H.E.R. Files Lawsuit to Be Released From Her Label, MBK Entertainment

H.E.R. wants out of her record contract.

The Grammy-winning singer-songwriter is suing MBK Entertainment, the label owned by her longtime manager Jeff Robinson. According to legal documents, filed in Los Angeles on Thursday and obtained by The Blast, H.E.R. is suing for declaratory relief and violation of the business and professions code and is seeking release from her contract with MBK.

H.E.R., whose real name is Gabriella Sarmiento Wilson, signed with Robinson in 2011, when she was 14 years old. The recording contract made H.E.R. an “exclusive employee” for an “initial period” which “ended the later of 15 months after May 19, 2011, or 12 months after the commercial release in the United States of Wilson’s first album under the contract, and up to five additional Option Periods of more than one year each.”

She alleges that MBK has “significantly limited” her “employment rights” and that she “has not been free to provide her recording services except as permitted or dictated by MBK.” She also claims that MBK “has exclusively owned the right to exploit her name and likeness for her recordings,” and that Robinson fired the law firm that represented her and used his own lawyers to represent Wilson in contract negotiations.

H.E.R. says the contract should have been up on May 18, 2019 since she signed it in 2011. California has a seven-year contract maximum and H.E.R. is a resident of the state, so she should be free from her previous contract with MBK.

“Wilson’s seven years have run,” the lawsuit states. “MBK’s attempts to thwart this important and fundamental California public policy should not be condoned.”

H.E.R.’s albums have all been released under MBK and distributed by RCA Records. It is unclear whether the dispute extends to her management contract with Robinson, who previously managed Alicia Keys.

Shonda Rhimes Launches Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Programs at Netflix

Shonda Rhimes Ended 15-Year Relationship With ABC Over Disneyland Pass

After extending their partnership last summer, Netflix and accomplished producer Shonda Rhimes broaden their commitment with the launch of new inclusive programs for diversity, equity, inclusion, access initiatives and opportunities. The new programs are called The Producers Inclusion Initiative and The Ladder, which both will be supported by Netflix’s Fund for Creative Equity.

The programs will allow graduates to be considered for job consideration on Shondaland and other Netflix productions. The Producers Inclusion Initiative is specifically designed as a nine-week virtual program to train indie producers, unit production managers, supervisors and first assistant directors, who come from those historically underrepresented communities. The program’s participants will learn from executives and key production department heads from Netflix, Shondaland and elsewhere in the industry with the express goal of minting qualified line producers for the studio system. In addition to monthly stipends while in the program, graduates will connect with folks at the two companies and others about potential gigs or other career development opportunities.

The Ladder, for its part, is set up to provide opportunities for people from marginalized groups who are looking to gain the kind of on-set experience and training that’s key to success in the film and TV business. Like the Inclusion Initiative, the Ladder participants will be paid during their time in the program, which will also transport those taking part from central points around London.

Shondaland’s Head of Production Sara Fischer had this to say on the new programs and opportunities: “At our core, Shondaland is a company dedicated to championing opportunities for underrepresented communities both on and off the screen. We have made incredible strides with ensuring women are represented in our productions and I’m excited to expand our efforts and see real results with all marginalized groups. Our partnership with Netflix has allowed us to create these two new incredible programs that have already led to palpable changes in our industry. I am extremely proud to be a part of history as we look forward to greater representation on set.”

Shonda Rhimes is one of the most high-profile and commercially successful showrunners in the business.

rob kardashian blac chyna settlement

Blac Chyna’s “revenge porn” lawsuit against Rob Kardashian, 35,  will no longer be going to trial. The former couple reached an agreement just before jury selection was set to begin Monday.

Potential jurors were sent home from the courthouse in Los Angeles after the parties informed the judge that they had agreed to a settlement.

The exact details of the settlement remain unclear. It comes just days after it was reported that the case would proceed because the couple was unable to come to an agreement.

A source confirmed to Rolling Stone the case now will not be going forward. Adding that the ex-couple wanted to resolve the issue for the sake of their 5-year-old daughter, Dream Kardashian.

In 2017, Blac Chyna, 34, filed a suit against Kardashian after he allegedly posted private nude photos of her on Instagram.

The Lashed Cosmetics founder claims Rob’s “revenge porn rant” was a form of domestic abuse and his actions damaged her brand.

Chyna obtained a restraining order against the Arthur George designer after he leaked explicit images of her on social media. Rob Kardashian has denied the claims.
