JP, feardorian, JaeyBxrd, Papo2oo4, & SVDP: Artists To Listen To Right Now

Every single month, HNHH comes through with a feature containing lesser-known artists that you need to check out right now. Overall, it is an attempt to help our readers expand their horizons and catch onto new artists before they blow up. Furthermore, sometimes, we steer our readers toward artists who they may have missed, despite their current virality. Whatever the case, discovering new music is a whole lot of fun, and in April, our staff got together to talk about some of their favorite under-the-radar releases of the last 30 days. From viral tracks to underground darlings, there is a lot of great music to get to.

JP – “Bad Bitty”

First up, we have JP, a college basketball player from Milwaukee who is making waves in the city’s burgeoning rap scene. Milwaukee rap has characterized itself with one word: “fun.” From catchy danceable tracks to some hilarious samples, artists from Wisconsin’s premiere city seem to be captivating audiences. JP is quintessential Milwaukee. From his extremely catchy bars to his infectious energy, it should come as no surprise that “Bad Bitty” is one of the most viral tracks on the internet right now. He’s become an internet meme, but he still gets talked about with reverence. If there was ever a song to reach “Song of the Summer” status in the middle of the Spring, it would be this one.

feardorian – “highschool”

FearDorian recently put out his debut album and it is getting some critical praise. There is very good reason for this. The Surf Gang collaborator has been making waves with a plethora of incredible tracks and beats that will make you feel like you are on a cloud. Overall, the artist is also a proficient MC who just makes you excited about the way they deliver their tracks. Not to mention, the artist has consistently taken risks with samples. For instance, Amy Winehouse has found her way onto some of FearDorian’s releases. It just goes to show that artists associated with the Milwaukee scene are making some of the most unique music in the United States.

Papo2oo4 – “Had To Ball”

Popo2oo4 is an artist who has been around for a while at this point. Overall, the New York MC has a unique delivery and style that will make you nostalgic for the early to mid-2000s. Even the visual for “Had 2 Ball” is a great example of this. While rapping in front of rims, YouTube commenters are reminded of the Midnight Club video games. However, even the style and beat selections will make you think of those same visual aesthetics. Nostalgia is a very powerful tool in terms of connecting with your audience, and Papo certainly has that in droves.

JaeyBxrd – “Cut Me Open”

JaeyBxrd is an artist who has been bubbling thanks to his unique ability to blend genres. Overall, there have always been artists who try to mix genres. However, JaeyBxrd does it in a way that makes you relive the glory days of early 2000s Post Grunge, and late 2010s SoundCloud rap. He’s one part Juice WRLD and another part Breaking Benjamin. It makes for a great mix of sounds, even if the music reviewer “intelligencia” might scoff at his mere existence. With the song “Cut Me Open,” JaeyBxrd makes an impact that will make you want to go back and play those PlayStation 2 era MX vs. ATV games. It’s a very specific reference, but when you listen to his music, you will understand.

SVDP – “WHIZTLA”

SVDP is a Toronto artist who has been working with plenty of other staples of the Canadian music scene. For instance, the artist recently collaborated with Backxwash and the producer LA+CH. In fact, SVDP got to link up with LA+CH on the track “WHIZTLA” which is an off-kilter banger. The song weaves in and out of calmer and sped-up flows, creating perfect contrasts from start to finish. Meanwhile, the production helps take the song to a new level. Overall, this is a song that you need to check out right now. Additionally, it should urge you to check out other artists within Canada, who are pushing boundaries in their field.

Let us know which of these songs was your favorite, in the comments section down below.

Democrats Announce Hip-Hop Task Force With The Black Music Action Coalition

The relationship between hip-hop and politics has always been a relatively strained one, but folks are working very hard today to rectify that history. Moreover, Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives announced a partnership with the Black Music Action Coalition (BMAC) on Wednesday (February 14) to launch the Congressional Hip-Hop Power and Justice Task Force. Its leaders include Reps. Jamaal Bowman (New York), Hank Johnson (Georgia), André Carson (Indiana), and Delia Ramirez (Illinois). Bowman in particular remarked how hip-hop is what made him a congressman, and underscored the task force’s mission to work with the culture to legislatively protect and support the art form, the Black community, and hip-hop’s wider members.

“[BMAC]’s mission is to work with business leaders and lawmakers to utilize the music industry’s influence to impact federal policies that address racial and social justice,” Willie “Prophet” Stiggers, the organization’s co-founder, remarked during a press conference. “The RAP Act is just one example of how aligning BMAC’s efforts in tandem with the Congressional Hip-Hop Task Force is a natural extension of Black Music Action Coalition’s work.

Jamaal Bowman Speaks On Congressional Hip-Hop Task Force: Watch

“[We’re] supporting solutions to mass incarceration, justice reform, and economic hardships disparately impacting marginalized communities…” Stiggers went on. “BMAC looks forward to centralizing our energy with the first-ever Hip-Hop Power and Justice Task Force to activate legislation that protects the Black community.” “Hip-hop has ingrained itself in our culture and continuously called upon us to fight for civil and racial justice,” Jamaal Bowman added. “Hip-hop is why I support the movement for reparations, an end to discrimination and corporate greed in the housing industry, and access to healthcare and economic opportunity for everyone.

“That is why I am proud to stand with my colleagues in bringing the advocacy and ideology of hip-hop to Congress in this moment and continue our urgent calls for peace and justice across the world,” he continued. This initiative also has the support of the non-profit organization Hip-Hop Caucus. Its CEO, Rev. Lennox Yearwood Jr., hopes that it will address struggles that Black, Latine, and indigenous communities face on a disproportionate level. Meanwhile, for more on the intersection of hip-hop and politics, come back to HNHH.

Joe Budden’s Rap Return Might Happen Soon, He Hints

Joe Budden hasn’t picked up the mic in a long time, deciding to further his media career within the culture and impact it positively from that perspective. While his track record isn’t perfect, just like anyone else’s in this field, it’s hard to argue against his knowledge, influence, and idiosyncratic framework through which he views hip-hop. However, the Slaughterhouse MC recently hinted on his podcast that all this might change soon. Moreover, Sunday’s conversation (November 26) saw him and his co-hosts discussed new music that week, including Kanye West and company’s new song “Vultures.” This is where Budden made his return to rap a possible reality in people’s minds.

Speaking on “Vultures,” Joe Budden said that he’s a big fan of the beat behind it, adding that it “fills his music appetite.” As discussion on the track was dying down, this is where he added some fuel to the speculative fire of the future of his rap career. “Don’t worry, I called Just Blaze the other day,” the New York media personality began. “I’m done talking about these rappers. I’ll do it myself, I’ll do it myself.”

Joe Budden Hints At Rap Comeback: Watch At The 1-Hour & 45-Minute Mark

When one of his co-hosts asked if this was a legitimate return to rap, he had the following answer. “I’ma listen to what Just Blaze has in there that might make somebody want to rap,” Joe Budden remarked. “I’m laying a 15-minute record for sale, $20. It just might be [an] EP but you gonna get this first track for $20.” While he clarified that he doesn’t have any concrete plans, it’s better than nothing. “Whenever that is I don’t want to supe fans up to think that that’s coming soon,” the 43-year-old went on. “Me and Just Blaze have real jobs. That’s what he said. He said, ‘Yo I’m busy with my real job right now.’ Like, ‘Me too!‘ This works out perfectly, great.”

Black Thought Has Lost Attachment To Kanye West’s Music

The Roots’ iconic rapper Black Thought had some opinions about Kanye West’s creative identity slipping away. In a recent interview with Pitchfork, he broke down some albums from legends OutKast, Kanye, A Tribe Called Quest, and more. His 50th birthday is on October 3 and he referred to albums that have really moved him and made him who he is today. They broke it down by starting at the age of five and advancing for another five years. However, his age 35 album that he selected to talk about had the juiciest quotes to dissect.

Black Thought chose one of Kanye’s many industry-shaking records, 808s & Heartbreak. It is infamously known for its mixed reviews from fans and the rap community alike. But, it will go down as of his best works of all time for its influence on so many artists. The Weeknd, Kid Cudi, and many other careers might not happen without 808s. Songs like “Heartless” which just went RIAA Diamond-certified about a week ago, are such iconic tracks that carry so much weight. However, Thought feels like Ye has lost his mystique since that time.

Black Thought Believes It’s “More Assembly-Line”

One of the reasons Thought details throughout his discussion about Ye is that he feels the personality is lacking. He says, “I connect with Kanye’s music less now. Maybe it’s because of the rate at which he’s been putting out art and having to keep up. I think his process has become more assembly-line.” He goes on, “I don’t know if anything’s lost, but what is sometimes compromised is the personality. The main person it’s supposed to be about is sometimes overshadowed by all these other writers, producers, and people who are contributing.” Most people will take this excerpt at face value, but could he be referring to the antics and comments he has made?

What are your thoughts on Black Thought’s comments about Kanye West’s music? Do you agree or disagree with him? Where do you stand with Kanye’s recent albums? We want to hear what you have to say, so be sure to leave all of your thoughts and opinions in the comments section below.
