Fleet Foxes Are Happy To Land Their First Song On The ‘Billboard’ Hot 100 Chart Thanks To Post Malone

Fleet Foxes are one of the most respected indie bands of their generation, and to a degree, that has been reflected on the charts: Helplessness Blues peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 while Crack-Up topped out at No. 9. As is often the case with indie bands, though, while the albums perform well, they haven’t had much success with singles on the Hot 100. In fact, before this week, Robin Pecknold and company had yet to get a song onto the chart.

This week, though, that changed: Post Malone’s “Love/Hate Letter To Alcohol,” a collaboration with Fleet Foxes from Twelve Carat Toothache, debuted at No. 70 on the new Hot 100 chart dated June 18, giving the band their first-ever appearance on the chart.

The band was pretty happy about the accomplishment: On Instagram, the accounts for both the band and Pecknold shared a graphic noting the chart debut, with Fleet Foxes adding heart and sparkle emojis and Pecknold going with the “call me hand” emoji (which is also used to represent a shaka sign).

This collaboration was a long time coming: Posty called Pecknold a “great writer” in 2018, then in 2020, Pecknold said of his friendship with Malone, “He’ll text me every once in a while and it’s always a really fun thing to receive. To have that pop up in my iMessages, it always feels like a glitch in the Matrix or something. […] He’s a super sweet guy, he’s a real gentleman, and he’s probably the best melody writer in the business right now, I think. And by some glitch in the Matrix, we have a casual friendship.”

Post Malone Performs ‘Cooped Up’ And ‘Love/Hate Letter To Alcohol’ For The First Time On ‘SNL’

In just a few weeks, Post Malone will release his long-awaited fourth album Twelve Carat Toothache, his first full-length effort since 2019’s Hollywood’s Bleeding. With the release date for Twelve Carat Toothache, which is June 3, rapidly approaching, Posty is understandably in full promotion mode for the album’s arrival. An example of that comes through his recent performance on the Selena Gomz-hosted episode of Saturday Night Live. It’s here that Posty performed “Cooped Up,” his newly-released record with Roddy Ricch, and “Love/Hate Letter To Alcohol,” a song that features Fleet Foxes’ Robin Pecknold.

Post Malone kicked off the night by performing “Cooped Up” alongside Roddy Ricch. The new song makes for the duo’s second collaboration following “Wow. (Remix)” back in 2019. Posty rocked a leather jack and leather pants to perform the song on the Studio 8H stage backed by orange and blue lighting before welcoming Roddy to join him. He returned later on the night to debut “Love/Hate Letter To Alcohol” in its entirety, a record he previously teased during an Instagram livestream. For that performance, he was surrounded by a choir dressed in black and white as Posty himself took center stage for an emotional set.

Post Malone Shared A Teaser Of His Collaboration With Robin Pecknold, ‘A Love/Hate Letter To Alcohol’

Anticipation around Post Malone’s next album is building, especially because the rapper finally confirmed a release date for the project earlier today. 12 Carat Toothache is slated to drop on 6/3, which is a little bit later than Post’s manager initially teased it would, but close enough to be in the general ballpark. Post also took to Instagram Live to let fans hear a bit of what he’s been working on, and true to form he has several collaborations in the works for the project. The most notable for indie fans, however, might be some harmonies from Robin Pecknold that show up on a song called “A Love/Hate Letter To Alcohol.”

Firstly, that’s one of the most relatable song titles I’ve ever encountered in my life, and secondly, Posty and Robin have already expressed a mutual admiration for each other over the years, so while it seems like a slightly strange pairing, it actually makes quite a lot of sense. Don’t forget that Post Malone has a country/folk streak within his own songwriting, and Pecknold, on the other hand, seems to be a pretty straight-ahead poptimist when it comes to melodies — and no matter what you think about Malone’s music, he’s got those done.

In the spring of 2021, Post Malone’s manager teased that the singer could drop two projects that same year. The releases would’ve been his first full-length efforts since 2019’s Hollywood’s Bleeding, but 2021 came and went without any projects from Posty. Thankfully for his fans, he did release two singles before the year came to a close, those being “One Right Now” with The Weeknd and “Motley Crew.” Earlier this month, Post’s manager announced that his fourth album Twelve Carat Toothache would arrive at some point next month. With May less than a week ago, Post took to Instagram Live to share some new details about the project.

During the livestream, Post played a snippet of “Happy,” his upcoming collaboration with Doja Cat, and also took a moment to praise her talents. “She is so incredible,” he said before pressing play on the track. “I am so blessed and so honored to be able to have worked with her.” Post also previewed his collaborations with Roddy Ricch and Robin Pecknold of Fleet Foxes, titled “Cooped Up” and “Love/Hate Letter To Alcohol” respectively. Before the livestream came to an end, Posty confirmed that Twelve Carat Toothache will feature 14 songs and guest appearances from The Weeknd, Doja Cat, Roddy Ricch, Robin Pecknold, and The Kid Laroi.

Kanye West Was Apparently In The Studio With Post Malone And Fleet Foxes’ Robin Pecknold

Kanye West is about a month removed from releasing Donda, but he’s not taking a break after his new album. Over the weekend, he was back in the studio, accompanied by a couple of big-time guests: Post Malone and Fleet Foxes’ Robin Pecknold.

A video of West and Malone in the studio surfaced, in which Malone is thoroughly enjoying Fleet Foxes’ “The Shrine / An Argument” as it plays over speakers. Furthermore, as Stereogum notes, Pecknold also shared a photo of himself and Malone, indicating that they were also together that night.

West and Pecknold have yet to appear on a song together, but Pecknold and Malone (a noted major Fleet Foxes fan) have struck up a friendship in recent years. In a 2020 interview, Pecknold noted that Malone nearly appeared on Fleet Foxes’ album Shore and said of Malone, “He’ll text me every once in a while and it’s always a really fun thing to receive.
