Pharrell To Open School For Low-Income Families In Virginia

Pharrell has proven time and time again his commitment to giving back. While the multi-hyphenate has already extended his reach into the mogul world by adding different entities to his portfolio, his green thumb has remained intact in many of his other endeavors has remained intact.

On Saturday (June 12), the Grammy-winner announced plans to open a group of small private schools for low-income families. The first of these schools will be in Norfolk and will open this fall. Students in the city in grades three through five will be eligible to attend the school, with an end goal of expanding on his equity-focused non-profit’s established summer program for students.

“If the system is fixed and unfair, then it needs to be broken,” said Pharrell of the endeavor in a press release. “We don’t want lockstep learning where so many kids fall behind; we want bespoke learning designed for each child, where the things that make a child different are the same things that will make a child rise up and take flight.”

Dubbed Yellowhab, the school will be completely tuition-free for at least the first year of running. The costs of attendance are set to be covered by philanthropic supporters. One of the school’s earliest donors was the Walton Family Foundation, which has already spent millions over the last two decades to support and promote charter schools.

According to Executive Director Mike McGalliard, the school currently had no plans to make the school a public charter. “We are very clear here that we’re not taking away from the city or the district. We want to be additive and not put any kind of onerous, intrusive impact on those institutions,” explained McGalliard. “It’s very important that we not disrupt that revenue stream.”

Norfolk Mayor Kenny Alexander praised the work Williams’ nonprofit has done, adding that he was looking forward to seeing what else he’ll be able to accomplish. “What happened was breaking the cycle of intergenerational poverty,” Alexander said. “To see that students had gone on to university and some of the Ivy League schools was just very impressive. That’s what we witnessed there.”

The school will initially enroll 40 and 50 students and will follow a skill-level format rather than traditional grade-level cohorts. Families can apply for admission at www.teamyellow.org/yellowhab and will be selected through a lottery process.

Yellowhab will officially open its doors on September 7th.

Lonzo Ball Reveals His Worst Moment In Basketball

Lonzo Ball has been through a lot over the course of his young career and he hasn’t been shy to speak about some of the struggles that have come with it all. Having started his career with the Los Angeles Lakers, there were a lot of expectations placed on Lonzo, especially with his father LaVar trying to call much of the shots. Eventually, LaVar backed off a bit and since then, Lonzo has been able to ease into his role with his new team, the New Orleans Pelicans.

Recently, Ball appeared on the Who’s Interviewing Who show where he spoke candidly about his career and the hurdles he has faced. Ball admitted that the lowest point for him actually came in high school after his dad told him he couldn’t play AAU. After being cut from a high-level team, Lonzo knew he needed to step things up.

“My lowest moment in basketball came after my freshman year in high school,” Ball said via Lonzo Wire. “My pops never let me play AAU or travel ball or nothing like that so I was just local kid nobody really knew about. But I got an invitation to the USA camp to make the team and I ended up getting cut and that kind of shaped my whole high school career from that because I was like ‘There’s no way I’m not one of the best 15 players in my class.’ I went from not even being ranked to I think I made it to No. 2 by the time I was a senior. It just gave me motivation just to chase all the guys in front of me that people thought were better than me.”

This off-season, Lonzo is a free agent, and he will have yet another big decision in front of him. While he hasn’t let on as to where he wants to go, it seems like the player will be highly-sought after.

Lil Baby Celebrates Gunna’s Birthday With A Shoebox Full Of Cash

Lil Baby and Gunna have remained good friends over the years as they came up in Atlanta together as disciples of Young Thug. They have made a plethora of songs together and even have a joint project. With this in mind, it should be no surprise that the two are always eager to celebrate each other’s birthdays, as their friendship runs deep.

On Monday, June 14th, Gunna will be turning 28 years old which means he is just two years away from a huge milestone. To celebrate the occasion, Gunna took to the club with his closest friends, and as you can imagine, Lil Baby was right there by his side. As for birthday gifts, Baby kept things simple as he pulled up with a shoebox full of wads of cash. It was an Air Jordan box, and Gunna seemed to be pretty content with his new riches.

It’s unknown how much money Lil Baby gave to Gunna although it’s probably more than what some people will make over the course of two years. At the end of the day, Lil Baby is a multi-platinum artist, and he can afford to treat his friends in such a manner.

As for Gunna, we hope he has a wonderful birthday tomorrow. Based on last night, it seems like the festivities have gotten off to a solid start.

Quavo Said He Planned To Make A Joint Album With Pop Smoke Before His Death

Migos made their grand return on Friday with their fourth album, Culture III. The project arrived as a 19-track effort with contributions highlighted by Drake, Cardi B, Future, DaBaby, Justin Bieber, Polo G and Juice WRLD. It’s also the Atlanta trio’s first project together since their 2018’s Culture II. Social media opinions of the new album seemingly prove that the rap group has returned to the excellence they displayed earlier in their career with projects like No Label II and Culture. As fans continue to enjoy the new project, Quavo recently revealed another project that sadly never came to fruition between himself and another artist.

During an interview on Los Angeles’ Real 92.3, Quavo spoke about adding posthumous features from Pop Smoke and Juice WRLD on Culture III, revealing that he actually hoped to make a full album with the former before his death.

“That was important, know what I’m saying,” he said. “I had a relationship with Pop Smoke, we had a relationship with Pop Smoke, and it was just, important. We had so many records, me and him was bout to make an album. So I just felt like I had to put Pop on there.”

He added, “Rest in Peace to my dawg Pop, we just made so much good music. Us on a New York drill beat is just like, magic.”

Pop Smoke and Juice WRLD appear on “Light It Up” and “Antisocial,” respectively, on Culture III. While it was the Migos’ first official collaboration with the two rappers, Quavo previously worked with Pop Smoke on “Aim For The Moon,” “Snitching” and “West Coast Sh*t” from the rapper’s posthumous album, Shoot For The Stars, Aim For The Moon.

Drake Confirms ‘Certified Lover Boy’ Will Arrive By The End Of The Summer

Drake’s upcoming sixth album, Certified Lover Boy, is by far the most anticipated album of 2021. However, it’s also a project that fans should’ve already had in their possession if things went according to plan. Back in October, the rapper announced that the album would arrive in January, but he was later forced to delay the project after he had to take time away from working on it in order to rehab from knee surgery.

Since then, the rapper has continued work on Certified Lover Boy without sharing a new release date for it. Thankfully, during a recent interview, Drake revealed when fans can expect the album.

In a sit-down during the URLTV battle rap league’s NOMEXI event, Drake was asked when Certified Lover Boy arrived. When interviewers tried to get a specific release date out of him, the rapper kept things tight-lipped. However, when an off-screen guest asked if the album would be here by the end of the summer, Drake replied, “Oh yeah, I’ll be there. My album will be out by then.”

This comes after Akademiks previously reported that Certified Lover Boy would be released by the end of April. Obviously, that month came and went without the album’s release, but Drake’s biggest supporters should be happy to hear that the project will be in their hands within the next few months.

You can watch a clip of the conversation above.
