Nicki Minaj Reacts To Eve’s “Groundbreaking” Admission About Working With Her On “Barbershop”

Eve had revealed that she gained a newfound respect for Minaj while the two collaborated on Barbershop: The Next Cut. In response, Minaj labeled the revelations from her memoir, “groundbreaking.”

She wrote: “The level of grace; the level of emotional & spiritual maturity it takes to be this vulnerable & transparent is a sign of TRUE peace, happiness, fulfillment, & mastery of self. I always say that I think accountability is the sexiest trait a person can have.” From there, she reflected on being a fan of Eve’s work since she was a young kid in New York City.

Minaj also admitted she was “so nervous” working with Eve on Barbershop: The Next Cut and thought that the iconic rapper didn’t like her. “I was so nervous coming onto that movie set every day,” she recalled. “You looked like a pro & I admired that so much. Thank you for trying to not do to me what was done to you. Women feel so much pressure to compete & it’s a shame b/c we usually have so much in common & could rlly benefit from one another just as human beings. We all share so many of the same experiences as artists, wives, moms, ups & downs, anxiety, etc. I remember telling a friend of mine that I didn’t think you liked me after our first day on set together. but you know something crazy? I swear, I KNEW that YOU could tell deep down inside that I really liked YOU. So you went easy on me.”

Eve Reveals How Nicki Minaj Earned Her “Respect” By Starring In “Barbershop”

Eve says that she expected to resent Nicki Minaj after she was cast alongside her in the film, Barbershop: The Next Cut, in 2016. Reflecting on the experience in her new memoir, Who’s That Girl, Eve explained that she ended up gaining “respect” for the Pink Friday 2 rapper.

“I’ve lived through what happens when women project their own insecurities onto other women,” Eve said, as caught by The Neighborhood Talk. “It happened at the start of my career and continued in waves as my fame grew. I wasn’t going to be that woman to someone else, but in order to do that, I had to physically and mentally prepare myself … Nicki and I were actually fine on set. We got along well and shot our 1scenes together with no problems. It was nothing like what I had expected, but again, I am thankful that I prepared myself for it.”

She continued: “I’d see her writing songs on her bus in between takes, hurrying off set to go hit some show dates over the weekend and then come right back on set for these twelve-to-sixteen-hour shoots, all while trying to hold together her personal life and her relationship. It was at that moment that I didn’t envy her, and I kind of wanted to give her a hug. I thought I was going to resent her, and really all I felt was compassion. I remembered being that person, the girl who felt like she had to do it all. The girl who was pressured to do it all, because it was all eyes on her. Instead of feeling insecure around Nicki, I started to sympathize with her”

Eve Clarifies JAY-Z’s Alleged Controversial Comment About Female Rappers

Eve says that her comments on JAY-Z telling her that female rappers “don’t really do that well” from her memoir, Who’s That Girl?, are being misconstrued. She had recalled the legendary rapper making the remark as a warning to her back in 1999 ahead of the release of her debut album, Let There Be Eve…Ruff Ryders’ First Lady. She provided more context to the conversation during an appearance on The Breakfast Club on Tuesday.

“That was one of those things we were like, ‘Do we put that in?’ Because you know how people get,” she explained. “It was nothing bad about that. It was one of those things where it was a very amazing phone call that I needed.” She continued: “That was one of those I always felt like I was the underdog anyway. He wasn’t saying it out of malice or mean. It was facts, really. But I was like, eh, OK, let me see. I’ma show you. It’s all good. And it went on to be fine. Like I say in the book, we all have that person.”

Eve Gets Candid About Life & Career In “Who’s That Girl” Memoir

Get ready to learn more about E-V-E now that the femcee icon is telling it all in her upcoming memoir. Earlier today (February 8), Philadelphia’s Finest shared that her memoir, Who’s That Girl?, would arrive this Fall. Eve famously catapulted into stardom in the 1990s as the First Lady of Ruff Ryders, a title that also holds a spot in her debut album’s name. Still, her accomplishments would push her out of America’s East Coast and in front of a global audience.

The story of Eve’s rise has been well-documented in interviews and documentaries. Yet, fans will soon receive a more reflective perspective from the rapper, herself. “I’m excited for people to get to know me on a deeper level,” Eve stated. “This story is decades in the making.” Further, famed Hip Hop author Kathy Iandoli linked with Eve to round out the memoir, ensuring her story would also be told with cultural sensitivity.

Eve Steps Into Another Industry With Her Memoir

A significant part of Eve’s story is her success in a music genre led and dominated by men. According to PEOPLE, Eve promises to dig deep and reveal details regarding her interactions with many of her heavy-hitting peers. Eve will also deliver memories surrounding her biggest records, controversies about her high-profile romances, and navigating a challenging music industry. She’ll also dive into her path to motherhood—one that wasn’t always easy but was worth it. In early 2022, Eve and her husband, Maxmillion Cooper, welcomed a son named Wilde Wolf. It was Eve’s first child.

We also can’t forget Eve’s contributions outside of music. The raptress climbed the Billboard charts with tracks like “Let Me Blow Ya Mind” alongside Gwen Stefani, but her hits aren’t her only achievements in entertainment. She’s worked as a talk show host, starred in her own TV series, and has been featured in over a dozen films. Although we haven’t received a full-length studio album since 2013’s Lip Lock, fans were treated when Eve joined Trina for an unforgettable Verzuz in 2021.

Make sure to pick up your copy of Who’s That Girl? when it hits shelves on September 17.
