There has long been a lot of crossover between the basketball and hip-hop world. We regularly see artists putting in work in the gym with top hoops trainers and even trying their hand at pro ball, while there is a long history of NBA players hopping in the studio to put out a rap album. As 2 Chainz — who played basketball at Alabama State — once eloquently explained to Dime, a lot of rappers and basketball players come from the same places.

“I know for a lot of Blacks, we thought that our only way to get out of the hood was either rappin’ or playing basketball,” 2 Chainz said. “So it has a common denominator for me and people who have a low socioeconomic status for a background. It kind of feels like you have to have a sport or some kind of other skill set, you dig, to get your mama a house. So that’s why we all want to play basketball, and that’s why all basketball players want to rap.”

However, there are levels to success in that crossover realm, and plenty of debate as to who has done the best when dipping a toe into that other world. On the most recent episode of Uproxx’s “Fresh Pair,” Dave East joined Just Blaze and Katty Customs and the conversation turned to hoops (5:00 mark of the above video). East played college ball at Richmond and Towson before becoming a hip-hop artist, and as such, he’s well-equipped to offer his list of the best ballers who rap and rappers who ball — noting there aren’t many that can really hoop.

“Ballers to rap? I would say, gotta throw Shaq in there. Shaq had a feature with Biggie, so you always gotta throw Shaq in. Shaq was hard, he was probably one of the first ones,” East said. “A.I. I feel like a lot of people don’t put Iverson in there, but I remember the “40 Bars” and all that. I remember Iverson, you feel me. Dame Lillard, to me now, in this generation right now, I think Dame got it as far as a baller that rap.

“Rappers to ball? Me. Yeah, I’m gonna put myself on the top of that list. I gotta get in shape. I feel like a lot of them rapper basketball dudes, they do it now. They got famous, they got a name, and that’s like their hobby in their free time. Like, I really used to play basketball. Before I ever wrote a rhyme or ever really thought about this, I was in the park or in the gym. I was really playing ball. When I see them lists, I laugh. I really used to do that. I need 30 days to get in shape. I got real footage on a real Division 1 program. Go find another rapper, I think 2 Chainz played D1. But it wasn’t too many of them that was. There’s a few of ‘em that nice. Salute the ones that are.”

It’s safe to say East isn’t very impressed by the videos of artists in the lab with Chris Brickley and other hoops trainers, but he does recognize he would need a month to train to get back in actual hoops shape.

After the Los Angeles Lakers exit from the playoffs at the hands of the Denver Nuggets, Darvin Ham has been on the hot seat. It was reported earlier in the week that the Lakers coach would likely be fired by the end of the week. Now the news is official: Darvin Ham has been fired by the Los Angeles Lakers. Ham had been under fire all season, and the playoff exit sealed his fate.

Darvin Ham coached the Lakers for two seasons. Last year, after battling out of the play-in tournament, the Lakers, led by LeBron James, made it all the way to the Western Conference Finals. This season, the Lakers were a low seed once again and had to play in the in-season tournament, ultimately getting matched up with the defending champs in the first round. The Denver Nuggets defeated the Lakers four games to one in what was an entertaining and hard-fought series. Ultimately, the Lakers just did not have enough for the champs. Darvin ham is done in LA. Firing Ham was inevitable as he was the easiest person to blame. Draymond Green had recently commented you couldn’t really blame Darvin Ham for not improving the team’s standing when the roster didn’t get better from the year before. It’s a fair point, but NBA coaching is often an unfair business. Fans and pundits often criticized Ham for his lack of decision-making and his odd lineup choices. The roster was in flux all season, with some players not showing up. D’Angelo Russell struggled early but became one of the best shooters in the NBA in the second half of the season. Then promptly reverted in the playoffs.

The Lakers have plenty more decisions to make. Reportedly, the next Lakers coach will benefit from a significant roster overhaul. The franchise will use the Laker’s draft stock to improve the roster. Furthermore, LeBron James’s future is still up in the air. In an effort to keep the King in LA, the Lakers might be keen on drafting his son Bronny for the 2024 NBA draft. The Bucks’ postseason run and second half of the season haven’t gone as planned. Injuries to Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard did not help the Bucks’s cause this postseason. Patrick Beverley was called upon to step up with the health of the Bucks two best players in question. Overall Beverley talked a lot of trash on the court and on social media. Furthermore, in last night’s losing effort Beverley got into a tense altercation with Pacers fans. He threw a ball at a fan’s head.

Patrick Beverley is an interesting NBA personality. Overall, he talks a big game and never really backs it up. He is a backup PG with a lot to say and now he has a podcast as a platform. After the game, in the locker room press crum, Beverley was his usual abrasive and delusional self. He stopped a reporter mid-question and asked if a journalist subscribed to his podcast. When they said they didn’t he asked them to leave immediately. Then doubled down and refused to answer questions until the reporter left the locker room. It is a wild and disrespectful move by Beverley who has a history of these types of moments.

Now he has apparently tested positive for juicing before the fight, and MMA legend Conor McGregor is calling him out for it.

Ryan Garcia made waves when he completely dominated his fight against Devin Haney. He knocked Haney down three times, and at some point, he looked at his opponent with pity and told him to call the fight. Garcia was already three pounds overweight for the fight which is an advantage in Boxing. It’s the reason why even though he won, he couldn’t take Haney’s WBC title. Christian Wood Gets Full Custody Of His Child And Restraining Order On His Ex Yasmine Lopez

Lakers big man Christian Wood missed his team’s first-round matchup against the Denver Nuggets due to injury. Now it looks like Wood was battling some more important business in his daily life. In court earlier this week, Woods won his lawsuit against his now-ex, Yasmine Lopez. Woods recounted how Lopez had vandalized his car and jumped his fence at a previous court appearance. Additionally, he spoke about an instance where he had a run-in with Yasmine’s friend. Tee from “Baddies” confronted him when attempting to pick up their child.

After the initial court appearance Wood had asked the court for primary physical custody but agreed to joint legal custody with the mother of his child. He was also given a stay-away order, which required Lopez to keep a distance of 100 yards from him until the following hearing. Lopez failed to appear for the hearing. Woods was given exclusive custody of his son Kobe and a permanent restraining order that would run until 2027. She failed to appear or submit any kind of petition in opposition to his request resulting in Wood’s win.

Christian Wood has now won sole custody of his son and a restraining order against his ex yasmine Lopez. The court order reads, “The responding party was given notice and an opportunity to be heard, as provided by the laws of the State of California. There are no calls, check-ins, or appearances by or on behalf of the Respondent.” The whole ordeal is messy on Lopez’s [asrt and the ruling is probably best for all parties involved.
