Nearly All-White Jury Selected In The Trial For Ahmaud Arbery’s Murder

11 white people and one Black man — that’s the racial makeup of the jury selected for the trial of Ahmaud Arbery’s murder, approved by Glynn County Superior Court Judge Timothy R. Walmsley last Wednesday.

Early 2020, 25-year-old Ahmaud Arbery was murdered at the hands of three white co-conspirers while he was out jogging in his suburban Georgia neighborhood. Video of Arbery’s death was leaked not long after George Floyd was murdered by a police officer in Minneapolis and right before Breonna Taylor was murdered by Louisville police. The world was enraged, taking the movement for Black lives, abolition, and anti-racism to an international stage.

Now, more than a year after Arbery’s death, the opening statements in the trial of Travis McMichael, his father Gregory, and their neighbor William Bryan who are accused of killing Arbery has just begun. The outcome of the jury selection process has demonstrated nothing more than an ongoing pattern in the racist legacy of the American justice system. 14-year-old Emmett Till’s murderers were acquitted at the hands of an all-white jury back in 1955. 17-year-old Trayvon Martin’s murderer was acquitted at the hands of a predominantly-white jury (five of six total jurors being white) in 2013. Racial discrimination in the jury selection process is a well-studied, ongoing issue.

According to reports verified by the New York Times, Linda Dunikoski, a special prosecutor from the Cobb County District Attorney’s Office, attempted to challenge the defense attorneys’ removal of eight potential Black jurors, referencing a Supreme Court ruling that specifically prohibits racial discrimination in the selection of jurors.

To this, Judge Timothy R. Walmsley admitted that “quite a few African American jurors were excused through peremptory strikes executed by the defense” and acknowledged “intentional discrimination in the panel.” Yet, he eventually ruled that for each of the eight potential jurors, the defense had provided a “legitimate, nondiscriminatory, clear, reasonably specific, and related” reason for why the juror could not be seated.

“This has been the strangest jury selection process I have ever seen,” Lee Merritt, a lawyer for the Arbery family, has commented. “There’s very few people who wouldn’t have heard about this case. Most have developed an opinion about the case, so I understand that the attorneys, in general, will have some questions that we’re not used to.” However, he proceeded to describe that the defense lawyers were “badgering” potential jurors in their screening.

It should be noted that the jury selection process for the trial for Ahmaud Arbery’s murder lasted two and a half weeks, compared to the jury selection process leading up to the trial of Kyle Rittenhouse, who murdered two men and injured another with a firearm at a Wisconsin protest last summer. It took one day to seat that jury.

Bradley Beal Goes Off On Ted Cruz For Recent Co-Sign

Earlier this season, numerous NBA players came out and said that they would not be taking the vaccine against COVID-19. One such player was Bradley Beal of the Washington Wizards. He was scrutinized for his decision, although there were some people in the political realm who stood by his choice.

One such person was none other than Ted Cruz who tried to use Beal’s stand for political points. Cruz did the same thing for Kyrie Irving, Jonathan Isaac, and even Andrew Wiggins. At one point, Cruz even showed solidarity with LeBron James.

In a recent interview with the Washington Post, Beal completely denounced Cruz’s co-sign saying that the politician completely twisted what he was trying to say. Beal has no interest in aligning with Cruz, and he made sure to let the Texas senator know about it.

“Don’t attach me to that,” Beal said. “Because that’s not what I was trying to do. I’m not sitting here advocating for people not to get it. … I’ve never met you, I don’t talk to you, and I don’t support you or anything you do. That’s a little weird. That’s why I don’t like social media. Ted, you know damn well I ain’t rockin’ with you. You’re not going to get no cool points if that’s what you’re in it for.”

Needless to say, Cruz’s support for Beal has certainly backfired on him. Simply put, Beal is advocating for personal choice, and he would never tell someone not to get vaccinated if that’s what’s best for them.

Roddy Ricch Will Donate His Payment From Performing At Astroworld To The Families Of Those Who Died There

The tragic events that occurred at the 2021 Astroworld Festival this past weekend have the music industry in complete shock. Eight attendees died and hundreds more were injured in a night gone wrong. The incident occurred during Travis Scott’s solo set, which was to close the first of two nights at Astroworld. What happened left the rapper “absolutely devastated,” as he revealed in a statement the following morning, adding, “My prayers go out to the families and all those impacted by what happened at Astroworld Festival.” Now, Roddy Ricch, who also performed at the festival, is also taking steps to help the families of those who died.

In a post to his Instagram Story, Ricch shared his plan to help. “Please have the families of those who we lost yesterday reach out to @shawnholiday,” he wrote. “I’ll b donating my new compensation to the families of this incident. #Pray4Houston.”

Roddy’s announcement comes after Travis Scott shared a second statement about the Astroworld tragedy. “I just want to send out prayers to the ones that was lost last night,” he said in part in a video shared to his Instagram Story. He later added, “I’m honestly just devastated. I could never imagine anything like this happening… Love you all.”

Roddy Ricch is a Warner Music artist. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

‘SNL’ Tried To Figure Out Why On Earth Ice Cube Won’t Get Vaccinated

Last week, it was revealed that Ice Cube is not vaccinated. And he has no intention of doing so. He even walked away from a comedy movie, Oh Hell No, opposite Jack Black, which would have netted him both $9 million and a winter shoot in Hawaii. What is he thinking? On this weekend’s Kieran Culkin-hosted SNL, the show’s writing room hazarded a guess as to why.

During Weekend Update, Keenan Thompson swung by as the rap legend and movie star to explain to co-anchor Michael Che why on earth he, like Emilio Estevez, is turning down easy money and paid vacations by refusing to take an FDA-approved vaccine to protect himself from a highly transmissible and deadly virus.

“Hey look, man. I’d just rather be myself than take that vaccine, like you other three billion bozos,” Thompson’s Cube replied. When Che pointed out that he’d “lost” a good gig, Cube disagreed. “Not my loss, your loss. Oh Hell No was going to feature the greatest comedy duo of all time: Ice Cube, Jack Black,” he said. “The comedy chemistry, man. You know what I’m saying?”

He then rattled off a list of all the movies we won’t be getting because Cube won’t take some world-saving medication, from a fourth Barbershop, to a Friday prequel (Thursday, natch), to an M. Night Shyamalan twist-a-thon called Uh Oh, Twist Comin’, which has its own novel twist.

Throughout, Thompson’s Cube avoids the question: Why won’t he get vaccinated. But Che had a theory. “So you’re scared of needles, right?” he asked him, to which Cube replied with a sheepish affirmative.

You can watch the sketch in the video above.

Coi Leray’s Kung-Fu Dance Moves From Her Rolling Loud Set Are Prompting All Kinds Of Reactions

It’s been a week since Rolling Loud New York wrapped up for another season, but hip-hop heads everywhere are still catching up on the many performances that they may have missed. One artist in particular, Coi Leray, has been trending on Twitter for her unique efforts to entertain her audience.

In a clip, the “Big Purr” singer can be seen performing her hit track while wearing nipple covers, a harness, a cropped black puffer jacket, and some utility pants. After delivering a quick intro, Leray and the others on stage with her launched into a routine that looked like something straight out of a kung-fu flick.

“LMFAO,” a Twitter user captioned the clip, which has since been seen over a million times. The 24-year-old star even saw the video herself, and decided to respond. “Y’all wanna see bitches shake [their] ass in ballerina outfits all day. Big trend setter for life” Leray tweeted.

Thousands of others have retweeted the visual, giving their take on Leray’s performance. “This better than y’all faves standing around doing nothing for 20 songs,” one person wrote, defending the artist. “This what Kingdom Hearts looks like to outsiders lmao,” someone else joked.

Rolling Loud NY was certainly one for the books. Patrons received plenty of surprises from headlining artists, and one of the biggest headlines to come from the event was news of Fetty Wap’s arrest, which you can read more about here.

Jake Paul Continues To Send Shots At Zayn Malik

Jake Paul has been known to be extraordinarily petty in the media, and he doesn’t care who he offends in the process. This was certainly true just last week as Paul inserted himself in the situation between Zayn Malik and Yolanda Hadid. The former One Direction star pled no contest over a case in which he was accused of pushing Yolanda Hadid into a dresser. Since that time, he and Gigi Hadid have decided to take a break, and the singer is currently going through anger management courses.

Paul once got into it with Zayn at a boxing match, and since then, he has held a grudge. It’s what ultimately led to him sending shots at Zayn just last week, much to the chagrin of Zayn and Gigi’s biggest fans. Now, however, Paul is continuing his assault on the star with even more public comments.

Yesterday, Paul was in Las Vegas to promote his upcoming fight against Tommy Fury, and when approached by TMZ, he decided to unleash some demeaning comments about Zayn. “He’s a f***ing lunatic. The guy’s a complete asshole,” Paul said. He then went on to say that Malik is facing some negative consequences and that he deserves every single one of them. Needless to say, Paul is being quite harsh about the situation.

This is the typical Paul way, and it is certainly a way to sell tickets for a fight that many believe could lead to his first-ever loss. Let us know who you think will win, in the comments below.

Until things went south, the festival was filled with surprises. Scott launched the festival with an incredible line-up including SZA, Lil Baby and more. However, there were a number of special guests that weren’t listed on the bill including Drake and Roddy Ricch. The latter of which took to Instagram after authorities confirmed the number of victims to offer his aid to the families affected.

“please have the families of those who we lost yesterday reach out to @shawnholiday,” Ricch wrote on his Instagram story. “I’ll b donating my net compensation to the families of this incident. #Pray4Houston.”

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner confirmed details about the victims on Saturday. He said that the youngest victim was 14-years-old. Another victim was 16 while another two were 21-years-old. Two other victims were 23 and the oldest casualty was 27. Houston Fire Chief Samuel Peña said “the crowd began to compress toward the front of the stage” around 9:30 p.m., leading to mass panic.

We’ll keep you posted on anymore updates regarding Astroworld Festival. Check out Roddy Ricch’s post below.
