Usher Is A Multigenerational Once-In-A-Generation Talent

The word “legend” gets thrown around too loosely these days — as do the epithets “G.O.A.T.” (“greatest of all time”), “icon,” and “generational talent.” All too often, they get applied to artists or athletes in the midst of a great, maybe even mind-blowing run. But they are also applied too quickly, before the true test of iconic status can really be weathered or overcome: Time. Runs end; even some of the most paradigm-shifting talents can come and go in the matter of months or just years. Perhaps they set the foundation for true greatness to stand on after them, and that should be noted, but they probably shouldn’t be remembered as pillars or exemplars of their craft.

Wednesday night at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California, Usher Raymond earned — or rather, proved that he long ago already earned — all-time status with the Los Angeles stop of his aptly-titled Past Present Future Tour.

Here’s a thought exercise: Think of Usher’s contemporaries in R&B or pop music — the Justin Timberlakes, the Tevin Campbells, the myriad of quartets, trios, and boy bands to have come and gone since Usher’s debut in 1994 with his self-titled album. Stars have fallen; controversies, both fabricated and substantiated, have stalled ascensions; many have reached dizzying heights but become untethered from the craftsmanship that made them. Even beyond just smooth vocalists, Usher stands more or less alone.

Sure, Snoop Dogg has become a titan of pop culture, but his last RIAA-certified album was 2008’s Ego Trippin’. He’s better known for sports commentary than music at this point. Jay-Z? Hasn’t made a new album since 2017’s 4:44 (critically hailed though it was). And a handful of Usher’s contemporaries are so much worse off at this point — especially this year — that it’s better not to mention them at all.

But Usher, who garnered his first Hot 100 No. 1 in 1997 with “Nice & Slow,” and whose string of Hot 100 hits continues to this day with his independent album Coming Home and its lead single “Good Good,” has nearly outlasted them all. He’s retained his radio relevance while becoming the sort of towering titan of pop culture capable of headlining the Super Bowl Halftime Show, which he did this year to tremendous acclaim, reminding doubters that he’s got almost 30 years worth of hits to draw from. He did just that at BET Awards in June as he was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

And he does it again on the Remy Martin-backed Past Present Future Tour, with a setlist reaching all the way back to his fresh-faced debut and running through R&B touchstones like “Burn,” “Lovers And Friends,” “My Way,” “Superstar,” “U Remind Me,” and “You Make Me Wanna…”; club classics like ““DJ Got Us Fallin’ In Love” and “Yeah!”; and the sports stadium staple “OMG.”

Wednesday night, Usher also showcased the depth of his Rolodex, employing comedic chops alongside a bare-chested Kevin Hart, who teased the audience with his own rendition of “Nice & Slow” before being given the tongue-in-cheek boot by his host. Breakout star Tommy Richman put in an appearance to chirp his way through his smash “Million Dollar Baby” before Usher’s spiritual ancestor Stevie Wonder took to his piano at center stage, with the star of the evening doing duets to “Ribbon In The Sky” and more. Who else has that kind of pull, plus the generosity to cede the spotlight to his inspirations?

What impressed me the most is that I saw Usher do nearly the same setlist — albeit with a shuffled song order — at his Las Vegas residency not a full year ago. His stage at Intuit Dome struck me as being far less elaborate than the stage at Dolby Live at Park MGM — it certainly never transformed into a scale replica of his hometown’s Magic City, opting for a more (ahem) stripped-down approach — yet his performance was no less engaging. I didn’t think he’d have the room to pull off his roller skating tricks, and yet, he did. The crowd was inarguably larger than the capacity at his theater show, yet even the rafters were rollicking to “There Goes My Baby” and “Climax.”

The new venue undoubtedly helped; at some point during the show, I texted my editor to request that I only cover concerts at Intuit Dome for the rest of my tenure at Uproxx. Yes, there’s a little homerism from a lifelong Clippers fan, but the building’s design, intended to highlight the partisanship of a basketball home game, also lends itself toward amazing acoustics that complement its state-of-the-art, brand-new sound system, and terrific sight lines, as even sitting at a right angle to the stage, budged up against The Wall (inspired by college arenas), allowed a fantastic view of the stage and its recesses.

But, honestly, Usher doesn’t really need the help. Even without the massive, cutting-edge production on display, without the fleet of rigorously conditioned dancers, without the laser lights, and without the double-digit costume changes he effected throughout the night, Usher would be the consummate performer. He’s not just a once-in-a-generation talent, he’s a multigenerational one. He’s got a massive past catalog to draw from, but he’s also a modern hitmaker and superstar — and like his hero Stevie, he’s likely to remain one for generations to come.

Usher Turns His Stage Into A Strip Club For Brooklyn Tour Stop

Usher is stunning every crowd he greets on his “Past Present Future” tour, and is even inspiring the crowd to take over the show and sing for him. But it’s not just a concert: it’s a 4AM party in the waviest strip club in the city… Or at least, that’s the vibe he wants to create with each tour stop. Moreover, for the singer’s first Brooklyn show at the Barclays Center on Friday (September 6), he turned part of the stage into a strip club, complete with a pole for a dancer to use. Taraji P. Henson, Victoria Monét, and Yung Miami were right there to throw some cash and have fun with the performers.

Of course, this is nothing new for Usher, who did this exact sort of homage during his Vegas residency, his Super Bowl halftime show, and more. Also, it’s exactly the kind of extravagance and fun-loving raunch that we expect from him, so this isn’t all too surprising. While it doesn’t make it any less entertaining, we can’t help but wonder what the Dallas native will do next during this trek. We know that he’s taken his time to greet familiar faces and old friends in the crowds, so we hope that there’s more wholesome stuff on the way.

Speaking of wholesome tour content, Usher also took some time during this Brooklyn show to shout out his “SOS (Sex On Sight)” collaborator, Victoria Monét. “Victoria, we love you, baby girl!” he told her in the stands before playing her hit song “On My Mama.” We can’t think of many other careers who have had a better past 48 months than the Atlanta native. So not only was this well-deserved, but we hope there’s more stuff like this to come.

All this being said, it’s not like every single part of this tour has been perfect. For example, after a particularly bizarre clip of Usher’s “Yeah!” performance went viral, people accused him of sending a clone onstage. It seems like the fanbase crossover between him and MF DOOM isn’t as small as you might think. Rest In Peace to The Villain.

Due to doctor ordered delays, Usher’s Past Present Future Tour didn’t start off on the right foot. However, the “Luckiest Man” singer has surely made up for hiccup.

Yesterday (September 6), during Usher’s first night in Brooklyn he brought a little piece of his seemingly second favorite hometown staple with him — strip clubs. While at the Barclays Center, Usher transferred the stage into his own mobile exotic peep show. Although this isn’t new by any means for Usher, just see his Las Vegas residency show, but this time he was along in his tantalizing quest.

Three leading ladies in their own right, Taraji P. Henson, Victoria Monét, and Yung Miami joined Usher for the sensual showcase. As the performer showed off her gymnast moves each lady threw money to show their mesmerized support (viewable here).

At one point, Victoria Monét even ever so slightly participated before allowing to professional to put it down (or up rather). Usher has a lot of tricks in his books but none quite like his featured supporting act.

Prior to the rated R demonstration, Usher took a moment to acknowledge his “SOS (Sex On Sight)” collaborator, Victoria’s breakout year. “We love you baby girl,” he said before paying her hit song “On My Mama” over the venue’s speakers (viewable here)

Usher’s Past Present Future Tour won’t officially wrap in the US until mid-November, so there’s no telling what else he has planned.

Usher Has Heartwarming Reaction To Spotting Free From “106 & Park” In Crowd

Last week, Usher kicked off his eagerly anticipated “Past Present Future” tour with an unforgettable performance in Washington, D.C. Originally scheduled to begin earlier this month, the tour was pushed back after the hitmaker suffered a neck injury during rehearsals. Luckily, it looks like he had a speedy recovery, and wasted no time getting back to giving fans what they love.

While Usher has already impressed countless supporters with his tour, he himself recently became starstruck onstage after spotting none other than Free Marie Wright in the crowd. In a clip from his recent stop in Boston, he’s seen putting the show on hold to give her a shoutout. “Hold on, hold on, hold on. Is that Free I see?” he asked, looking shocked. He then stepped down to greet her, putting his appreciation for the former 106 & Park host on full display.

Beantown I LOVE you back infinity 🙋🏽‍♀️💚 Thank YOU and Goodnight,” she captioned the post. As expected, fans in The Shade Room‘s comments section are commending Usher for giving Free the shoutout she deserves. “FREE is a legend and nobody matches what her and AJ did for music culture on 106,” one Instagram user writes. “She’s a living legend !!!” another notes.

Fans certainly can’t blame Usher for doing a double-take, and loved to see him giving Free her flowers. Usher Fan Loses It During Shirtless Performance Of “Climax”

A video of a fan’s reaction to Usher performing his iconic 2012 Looking 4 Myself single, “Climax,” is going viral on social media. In the clip, the fan dramatically screams out “Oh my God” over and over again while losing it for the singer. When Usher caught wind of the video, he replied: “thank u for coming..,” with a laughing emoji. He performed the track during his ongoing Past Present Future Tour.

Fans had plenty of jokes about the incident when The Shade Room shared it on Instagram. “Talking bout ‘thank you for coming.’ Oh she came alright,” one fan wrote. Another joked: “His wife so mature id cancle the whole tour.” One more remarked: “He said thank you for coming. Chile my mind went somewhere else.”

The viral clip comes after Usher had to postpone several concerts, earlier this month, due to injury. “Earlier this week, I suffered an injury to my neck while rehearsing to provide my fans with the greatest USHER show of all time,” he explained in a statement at the time. “My hope was that with physical therapy and medical treatment, I would be able to overcome the injury and be ready for opening night. Unfortunately, the injury has not healed yet, and my doctors have instructed me not to perform any shows this week.” He ended up moving three shows in Atlanta back to December and kicked off the tour in Washington D.C. on August 20.

Usher Unveils Why He Had To Postpone His Early Tour Stops

USHER had fans in an uproar yesterday over his surprise postponement of the inaugural show for his Past Present Future tour. He did so just hours before he was supposed to hit the stage in Atlanta, Georgia. The R&B superstar sent a few painful paragraphs to explain the reason for this. “For my 30-plus year career, 100% of my blood, sweat and tears has gone into putting on the best performance and creating a memorable experience for my fans. I have every intention of doing that for this tour as well. Which is why I have to postpone tonight’s show and reschedule it for a later date to give my body a second to rest and heal”.

People were suspecting that he was referring to all of his previous gigs such as the Super Bowl, his Las Vegas, Nevada residency, and etc. This had some fans understanding where he was coming from, especially since they recognize how much work he puts into his shows. Still, though, others felt blindsided. But it seems we now have specifics. According to a report from Bossip, USHER released yet another statement in which he revealed that he suffered a neck injury of sorts. “Earlier this week, I suffered an injury to my neck while rehearsing to provide my fans with the greatest USHER show of all time”, he began.

USHER Moves Tour Dates Around Following Neck Injury Announcement

“My hope was that with physical therapy and medical treatment, I would be able to overcome the injury and be ready for opening night. Unfortunately, the injury has not healed yet, and my doctors have instructed me not to perform any shows this week”. Thankfully, though, if he stays the course on the proper recovery track, he can hit the stage in Washington, D.C., Tuesday, August 20. Furthermore, the first three shows in Atlanta that were going to kick off the tour are rescheduled. The August 14 show will now be December 9. August 16 is being pushed back to December 10. Then, the performance on the 17 is going to take place on December 12.

What are your thoughts on USHER revealing that a neck injury was the reason for postponing the early Atlanta tour dates? Do you think the fans that were bashing him should apologize? How do you feel about the timing for the rescheduled shows? Are you planning on going to one of the performances? We would like to hear what you have to say, so leave your thoughts in the comments. Additionally, always keep it locked in with HNHH for all of the latest news surrounding USHER. Finally, stay with us for everything else going on in the music world.

How Long Is Usher’s ‘Past Present Future’ Tour Delayed?

Usher recently shared the trailer for his Rendezvous In Paris concert film, which will enjoy a limited theatrical run from September 12 to 15. That exciting news was counterbalanced by an unfortunate update pertaining to Usher’s Past Present Future tour.

On Wednesday, August 14, Usher postponed his opening night. The tour was scheduled to open with three consecutive shows at State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia on August 14, 16, and 17.

How Long Is Usher’s Past Present Future Tour Delayed?

“For my 30-plus year career, 100% of my blood, sweat and tears has gone into putting on the best performance and creating a memorable experience for my fans,” Usher posted across his social media accounts. “I have every intention of doing that for this tour as well, which is why I have to postpone tonight’s show and reschedule it for a later date to give my body a second to rest and heal.”

He continued, “You’re still going to get a bit of the past, some of the present, and a unique look into the future on the rescheduled date, but you’ll also be getting 100% of me. The last thing I want to ever do is disappoint you, the fans who have been eagerly waiting for this tour to start. However, I wouldn’t be the entertainer that I am if I can’t physically give you my best. My team will be sharing news of the rescheduled date soon. I can’t wait to celebrate this legacy with you. Usher.”

As of this writing, it’s unclear whether Usher will go on as scheduled on Friday, August 16. Usher has not said otherwise, so it would seem like opening night will happen on Friday. The rescheduled August 14 date has not yet been announced.

An unnamed representative for Usher confirmed to Variety that Usher “needs time to heal from an unspecified injury.”
