Jay Worthy and Dam-Funk’s new track featuring Leven Kali and Polyester the Saint? Will you be adding “Rich Today” to your summer playlist or not? Are you looking forward to the duo’s upcoming album, Magic Hour? Who else do you want to hear them collaborate with in the future? Share your thoughts in the comments section, and keep an eye on HNHH for more updates. Check out the new single down below.

Childish Gambino Previews His New Album With Foushee & Steve Lacy At NYC Listening Event

Childish Gambino’s new album (and multi-media project, as there’s a film involved), Bando Stone & The New World, is coming out on July 19, and fans couldn’t be more excited. Moreover, that’s especially the case thanks to a recent listening party he held in New York City to preview this new project and play some music from it. Donald Glover also tapped Steve Lacy and Fousheé to perform together, as it seems like they have a couple of collaborations on the highly anticipated LP. Either way, it made for an amazing show, and one that displayed the sheer variety and lushness that Bando Stone will presumably champion.

Furthermore, the single for this project, “Lithonia,” shows Childish Gambino moving in a more alt-rock and possibly emo-inspired direction, complete with blaring guitars, dramatic pianos, and a spotlit vocal performance. According to clips from this listening event, the album will also contain some hip-hop worship, funky passages, tender soul, electronic embellishments, and a lot of sharp and melodically serene songwriting. We’re sure that there’s even more in store, as this album comes after a pretty long wait. But what’s the fun in spoiling the surprises?

Childish Gambino, Fousheé & Steve Lacy Perform At Bando Stone Listening Party

Also, this is a very interesting rollout because it followed a curious but welcome reflection on Childish Gambino’s behalf of his past releases. The last album we got before Bando Stone was 2020’s 3.15.20, which he chose to revamp and re-release as the 2024 project Atavista. There were some notable changes and feature additions compared to the original version, plus some wholly unchanged aspects. It’s not really a common sighting in the mainstream or in the underground to handle releases in this way, so we’re glad that this experiment manifested.

Meanwhile, fans are ecstatic to hear about Childish Gambino’s new film soon, for which this new album will apparently be some sort of soundtrack. As with all things Donald Glover, he’s going to wear a lot of hats and make a whole media experience out of his creativity. You certainly won’t find us complaining, especially after how great much of this listening party material sounded. We’re all ready for Bando Stone & The New World, and we can’t wait to explore it.

Lil Skies Gets Candid About “PAIN” On New Single

It goes without saying that it’s been a rough couple of months for Lil Skies. At the beginning of June, the Pennsylvania-born performer was reportedly arrested in Chambersburg. He’s accused of failing to exchange insurance information with another driver after a car accident. Fortunately, it looks like he was quick to get back to work after the incident, as he recently unveiled his new single “Pain.”

As the name suggests, the track is about the hardships Lil Skies has run into throughout his life, and how they’ve impacted who is today. He details becoming fiercely self-reliant as a result of betrayal and believing in his own career, which he thinks has a greater purpose. The song features mellow, melancholy production and laid-back vocals. It also arrived alongside an accompanying music video, in which Lil Skies is seen singing in a room by himself, lying in a pile of cash, and more.

It stays true to the darker themes Lil Skies has been tapping into over the past few months, following tracks like “Runnin Thru The Fire,” “Death,” and more. So far, fans are enjoying the new track, and claiming that it reminds them of some of his older material that blew him up in the first place. What do you think of Lil Skies’ new track? What about its accompanying music video? Will you be adding “Pain” to your summer playlist or not? Share your thoughts in the comments section down below, and keep an eye on HNHH for more updates.

Busta Rhymes Previews Remix Of Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” At Essence Festival

Over the weekend, Busta Rhymes took the stage at the 2024 Essence Festival in New Orleans, where he dropped a major hint at what could be to come. As he finished up his set and prepared to walk offstage, he urged his DJ to play an apparent remix of Kendrick Lamar’s hit diss track “Not Like Us.” Busta Rhymes laid down some bars of his own on the reimagined version, and unsurprisingly, the crowd went wild.

The fun moment left listeners eager to hear more of the remix, though it’s unclear whether or not he plans to release it. Either way, they’re glad to see Busta get in on Kendrick and Drake’s lyrical battle, which has been one of the most talked about feuds of the year.

Busta Rhymes Gives His Fans An Exciting Surprise At The 2024 Essence Festival

While Busta Rhymes certainly appeared to be in good spirits upon hearing fans’ reactions to his apparent “Not Like Us” remix, he did express disappointment with the audience at another point in the show. Apparently, he spotted some attendees sitting down and filming on their phones, which he was not at all pleased with. He went off as a result, and the clip quickly began circulating online. “A-yo, f**k them camera phones, too. Let’s get back to interacting like humans. Put them weird-a** devices down,” he yelled. “I ain’t from that era. Them s**ts don’t control the soul. F**k your phone.”

The tense moment prompted a debate among social media users. While most think he had a good point, some accused him of going overboard, and inaccurately gauging his fans’ stamina. What do you think of Busta Rhymes previewing a possible “Not Like Us” remix during his recent performance at the 2024 Essence Festival in New Orleans? Are you looking forward to hearing the full version? Share your thoughts in the comments section down below, and keep an eye on HNHH for more updates.

DeMar DeRozan Got Welcomed By Kings Fans In Sacramento While ‘Not Like Us’ Played

The NBA is heading to Las Vegas for Summer League later this week, but before that, a few teams are participating in the California Classic Summer League in San Francisco and Sacramento. On Saturday night, a collection of Sacramento Kings players took on the Chinese National Team at Golden 1 Center, and at one point, the latest addition to the team’s roster showed up.

The Kings pulled off a sign-and-trade earlier in the evening to acquire DeMar DeRozan from the Chicago Bulls — the San Antonio Spurs were also involved in the deal. It had previously been reported that DeRozan was in town to meet with Sacramento’s decision makers, and ultimately, an arrangement got sorted out to bring DeRozan in as a running mate for De’Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis. And as an added bonus, because there were a ton of Kings fans in the arena to watch the team, DeRozan got to show up to a hero’s welcome, all while the Kendrick Lamar track “Not Like Us” played.

DeRozan joined Kings owner Vivek Ranadive, who presumably spent a ton of time talking to him throughout the day. And of course, the soundtrack couldn’t have been much better, as DeRozan appeared in the music video that Lamar dropped earlier this week and joined him on stage as he performed the song at The Pop Out last month.
