Roddy Ricch’s Something In The Water Festival Performance Salutes Lil Keed, Nipsey Hussle, And More

Hip-hop fans have been through a lot in the last few years. There hasn’t been a single year in the past half-decade that hasn’t seen the death of one of rap’s most prominent rising stars. In 2019, Nipsey Hussle was shot and killed in front of his Marathon Clothing store in Los Angeles. Later that same year, Juice WRLD overdosed coming off a flight at Midway International Airport in Chicago. More recently, Drakeo The Ruler was stabbed to death backstage during Once Upon A Time in LA Festival, and Lil Keed died of apparent kidney failure earlier this year.

Last night, during his set at Something In The Water Festival, Compton rapper Roddy Ricch paid homage to these artists and more with a tender performance of his breakout hit “Die Young.” Images of his fallen peers and contemporaries flashed behind him as he crooned the all-too-fitting lyrics of his song’s chorus: “Tell me, why the legends always gotta die quick?”

Roddy was at least partly associated with many of the rappers to whom he paid homage Friday night; he won a Grammy with Nipsey Hussle for their song “Racks In The Middle,” while Keed was a member of YSL Records, a frequent Roddy collaborator via Gunna and Young Thug. Roddy shouted out Gunna on Instagram, calling for his release from Fulton County jail as he awaits trial on racketeering charges with the rest of the YSL crew.

J.Stone Enlists All-Star Cast For ‘The Definition Of Sacrifice’ LP

J. Stone TDOS Artwork

The founder and CEO of 25/8 No Breaks Inc and a founding member of All Money In Records, J. Stone has been overcoming adversity his entire life.

From the onset of his life, he has been confronted with loss. At three, his mother passed. An aunt became his guardian before succumbing to cancer. One year later, J lost his brother Alvin to street violence. Throughout his teens and twenties, he endured a revolving door of incarcerations, group homes, and getting shot. Meanwhile, he connected with an associate from the neighborhood who shared his passion, goals, and fierce work ethic: Nipsey Hussle.

For well over a decade, the Crenshaw native has put in undisputed work on the mic. However, his association is forever closest to longtime friend and business partner Nipsey Hussle. Grinding away out of nothing with a matched drive to win, J Stone reached over 10 million views and streams with “The Marathon Continues” tribute. Adding to an album series that Nipsey architected during their All Money In No Money Out days

As Nip’ recalled on J Stone’s 2019 tribute “The Marathon Continues,” they recorded each other in Hussle’s makeshift bedroom studio. They worked side by side on J’s The Grind Don’t Stop, Nipsey’s Bullets Ain’t Got No Name, Vol. 2.  and J added a standout solo song, “All Get Right,” too Nipsey’s revolutionary Crenshaw.

After shining on one of the highest-profile mixtapes of all time, J. Stone went deeper.  The Coldest Story Ever25 / 8 No Brakes, and Neighborhood Watch became catalog milestones, which helped All Money partner with a major label, Nipsey then urged J to create the series that would propel him further. Although Nip’ was unable to see it, The Definition Of Loyalty met that challenge. After nearly quitting music after the tragic 2019 loss of Nipsey, J. Stone let hurt become hunger, evident on The Definition Of Pain (2020). Both albums peaked at #2 on the iTunes Hip Hop charts.

Now, J. Stone’s new album, The Definition Of Sacrifice, (which completes his “Definition” trilogy) raises the stakes. The album features appearances and production from Young Dolph (RIP), Swizz Beatz, Jadakiss, Mozzy, OT Genasis, Styles P, K Camp and Lumidee.

“I feel like I’m one of the dopest lyricists from L.A. and The Definition Of Sacrifice will prove it.  I am South Central’s advocate” J. Stone asserts.

Nipsey Hussle Murder Trial Defense Opening Statements: “Not Premeditated, Case Of Heated Passion”

Eric Holder Nipsey Hussle Murder Trial

Opening statements took place today in the trial of the man accused of killing Nipsey Hussle, born Ermias Joseph Asghedom. Hussle was shot in 2019 outside of his Los Angeles clothing store,The Marathon at the age of 33.

A jury selected on Monday is set to hear the case against accused killer, 32-year-old, Eric Ronald Holder Jr. Deputy District Attorney John McKinney says Hussle accused Holder of snitching the day of the murder. Holder returned to the scene minutes later, shooting the beloved rapper eleven times.

McKinney stated during his opening statement there’s “no doubt” the suspect knew in advance that he would kill Hussle. “He clearly thought about what he was going to do before he did it.”

He then described the sequence of events, including showing jurors horrific videos and photos of the shooting.

Holder’s defense Attorney Aaron Jansen said the first-degree murder and attempted murder charges are excessive. Jansen argued the killing was not premeditated, and the shooting of the other two men present were not Eric Holder’s intention. Holder faces life in prison if convicted.

Attorney Jansen told jurors in the opening statements that Holder was “triggered” from being called a snitch and “didn’t have time to cool off” before he gunned down Hussle. Adding, “this is a case of heated passion.”

There is speculation that Holder’s defense will make his mental health an issue during his trial. Jansen has said previously “One of the things affecting him [in March 2019] was that his mother had just passed away. He was pretty despondent.”

Holder fled the scene after firing multiple shots at the “Victory Lap” rapper. Caught on surveillance, he was arrested two days later.

Nipsey Hussle left behind his daughter Emani Asghedom, 13 and son Kros Ermias Asghedom, 5 with whom he shares with actor, and longtime partner Lauren London. He won two Grammys almost a year after his murder. Hussle was signed to Jay-Z’s RocNation.

Nipsey Hussle’s Killer Denies That The Rapper’s Murder Was ‘Premeditated And Deliberate’

This past March marked three years since Nipsey Hussle was tragically killed outside of his Marathon store on Crenshaw and Slauson. Eric Holder, the man accused of killing Nipsey, was arrested two days after the shooting and charged with one count of murder, two counts of attempted murder, two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, and one count of felony possession of a firearm. Holder pled not guilty to all of the aforementioned charges as he continued to await trial, but that wait proved to be longer than expected as the trial’s start date was repeatedly delayed.

Finally, things got underway today and during the opening statements, the prosecution, led by Deputy District Attorney John McKinney, alleged that Holder’s shooting of Nipsey was “premeditated and deliberate.” “You’re going to hear and see evidence that he had plenty of opportunity to think about what he was going to do before he did it,” McKinney said according to Rolling Stone. “From the time he got out of the car and all the way back to that strip mall and walked up to those gentlemen and started shooting and shooting and shooting.”

Holder’s lawyer Aaron Jansen denies the claim that the shooting was premeditated and deliberate. However, McKinney looked to prove that this was false as he played a black-and-white video of the shooting in court on Wednesday. It showed Nipsey and Holder’s initial interactions, Holder leaving and then returning to fire gunshots at Nipsey and two others.

“You’ll see him retreat back after a few shots, and then he goes back and he shoots some more, and he retreats back, and then he goes back, and he shoots even more,” McKinney told the jury.

Opening statements were delivered hours after a full jury and six alternate jurors were selected for the trial.

The Jury In Nipsey Hussle’s Murder Trial Has Been Selected

The trial against Eric Holder, the man accused of shooting and killing Nipsey Hussle, is about to commence, and the jury has been selected according to Los Angeles’ ABC News affiliate. The jurors were sworn in on Monday, with the six alternate jurors chosen on Tuesday should any of the originals need to be replaced. The jury will hear opening statements today.

The trial has been a long time coming, with multiple delays due to COVID-19, Holder’s own stubbornness, and changes to personnel including the assigned judge and Holder’s defense lawyer. Holder pled not guilty to one count of murder, two counts of attempted murder, two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, and one count of felony possession of a firearm in the case back in 2019.

Holder was accused of murdering the Los Angeles rapper in front of his Marathon Clothing store on the corner of the streets Nipsey avidly affirmed in his music: Crenshaw and Slauson. Prosecutors say that Nipsey and Holder had a disagreement, and Holder returned to the store, firing with two handguns, hitting Nipsey and a pair of bystanders. Nipsey was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Watch Nipsey Hussle Develop A Marijuana Strain In The New ‘The Marathon (Cultivation)’ Documentary

Nipsey Hussle’s death shook up the world three years ago and every effort to honor his legacy has provided some needed comfort or joy. The latest piece of content surrounding the late Los Angeles native comes in the form of a YouTube documentary called The Marathon (Cultivation), which follows the Victory Lap artist throughout the process of he and his brother, Samiel Asghedom, developing their own marijuana strain called Marathon OG. The documentary arrives just under a month preceding the June 18 opening of The Marathon (Collective), a cannabis retail store in Los Angeles.

Though he is not here with us physically, rappers, celebrities and companies at every turn have paid homage to the trailblazer and kept his memory alive. Hussle posthumously earned two Grammy awards in 2020 for “Racks In The Middle” (Best Rap Performance) with Hit-Boy and Roddy Ricch, and DJ Khaled’s “Higher” (Best Rap/Sung Collaboration) alongside John Legend.

Hussle was fatally slain at the end of March 2019 in front of his Marathon Clothing store in Los Angeles. The rapper had just reached the peak of his career with the success and critical acclaim of his 2018 debut album Victory Lap.

Snoop Dogg Credits Nipsey Hussle For Writing His Song ‘Ten Toes Down’

The late Nipsey Hussle added much to the music industry, his community, and the world, which is why he is so sorely missed. One contribution people may not have been aware of is his songwriting for a certain fellow West Coast legend. Snoop Dogg jumped on Instagram yesterday (May 19) with a blunt in hand rocking out to his record “Ten Toes Down” off of 2016’s Coolaid. In the caption, he reveals the song was written by Hussle.

The two had a longstanding relationship, previously collaborating on “Upside Down,” “Gangstas Life,” and “Question #1.” Nipsey Hussle was fatally slain in March 2019 in front of his Marathon store. Snoop Dogg spoke at the Victory Lap rapper’s memorial at Staples Center, citing they were drawn to one another for their spirits of love.

Snoop Dogg is gearing up for the release of his next album A Death Row Summer, leading off with the single “Touch Away” featuring October London. There is no set date, but the “Gin And Juice” artist says it is “coming soon.” A Death Row Summer will be the second Death Row release of 2022 after Snoop Dogg claimed the rights to the label back in February.
