Today in Hip-Hop History: LL Cool J Dropped His ‘Bigger and Deffer'(B.A.D.) LP 37 Years Ago

llcoolj

On this date in 1987, LL’s Bigger And Deffer album was released via Def Jam/Columbia/CBS Records. As his second release, the critics expected the “sophomore jinx”, but received the exact opposite. In fact, B.A.D. was the album that catapulted Cool J to superstar status immediately following his cameo appearance as a crate carrying, up and coming “LL Kool J” in Krush Groove. At the time, LL also had two DJs; DJ Cut Creator and West Coast super-producer DJ Bobcat.

Recorded at the legendary Chung King Studios and produced by DJ Pooh and L.A. Posse, Bigger And Deffer contained two of LL’s biggest singles to date; “I’m Bad” and the feminine driven “I Need Love”. This was the first successful Hip Hop love song, however, it set the precedent for many more to follow.

The album made our Top 100 Best Rap Albums list while selling over 3 million copies here in the U.S. Salute to Uncle L, DJs Cut Creator and Bobcat, E Love, and the whole Def Jam team for this classic!

Kendrick Lamar’s “euphoria” Has Sold Over 1 Million Units in the U.S.

Kendrick Lamar Headlines Lollapalooza's 2023 Lineup

Kendrick Lamar continues to have a good few months in sales. His “Euphoria” disco track has officially sold one million units. According to ChartData, this is Lamar’s third song in 2024 to be platinum eligible, following “Like That” and “Not Like Us.”

In recent news, Spotify has unveiled the 100 Greatest Hip-Hop Songs of the streaming era, from 2015 to the present, as part of its Spotify CLASSICS catalog program. Topping the list is Kendrick Lamar’s influential track “Alright.”

The newest iteration of Spotify CLASSICS, a celebration of catalog music chosen by Spotify’s North American editorial team, highlights major hits such as Drake’s “God’s Plan,” Future’s “Mask Off,” Kendrick Lamar’s “Humble,” and “WAP” by Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion.

Spotify’s hip-hop editorial team undertook the ambitious task of reviewing thousands of songs to compile this definitive list. Unlike other rankings, Spotify CLASSICS is entirely qualitative, focusing on the quality, impact, replay value, influence, and cultural significance of each track. The list reflects the editors’ music and cultural expertise, rather than being driven by streaming data, meaning that massive streaming numbers were not a prerequisite for inclusion.

Mike Tyson Gives Update on Health Ahead of Jake Paul Fight: ‘Now Feeling 100%’

Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson Boxing Match Press Conference

After an inflight medical episode, Mike Tyson updated his condition via X. He is still ready to fight Jake Paul.

“Now feeling 100%,” Tyson wrote, “even though I don’t need to be to beat Jake Paul.”

The YouTuber-turned-boxer recently reassured fans that his upcoming fight with Mike Tyson is still on, despite Tyson’s recent health scare. The 27-year-old YouTuber-turned-boxer took to social media on Monday to address rumors of a cancellation following Tyson’s medical emergency over the weekend.

Here’s what Paul posted “You love to make s–t up before knowing the facts for clicks / likes. Nothing changed #PaulTyson,” Paul wrote on X.

Get this: Tyson, 57, experienced nausea and dizziness due to an ulcer flare-up while on a flight from Miami to Los Angeles. His representative told Page Six that Tyson “became nauseous and dizzy due to an ulcer flare-up 30 minutes before landing.” They added that Tyson is “appreciative to the medical staff that were there to help him” and clarified that he is “doing great.”

The sanctioned match between Tyson and Paul is set to broadcast live on Netflix, which is the biggest streamer in the world, from AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on July 20. Tyson expressed enthusiasm for the fight, calling it a “no-brainer” at a press conference earlier this month. “He’s the new up-and-coming guy on the scene. I like shaking the sports world to its core, and I’m doing that now. It’s just something I want to do,” Tyson explained.

Paul also stated the significance of their fight, stating, “This is quite literally the biggest fight of the 21st century.” He emphasized the match’s global reach, adding, “Because of the fact that it’s Mike Tyson versus me, but also the fact that it’s in 700 million households.”

Iron Mike, who became the youngest heavyweight champion in 1986 by defeating Trevor Berbick, has an impressive 50-6-2 record with 44 knockouts. In contrast, Paul holds a 9-1 record with six knockouts. Despite his relative inexperience, Paul remains confident. “I’m a natural-born heavyweight,” he declared. “I’m gonna show Mike who has more power. I think he’s underestimating me, I think everyone else is underestimating me.”

Jennifer Lopez Vegas Residency in Jeopardy After Under Performing Tour

Jennifer Lopez Unveils "Can't Get Enough" Single and Album in Global Streaming Event

Jennifer Lopez may be watching $90 million escape her grasp. According to Page Six, MGM is watching the performance of Lopez’s ticket sales nationwide, leading to questions regarding a 90-show residency she agreed to at MGM Grand.

An insider says, “MGM is watching her not doing well on the road. They are very nervous. It’s pretty rare you have a poor tour and then go to Vegas.”

An alternative is believed to be less money for fewer dates.

In March, Jennifer Lopez slashed shows from her This Is Me… Now tour.

According to Rolling Stone, the quiet cancellation has removed stops in Cleveland, Nashville, Raleigh, Atlanta, Tampa, New Orleans, and Houston scheduled for late August. No reason for the canceled dates was provided.

On Ticketmaster, a message reads: “Unfortunately, the Event Organizer has had to cancel your event. No action is required to obtain a refund.”

According to EW, a “logistical issue through the promoter” is the cause for cancellation.

In February, Jennifer Lopez expanded her highly anticipated return to the touring stage with additional performances in Miami, Toronto, and New York City as part of This Is Me…Now The Tour. After a five-year hiatus, Lopez is making a triumphant comeback following her immensely successful 2019 tour, grossing over $50 million with sold-out venues nationwide.

Produced by Live Nation, the 37-city tour kicks off on June 26 in Orlando, FL, at Kia Center, making stops across North America before concluding in Houston, TX, on August 31 at Toyota Center. This Is Me…Now The Tour will feature Lopez’s chart-topping hits spanning her illustrious career, alongside tracks from her latest album.

The tour coincides with the global release of Lopez’s album This Is Me…Now and Amazon Original This Is Me…Now: A Love Story on Feb. 16th, along with the documentary The Greatest Love Story Never Told, released on Prime Video on February 27th.

Drake may be out of his beef with Kendrick Lamar for now, but his next battle is with ghostwriting allegations. On Memorial Day, a reference track leak of Vory performing “Mob Ties” hit the net.

Meanwhile, Drake has connected with his Honestly, Nevermind collaborator Gordo and is teasing new music. “You guys ready for summer 2024…” Gordo wrote on his social media post.

Drake has dropped his first post-beef bars. And guess what? They are over the BBLDrizzy beat.

Drake appears on Sexyy Red’s “U My Everything” single, and the beat transitions into Metro Boomin’s diss beat. Flipping it in his favor, Drake raps, “BBL Drizzy, they want a new body, they ask me for it.”

The “U My Everything” single can be found on Sexyy Red’s mixtape, In Sexyy We Trust, released today via Rebel/gamma. Executively produced by Tay Keith and Drumatized, the mixtape features the Billboard-charting hit “Get It Sexyy” and includes collaborations with Drake, Lil Baby, Mike WiLL Made-It, and VonOff1700.
