Travis Scott Surprises Fans with Performance at Coachella After-Party

Travis Scott

Travis Scott may not be a Coachella headliner for this year’s music festival, but he did make a surprise (and incredibly low-key) appearance at one of the festival’s after-parties, surprising fans with a five-song set.

Scott surprised fans when he took the stage at the Revolve x Bootsy Bellows After Party, which was being held in the nearby city of La Quinta at about three in the morning, just as the event was about to shut down. The rapper reportedly simultaneously DJ’d while performing five of his hits including “Goosebumps,” reportedly delighting the audience.

The rapper’s low-key appearance was not the first time that he had performed since the November 6 Astroworld tragedy. He also performed at Darren Dzienciol and Richie Akiva‘s pre-Oscars party at a private estate in Bel-Air earlier this year.

Earlier this year, there were rumors that Scott would join Kanye West on stage as West was originally billed as a Coachella headliner. However, West pulled out of Coachella on April 5, less than two weeks before the festival.

Scott’s girlfriend, Kylie Jenner, was seen at Coachella alongside Hailey Bieber on Saturday, but there was no mention as to whether or not she attended the after-party to watch Scott perform.

Bootsy Bellows After Party has billed itself as “a surreal playground for adults and has become the elite hangout for Los Angeles partygoers.” Their pop-up events at major festivals appear to mimic that same energy, hosting major artists such as Scott, The Chainsmokers, Chase B, and DJ Irie. Scott also performed at one of the brand’s pop ups in Austin during the Big Race Weekend in October of 2021.

Judge Rules That YNW Melly’s Tattoos May Be Used in Murder Trial

YNW Melly

The state of Florida’s case against YNW Melly (Jamell Demons) may grow stronger if the prosecution has its way and the rapper’s tattoos are admitted into evidence in his murder trial.

Earlier this week, a Broward County judge presiding over the murder trial ruled that Melly’s tattoos could be photographed but has not yet ruled whether the photographs will be admissible as evidence for the prosecution. According to the prosecution, Melly’s tattoos show his alleged gang affiliation. The prosecutor alleges that Melly’s gang affiliation was the motivating factor that led to the murder of Melly’s friends Christopher “YNW Juvy” Thomas Jr. and Anthony “YNW Sakchaser” Williams in 2018.

However, among the 22-year-old’s numerous visible tattoos are two names tattooed on his neck in capital letters: “JANA” and “JAMIE.” Jamie is his mother and Jana is the mother of Anthony, one of his alleged victims. This might raise a question about why Melly would murder her son if the families were close.

Additionally, the prosecution alleges that lyrics from the rapper’s single, “Murder On My Mind,” show motive, opportunity, and propensity for the murder. However, the single dropped 18 months before he allegedly committed the murder.

Melly has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder. He faces the death penalty if convicted.

Jim Jones Drops Visuals For “We Set The Trends” (Remix) Feat. ‎Lil Wayne, Migos, DJ Khaled & Juelz Santana

Screen Shot 2022 04 13 at 4.44.59 PM

Jim Jones has gathered Lil Wayne, Migos, DJ Khaled, and Juelz Santana for the official remix of “We Set The Trends.”

Directed by Shila The Don, Jim Jones, Will C and Denity, Khaled is seen chilling in his classic, white maybach claiming no one believed in us, but God did! Lil Wayne starts off his first verse spitting iconic bars, per usual. The superstars all stand around in the cypher, rhyming over the horns melody. Juelz Santana then enters the scene on a rooftop with Jones with the global Diplomats logo covering the ground. Santana says “Gave them a head start now I’m shaving the distance, need mine with interest to be more specific,” dripped out in the most fashionable way, harlem-style.

Jim Jones & DJ Drama Gangsta Grillz  We Set The Trends was released on January 14th, distributed through #VLrecords EMPIRE. The project marks the duo’s first collaboration since 2006’s The Seven Day Theory.

Yeezy QNTM ‘Mono Carbon’ Drops with a softer look

Yeezy QNTM Mono Carbon

Although Kanye West has shown absolutely no sign of getting softer in the past two years, his most recent shoe drop, the Yeezy QNTM ‘Mono Carbon’ has, debuting this week with a softer look than the original 2020 version, just in time for spring.

The ‘Mono Carbon’ has the same general overall style as the original QNTM, which was released in 2020. The shoe is similar in that it’s base is a marbled grey Primeknit underneath gray wavy suede, creating a contrasting sense of horizontal and vertical movement. It has a milky suede toe wrap and semi-translucent milky sole, just slightly more off-white than the original 2020 version. However, the main difference is the carbon suede heel and upper, which feature three similar shades of carbon gray.  The laces (also carbon gray) are similar to the original shoe design. Like the original, the newest shoe has a full-length Boost midsole.

The charcoal gray coloring makes this an incredibly versatile shoe for this time of year, when winter and spring seem to overlap and switch back and forth in many parts of the country.

The QNTM ‘Mono Carbon’ retails for about $260 and is available online at select retailers. More information about releases and availability can be found at https://www.adidas.com/us/yeezy.

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck Spotted Again in Los Angeles

Is it just me or does it feel like Deja Vu?

Let’s go back to 20 years ago when Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck co-starred in “Gigli” and encountered what I presume you would call love at first sight, since they are back at it again. They first started dating in 2002 and got engaged in November of the same year.

Friendly reminder that JLo was coming out of divorce back in 2002. She was previously married to her second husband, Cris Judd. So when Jen and Ben started their first engagement the media could not ignore the fact that she had another rock on her finger by November. Affleck initially proposed to Lopez with a beautiful 6-carat pink diamond ring.

Even though Jennifer and Ben called off their engagement in 2004, it is clear to us all that this was not the end of their love. It was not too far back that Jennifer had a lovely 16-cart emerald-cut diamond ring. It was worth about $1.8 million – talk about big rings. I am sure Drake and Future are impressed with JLo’s lovely compilation of engagement rings. About a year ago Jennifer and Alex Rodriguez called off their 2-year engagement. And if there is one thing we know about JLo she loves love, so here we are a year later with another big announcement.

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck are engaged (again)! This time around Jennifer shared the big news with a sweet video on social media directing you to visit her OnTheJLo.com. If you were signed up for her newsletter you received a big surprise right away!

This time around Ben Affleck came to show out. He is clearly a fan of colored diamonds, since this time around he presented Jennifer with a green diamond engagement ring. We do not have all the details yet, but if it is truly a green diamond he spent at least $5 million dollars on that beauty.

All I can say at this point is best wishes to Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck! Everything that is meant to be will find its way, right?

ICYMI: Will Smith’s Mom on Oscar Slap: “I’ve Never Seen Him Do That”

Will Smith's Mom on Oscar Slap: "I've Never Seen Him Do That"

Will Smith’s mother, Carolyn Smith, spoke with Sharrie Williams of WPHVI Philadelphia following the Oscars. When asked about the now-infamous slap, Smith acknowledged that it was uncharacteristic of her son.

“He is a very even, people person,” Carolyn said. “That’s the first time I’ve ever seen him go off. First time in his lifetime. I’ve never seen him do that.”

Beyond that moment, Carolyn Smith glowed about the Best Actor win. “I know how he works, how hard he works. I’ve been waiting and waiting and waiting. When I heard the name, I was just, ‘Yes!’”

You can hear it from Will’s mom below.

Documentary WE WERE HYPHY Captures Distinct Bay Area Sound and Culture

We Were Hyphy

Los Angeles may be known as the birthplace of gangsta rap, but just 500 miles away in northern California, the Bay Area boasts its own distinct hip-hop sound and culture in a vibe that can only be described as “hyphy.” While the hyphy movement never gained the same mainstream momentum as other musical genres, it simultaneously reflected and influenced culture and sound, not just in the Bay Area, but around the nation as well, albeit somewhat subtly. The documentary WE WERE HYPHY takes viewers on a journey through the unique Hyphy culture and sound, showcasing a movement that uniquely captured a special time and place in modern history.

Through interviews with Bay Area artists including G-Eazy and Kamaiyah, journalists, industry professionals, and Bay Area legends, WE WERE HYPHY provides an intimate glimpse into the Hyphy culture and experience from two perspectives – through the eyes of the artists who created the iconic sound, and through Bay Area residents who grew up under the influence of hyphy’s uniquely charismatic spell.

Director Laurence Madrigal’s describes hyphy as a “testament to the power of the community” and uses the 84-minute movie to show how the hyphy movement started out as an underground movement that elevated the underrepresented voices of Bay Area youth and grew to a full-scale scene, with hit songs and albums, sideshows and ghost-riding, turf- and “going-dumb”-dancing, fashion trends, slang, and more.

Rooted in the counterculture of San Francisco’s Bay Area and Oakland in the late 1960s and 1970s, the Bay Area (or “the yay area” as some locals call it) has always been its own epicenter of a culture that has influenced many social movements and the sound that reflected both struggle and hope.

The film traces the sound from Too $hort’s early sound pioneering and describes how major Bay Area hyphy artists such as E-40, Mac Dre, Traxamillion, Rick Rock, and others created their distinct sounds. The documentary shows how each artist or producer brought their own flare such as Mac Dre’s 808 sound, Traxamillion’s addition of the triton keyboard, and Rick Rock’s addition of a southern Miami beat. However, the hyphy sound still had much in common: uptempo “mob” music, a lot of 808s, drums, and synthesizer sounds that is simultaneously high-energy and raw, creating an Intersection of distinct beats and wordsmithing that often borders on poetry- all with faster beats than the rap sounds of SoCal or the East Coast.

This uniqueness is one reason that G-Eazy describes the Bay Area in the documentary as an “unusual place.”

However, the film shows how hyphy extended far beyond music, both reflecting and creating community in and around Oakland through the dances, fashion, and sideshows.

An over-the-top aesthetic that mixed bling, mainstream sneakers, and airbrushed tees defined hyphy fashion while tricked out cars with state-of-the-art sound systems spun out in vacant lots and even major intersections on Friday and Saturday night, in a phenomenon that was known as “the sideshow.” Interviewees describe how the sideshows influenced hyphy culture and sound and how the sideshows reflected the energy of the hyphy attitude.

The documentary also describes how dance was the one element that truly defined the hyphy culture. Locals referred to hyphy dancing as “turfin,” dancing in a way that was unique to your “turf” or as an acronym for “taking up room on the floor.”

It also tells the darker side of the hyphy movement’s history, namely the impact that the untimely death of Mac Dre in 2004 had on the movement.

The documentary reflects how hyphy is “an energy, a feeling” and something “that you feel inside,” sampling from some of the genre’s top hits and using archived footage to create a vivid experience that transports viewers to a different time and place.

WE WERE HYPHY gets its world premiere as part of Cinejoy. The popular online offshoot of San Jose’s Cinequest film festival runs April 1-17, and comes well-stocked with world, national and Bay Area premieres, along with interactive events such as watch parties and spotlights. More information is at www.cinequest.org.
