While it’s barely been a month since his last project, the Louisiana hitmaker is nothing if not prolific. In fact, there might even be multiple projects on the way. Another phrase tossed around with AI YoungBoy 3 is “Don’t try this at home,” which the label captioned their Story post with. “‘Don’t try this at home’ then AI Youngboy 3 album on the way,” the post read.

Furthermore, that phrase could refer to either YB’s knife-throwing skills or a recent interaction with Joe Budden. The MC and media commentator said he doesn’t believe Youngboy’s recent statements about retiring his violent lyricism and lifestyle. “I don’t believe one f***in’ word of any of that s**t,” he remarked. “I laughed every time that s**t popped up on my phone. Get the f**k outta here,” going on to call the Top rapper’s words a marketing play. After Joe’s comments, Never Broke Again’s Instagram page posted a cryptic picture of Youngboy, potentially the cover art. “Tell @joebudden ‘Don’t try this at home’ who ready?” the caption read.

Meanwhile, the 23-year-old spoke on his changing perspective on violence during a rare Billboard interview. “I think about how many lives I actually am responsible for when it comes to my music,” he expresseded at the time. “How many girls I got feeling like if you don’t go about a situation that your boyfriend’s bringing on you in his way, you’re wrong? How many people have put this s**t in their ears and actually went and hurt someone? Or how many kids felt like they needed to tote a gun and walked out the house and toted it the wrong way? Now he’s fixing to sit there and do years of his life that he can’t get back.”

Quando Rondo pays homage to his late friend in his new single “Long Live Pabb.”
This week, the Georgia rapper unveiled his latest single in dedication to Lul Pab. “Long Live Pabb” showcases Quando Rondo’s vulnerability even further as he reflects on the passing of his friend. However, the song also looks at the dangers that follow rappers, especially those with ties to the streets. He expresses remorse for not riding in bulletproof vehicles while also reflecting on what would’ve gone differently.
“Long Live Pabb” is a direct response to the August 2022 shooting that left his associate dead. Rumors initially surfaced surrounding a shooting in Los Angeles that involved Rondo. At the time, rumors suggested that he was injured. However, his team later clarified that he left the scene unscathed.

“Quando was involved in a shooting yesterday evening [Friday] which resulted in the untimely death of another’s young man’s life; he himself didn’t sustain any injuries during the shooting and is safe,” a statement from Quando’s team read.
However, police said that Quando Rondo was the initial target of the shooting.
Despite the attempt on his life, Quando Rondo continued to pump out a significant amount of music. He teamed up with NBA Youngboy for their joint project, 3860, along with dishing out singles like “Cream Soda” and “War Baby.” His last solo project, Still Taking Risks, dropped in 2021.

Nevertheless, that hasn’t stopped YoungBoy from getting in on the fun, too. In the lead-up to his Sincerely, Kentrell album in 2021, he commissioned several “YB Better” billboards across the United States.
Despite the annoying nature of his infamous tagline, YoungBoy Never Broke Again has repeatedly proven he’s better than his competition. With four Billboard 200 chart-toppers on his rapidly growing resume, he is easily one of his generation’s top commercial performers. On the contrary, YoungBoy also doesn’t even seem too concerned with the charts. Last year, the Baton Rouge native sporadically released eight projects, and his fans ate them up with ravenous excitement. Without a doubt, the 23-year-old rapper stayed on top of his game by rewarding his cult following with endless material. Still, dropping projects nonstop can be a death sentence, and the threat of listener fatigue undoubtedly loomed over the horizon.
Nevertheless, NBA YoungBoy stormed into 2023 by announcing his first new album of the year. Then, on Friday, January 6, he delivered I Rest My Case.

For his fifth album, YoungBoy made the brilliant creative decision to distinguish his new music from his prolific 2022 output. However, he did so by adopting a sound that’s alien to his discography yet all too familiar to rap fans. Shockingly, I Rest My Case heavily borrows from the alternative, hyper-digital, and punk-rap soundscape of Playboi Carti’s Whole Lotta Red. In fact, one could go as far as to argue that YoungBoy may even be trolling Carti’s once-polarizing style. The cover art features graphics that are practically synonymous with Carti’s fanbase, from bats and coffins to crosses and skulls. In addition to its nearly monochromatic artwork, some of the album’s track titles seem to address the connection to WLR. Obviously, “Red” is the most eye-catching song title, but “Bitch Yeah” also feels obnoxiously reminiscent of Mario Judah’s “Bih Yah.”
It’s almost like YoungBoy is trying to one-up Carti, who’s easily one of his biggest competitors, on his own turf. As a result, I Rest My Case begs an interesting question: Is YBtruly better than any artist he’s put against?
Although it’s a brave and ambitious effort from the Never Broke Again head honcho, I Rest My Case doesn’t yield the definitive answer its title alludes to.
On one hand, YoungBoy’s new album makes for an easy and entertaining listen. The excitement of hearing one of Hip-Hop’s most prominent young acts dive head-first into a new sonic direction pairs well with the comfort of returning to one of rap’s most thrilling new subgenres. In fact, there are several times throughout I Rest My Case where YoungBoy proves that he could excel in the space if he so chose to.

On tracks “Louie V,” “Just Like Me,” and “Not My Friend,” he sounds like he’s been doing this forever. In addition to those standout tracks, the skits (“Top Girls,” “Top Haters,” and “I Love YB”) bring IRMC all together.
Still, it would be a lofty statement to say he makes the best version of this style of music. While there are moments when one could entertain the thought of YoungBoy doing Carti better than Carti, they are fleeting. Furthermore, IRMC would largely benefit from a beefed-up presence of songs that feel more authentic to YB’s artistry. Few tracks — including “Double Cup” and “Same Thang” — feel like YoungBoy songs, which diminishes the album’s sense of identity.
Thus, the album’s strengths directly lead to its most glaring flaws. Love him or hate him, YoungBoy Never Broke Again has consistently been one of the most unique new acts. Without a doubt, many up-and-coming rappers have morphed into mini NBA YoungBoys due to the young rapper’s success and influence. Balanced against the originality of his past work, I Rest My Case feels like a step backward. Hip-Hop has progressed so far that albums like Whole Lotta Red and IRMC can thrive, but some things haven’t changed. For instance, biting still remains a cardinal sin in rap to this day. So while the idea of YoungBoy cosplaying as Carti sounds entertaining, the album feels antithetical to everything that YB has built for himself.
In conclusion, I Rest My Case is a solid and refreshing new offering from NBA YoungBoy, but it’s simply too derivative to stand on its own as a great album.

NBA Youngboy is never shy about giving credit to his fellow rappers and those that came before him. The 23-year old rapper recently gave a shout out to some of his favorite artists in the game while revealing his top five list of rappers.
During last week’s episode of his Amazon program Never Broke Again Radio, Youngboy listed French Montana as one of his top five rappers in the game. “My top five rappers I’ll say,” he began. “Yeat, I’ll say [Young] Thug, I’ll say French Montana…Glizzy, I will say Shy Glizzy, yeah, the last one Soulja Slim.”

Youngboy and French joined forces back in 2020 for French’s track “So Real” from his CB5 mixtape. He worked with Shy Glizzy on “Hard” from his 3800 Degreez mixtape. As for Yeat, the duo recently teamed up on the track “I Don’t Text Back” off Youngboy’s Hey Ma’ I Got A Family album.
This isn’t the first time the Baton Rouge rapper publicly gave credit to his peers. On another episode of Never Broke Again Radio, Youngboy credited his artist Quando Rondo for being a much “better rapper” than he is. “The world be hating so bad, and I be keeping it so gangsta. Man, Quando rap way better than me, and them bitches be hating on my five. I don’t like that twisted ass sh**.”
NBA Youngboy may be young in age, but his accolades of that of a seasoned vet. Last month, he surpassed Jay-Z by having the most Billboard 200 entries. The success of his latest album MIGAF took Youngboy’s grand total of entries on the chart up to 25, surpassing Jay-Z, who has 24. The Top also gets his fair share of love from rappers.

Even when industry business gets in the way, it’s always great to see an artist deliver to fans despite the hiccups. NoCap did just that and released The Main Bird, a seven-track mixtape. Moreover, it was originally going to contain 16 songs, but ran into sample clearance issues. While those get sorted out, the Alabama rapper’s dropped more introspective melodic cuts and a few bangers to even his style out. Also, the track comes just days after his melodic feature on Monaleo’s “Miss U Already.”

While the 24-year-old is known to often get into those tuneful styles, he balances it out with some heat. Moreover, he recruited Rob49 and Rylo Rodriguez for some guest verses on the album. Rob delivers some aggressive energy over the Wheezy-produced “How It’s Going.” Meanwhile, Rylo dials things back on “Tight End” with some auto-tuned croons. However, NoCap remains the star of the show, and he kept up fast momentum after this year’s Mr. Crawfordwith the single “DNA.”
Although NoCap’s continued to build that success, it’s also resulted in some cut ties. He beefed with NBA YoungBoy recently via Instagram shots after YoungBoy wrote he doesn’t mess with him anymore. Later, NoCap called YB a “hater.”
“Let me know what I owe you,” he wrote in a message to the Louisiana rapper. “I don’t recall you giving s**t. I took the blame for why we don’t do music because I was trying to keep your hater card clean. But nah we really don’t do music because he probably scared I’ll be bigger on some baby s**t.” If The Main Bird and KnowCap are any indication, it looks like he’ll continue to make his own mark.
