Still, the artistic risks proved fruitful for many who found commercial success without compromising their sound. However, many alternative hip-hop artists are placed in the “underground” category, even in 2023. But, with the power of the internet, they are successful in their own right and have a different connection with their listeners than the chart-topping artists. Alternative hip-hop is a genre that continues to expand as the years go on because there will always be artists who do things their own way. We’ve compiled a list of artists from years past that laid the groundwork for the alternative hip-hop artists of today.

A Tribe Called Quest

A Tribe Called Quest was one of the pioneer groups in the alternative hip-hop space. With smooth jazzy samples from producer and rapper Q-Tip, they contrasted the prominent sounds of hardcore hip-hop. Their delivery style was smooth and lined up with their jazz-based production well. However, that’s not to say they didn’t have energy-filled tracks in their repertoire too. “Scenario” comes to mind when fans recall some of their biggest high-energy tracks which boasts a standout verse from Busta Rhymes. Meanwhile, records like “Electric Relaxation” stand as a quintessential Tribe track that pulls its smooth bass line from a sample from “Mystic Brew” by Ronnie Foster. The group transcended generations gaining listeners throughout the 90s all the way to the release of their final album in 2016.

Digable Planets

Digable Planets was an alternative hip-hop group that remains criminally underrated. Sure, they are not a household name like some other groups on this list but their impact is undeniable. Their contributions shaped jazz rap and opened the doors for alternative acts that continue to push boundaries. Their lyrical content always had a political edge to it but they doubled down on their second album Blowout Comb.

Although they only released two studio albums, they achieved some commercial success in their time. Their debut project, Reachin’ (A New Refutation of Time and Space) was certified gold. Meanwhile, their Grammy-winning single “Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)” has withstood the test of time and remains a definitive anthem in hip-hop.

De La Soul

De La Soul is a trio that burst onto the alternative hip-hop scene with unique sample choices. They had this impeccable ability to use recognizable samples that you wouldn’t expected. One of the biggest examples of this was “The Magic Number” which samples “Three Is A Magic Number” from the series Schoolhouse Rock. The group used the song to comment on the rap game with playful bars. Another standout was “Eye Know” which sampled “Peg” by Steely Dan and “Sitting on the Dock of the Bay” by Otis Redding. Audiences labeled them as a “hippie” group due to their lighthearted tones and flower-based imagery – a classification they quickly distanced themselves from as their discography grew.

The Fugees

The Fugees are a unique group in the alternative hip-hop lane who introduced the world to an artist who would continue to be a legend in that lane — Lauryn Hill. The trio only released to albums before disbanding. Their sophomore album, The Score, stands among the greatest bodies of work in hip-hop history.

In comparison to some of the other entries on this list, their sound was mature. They combined melodies with their bars, providing complex layers to their song structures. Moreover, their production combined live instrumentation and samples. There was a certain emotional weight to many songs in their discography especially the hit single “Ready or Not” which member Pras recalled seeing Hill crying while recording her vocals for. One of their more rap-focused singles was “Fu-Gee-La” whose unique production provides the perfect soundscape for their verses.

Gnarls Barkley

Gnarls Barkley was an alternative hip-hop duo that gained critical success despite their alternative status. Some listeners may classify them as more of a pop act but our inclusion of them in our list still stands. Member Cee Lo Green was once a part of Goodie Mob, a hip-hop group from Atlanta. The other half of the duo, Danger Mouse, is a reputable producer who first gained fame with the release of The Grey Album, a mash-up project that combined Jay-Z’s The Black Album and The Beatles’ The White Album. As Gnarls Barkley, their single “Crazy” went Diamond and was Grammy nominated. Their music combined multiple elements of pop, soul, hip-hop, and more which was capitalized on by Cee Lo’s unique vocal style. Their unique approach made them stand out easily from their contemporaries.

Arrested Development

Arrested Development is an alternative hip-hop group that emerged in the 90s. Their lyrics focused on pushing positivity and uplifting their listeners with production that reflected their lyrical tone. In their early years, the group accumulated a few chart-topping singles and albums that performed well commercially too. This led to them winning the Grammy for Best New Artist in 1993. Another one of their big moments in music was creating a song for Spike Lee’s film Malcolm X. Titled “Revolution,” the song has layered lyrics built around the imagery of rain and the unification of Black people.

MF DOOM

MF DOOM might be the most popular alternative hip-hop artist for listeners of this generation. Known as “your favorite rapper’s favorite rapper,” he created an eccentric yet reclusive personality that drew listeners in. Anytime he appeared on camera he would wear a mask heavily inspired by the comic book character Dr. Doom. Sometimes, “clones” of him would perform at live shows, much to fans’ disappointment. MF DOOM also had multiple eccentric qualities in his music, whether it was his unique rhymes and references or sample choices. He released music such as MF DOOM, Viktor Vaughn, and King Geedorah. His collaborative project with Madlib, Madvillainy has been immensely praise d. DOOM never attempted to climb in popularity with his career and was content at the level he was at. Even though he passed in 2022, listeners will never forget it’s “all caps when you spell the man’s name.”

Lauryn Hill Postpones Philly Show On Advice From Doctors

While Ms. Lauryn Hill is a certified rap and R&B legend, she’s developed a reputation for unpredictable live performances. She’s often either showing up hours late to shows or just canceling them entirely. That included an entire planned tour last year where The Fugees planned on reuniting to celebrate the anniversary of their classic album The Score. Lauryn is currently on tour with Fugees again, this time celebrating the 25th anniversary of her landmark solo album The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill.

Hill is about halfway through the tour and the unreliability of her live appearances has popped up again. She was scheduled to play a show in Philadelphia tonight, but just announced on social media that it was delayed. “It is with disappointment that I am writing this note to you. On the advice of my physicians, I have no choice but to postpone the show tomorrow. I need to rest my voice to prevent any more serious strain or damage to my vocal cords,” her statement reads. She goes on to express how enjoyable the tour has been up to this point. The statement concludes by confirming to fans that she will be back next month on November 25. Woodson’s The Mis-Education of the Negro and the 1972 film The Education Of Sonny Carson, Lauryn Hill’s Miseducation album fused the sounds of neo-soul, reggae, R&B and Hip Hop to create an album unlike anything similar to that which was created during the “bling” era. The 16 track classic was a mainstream hit, mainly because of the cross over appeal of singles like “Everything Is Everything”, “Doo Wop(That Thing}”, Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You” and “Ex-Factor”, with production courtesy of Ms, Hill herself.

To this day, Lauryn Hill remains one of the most mysterious figures in music. The Grammy-winning New Jersey icon went from the top of the sonic world to the shadows overnight, only releasing one solo studio album throughout her entire career. Of course, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill exists amongst the greatest fusions of hip-hop and soul to date. In addition, she was a key part of legendary hip-hop trio The Fugees throughout her early 20s. Even if Lauryn Hill’s career was frustratingly brief, her mainstay presence as a hot topic speaks volumes to her influence as an artist. If she announced a tour tomorrow, it would sell out immediately.

Lauryn Hill’s first exposure to the entertainment spotlight took place at the mere age of 13. Performing at the high-stakes Apollo Theatre, she was thrown into a world of pressure-filled expectations from a young age. At the time, the Apollo Theatre had been host to iconic acts. The Jackson 5, The Isely Brothers, Billie Holiday, and Prince had all performed at the iconic venue. Precocious and shy, she came to face-to-face with the harsh judgements of the music industry from a young age. The experience would later inform her ambiguity and lack of a fully-fledged career.

Hill had already been exposed to more pressure and scrutiny than the majority of people face through their entire lives.

Unfortunately, we live in a culture where early success is persistently romanticized. Teenagers often garner an even greater spotlight than fully grown performers, with record labels looking to profit off of their youth. The result can often be damaging for vulnerable young creators, who aren’t yet mature enough to process the high-octane expectations surrounding the music industry. Lauryn Hill was undoubtably a victim of this stigma. Her voice was thrown into a toxic world of boos and cheers before she had even faced high school. After walking off of the stage of the Apollo Theatre, she cried after the traumatic experience.

Fame & Toxic Relationships Deeply Affected Her

By high school, she had teamed up with Wyclef Jean and Pras Michel to form The Fugees. Initially solely there as a vocalist, her talent as an MC was quickly noticed by the two. The Fugees separated themself from the prevailing gangster rap narrative of the late ’80s to early ’90s, with their sophomore album blowing up off of “Killing Me Softly With His Song.” The song became a career-defining moment for Hill, who stood out as the best singer and rapper throughout The Score. The Fugees Had An On-Stage Reunion At Roots Picnic And It Could Be Their Final One Ever Given The Pras Situation

Roots Picnic was this past weekend, and on June 3, Lauryn Hill performed her set. In a surprise move, to wrap up her time on stage, she brought out Wyclef Jean and Pras Michel for a six-song Fugees reunion performance. The group had been trying to make a reunion happen for some time now, and they finally did.

What’s bittersweet here, though, is that this could be the last time the three perform together.

In April, Pras was found guilty on a number of federal charges, including money laundering, campaign finance violations, acting as an unregistered agent for China, concealment and false record-keeping, witness tampering, and making false statements. Ultimately, he could spend up to 20 years in prison, meaning that future Fugees performances with him do not seem likely.

Questlove shared a video of the performance on Instagram and wrote, “@MsLaurynHill did us a solid by letting us not only letting us celebrate with her the classic #MiseducationOfLaurynHill but she also made a moment by bringing together her bredren @WyclefJean & @PrasMichel ……in what could possibly be one of the last times we will see this institution together in this setting. I’m giving all the gratitude for making this miracle of a night happen.”
