ScHoolboy Q “Blue Lips” Review

ScHoolboy Q is in his Pablo era. He says as much on the Freddie Gibbs-assisted, “oHio” from his latest album, Blue Lips. “Lookin’ at my life, think he Pablo/ Y’all poor,” he raps on the hook. Pablo Escobar might be a played-out reference at this point, especially as a hyperbolic benchmark of power and wealth. But ScHoolboy Q has a way of skewing the norm into a distinct portrayal of his growth and by extension, how the world around him has evolved. In this particular instance, it’s less to do with the accumulation of wealth but rather, what it’s afforded him: a sense of tranquility. As a result, ScHoolBoy Q delivers one of his strongest bodies of work with Blue Lips.

The 18-song album contains everything that CrasH Talk lacked – personality, depth, and a sense of purpose. At a time when the music industry was in a major overhaul as streaming continued dominating and platforms like Triller and TikTok directed the algorithm, ScHoolboy Q found himself trying to figure how where he fit into the puzzle. He explained to Zane Lowe that CrasH Talk captured his life after the success. In a lot of ways, it felt like a long-delayed sophomore slump in his career.

Fevered Reflections & Realizations

Blue Lips often feels like a volatile journey with unexpected twists and turns, thanks to the excellent sequencing. Beat switches and song transitions can often feel abrupt but the abrasiveness accentuates each moment. Through this, Q’s range takes heed uninterrupted. “THank God 4 Me,” produced by Kal Banx and initially teased during the producer’s Boiler Room set, opens up with a warm, tranquil flute, accented by gentle guitar strings before switching gears entirely into an abrasive banger that surrounds self-love in a way that only Q could deliver. It’s a commonality across the album that initially feels like jumbled concepts thrown into a blender. There’s a method to the chaos that lets the cohesion unfold organically, especially in ScHoolboy’s delivery. Q compartmentalizes each flow into concentrated moments across the album. It makes each sonic shift, each flow hit harder than the last.

“Love Birds,” for instance, finds Lance Skiiwalker reflecting on the shortcomings of a relationship but Q bursts through with debaucherous brags about a “house full of whores.” Then, there are songs like “Foux” with Ab-Soul. Over fevered jazz percussion, the two deliver another successor to the “Druggies Wit Hoes” series that deviates further from the hedonistic drug-fueled sexcapades that he and Ab-Soul once indulged in. Instead, “Foux” focuses on a void in their lives that can’t be fixed by copious amounts of substances, even with strides in their personal and professional careers.

Finding Hope

The concept of embracing change appears across the album, largely in juxtaposition with pivotal life moments that shaped him. However, the ultimate takeaway is that his worth was never rooted in material possessions but rather, the purity of his intentions. Even the moments where he’s bragging about Presidential Rolexes or foreign cars aren’t necessarily flexes. They are reminders of where it all began and the strides he’s made. It’s a noticeable shift from his mindset on his early albums which felt clouded by despondence.

But on Blue Lips, an album that arrives a decade after his major label debut Oxymoron, ScHoolboy Q finds a sense of hope that only came as he became more removed from the streets. Songs like “Blue Slides” and “Cooties,” specifically, allow a heightened sense of introspection to thrive within questions of existentialism. The former finds Q ruminating on the inevitable outcome of the streets but also, how the pressures of fame manifest in tragedy, whether it be the loss of Mac Miller or the public’s attitude towards mental health, specifically in the case of Ye.

“Cooties” encompasses the other side of the coin — Q is awestruck at marijuana-scented mansions in the Hills and his growth from “being trapped from all the things that you build” – yet he’s still affected by the same anxieties that the average American face. Though he’s never been one to be overtly political, Blue Lips does shed light on his outlook on governmental bodies, including Kamala Harris’ criminal justice record, and the dire threats to the next generation. “Mass shootings, when will they stop it? Hmm another kid gone for unlimited profits,” he raps on “Cooties.” “Rather keep my kid home, before you fuck up the process.”

ScHoolboy Q Finds Purpose

This consciousness of purpose and self-awareness makes ScHoolboy Q’s latest album such a refreshing entry in his catalog. Sure, the nihilism of gangster rap is pervasive on stand-outs like the hardcore-influenced “Pop” ft. Rico Nasty captures the rugged West Coast skater culture or the militant aggression of “Lost Times” and “Pig feet.” However, there’s a levity to his voice, writing, and attitude toward the world, even when he’s tapped into his most ruthless form.

While albums like Setbacks and Habits & Contradictions captured the numerous adversities he faced with an aloof tone, Blue Lips looks back at those moments as learning curves. The latter half of the project starts unraveling this album’s theme with more clarity. Songs like “germany ‘86” find Q returning to his birthplace. Through this, he details his mother’s return to Hoover after serving her country, only to be thrown to the wolves. It’s here where Q acknowledges that, despite how the women in his life tried to deter him from the streets, it was an inevitable outcome. The environment in which he grew up, regardless of whether he jumped off the porch, would’ve forced him to grow up far too quickly.

Conclusion

There’s a reason why an artist like ScHoolboy Q could wait five years before releasing another album. It’s a luxury that very few artists are afforded, no matter the medium. Blue Lips stands as ScHoolboy Q’s most ambitious album to date, one that pushes the boundaries that he set for himself. With a bit of clarity and ambition, the follow-up to CrasH Talk is a much more gratifying listen that encompasses a level of depth that we haven’t heard from ScHoolboy Q in the past. He’s at peace with himself but more importantly, comfortable in the mental space that he currently occupies.

Daz Dillinger Takes Aim At Dr. Dre Over “The Chronic” Royalties: “You Gonna Rob Us Like Death Row?”

It’s been 31 years since Dr. Dre dropped the project that was The Chronic, a groundbreaking album that not only marked the inception of the G-Funk era. But also propelled the careers of hip-hop legends like Snoop Dogg, Lady of Rage, Daz Dillinger, Nate Dogg, Kurupt, and more. As fans around the world celebrated the album’s anniversary on December 15, one voice rose above the nostalgic cheers with a tone of discontent. Daz Dillinger, a significant contributor to The Chronic with his work on tracks such as “B***es Ain’t S***,” “The Day The N***** Took Over,” “The Roach (Outro),” and “Deeez Nuuuts,” took to Instagram to air his grievances against Dr. Dre and Interscope Records. In a fiery post, Daz Dillinger called out the iconic producer and the record label, accusing them of withholding rightful payments.

The West Coast rap scene, characterized by its gritty narratives and unfiltered authenticity, is no stranger to controversies. Daz Dillinger’s public outcry adds another layer to the complex history of Death Row Records, a label that itself has been marred with financial disputes and legal battles. In an IG post, he wrote, “HAPPY 31st C DAY TO THE CHRONIC @drdre BUT WHEN CAN WE RECEIVE OUR ROYALITIES ARE YOU OR @interscope GONE ROBB US LIKE @deathrowrecords 2024. & THE N***** FROM THE PAST WHO RAN IT str8 B**chez FUCEM  REMEMBER DAZ COPYRIGHT REVERSIONS LAW IZ FILED I WANT % not points SO YALL ON A TIME LIMIT 4MORE YRS TIL IT REVERTS BAC THEN ITS REALLY LIKE FU**EM I AINT CLEARING S*** up IM COMIN.”

Daz Dillinger Didn’t Hold Back

In the Instagram post, Daz didn’t mince words, questioning Dr. Dre’s business practices. And he drew parallels to the notorious Death Row Records era. He raised the specter of financial exploitation, asking if Dr. Dre intended to replicate the same alleged mistreatment that artists endured during the tumultuous Death Row days. “The Chronic” not only solidified Dr. Dre’s status as a hip-hop maestro but also laid the foundation for the entire West Coast hip-hop movement. It’s disheartening to witness one of the key contributors expressing dissatisfaction over compensation. Especially on an occasion meant for celebration.

The allegations pose questions about the intricate web of royalty distribution and financial dealings within the music industry. Daz Dillinger, known for his unapologetic lyrics and bold personality, has ignited a conversation. He sparked discussion about the treatment of artists, their creative contributions, and the compensation they receive in return. As fans, we find ourselves at a crossroads between nostalgia for the golden era of West Coast hip-hop and the harsh realities of the music business. Only time will reveal the true extent of the grievances voiced by Daz Dillinger, and whether his public call-out sparks a larger dialogue about the often opaque world of artist compensation in the rap game.

HNHH: For those who are just getting familiar with 310babii, how would you describe and introduce yourself?

310babii: I would say I’m a young new artist, but I’m different and unique. I’m a breath of fresh air. I’m bringing a new flavor to the rap game that hasn’t been showcased. It’s never been any light shed on my type of style or sound. Bringing something different to the game.

I love that perspective. You obviously have a single right now that’s getting a lot of attention and there’s light being shed on it. What was your reaction to “Soak City,” making noise?

It was so much all at one time it didn’t feel real. After a while it was just exciting for what’s to come. TikTok!

That’s definitely exciting! How do you balance all of this being a senior in highschool and did you know you wanted to pursue music?

Yeah. That wasn’t the only thing I wanted to do, but I knew that was a step in it.

What’s been the reaction from your friends and family?

Friends are excited for me. And there hasn’t been any changes. But now I’m showing kids who are the same age as me that it’s possible. It’s possible to make some type of noise from where we come from.

Where does your inspiration come from?

I watch other artists. And I know I can do it too. I pull things from some of my favorite artists and see what I can come up with. Like a good plan.

Who are some of those artists?

Lil Yachty, Chief Keef, Gucci, and Drake. Lil Yachty is my dream collab.

What’s in the works for you right now? What can we be on the lookout for?

More singles! And definitely an album coming soon.

Anyone special on the album that can possibly be a feature?

Yeah I do. But I wanna roll it out the right way and surprise everybody.

Who are some people in LA who have supported you? Any West Coast artists who have showed love?

Tyga, OhGeesy, and BlueBucksClan. It was a little game they gave me. They just told me just being myself and staying true to myself. The whole city rootin’ behind me.

You linked up with Luh Tyler for a song together called “Walk,” and got a chance to perform it at Complex Con! How was that? And what’s the vibe like in the studio together?

It was fun and crazy. My manager knew his manager. I’d work with him again. We haven’t been in the actual studio together yet.

What’s some of your goals for the new year? And how do you plan on ending off the year?

Honestly, I just wanna keep working. I don’t have any specific goals. Just keep working and staying hungry. I’m focused on dropping my album and all I’m looking forward to. I’m in a whole different reality with music. Things that used to be problems for me aren’t problems anymore. Now I got like, champagne problems. Certain things that I would think about 4 months ago, I don’t even care about no more. It’s like I’m in a whole different reality. The industry is like a whole different dimension. I’m living life, and having fun. Everything is music. And it’s lit.

We’ll be on the lookout! Thanks 310babii!

Moneybagg Yo Forced To Stop Denver Show Early Due To Health Emergency

Moneybagg Yo has been dealing with a tumultuous tour this year. He set sail this summer for his solo album, Hard To Love. One of the first hiccups the hitmaker had to deal with was the canceled shows due to low ticket sales. People were obviously frustrated, but some were also criticizing him and dishing out some humble pie. One person on Twitter ranted, “These street rappers got no substance in they music. nobody tryn see them walk back and forth in stage for an hour.”

If that was not enough, one of Moneybagg’s shows was shut down. This time it was out of his control as fire marshals stepped in before the concert could get underway. Due to overcapacity within a closed-in environment, safety came first. While it was disappointing for both Moneybagg and the fans, it may have been the right decision. People have been poking fun at the rapper for this rough outing. This time though, his Denver tour stop was over early due to a health scare.

According to HipHopDX, the medical emergency is still unspecified at this point. Denver was another city that was dealing with a lot of alterations. It was rescheduled from August 29 to yesterday. Then, the rapper was an hour late. Then, because of this health concern, Moneybagg only was onstage for a half hour. He took to his Instagram to clear it up as there was a photo of him connected to wires. Additionally, he had this to say to his fans, “Denver I apologize dat I had to shorten the show. Y’all just don’t kno wat I went through to make it happen tonight.” Hopefully, we hear what it was soon. We are wishing him a speedy recovery. He is slated to perform in Los Angeles, but there is no word if he will make it there tonight.

What are your initial thoughts on Moneybagg Yo canceling the Denver tour stop last night due to health concerns? Do you think he will reschedule the show once more, or will he refund the fans? “Free Juju” arrives as a poignant commentary on the challenges faced by those ensnared in the criminal justice system, addressing the struggles of a close friend, Juju. The track serves as both a tribute to resilience and a call for justice, with Mozzy’s signature gritty delivery amplifying the urgency of the message. “Free Lil Ju, that’s on the Woop, I wish they gave him bail I would’ve been grabbed him,” Mozzy raps on the track.

Dom Kennedy’s “Get Home Safely” Turns 10

Oct. 15th, 2023 marked the 10th anniversary of Dom Kennedy’s second studio album, Get Home Safely via The Other Peoples Money Company. The Futuristiks and DrewByrd served as the album’s primary producers, along with DJ Mustard, DJ Khalil, and more. It followed Kennedy’s 2011 debut, From the Westside With Love II, which established him as a major name within the LA rap scene.

While it serves as his most celebrated release to date, Get Home Safely marked a significant milestone in a thriving West Coast scene during the 2010s. It also signified a shift in a post-blog-era world where rappers could flourish independently. Today, we revisit Dom Kennedy’s Get Home Safely for its 10th anniversary.

Dom Kennedy’s Magnum Opus

Get Home Safely is arguably Dom Kennedy’s magnum opus. Not only does the music speak for itself, but the album’s critical and commercial success attests to its legacy. It debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard US Rap chart and it is also Kennedy’s highest selling album. Dom moved over 10,000 copies in the album’s first week.

Get Home Safely painted a vivid portrait of LA culture from the perspective of Dom Kenned. His cool, calm, and collected flow encapsulates the unfiltered everyday life in the City of Angels like in “Let’s Be Friends” and “After School.” Then, there are records like “Black Bentleys” that capture Dom tapping into his full songwriting potential as he reflects on the humble beginnings that shaped his career. It’s the honesty, authenticity, and pensiveness across this album that defined Kennedy’s legacy.

Ahead of its release, Dom Kennedy expressed to HipHopDX that Get Home Safely was the album he always wanted to make. He had gone on his first global tour and aspired towards “leaving a real legacy.” Ten years later, it appears that Get Home Safely did just that.

An Ambassador For A Resurging West Coast

By 2013, the West Coast was experiencing a renaissance of rising talent. Los Angeles bloomed with collectives like Odd Future, TDE, and Pac Div. Meanwhile, artists like Casey Veggies, Vince Staples, and YG also helped usher in a new era for the West Coast. Like many of these emerging acts, Dom Kennedy was in his own lane, carving out his own niche while championing the West Coast. More importantly, Kennedy waved the flag for independence with The Other Peoples Money Company while many of his peers began signing with the majors.

Features on From the Westside With Love II came from all over America, but Get Home Safely was strictly a West Coast affair. Respected legends like Krondon of Strong Arm Steady appeared on the album, but it also spotlighted the wave of buzzing artists in LA’s hip-hop scene. Nipsey Hussle and Ty Dolla $ign featured on Get Home Safely; both of whom eventually became stars in their own right. Additionally, rappers Skeme and TeeFLii contributed verses, making the album a glimpse into LA rap’s bright future. On his second studio album, Dom Kennedy was at the helm of introducing the next generation of west coast hip hop. Simultaneously, he was setting an example for independent success.

Like many rappers before and after him, Symba moved to L.A. for a chance to blow up. However, securing paid shows, juggling studio sessions, and self-promotion ate deep into his pockets. Soon after, a deal with Columbia Records served as his lifeline, but the label put the rapper in a box. After about a year and six months with Columbia, he got dropped. In a positive turn of events, this kickstarted his path to self-discovery.

Symba spent the next six months using his social media and the Internet to carve out his niche. Speaking with G.Q., he attributes his subsequent stage success to two tracks dedicated to Nipsey Hustle, which he played at an Atlantic A&R party. “I wrote two songs, ‘Trapped’ and ‘Black Jesus.’ I played those songs at the aux party,” he said. What followed afterward was a trip to N.Y.C. that got him signed to Atlantic Records in 2019.

By 2020, Symba put out his first track on the label, “Serve.” The track summarized his life thus far as he spat about his hustling uncle’s advice on how the world works when it comes to making money, his $100,000 signing bonus with Columbia, and how he spent the bulk of it. By the end of the year, his first album, Don’t Run Away from R.A.P. was welcomed by fans, who embarked on his journey to discover and embrace himself.

In 2022, he dropped his second album, Results Take Time. The rap project featured notable acts like Roddy Ricch, Pusha T, and 2 Chainz. This body of work greatly amplified his profile. It also showed off his versatility, swimming easily from West Coast rap on songs like “Can’t Win for Nothing,” to trap on “Street N***a.” However, what makes Symba’s style of rap authentic are his personal lyrics and storytelling prowess. His music takes you through his personal experiences and growth.

Furthermore, his bars draw you in with their vulnerability, and more often than not, leave the listener with a glimmer of hope. Symba’s music is sure to welcome both the old Hip Hop heads, and today’s younger, more vulnerable audience. While his tracks have aggressive beats reminiscent of the 90s, they also embody a more chill rhythm for listeners to soak in his lyrics. The rapper’s lyrical and vocal prowess have earned him notable recognition in movie soundtracks, including Space Jam and Creed 3
