Terrence J Talks Returning to Chevy 'Discover the Unexpected (DTU)' Program to Benefit HBCU Students

Ten talented students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) nationwide have gathered in Detroit to kickstart a transformative 10-week immersive internship program in marketing and communications. This program, hosted by Chevrolet and the National Newspaper Publication Association (NNPA), aims to equip these students with valuable skills in content creation and expose them to the cutting-edge technology driving the automotive industry.

The fellows will collaborate with NNPA journalists and Chevrolet marketing teams throughout the internship, delving into innovative and challenging assignments. They will also have the exciting opportunity to embark on a group road trip, experiencing the all-new 2024 Chevrolet Trax while documenting their journey on social media platforms.

Now in its seventh year, the Discover the Unexpected (DTU) internship program offers HBCU students a platform to grow professionally and gain hands-on experience. Mentors and ambassadors, all HBCU graduates themselves, will guide the students throughout their DTU journey. Returning for his third year as an ambassador is renowned television host and actor Terrence Jenkins, also known as Terrence J.

“Having support and opportunities during your college years is invaluable and will set you on a path of lifelong success,” said Jenkins. “As a proud HBCU graduate, I am thrilled to collaborate with Chevrolet and the NNPA again to uplift the next generation of talented journalists, marketers and content creators.”

Chevrolet and the NNPA remain committed to developing young talent and providing opportunities for underrepresented communities. The DTU internship program serves as a stepping stone for these bright students to thrive in their careers and make a positive impact in the marketing and communications fields.

Speaking with The Source, Terrence J details the benefits of the Chevy DTU program for students and the importance of these students receiving this hands-on experience.

The Source: How does being involved with Chevy’s DTU program this year feel?

Terrence J: It feels amazing to be back with Chevy’s DTU program this year. The students this year are phenomenal. I’m so excited to work with them and help mentor them on this journey to discover the unexpected.

What motivated you to become a mentor for HBCU students?

When I was in college, I remember doing my summer internships and having different mentors and leaders in my life who took a chance on me. Those extra lunches and times in the office changed my life and perspective on things. It gave me a sense of purpose and enthusiasm. I want to give some of that to these young people.

How are interacting and engaging with these students?

We just left Detroit, and I met all the students as they started their journey. We had a great lunch to kick things off, and they had many different questions about life, how to manage their finances, and a job while in school. To be able to sit there and talk candidly and provide insight was truly a blessing. It’s always amazing to give back.

The DTU program works to empower communities for marketing and journalists. In what ways do you see this happening?

This program isn’t just throwing money into the HBCU system. Instead, I get to assist and see hands-on experience in the journalism and marketing fields. So when they have the kings that they learn in the classroom on how to conduct an interview and what to expect in the workforce, this program is actually conducting the interview and being in the workforce, meeting new people. It’s an amazing journey for the students and gives them practical hands-on experience to connect the dots and build the future.

How has being an HBCU alum helped you in your career?

First, I wasn’t accepted into many schools, and HBCU took a chance on me. I wouldn’t have a lot of opportunities if it weren’t for my experience of going to an HCBU. Some of the mentors in the communications department that helped me when I was in school and still helped me to this day still provide a sounding bar. They don’t care how many awards shows I’m at; if I call them, they will give it to me straight. But even the people I work with, from Will Packer to Steve Harvey to Taraji P. Henson, all link to my fraternity and HBCU background. It’s very near and dear to my heart and has benefitted me in many ways.

What challenges do you think the students encounter going into the workforce that they may not expect, and how can this program ease the burden of some of them?

There are so many different challenges. When you have to work with people, that’s a challenge on its own. We live in a world where communication occurs through different platforms. You have to be able to let that go and be in actual meetings or interview people, look them in the eyes, and have that interaction. It’s completely different from being on video games or social media. So this type of hands-on experience, especially for journalism students, will benefit their future and career.

You can study journalism. But when you go out there and apply it, there’s nothing else like it. When interviewing someone, you may have to ask uncomfortable questions or want to dig deep; that skill set has to be developed over time. These students are getting that practical experience. They will be in settings they have never seen before and travel to different places. Half of them had never been to Detroit, so they will be exposed to different cities, hotel rooms, food, and people. Then there is the competition of other students that are wanting the same things. All of those elements are a part of this fellowship experience. Once you have it, you will return the next semester and be a cut above the rest. So I’m really excited for these students and this journey.

YesJulz Denies Sleeping With LeBron James, Being With Terrence J During Car Crash

YesJulz has recently cleared up some ongoing rumors on social media. Earlier today, she shut down claims that she was in the car with Terrence J during his 2018 car wreck. She also spoke on rumors that she has slept with NBA star LeBron James.

She discussed accusations that she was the mystery woman seen in the car with Terrence J during his alleged hit-and-run. “I’ve told my truth and the next time I see any media platform spreading a false narrative about me my lawyer is going to sue the f*ck out of you,” she wrote on Twitter, “Try me if you’d like, I’ve got the budget & motivation to fight back now.” YesJulz went on to call out Joe Budden, who she’s previously had beef with. “That goes for you too, Joe Buggin. I wasn’t the one in the car & I’m not letting that narrative continue without repercussions either.” She added, “Enough is enough.”

YesJulz Says Her And LeBron Were Just Friends

YesJulz also squashed rumors that she slept with LeBron James, claiming that the two of them were never romantically involved. “I have never in my entire life been alone with LeBron James,” she said, “Period.” She explains, “Clearly we were friends, I was working in Miami I was one of the most popular party goers and throwers in Miami.” The personality went on to describe working alongside James. She asks, “Do you think that somebody who’s married would Tweet and take pictures with and be around somebody that they’re […] doing something with?”

She revealed that her relationship with James’ friend ultimately didn’t work out, but they remain friends. Terrence J Claims Beyoncé Made $45 Million For Dubai Show

Terrence J says that Beyoncé earned $45 million for her controversial performance in Dubai. Reflecting on the show during an appearance on The Breakfast Club, Terrence J revealed the figure the global star was paid as well as how the show went down.

“The number was reflective of not just the payment to her but it was a whole production around it,” Terrence explained.

When T.I., who was also on The Breakfast Club, mentioned the price point being $24 million, Terrence clarified it was significantly higher.

He said: “I don’t even think that was the number. I think the number was actually more. I think like the bigger number was more around $45 million. It’s the biggest launch. They wanted to outdo the original Atlantis launch which was the biggest one at the time.”

The performance marked the end of a four-year performing hiatus for Beyoncé. The Renaissance singer is expected to be going on tour to promote her 2022 album at some point this year, although she has not made the announcement.

“Beyoncé looked amazing,” Terrence said of her Dubai show. “She looked impeccable. Voice, obviously. Blue Ivy came out. All the vibes were there. A very theatrical performance. So this wasn’t ‘Single Ladies’ dancing type Beyoncé. This was ‘Halo’ Beyoncé. Very classy. The outfits and the wardrobes was masterful. She came out, she went on this little platform and had the wind and the water hitting her. It was amazing.”

Elsewhere, Terrence addressed rumors that he attended the concert with Nia Long.

Nia Long & Terrence J Link Up After Beyoncé’s Concert In Dubai

Nia Long’s recent heartbreak isn’t stopping her from living her best life. In the latter half of 2022, the 52-year-old uncovered the truth about her ex-fiancé, Ime Udoka’s infidelities in their relationship. Much to the pleasure of several famous figures, she left the basketball coach behind in wake of all the drama.

Since then, a number of suitors have tried shooting their shot. Back in October, Cam’ron made it known that he was throwing his hat in the ring with a flirtatious DM. It subsequently appeared on his own feed after failing to attract a response.

“Hey stink,” the Dipset rapper wrote at the time. “I  was giving you some time to yourself till I reached out. Your perseverance as a strong Black woman through this turbulent time has been something to behold. You shouldn’t be taken advantage of and exploited as you did nothing to deserve this. Especially all over these sports networks. You’re bigger and better [than] that.”

While nothing seems to have transpired from the New Yorker’s attempt at finding love, Long has since been spotted with several different men. Firstly, she and Omarion made headlines at the premiere of her latest film. The B2K alum shared a video of him and the black-haired beauty on the red carpet. In it, she grabs his hand, leaving him obviously blushing and smiling.

Despite the internet’s immediate speculation, she was quick to clarify that she’s “single AF” for the time being.

Long’s next big stop came after a flight to Dubai to watch Beyoncé’s extravagant return to the stage. The event was undeniably star-studded, with Chloe and Halle Bailey, DDG, and Kendall Jenner all making the trip to see the show.

Another famous face in attendance was 106 & Park‘s Terrence J, who was seen having a laugh with the often-rapped-about starlet over the weekend. In a circulating video, she giggles away while the actor helps her out of a luxury car.

Of course, the clips have caused some to tweet about Long’s ex, joking that he has to watch her virally get her lick back without being able to do anything about it.

Aside from her recent romance rumours, Nia Long has also been in the headlines lately for her work in Netflix’s You People. She stars in the film alongside Eddie Murphy, Jonah Hill, and Lauren London. Within the plot, the latter two try to navigate a relationship despite their family’s distinct cultural differences.

T.I. & Joseph Sikora Star In New Horror Film “Fear”

Former “106 & Park” host Terrence J, rapper T.I., and Joseph Sikora of “Power” fame are all starring in a new psychological thriller. Fear, set to premiere in theaters next month, follows a group that finds their worst fears unfold after visiting a strange hotel.

Fear’s trailer shows the group gathering around a campfire at night while in the middle of the woods. Innocently admitting to fears like blood and drowning, they each are tasked with dealing with the very thing that causes them terror.

The film is directed by Deon Taylor, who previously worked on The Intruder and Black and Blue. He also worked with Sikora in the past, directing an episode of Starz’s Power Book IV: Force.

Speaking with Complex about the horror movie, Sikora recently shared, “There is no other horror film that has ever existed that comments so deeply on the concept of not only the Carl Jung theory of the collective unconscious, but also the incorporation of a media society, and how ancient evils can permeate into the souls of men and women through connective emotion in our case, fear.”

Filming Fear in 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Taylor previously revealed that “testing 65 people every other day was extremely hard to do, but we pulled it off.”

Discussing the film further, the director-writer added that Fear “has a very very powerful relevant message about how we deal with fear and the fact that fear can kill us.”

You can catch the upcoming film on January 27. Share your thoughts on the spooky trailer in the comments down below.
