Nike Confirms Relaunch of Kobe Bryant Brand

The estate of Kobe Bryant parted ways with Nike in April 2021. It was fairly shocking news, with Nike having worked with the NBA legend since 2003. However, the relationship had been strained since Kobe’s retirement in 2016. Sales had stagnated, and Nike’s marketing team had shifted focus to the signature brands of active NBA players.

Things had gotten bad enough that in December 2020, venture capitalist Shervin Pishevar revealed that he had been in talks with Bryant to launch a player-owned brand called Mamba. Reportedly, things had progressed to the point where Pishevar had seen mockups for a potential debut shoe in the Mamba line. After the contract expired, Nike has released a handful of lines. Namely, these were the Gigi Bryant-inspired retros of the Kobe 4 and Kobe 6. A release of a new Kobe 8 all-white variant was expected later in 2023. However, it appears that it is the start of something much bigger for the relationship.

Nike CEO Confirms Return Of Kobe Brand

Speaking on a Q4 earning call, Nike CEO John Donahue confirmed that the Kobe 8 release was just the start. In fact, Nike was looking at the launch of a new era of Kobe shoes. “It’s going to be an exciting summer as we set the stage to relaunch the Kobe brand in advance of Kobe Day on 8.24,” Donahue said. While further details about what the “relaunch” entails in the long run, it is likely that Nike will be investing more in the Kobe brand going forward.

Ja Morant Receives Support From Nike Following Suspension

Ja Morant has been suspended for the first 25 games of the 2023-24 season. The punishment will likely sideline Morant until early December. Subsequently, Morant issued a statement apologizing for his actions. “I’m spending the offseason and my suspension continuing to work on my own mental health and decision making. I’m also going to be training so that I’m ready to go when I can be back on the court,” the statement said in part. However, some have met his words with skepticism.

Morant’s suspension, which stems from an incident in May in which Morant flashed a gun on Instagram Live, has also caught the attention of the sneaker world. Days after the incident, Nike removed any trace of Morant’s various sneakers from their website. However, about a week later, Morant’s “Ja 1 Hunger” sold out in minutes. Now that Morant has been formally punished, Nike has also commented on where they stand with the player.

Nike Backs Morant

Nike officially voiced their support for Morant in the hours after his suspension was revealed. “We are pleased that Ja is taking accountability and prioritizing his well-being. We will continue to support him on and off the court,” the company said in a statement shared by ESPN‘s Ramona Shelburne. Nike has been Morant’s official shoe partner since his 2019 debut. Furthermore, Morant’s initial contract with Nike was reportedly worth somewhere in the region of $12 million.

However, Nike’s response has not been well-received by a number of fans. Some have pointed to the fact that Nike dropped Kyrie Irving after his anti-Semitism scandal. This is being compared to Morant’s numerous off-court issues over the past year. Others pointed out that the statement was likely cover for Nike to avoid admitting that Morant is simply too profitable of a brand to cut ties with. Do you think Nike was right to stick with Morant? Let us know in the comments. Follow all the latest sports and sneakers news here at HotNewHipHop.

Travis Scott is currently gearing up to release his new album UTOPIA very soon. Overall, fans are very excited about the impending drop of this project. Although there is no timetable for its release, there are certainly quite a few teasers going around. Many believe it could be coming as soon as the end of this month. However, Travis himself has yet to actually confirm this. Instead, people are just making guesses, while also hoping that he will bless us with some summer jams.

Additionally, Travis Scott has his only line of sneakers with Nike and Jordan Brand. Over the years, he has delivered some truly special offerings. For instance, he has the Nike SB Dunk Low, a few great Air Jordan 1 Lows, a fantastic Air Jordan 1, and then his Air Jordan 4 and 6 offerings as well. Now, however, he is teasing a return of the Nike Mac Attack. For those who don’t know, this was a signature shoe worn by tennis legend John McEnroe in 1984. The shoe is making a comeback, and a lot of it is thanks to La Flame.

Travis Scott Hits The Court With Tennis Legend John McEnroe In Nike’s Campaign For The Mac Attack Sneaker

Nike bringing back one of its classic sneakers, the Nike Mac Attack — the signature model worn by tennis legend John McEnroe — and has tapped one of its key collaborators to make the re-release even more special. The 1984 sneaker is being redesigned for Travis Scott with his trademark reversed Swoosh.

Travis was seen performing in his updated Mac Attacks in May, and today, the NikeSportswear Instagram account began the official rollout with a genuinely stylish print ad layout featuring the rapper and the tennis star side-by-side in tailored suits and Travis on the court taking a two-handed forehand in a white Nike windbreaker and shorts combo (I, for one, would love to find out the results of that).

A detail of the ad Travis Scott fans might appreciate is his briefcase, which bears the scrawl “Utopia” — the name of Travis’ long-awaited comeback album, which he’s been teasing for the better part of the past two years. While anticipation for the album is sky-high among Scott’s diehards, it was set back by the tragedy at his Astroworld Festival in 2021, which generated nearly 5,000 injury claims in addition to ten deathsand prompted the rapper to spend much of last year lying low.

Travis was said to have recently played the album for his hometown Houston Astros, implying that it could be nearing release. With Nike helping to raise his profile to pre-Astroworld levels, it could mean that Utopia‘s release is imminent. Meanwhile, the Mac Attacks have an official release date of June 23 — although the remixed Travis Scott signature version has not been announced.

Nike Air More Uptempo Revealed In “Coconut Milk” And “Navy” Colorway

One of the more underappreciated Nike shoes would have to be the Nike Air More Uptempo. Overall, this is an amazing sneaker that a lot of fans absolutely love. However, it is also quite polarizing due to the chunky and air bubble design. Simply put, these are not for everyone, and they never have been. That said, the shoe has been around since 1996 and it doesn’t seem to be going anywhere. There is a subset of sneakerheads who have nostalgia for these, and each new colorway is a reminder of those glory years.

Interestingly enough, the Nike Air More Uptempo still gets new colorways every now and then. Although it may not be a lot, fans definitely try to cherish these new releases. In 2023, we have seen a couple of Uptempo models thus far. With summer on the horizon, there are a ton of fans out there who are ready for more. Well, it seems like Nike is about to deliver just that. Below, you can find a new Uptempo that is covered in “Coconut Milk” and “Midnight Navy.”

Firstly, the upper of the shoe mostly has that beige coconut milk aesthetic we just mentioned. Moreover, we get some navy blue on the air bubbles on the sides that spell out “Air.” It makes for a very nice look and these colors blend quite nicely together. Additionally, the tongue and the midsole are white for good measure. On the whole, this is just a solid offering from Nike.

For now, this shoe does not have a release date associated with it. However, it is rumored to be dropping later this year for a price of $170 USD.
