Ava DuVernay Parties With Taraji P. Henson, Samuel L. Jackson, David Oyelowo & More For “Origin” Film

While her latest film, Origin, encompasses a more somber tone, Ava DuVernay was all smiles as she celebrated the feature. Origin arrived a month ago, on December 8, but the film remains a hot topic among cinephiles. DuVernay’s illustrious filmography spans movies focusing on Black culture, community, racism, and injustice—and Origin isn’t for the weak.

Origin is based on Isabel Wilkerson’s bestseller Caste: The Origin of Our Discontents. The Pulitzer Prize winner released her much-talked-about book in 2020, which centers on her personal journey. Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor stars as Wilkerson in the biographical film that begins with the murder of Trayvon Martin in 2012. Likening racism to India’s caste system, DuVernay, through her lens and a cast of characters, weaves through cultural experiences from the Holocaust to the Slave Trade, and examines the links between Nazi Germany and American laws. Although the film may be on the heavier end of the spectrum, audiences praised DuVernay’s latest efforts.

Earl Sweatshirt Claims Tyler, The Creator Is Responsible For Drake Lean Meme

Earl Sweatshirt and his frequent collaborator, the legendary producer The Alchemist, recently sat down for an episode of Complex’s GOAT Talk series. In it, they discussed the best (and worst) rap trends, animals, candies, and a whole lot more. However, when asked what the best meme of all time is, the Odd Future affiliate actually got to chronicle some meme history with a very interesting but fitting revelation. If you weren’t around back in the day, Drake memes used to take a very different and overly macho shape, unfairly clowning him for being soft. But Earl claimed that Tyler, The Creator created one of the first memes to blow up around the OVO star that weren’t within this flawed framework.

“Tyler, The Creator started the Drake meme,” Earl Sweatshirt maintained on the program. “I was there. We seen the picture. I think Tyler cut it out, he put it on something, he put it up. By the morning, it was, like, [viral].” Of course, given that the IGOR creative is one of the funniest rappers to ever touch a mic, it’s no surprise that he had a hand in one of the Internet’s favorite comedy pastimes.

Earl Sweatshirt Teaches Meme History About Drake & Tyler, The Creator On GOAT Talk

Furthermore, we wonder if Drake had any sort of significant reaction to this revelation. After all, he and Tyler, The Creator have a pretty interesting relationship, one that’s mostly behind the scenes but has popped out every once in a while. Most infamously, Tyler brought Drizzy out as a special guest at his Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival in 2019, and fans appeared to boo him offstage because they were expecting Frank Ocean. The Hawthorne native mentioned the large payout he had for Drake on “LUMBERJACK,” and they have plenty of overlap as far as their inner circles and industry associates these days.

In addition, the 6 God posted himself wearing an IGOR chain on his IG Story last year, so clearly there’s still some love there. Many fans might not think there’s much reason for them to associate, since they are in such different lanes. But such is the unitary and community-building power of memes. Cardi B Clears Up Her Comments On Hip-Hop’s Origin & On Needing Writers

Cardi B’s gotten her fair share of flack for her place within hip-hop, whether those conversations are legitimate or purely speculative. For example, many take issue with her requesting assistance in writing her material, which doesn’t fit the authentic and personal rap formula. Another big point of contention came up at the 2023 MTV VMAs, where she stood by the Bronx as the genre’s origin and people thought she was personally appropriating that accolade. These topics stir up a lot of conversation online, and the 30-year-old often jumps in to address them. This time around, it was on The Neighborhood Talk‘s Instagram page’s comments section, and she came to set the record straight.

“Ya just be wanting to disagree with everything I say but facts are facts like google it,” Cardi B wrote. “Where did hip-hop start at.. THE BRONX!!! Where I’m from? Not the Caribbean island hip-hop came from talking about the struggle and thats something I def lived so how that’s not my culture??? How can you tell me what I do or what I lived.. culture is literally the environment of what you came up in.”

Cardi B Clarifies Her Comments On The Bronx Birthing Hip-Hop

Elsewhere in another post, the proud Bronx native tied these comments into the perception that she’s less valid as an MC because of other writers being on her tracks. “I started music before LHH and wrote about MY struggles and life as a dancer,” Cardi B expressed. “Go listen to them mixtapes. Also, I went to school for musical theatre and technology.. just because somebody might help me with a hook means nothing. Look at all ya fav artists credits they all do receive some type of help.”

The Bronx Native Speaks On Rappers Having Writers

Meanwhile, that’s not the only criticisms that she responded to this week. The “Bongos” hitmaker thinks that Joe Budden has a personal problem with her, as shown by his critique of her latest single with Megan Thee Stallion. Although the rapper and media personality said that people took his words too far when reporting on them, he stood by his thoughts. Grandmaster Flash Slams People Who Misrepresent Hip-Hop’s True History

When people these days think of hip-hop, the central figure that pops up in people’s minds nine times out of ten is the rapper. However, those same people might not be aware of the genre’s true origin, something that Grandmaster Flash is tired of happening. Moreover, the legendary DJ, turntable innovator, and contemporary ran fan recently spoke to Sway and his co-hosts on Shade 45. During their conversation, he spoke on how the idea of a rapper first came about for him. In addition, he lamented how a lot of media and members of hip-hop culture these days aren’t fully aware, or at least don’t highlight, how it all started.

“‘Can you verbalize to this?’” Grandmaster Flash began, telling a story of how people tried to actually vocalize or sing along to the kinds of beats that he was putting together. “Many people failed, and there was one gentleman, just one, who had this nursery rhyme type of style. And we met, briefly. And then, when I went to go visit my girlfriend, he was there. He was dating the older sister, and I was dating the younger one. So, we meet again. And the next time I played in the park, I ask him to try. And this is where the rapper was born.

Grandmaster Flash’s Remarks On How Hip-Hop Really Started

“His name was Keith Wiggins, also known as ‘Cowboy,’” Grandmaster Flash continued. “The rest of the Five is history. But I just wanted to say, like, thank you for this, Sway. Yes, I know we have a lot to talk about. But hip-hop is 50 years old. And do you know, out of all the interviews I’ve been listening to, nobody’s talking about where this started!

“Nobody’s talking about the DJs,” he concluded. “Nobody’s talking about the incredible producers, who put these incredible songs together. Because, I’m telling you, I’ll put my life on this, that any one of you rappers could not have written these dope a** rhymes [without them].” For more news on Grandmaster Flash and more chunks of important hip-hop history, stick around on HNHH.
