Long Live Rico Wade: Organized Noize’s Most Iconic Beats Of All Time

Earlier this month, Atlanta producer and hip-hop legend Rico Wade passed away at the age of 52. A spokesperson for Wade’s family revealed heart failure as the cause of death. As a member of the production group Organized Noize, Rico Wade helped shape the sound of Atlanta hip-hop during the 1990s, transforming the genre into what it is today, specifically in the South. Their impact is well-documented, especially in their 2016 documentary, The Art Of Organized Noize. Wade and his group members, Ray Murray and Sleepy Brown, led the Dungeon Family collective, which included the likes of Outkast and Goodie Mob.

The trio produced the majority of both groups’ first few albums and biggest hit singles. The Dungeon Family also helped foster the careers of Killer Mike, Janelle Monáe, and Future, who is Rico Wade’s first cousin. Its “Dungeon” name originates from the name of the studio at which they used to record, located in the basement of Rico Wade’s childhood home.

As a pivotal member of Organized Noize and The Dungeon Family, Wade’s contributions to southern hip hop and the genre at large remain outstanding. Many of his closest collaborators have taken to social media to mourn his loss, including Killer Mike, Big Boi, and CeeLo Green. In light of his passing, we are celebrating his most iconic beats of all time, which primarily consist of Dungeon Family productions. Take a look at the list below.

5. Outkast – “Player’s Ball”

Outkast’s 1993 debut single is where it all began for The Dungeon Family. Rico Wade and his Organized Noize counterparts not only produced “Player’s Ball,” but handled the entirety of Big Boi and André 3000’s Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik. The song’s funky groove put a southern spin on West Coast G-Funk. This blend of regional styles acted as a catalyst for Outkast and Organized Noize’s later works. “Player’s Ball” marked the beginning of the South’s hip-hop takeover and remains one of Rico Wade’s most iconic works.

4. Outkast – “Two Dope Boyz (In A Cadillac)”

“Two Dope Boyz (In a Cadillac)” is easily the most iconic beat from Rico Wade and Organized Noize on Outkast’s ATLiens. The instrumental revolves around a sample of Five Stairstep’s “Danger! She’s A Stranger.” The hypnotic loop is flipped into a hip-hop track with its simple drum break. The beat leaves plenty of room for Big Boi and André 3000 to trade slick rhymes with one another. One of Outkast’s earlier iconic tracks, the beat prompted many artists to also sample “Danger! She’s A Stranger,” including Meyhem Lauren and Roc Marciano’s “Street Religion.”

3. Goodie Mob – “Cell Therapy”

Rico Wade and Organized Noize handled the production of Goodie Mob’s classic debut single, 1995’s “Cell Therapy.” Its main melody consists of just a few simple piano notes, which creates a haunting atmosphere. Goodie Mob contributes to this unsettling feeling of the chorus. They sing, “Who’s that peeking in my window? POW nobody now.” As Goodie Mob’s most iconic song, its beat is instantly recognizable and has been sampled on numerous occasions. Travis Scott, Rapsody, Lil Keke, and others have notably incorporated the legendary melody into their works. It is one of Organized Noize’s signature productions.

2. Outkast – “So Fresh, So Clean”

Outkast’s 2000 album, Stankonia featured less Organized Noize production compared to their previous albums. However, Rico Wade, Ray Murray, and Sleepy Brown produced one of the album’s biggest and most iconic hit singles. The samples of Joe Simon’s “Before the Night Is Over” and Funkadelic’s “I’ll Stay” provide a shimmering quality to the song’s feel-good instrumental. In addition to its samples, the track’s stuttering drum pattern is the production’s most outstanding quality. It provides a laid-back yet danceable rhythm, making “So Fresh, So Clean” a joyous occasion of its own. It is easily Outkast and Organized Noize’s biggest hit and arguably their most iconic collaboration.

1. TLC – “Waterfalls”

Rico Wade and Organized Noize may be known for their contributions to hip hop, but one of their most undeniable productions is an R&B classic. The group produced TLC’s signature hit, “Waterfalls” in 1995. The song’s groove is reminiscent of “Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik,” but TLC made the track their own with an infectious performance. The brass, organ, and drums work with one another in the beat, creating a soulful backing for the singers. “Waterfalls” is a timeless record assisted by classic production from Organized Noize. The song’s longevity is a testament to Rico Wade and Organized Noize’s everlasting musical legacy.

MC Lan Announces Release Date For New Playboi Carti Collab

Playboi Carti is one of the most enigmatic artists in hip-hop. It’s impossible to tell what he’s going to do next, and even tougher to gauge when he plans to drop new music. Most of the insight fans get is from Carti’s collaborators. This scarcity of information is what makes MC Lan’s recent interview so interesting. The Brazilian artist revealed that he’s been working closely with Playboi Carti over the last few months, and the two of them plan on releasing a joint single to coincide with the release of both of their albums.

MC Lan went on the FLOW Podcast on April 23, and covered a wide away of topics over four hours. The name drop that nobody mentioned, though, was Carti. MC Lan claimed that he’s been working with lots of U.S. talent, and the “Magnolia” rapper was at the top of his list. He went as far as to say that he’s done production work on Carti’s upcoming album. “There are many American artists out there,” he said. “Like the upcoming album from Playboi Carti. I can’t spill much but most of the albums, the ones I’m in touch with… I have a hand in it, I have a finger in it.”

Playboi Carti’s Collab Is Rumored For A May Release

MC Lan then stated that Carti will be appearing on his upcoming album in return. There was no word about a title or release date for the album, but he announced that their joint single will be dropping on May 23. Carti hasn’t commented on Lan’s claims, but then again, he usually has very little to say about release dates and concrete rollouts. He has, however, been teasing his upcoming album, titled MUSIC, since 2022.

The premise behind the title, according to Carti’s interview with XXL Magazine, is to push beyond genre conventions and mix in different styles. He doesn’t want to make hip-hop or rage music, he just wants to make music. “[I’ll] name my album MUSIC because that’s where I’m at,” he reasoned. “Because that’s all it is at this point.” Carti’s willingness to work with MC Lan, a pioneer in Brazilian funk music, displays this desire to experiment. Fans will find out soon enough whether Lan’s claims are legit.

Common Hypes Up New Album With Pete Rock: “It’s In My Top”

Common has classics. The Chicago emcee has managed the rare feat of staying relevant across multiple decades, and part of why he’s been able to do so is his ear. Common picks great producers to work with, and the results usually speak for themselves (with the occasional Universal Mind Control hiccup). This is why his comments regarding his upcoming album are so exciting. Com Sense revealed that he’s been in the studio with none other than Pete Rock, and the stuff they’re cooking up is evidently up there with the best music of their respective careers.

Common divulged this exciting development during a MusiCares panel in Santa Monica on April 22. He appeared alongside fellow Chicago luminary Lupe Fiasco, and was asked to rank his three best albums. Common’s answers were dead on as far as general consensus goes. He chose Be (2005) and Like Water for Chocolate (2000) as the top two, but he paused before picking the last one.

Common Is “Excited” For Fans To Hear It

His rationale was that his upcoming album contains some of his favorite music ever. “Y’all gon’ think I’m just talking,” he prefaced. “But [I want to pick] this new Pete Rock joint. I’ma see y’all when I come back, whenever I’m back, and y’all can tell me if I’m bullsh*ttin’ or not.” Com went on to say that the untitled album has received stellar feedback from the few who have heard it. “It’s in my top,” he asserted. “I’ve had a couple people coming in saying, ‘Yo, this is one of your best albums.’ So I’m excited about it.” Since the new one isn’t out yet, Common relented and picked Resurrection (1994) as his third best album.

Common and Pete Rock haven’t crossed paths as often as one would assume. They collaborated on “Tha Bizness” off De La Soul’s 1996 album, and “Verbal Murder 2” off of Rock’s 1998 release. Their most famous song together, however, is 1994’s “The B*tch In Yoo.” It was a diss record aimed at Ice Cube, and remains one of Com’s most lyrically aggressive showcases. Common and Rock are both at different points in their career, but their track record proves they have great chemistry.

Lil Nas X’s SoundCloud Renaissance Continued With ‘Trust Me,’ A Song About Discovering His Sexuality

Lil Nas X seems to be inching closer to the release of Nasarati 2, his follow-up to 2018’s Nasarati.

Lil Nas X takes pride in unconventionality, and so it is unsurprising that he has been releasing songs on SoundCloud as opposed to releasing singles in a traditional manner. On Wednesday night, April 24, he continued the trend by dropping “Trust Me” on SoundCloud. “This song means a lot to me,” Lil Nas X posted on X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram.

The first verse finds Lil Nas X transparently recounting the adolescent exploration of his sexuality, including “Grindr sessions.” He raps, “Back in middle school, I was fiending for dick / Seventh grade, sending my homies some pics / Daddy never knew what I did as a kid / He would’ve crucified me but / Trust me, I get it.”

The Grammy-winning provocateur teased a snippet of “Trust Me” within a March 9 Instagram carousel captioned, “been hoarding music for years smh I hate my relationship with fear of my songs not doing well and perception. I wish I could just release music and not give af! Anyways enough venting…what’s you guys top 2 of these snippets??”

“Trust Me” was produced by Ojivolta and Omer Fedi, both of whom produced on Lil Nas X’s 2021 debut studio album Montero.

Previously, Lil Nas X released “Light Again,” “Right There,” and “Lean On My Body” on SoundCloud. Those three are also on Lil Nas X’s YouTube page, but as of this writing, “Trust Me” remains exclusively on SoundCloud. Lil Nas X’s Billboard Hot 100 charter “J Christ” remains his only traditionally released single of 2024.

50 Cent Endorses Gucci Mane’s Diddy Diss: “That’s What You Get!”

50 Cent is not letting up. The rapper has been the propagator of the phrase “No Diddy” on social media, as a means of clowning disgraced mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs. He’s used it on during interviews and IG captions, but the phrase reached new levels of attention on April 24 when Gucci Mane dropped the song “TakeDat.” Gucci goes at the Bad Boy founder for four minutes straight by saying “No Diddy” after every line, and 50 absolutely loved it. He was such a fan of Gucci’s diss, in fact, that he reposted it on his own Instagram profile with an endorsement.

“Oh sh*t,” 50 wrote in the caption. “Wop took dat hit. This 🥷🏾Diddy POPPED.” Nobody has been more openly critical of Diddy than 50, especially once the criminal allegations started to roll in. He posted pics from the raid on Diddy’s house in March, and even found time to praise a woman holding a “No Diddy” sign during a ceremony in Shreveport. The “21 Questions” rapper added insult to injury by talking to Diddy directly in the caption. “That’s what you get f*cking wit me,” he added. Fans flocked to the comment section, suggesting that 50 hop on the “TakeDat” remix.

50 Cent and Gucci Mane have historically been on the same. 50 supported the Atlanta legend when he dropped a diss track against Jeezy titled “Rumors” in 2022. The track had a bar referencing the “ghost of Pookie,” and 50 hopped on Instagram Live to rap along while doing his best Gucci Mane impression. 50 had previously had beef with Young Jeezy himself, so there was no love lost between rivals. 50 and Gucci, who have often been compared to one another, also collaborated on the 2013 song “Recently.”

The G-Unit mogul is continuing his anti-Diddy campaign behind the scenes. In December, he announced plans to release a documentary focusing on Diddy’s various sexual crimes. “The Diddy documentary is in development through G-Unit Film and Television with 50 serving as executive producer,” a rep said. The proceeds from the documentary will be donated to victims of sexual assault and rape. A release date has not yet been announced.

Usher’s Teenage Son Stole Usher’s Phone To Finesse Meeting PinkPantheress, And Usher’s Retelling Of The Saga Is Hilarious

Usher has access to anyone at any time, and his son knows it. Naviyd, 15, did what any teenager would do in his position: Steal your world-famous father’s phone and hit up PinkPantheress.

“So…a week or so ago my son, Naviyd, stole my phone so he could dm his favorite artist @pinkpantheress,” Usher shared on his Instagram Story on Wednesday night, April 24.

The next post is a screenshot of Naviyd’s DM from April 9, reading, “Hello this is Usher’s son Naviyd I’m you true biggest fan please follow me back @_naviyd_ I put him on to masterpieces.” PinkPantheress graciously replied, “hahahahahaa this is wild!”

Next, Usher recounted what happened from his perspective, writing, “Now I just so happened to check my DMs earlier this past week and saw a message exchange from someone with a Powerpuff girl as their profile pic…so I’m like the hell is this.” (PinkPantheress’ Instagram icon is the Powerpuff girl Buttercup.)

Usher continued, “I open it and I’m like oh this boy done DMd this girl from my damn phone..” The following post is another screenshot — this time, showing Usher messaging an apology to PinkPantheress: “I’m so sorry … my son is a super fan.” Again, PinkPantheress was extremely gracious and replied, “don’t apologise! happy to have this interaction. I’d love to host y’all at the next show.”

Usher explained on his subsequent Instagram Story posts that he initially pretended that Naviyd “wasn’t allowed to go” to PinkPantheress’ Capable Of Love Tour “because he did the MOST just to connect with her on my account,” but he let him go to reward Naviyd’s super-fandom, which led to PinkPantheress taking a photo with Naviyd backstage and FaceTiming with Usher.

“PARENTAL TAKEAWAY,” Usher wrote, in conclusion. “This was a great moment for Naviyd … this was him movin on something he was passionate about. Yes… he violated my trust in the process and for that I will never trust him around my phone, but I should have known better. Nonetheless, I appreciate the hustle and him makin’ it happen. From a text, to a concert, to the artist. He masterminded this whole thing and made it happen.”

Usher Claims His Son Stole His Phone To DM PinkPantheress

Usher has a reputation for being a smooth talker. He’s built an entire career on it, from his music to his effortless dance moves onstage. The R&B icon learned that he isn’t the only one in the family who has game, however. He took to Instagram on April 24 to reveal that his son, Naviyd, snatched his phone so that he could slide in the DMs of his current favorite artist: PinkPantheress. The revelation would have been funny on its own, but Usher decided to document the entire incident with screenshots and quotes.

Usher recounted his confusion upon realizing he had a DM interaction with someone he didn’t know. “So, a week or so ago my son, Naviyd, stole my phone so he could dm his favorite artist @pinkpantheress,” he wrote. “Now I just so happened to check my DMs earlier this past week and saw a message exchange from someone with a Powerpuff girl as their profile pic. So I’m like the hell is this.” The R&B singer then realized what had happened when he clicked on the pic. “I open it and I’m like oh this boy done DMd this girl from my damn phone,” he added.

You can scroll through Naviyd’s entire DM conversation below. The highlight is undoubtedly the message where Naviyd, 15, claims to have exposed his dad to Pantheress’ music. “I put him onto masterpieces,” he wrote with a salute emoji.

Usher’s Son Eventually Met PinkPantheress

Usher reached out to PinkPantheress to apologize, but the pop star took it in stride. “Don’t apologize,” she responded. “Happy to have this interaction. I’d love to host y’all at the next show.” Usher pretended that he was going to prevent his son from going to the show “because he did the MOST just to connect with her on my account,” but he relented. Naviyd even got a chance to meet PinkPantheress and take photos with her backstage. The DM long shot worked out!

Usher and PinkPantheress have not officially collaborated on a song, but they’ve been the recipient of several viral mashups on TikTok. The most popular mashup combines Usher’s “Burn” with Pantheress’ single “Just for Me.” Usher has also praised the current generation of R&B stars. “I’m very happy that there’s a new installation of R&B artists who care to be authentic to what they are creating, inspired by artists of the past,” he told Billboard. “Everybody who has ever said to me that R&B is dead sounds crazy.”

Gucci Mane Ruthlessly Disses Diddy On ‘TakeDat,’ Which He Deemed The ‘Hardest Song Of The Summer’

Since last November, Diddy has been at the center of several very troubling allegations and lawsuits. Most recently, Homeland Security raided his Los Angeles and Miami residences. Thus, countless people are taking the opportunity to air their unfiltered opinions on Diddy, including 50 Cent, Kesha, Katt Williams, and Mase.

Add Gucci Mane to the list. On Wednesday, April 24, the Atlanta-bred rapper dropped “TakeDat,” a four-minute song that ruthlessly mocks Diddy. The first line uttered is, “I’m just f*cking around, but no Diddy.” Throughout the song, more or less every bar is punctuated with “No Diddy,” such as, “I got a Yung Miami b*tch from the city / I’m spendin’ money like a trick (No Diddy),” and “But she can’t be underage (No Diddy).”

The accompanying video finds Gucci Mane in a jacuzzi, surrounded by women. If the scene looks familiar, that’s because Gucci Mane not-so-subtly recreated Diddy’s scene from The Notorious B.I.G.’s 1994 “Big Poppa” video. And just in case there’s any confusion as to whether this was absolutely, one-hundred percent intentional, Gucci Mane posted a side-by-side image on Instagram alongside the caption, “Hardest song of the summer #TAKEDAT.”

Elsewhere in the video, Gucci Mane rides a motorcycle while delivering perhaps the song’s biggest blow to Diddy (and, unfortunately, the Detroit Pistons caught a stray): “Why you ain’t ever seen Wop at the brunch? / ‘Cause they might spike the punch, man, that sh*t too risky / Rule No. 1, never be too friendly / These industry n***** have bad intentions / I don’t trust nobody, and I stay my distance / Plus, your whole team suck, like the Detroit Pistons.”

Logic Announces “Ultra 85” Novel To Coincide With His New Album

Logic is a conceptual dude. His second album, The Incredible True Story, was about a group of friends flying around the universe in spaceship. His third album, Everybody, was about a man who died and was subsequently reincarnated in different bodies. The Maryland rapper has kept it simple since he came out of retirement. His latest project, however, has restored some of his ambition. Ultra 85, the upcoming Logic album, will coincide with the release of a novel of the same name.

Logic confirmed the existence of the novel via Instagram on April 24. He not treated fans to what the cover art looked like, but provided some context for the novel (and presumably, the album). “In the year 2115, when the Earth is no longer inhabitable, the remainder of humanity lives in Babel, a giant space station,” he wrote in the caption. “Two pilots, Quentin and Kai, must find the planet Paradise, where only the most promising citizens are allowed to live.” The rapper explained that his main characters will be forced to confront the fact that “Paradise” is not all it’s cracked up to be.

The plot details for Ultra 85 confirms that it will be a sequel to The Incredible True Story and Everybody. It will mark the completion of the titular story, nearly a decade later. Ultra 85 will also be the second time Logic pairs an album up with a companion novel. He released the novel Supermarket in 2017, which came with a titular album in which Logic explored the rock and punk genres. The latter was panned by most critics, but the novel was actually given positive notices.

Ultra 85 is currently available for pre-order on Simon & Schuster. It will be released on September 17. Fans have flocked to the comment section to speculate whether the accompanying album will drop on the same day. Both the Supermarket album and novel dropped on March 26, 2019, so it stands to reason the rapper would trot out a similar rollout for Ultra 85. Logic previously claimed that Ultra 85 would be his last album, but he’s since clarified his statement. He told a Reddit user during a Q&A that he will always make music, but that Ultra 85 will be his last album under the “Logic” moniker. The rapper first teased Ultra 85 back in 2018, though it has gone through several iterations since.

The second single from the album, “44ever,” was released April 19.

Big Sean Is Annoyed That X (Twitter) Is ‘Hornier Than Pornhub,’ And Who Can Disagree?

Once upon a time, in 2014, Big Sean dropped his multi-platinum-certified single “I Don’t F*ck With You” featuring E-40. In 2024, Big Sean does not f*ck with X (formerly Twitter). More specifically, the bots infiltrating the platform post-Elon Musk.

“It’s hornier than Pornhub on here, sheesh,” the Detroit rapper posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday night, April 23. “Damn near gotta be dolo just to open dis b*tch up… this is NOT one them tweets to drop no freaky sh*t under either.”

Earlier Tuesday, Big Sean was revealed as the latest Essence cover star. The accompanying cover story written by Elijah Watson explored Big Sean’s experience as a relatively new father, including Sean’s admission that he has enjoyed “slowing down and focusing solely on Noah.” (He and Jhené Aiko welcomed Noah in November 2022.)

In late March, Big Sean released “Precision,” which preceded his announcement of a forthcoming self-help book, Go Higher: Five Practices For Purpose, Success, And Inner Peace.

“I’m excited about a lot of things we’ve got dropping this year,” Big Sean said, in part, in a video posted on Instagram on April 3. “A lot of new music, new projects, but aside from the music, it’s another project that’s been years in the making that’s finally time — I can’t even believe it, for real.”

He continued, “I’ve always been about speaking from the heart, following your intuition, checking in with yourself mentally, because that’s how I was raised.”

And so, it goes without saying that Big Sean was raised better than those acting up on X.

Go Higher is out 10/8 via Simon & Schuster. Find more information here.
