Eminem Announces Release Date For “The Death Of Slim Shady”

Eminem is really putting effort into his current album cycle. The rapper has taken extra care to build up the hype for The Death of Slim Shady. He’s dropped teasers, collaborations with magician David Blaine, and a high concept music video for the single “Houdini.” The question on everybody’s mind, though, was when the album would drop. When would the Death of Slim Shady finally be revealed to the world? Well, Eminem gave fans an answer in predictably dramatic fashion.

The rapper released what appears to be the last of the album teasers on July 1. The video sees a grim scene at a hospital, in which a woman gives birth to an unresponsive baby. The doctors eventually get the baby breathing, but when it wakes up, it has demonic, black eyes. The mother asks what happened, and before anybody can answer, the baby flashes a split tongue and grows devil horns. The entire staff screams “holy sh*t” before running out of the delivery room. Then, the moment fans have been waiting for: a release date. The Death of Slim Shady will come out on July 12.

Eminem Went Full Demonic In His Latest Teaser

It’s a surprisingly quick turnaround, given how slowly Eminem has been releasing details. The rapper has, however, experimented with different rollouts in the past. Relapse had a lengthy promo cycle since it was supposed to be Eminem’s comeback. Recovery was billed as a correction the mixed reviews of Relapse, and Kamikaze was dropped out of nowhere. The Death of Slim Shady is obviously aiming to be a grand sendoff for Eminem’s alter ago, so it makes sense that he would want to make sure all eyes were on him.

Em hasn’t spoken in depth about The Death of Slim Shady, beyond his promos. He did, however, shed some light on his recording process during a January appearance on Shade 45. “I’m working on a little something,” he told Whoo Kid. Eminem also hinted future collaborations with 50 Cent, who appeared in the first promo for The Death of Slim Shady. “I told him whatever the f*ck he needs from me, I’m here,” the rapper explained. “That sh*t’d be crazy, though… 50’s on a roll right now. He’s been on a roll since the tour.” Hopefully we get to hear these two Aftermath stars on wax again.

Eminem, Big Sean, And BabyTron Are Ready To Cause Lyrical Nightmares In Their Video Trailer For Single ‘Tobey’

Despite fans’ pushback, the seemingly professional burial of Eminem’s rap alter ego is moving full steam ahead. With his forthcoming album The Death Of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce) on the way, Em is treating supporters to another taste of what’s to coming from the project.

Yesterday (June 28), the “Houdini” rapper took to X (formerly Twitter) page to tease his next single, “Tobey,” which is set to feature Big Sean and BabyTron.

“TOBEY. @babytron. @bigsean. New music 7/2. Video 7/5 by @colebennett,” he wrote.

In the gory clip, the trio, dressed in uniform coveralls, serve their most intimating mean mug to prove that Detroit has vested stakes in the “Big Three” conversation. With a chainsaw and creepy Jason Voorhees mask replica, Eminem hacks away at something just outside the camera’s frame, it is clear he means business.

As Babytron is heard rapping, “Tobey Maguire got bit by a spider but see me it was a GOAT,” Eminem’s love for film certainly found its way into the forthcoming collaboration.

Instead of fighting crime (as hilariously seen in the “Houdini” visual), Eminem, Big Sean, and BabyTron plan on wrecking havoc in the rap streets. With creative mind, Lyrical Lemonade’s Bennett, tasked to bring the vision to the screen, come July 5, the nightmares are soon to follow.

Eminem’s ‘Houdini’ Video Would’ve Been Beloved By Adam West, According To The OG Batman’s Family

Eminem’s latest single “Houdini” might’ve pissed off a few people, including Megan Thee Stallion, Paul Rosenberg, and even his own children. But the comedic, action-packed video just earned praise from a very interesting party.

Today (June 9), Adam West’s family came out to show their support for the rapper’s official visual. In a statement provided to TMZ, Nina Tooley (the late actor’s daughter) gushed about how her dad would’ve loved the silly tribute to his famed Batman role.

“My dad would have loved the video,” she said. “I could hear my dad’s distinct chuckle when the rapper was trying to scale a building with the ‘Bat Rope’ just like he and [Burt Ward] did in the series.”

In the video, Eminem drew inspiration from one of the duo’s many ‘Bat Rope’ scenes. But instead of suiting as the mysterious vigilante, the rapper reprised his role as faithful sidekick Robin. This isn’t the first Eminem interjected his interest in comic into his work. In fact, Eminem first sported spandex back in 2002, for the official video for the chart-topping single “Without Me” with his longtime mentor and friend Dr. Dre by his side of Batman.

Dr. Dre made his superhero return in “Houdini.” The video also featured notable appearances by Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent, The Alchemist, Pete Davidson, and Shane Gillis. With his forthcoming album, The Death Of Slim Shady, set to be his final LP, Eminem clearly wanted to go out with a cartoonish boom, snap, and pow.

Eminem Returns With “Houdini”: 5 Standout Bars

After nearly 4 years, Eminem has finally returned with the promise of a new solo album titled The Death Of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce). The rapper confirmed that it will drop this summer. It has been marketed with several viral promotional videos and photos in the style of a crime documentary. Eminem’s lead single for the album, “Houdini” was released over the weekend, along with an off-the-wall music video that saw the rapper revisiting his roots. As always, Eminem’s new single has a ton of strange, bizarre, and patently out-of-pocket bars for us to examine. Without any further preamble, let’s dive into Eminem’s bars on “Houdini” and examine their structure and meaning.

1. Megan Thee Stallion Catches A Backhanded Shout Out

Throughout Eminem’s entire career, the Detroit native has been known to call out his peers and contemporaries with humorous jabs. In “Houdini,” it seems clear that Eminem holds fellow rap megastar Megan Thee Stallion in high regard, as he wonders aloud whether the Houston hottie would be willing to appear on a track with him. Towards the beginning of the song, Eminem raps “If I was to ask for Megan Thee Stallion if she would collab with me/ Would I really have a shot at a feat?

This bar clearly references the incident where Meg was shot in the foot by her former partner Tory Lanez, which some fans on the internet have interpreted as a diss. Fortunately, it’s obvious that Eminem holds no genuine bad blood for Meg, as his diss bars tend to be significantly more scathing. You’d never catch the 51-year-old pondering the likelihood of a Benzino feature, that’s for sure.

2. The Bridge Offers Some Classic Eminem Insight

Later in “Houdini,” Eminem places a mirror on the world around him, by questioning “Sometimes I wonder what the old me would say/ If he could see the way sh** is today/ He’d probably say that everything is gay/ (Like happy) What’s my name, what’s my name?” Indeed, the old Marshall Mathers LP era Eminem would surely use the word “gay,” or a few other choice homophobic slurs to describe the state of modern media and pop culture.

LGBTQ activist groups frequently boycotted Eminem during the early years of his career, as many viewed his rampant use of homophobic slurs as highly offensive. Today, Eminem has stopped using slurs in his music, and has become a true ally to the LGBTQ cause, especially considering one of his own children identifies as non-binary.

3. It Wouldn’t Be An Eminem Song Without Puns

Eminem tends to utilize a lot of puns and silly wordplay in his rhymes, and “Houdini” is no exception. In the song, he makes reference to R. Kelly’s 2002 child pornography trial, which infamously saw the R&B legend filming himself while urinating on a 14-year-old girl. Eminem raps “In the coupe leaning back my seat/ Bumpin’ R. Kelly’s favorite group – the black guy pee’s.” Here, Eminem uses the phrase “black guy pees” as a humorous homonym for the band Black Eyed Peas. The bar isn’t much of a thinker, but it has made a splash with fans for its funny absurdity, proving that the “Lose Yourself” rapper has not lost his sense of humor.

4. One Of The More Confusing Bars Has Social Media In An Uproar

As previously stated, Eminem has a spotty relationship with the LGBTQ community, exemplified by many problematic lyrics spoken over the course of his career. In “Houdini,” Eminem makes a bizarre reference to trans identities with the bar “My transgender cat’s Siamese/ Identifies as black, but acts Chinese.” Users on social media have whipped themselves into a fervor trying to determine the meaning of this bar, and, perhaps more importantly, trying to decipher if it is transphobic. While the simplest explanation is that Siamese cats hail from Asia and often have black faces, some fans have taken to performing mental gymnastics to explain the lyric. For now, there’s no real way to be certain about the line’s true meaning.

5. Eminem Isn’t Holding Back, Even For His Own Kids

Toward the very end of “Houdini,” Eminem launches into a tirade of insults, maligning his friends and collaborators. In fact, Eminem’s own kids catch a stray. Closing out the final verse, Em spits “I’ll probably get sh** for that/ But you can all suck my d***, in fact/ F*** them, f*** Dre, f*** Jimmy, f*** me, f*** you/ F*** my own kids, they’re brats!” In the music video, this bar is accompanied by a shot of Eminem giving the middle finger to his children via FaceTime.

While “Houdini” showcases Eminem’s wacky early 2000s style, the video offers a wide array of insight into the concept of the Death Of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce) album. If the tone and narrative of the video is anything to go off of, this project may just pan out to be one of Eminem’s funniest and most fascinating works of the last two decades.

Eminem Comes For Megan Thee Stallion, Paul Rosenberg, And His Own Kids On His New Song ‘Houdini’

Guess who’s back, back again? Shady’s back, quite possibly for the last time. Over the past few weeks, Eminem has been teasing a graceful exit. Earlier this month, he announced his 12th studio album, The Death Of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce), teasing a potential bow-out from music. He continued to fuel rumors of his impending retirement in a teaser for his new single, “Houdini,” in a clip in which he tells magician David Blaine he plans to make his career disappear. Tonight (May 31), Eminem kicked off the end of an era with “Houdini.”

On “Houdini,” Eminem takes a look at the current cultural landscape, offering his takes on recent events.

Some lines are just plain tasteless

“If I was to ask for Megan Thee Stallion if she would collab with me / Would I really have a shot at a feat.”

Some are boomer-coded

“My transgender cat’s Siamese / Identifies as black, but acts Chinese”

And some are callbacks to the old Slim Shady, who would diss everyone, even members of his own crew

F*ck Dre, f*ck Jimmy, f*ck me, f*ck you F*ck my own kids, they’re brats

The song marks a return to the irreverent form with which Eminem first stepped onto the scene. But who’s asking for this in 2024? The accompanying video — which features cameos from Dr. Dre, Pete Davidson, and Shane Gillis — continues upon his “Without Me” video from 2002, with current Eminem and 2002 Slim Shady examining all that has changed in the past two decades.

As the age-old adage holds, old habits die hard.

You can watch the video for “Houdini” above (if you must).

An Eminem comeback is on the horizon. Over the course of the past few weeks, the Detroit rapper has been teasing his new album, The Death Of Slim Shady. Though he’s been keeping much of the album details a secret, he finally let fans know when they can expect the first taste of the album.

The 12th album’s title, The Death Of Slim Shady hints that Eminem will kill off his irreverent, unfiltered alter ego, Slim Shady. In a clip shared to Instagram, Eminem is seen on a FaceTime call with world-famous musician, David Blaine.

Em then asks Blaine for tips on a strange magic tragic.

“I was wondering, how far can we go with this magic?,” asks Eminem in the video. “Like, can we do like a stunt or something?”

Blaine is then seen drinking from a glass of wine, and proceeds to bite off the rim of the glass. Eminem then reveals just what tricks he has up his sleeve.

“Well for my last trick, I’m going to make my career disappear,” Eminem says.

At the end of the clip, Em then reveals the title of his new single, “Houdini,” as well as its May 31 release date. Shortly after, fans can hear a brief instrumental of the track.

Eminem Went As Far As Putting A Fake Obituary In A Real Newspaper To Promote ‘The Death Of Slim Shady’

In April, Eminem announced a new album, The Death Of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce). The rapper is really leaning into the morbid aspect of it now with a (fake) obituary, which he put in a (real) newspaper.

The obit as seen in the Detroit Free Press newspaper has a headline of “Slim Shady Made Lasting Impressions” and the sub-headline of “Fans ‘Will Never Forget’ Controversial Rapper.” The obituary itself reads:

“A product of Detroit who began his career there as a rogue splinter in the flourishing underground rap scene of the mid to late 1990’s, Shady first became a household name in 1999 with the debut of his playfully deranged single ‘My Name Is,’ which — along with its uniquely eye catching video — exposed the young artist and his lyrics to a wider audience. That audience was soon exposed to the extreme darkness of the muse/rapper, as he led millions of music fans down a road that glorified a demonstrably nihilistic worldview.

Ultimately, the very things that seemed to be the tools he used became calling cards that defined an existence that could only come to a sudden and horrific end. His complex and tortured existence has come to a close, and the legacy he leaves behind is no closer to resolution than the manner in which this character departed this world.

May he truly find the peace in an afterlife that he could not find on Earth.”

Eminem Readies “The Death Of Slim Shady” Album: Artists We Want On The Album

Eminem has not released a solo album since 2020’s Music To Be Murdered By: Side B. However, Dr. Dre shocked the hip hop world weeks ago when he announced that his musical protege would be releasing an album later this year, remarking, “I’ve got songs on it, and it’s fire.” Now that fans have seen the first promotional materials for the new project, revealed to be titled The Death Of Slim Shady, a wave of excitement has already begun. This is also the first time Eminem has announced a project with advanced notice since his critically panned 2017 effort Revival. Subsequent Eminem drops have all been surprise releases.

Eminem’s recent efforts, such as his inclusion in the Lyrical Lemonade album All Is Yellow, have been praised as a return to form by many fans, leading some to believe The Death Of Slim Shady will be his strongest body of work in a long time. While we don’t have a tracklist or album art just yet, now is as good a time as any to speculate what hip-hop legends will appear on the project, or at least, which ones the fans would be most happy to see.

5. Jay-Z

Eminem and Jay-Z haven’t traded bars since 2001’s “Renegade,” though they have always shown each other love. The pair also co-headlined the Home & Home tour together in 2010, sharing the stage for some of their greatest solo hits. While Jay-Z hasn’t been rapping much lately, it would surely be a monumental moment to get these two hip-hop icons back on a track together on The Death Of Slim Shady. Jay-Z was instrumental in bringing Eminem to the Super Bowl halftime show in 2022, so the pair definitely know how to get in touch with each other.

4. Westside Gunn

Despite having been once signed to a distribution deal with Shady Records, Westside Gunn has never properly shared a track with the Death Of Slim Shady rapper. Gunn and Benny The Butcher hopped on a remix of the Conway The Machine track “Bang” which featured Eminem back in 2019, though that is the closest we’ve ever been to getting an Eminem track with the core Griselda trio.

These days, it’s likely kind of a long shot to get Westside Gunn on any Shady Records release, as the rapper has alluded to the imprint offering a general lack of support since concluding his deal. Still, the very notion of Eminem spitting dense, wordplay-heavy lyrics over an Alchemist beat, ad-libbed by Westside Gunn shouting gun onomatopoeias is enough to give any hip-hop head the stank face.

3. Nas

Nas has offered Eminem something of a career blueprint in recent years, with his illustrious six-album run from 2020 through 2023 serving as some of the best music to be produced by a hip-hop elder in the history of the genre. Eminem popped up for a feature on the King’s Disease 2 track “EPMD 2,” prompting a flurry of questions from fans as to why these two legends don’t collaborate more often. Nas is currently gearing up for a full studio album with DJ Premiere, so there’s still plenty of time for Marshall to meet him in the studio if he hasn’t already.

2. 50 Cent

Whether you love Eminem, hate him, or feel largely indifferent to his musical legacy, we can likely all agree that his work with 50 Cent is some of his best. 50 already appeared in the first promotional video for The Death Of Slim Shady, humorously confessing, “I thought we were friends. He’s not a friend, he’s a psychopath.” Like Jay-Z, 50 doesn’t come outside to rap quite as often as he used to, but if there’s one MC who could make him dust off his pen and spit a career-defining verse, it’s Eminem.

Em and 50 also recently appeared in a comedy skit for Jimmy Kimmel Live, which saw them operating on Kimmel alongside hip-hop legends Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre. Given the evidence, it’s clear that Eminem and 50 Cent have been hanging out lately, so it would come as no surprise if it turns out that they’ve been in the booth together.

1. Royce Da 5’9″

In the latter half of Eminem’s career, many albums have featured unnecessary collaborations with pop singers instead of respected hip-hop legends. This has been a key critique from Eminem fans and haters alike. Of all the hardcore rhymers Em has ever stood beside, Royce da 5’9″ has pushed him the hardest, getting incredible performances out of the Detroit MC on tracks such as “You Gon’ Learn,” “Fast Lane,” “Vegas,” and even the original version of “Renegade,” before Jay-Z jumped on it. Eminem launched his official studio career with the album The Slim Shady LP in 1999, prominently featuring Royce on the track “Bad Meets Evil.” If The Death Of Slim Shady truly is the closing of a chapter, there’s no other way for Eminem to do it than with at least one or two verses from his long-time Detroit cohort.

Eminem Announced ‘The Death Of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce)’ As His Next Album, And He Seems To Really Mean It This Time

The 2024 NFL Draft is being held in Eminem’s beloved Detroit, so he was prominently featured alongside NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell in the league’s promotion. Once the NFL Draft began on Thursday night, April 25, Eminem pivoted to promote something else — announcing a new album. Of course, Eminem fooled people with a faux album announcement on April Fools’ Day, but this announcement seems real.

According to Variety, a trailer for the album began making the rounds on X (formerly Twitter) after Eminem appeared on stage with Goodell to officially commence the NFL Draft.

XXL was among the accounts circulating the 30-second video, which shows a true crime reporter on “Detroit Murder Files” discussing “the blond anti-hero known as Slim Shady,” who “has had no shortage of enemies.” 50 Cent appears, saying, “He’s not a friend; he’s a psychopath.” Back to the true crime reporter (or rather, the man spoofing a true crime reporter with impeccable accuracy), detailing that Slim Shady’s “rude lyrics and controversial antics may have ultimately led to his demise.” He concludes, “Join me as we recreate the events that led to the murder of Slim Shady.”

The screen is then populated with the message, “THE DEATH OF SLIM SHADY (COUP DE GRACE) SUMMER 2024.”

Earlier this month, Eminem also announced an upcoming documentary by posting a casting call for real-life “Stans.”
