Larry June Provides Immaculate Vibes On New Album “Doing It For Me”

Larry June is the most relaxed man in hip-hop. He’s inherited the crown from Curren$y, who shares June’s affinity for smoked-out Alchemist production. The thing that distinguishes June, though, is his specificity. The rapper’s verses are packed with references to the Bay Area, designer brands, and the experiences that made him who he is today. Boring topics in the wrong hands, but Larry June has an innate feel for what sounds good. Doing It for Me is a showcase for the rapper to show what he can do without having to rely on others. Like the titular “me” suggests, the album is a solo venture, with zero guest features.

“Magnum P.I.” is the perfect thesis for the album. The production is hazy and nostalgic, while Larry June waxes poetic over his teenage escapades. “Morning Calculations” is even better. Built around a hypnotic vocal sample, the song gives the rapper a chance to reflect on his rise to stardom. The unison of topics and song titles cannot be overstated here. Every track on Doing It for Me sounds like a manifestation of its title. “Stinson Beach” pushes things in a jazzy direction courtesy of flute samples and a chorus that showcases Larry June’s surprisingly decent singing voice. “Breakfast In Gold Coast” is one of the best songs the rapper has ever released. The beat, the bars, and the aesthetic details (the sounds of rain at the very end) compress the June experience into a two and a half minute masterclass. Doing It for Me is really for all of us.

Chloe Enlists Ty Dolla $ign, Anderson .Paak, Sister Halle & More For Sophomore Effort “Trouble In Paradise”

The lead up to Chloe Bailey’s new album Trouble In Paradise has been one of pessimism on the listeners’ side. One of half of the Atlanta R&B duo Chloe x Halle was being bombarded with flop predictions due to what critics feel was not enough promotion. However, the 26-year-old songstress has been taking the doubts in stride and with confidence, something that this album has plenty of. This follows up her debut from just over a year ago, In Pieces. Just looking at each of the projects on tracklists alone, you can see that Chloe feels she can work alongside some more established names in her field. Those include Ty Dolla $ign, Jeremih, and Anderson .Paak.

We’d say that Chloe does more than enough to hold her own on these collaborations from Trouble In Paradise. What also is showing confidence in her skills are the production choices. This 16-song set features many subsets of R&B such as contemporary, Afrobeats, and pop. What also sets this LP apart from its predecessor are Chloe’s dynamic and showstopping vocal performances. The range she puts on display is quite amazing and great examples of this include “Same Lingerie”, “Rose”, “Might As Well”, and the intro, “All I Got (Free Falling)”. Chloe told the haters she feels she can never flop because she’s making music she loves. That is apparent here and we would say it’s more so than ever before.

Logic Delivers Some Thrilling Rapping Performances Across “Ultra 85”

There really isn’t much more that needs to be said about Maryland rapper, singer, and producer, Logic. Sure, he can be a bit divisive at times. Some of his more recent releases and their topical focus are not the most glowing representations of him. However, overall, Logic has put together quite the discography over the last decade plus and Ultra 85 will go down as one of those high-quality releases. As his fanbase is well aware of already, this project has been eagerly awaited. After all, he’s been working on this effort for roughly seven years.

So, when he finally released massive updates at the start of 2024, fans took quite the sigh of relief. Some were skeptical due to this long wait, but that pessimistic outlook flew out the window. You can thank singles such as “Mission Control”, “Teleport”, “44ever”, among others for that. Expectations were certainly back up and we can pretty safely say that Logic’s supporters will be happy with the final results. Across 20 tracks equating to over an hour of material, he’s giving you some of his best rapping performances from a technical and topical standpoint. Additionally, the jazzy, soulful, and head-nodding beats courtesy of longtime collaborator 6ix, Logic, Beat Butcha, and more, are meticulously crafted and mixed to perfection.

Additionally, fans will enjoy the continuation of The Incredible True Story space odyssey of Kai and Thomas. Overall, they are equally well performed and funny. Once this accompanying novel drops, it will be interesting to see where Logic goes from here. He’s claimed to have been done with music in the past, but Ultra 85 does feel and sound like a great send-off for the prolific MC.

Benny The Butcher Gives Fans A Gritty Summer With “Summertime Butch”

Benny the Butcher turned heads when he announced title of his new album. Summertime Butch seemed tailor made for mockery. The rapper was either going to put a unique spin on his tried and true sound, or flop attempting a glossy, shiny suit detour. Thankfully, Benny went with the former. The album has more of a summer vibe than, say, the Tana Talk series, but the whole point of those is to make the listener feel like they’re experiencing a chilly NYC winter. Summertime Butch is a cool change of pace in this regard. It’s the sound Benny the Butcher waxing poetic in a white linen shirt.

“One Verse Butch” is vintage Mafioso rap. Benny the Butcher drops Pacino references over a wicked piano loop, and true to form, he knocks out his stellar verse in one extended run. The production is the biggest change on Summertime Butch, and the best songs on the album know to keep it simple. Benny the Butcher’s flow is so captivating that he doesn’t need a lot of musical flourishes to make a compelling track. “Knightfall” and “Summer ’24” are perfect examples of this formula. The latter is a candidate for best on the album thanks to the pocket Benny finds on the second verse. “The Blue Building” is a close second, thanks to Amber Simone’s soaring chorus. Bottom line: Benny the Butcher did it again.

Polo G Drops Heartfelt “Hood Poet” Album After A Three Year Absence

Polo G has been through it. The rapper’s music has always had a contemplative feel to it, but the events of the last few years had doubled it. Polo G has opened up about his decision to step out of the spotlight and get sober, which has resulted in Hood Poet being delayed multiple times. Well, we finally have it. The anticipated fourth album by Polo G is here, and we’re happy to say it was worth the wait. It not only lays any claims to rest that the rapper has lost it, it might just be his most focused release yet. Hood Poet evokes previously untapped depth, and the album lives up to its weighty title.

There’s not a lot of joy on here, but Polo G does an exemplary job of exploring darker spaces. “Detox” breaks down his dire struggle to get sober, while “Darkside” gives the rapper ample room to wax poetic about his past. Thankfully, the guest features buy into the album’s themes. Lil Durk sounds impassioned as ever on the standout single “We Uh Shoot.” 42 Dugg, meanwhile, delivers a particularly gritty verse on “Only Gang.” Polo G really gets in his bag on the album’s solo songs, though. “Thorns” and “Distraction” are driven by the tension between slow tempos and Polo G’s propulsive flow. The best example of this is the single “Angels In the Sky.” It not only boasts one of the best beats, but one of the rapper’s catchiest hooks to date. We’re glad Polo G took his time with this one.

Latto Gives Fans What They Want On “Sugar Honey Iced Tea” Album

Latto knows what works. She’s at her best when making brash pop-rap. It’s what led to her break out with “Big Energy” in 2021, and shot her back up the charts in 2023 with “Put It on da Floor Again.” it’s a formula that works, and the rapper wisely decided not to tinker when it came to her brand new album. Sugar Honey Ice Tea is every bit the smooth musical ride fans want. Latto is talking trash to her haters, and flexing her skills over sugary instrumentals. It’s a little long in terms of runtime, but taken as songs, there’s a lot of good material on here. The singles sound especially good in the context of the album.

The aforementioned “Put It on da Floor Again” and “Sunday Service (Remix)” still ring off thanks to standout guest features. It’s the other collabs, though, that make the album such a pleasant surprise. Latto and Megan Thee Stallion flash killer chemistry on the song “Squeeze,” which is about exactly what you think it is. Mariah the Scientist and Ciara allow the rapper to showcase different sides and sounds, and they mostly go over well. The Ciara track, “Good 2 You,” feels like a conscious throwback to Ciara’s debut album, which Latto has cited as a musical influence. Young Nudy is a bit out of place on the song “Shrimps & Grits,” but Latto’s performance and the wavy beat help to keep it together. To Latto’s credit, she also does a solid job of holding down solo songs like “Brokey.” A successful project in our book.

Southside Decides To “Break The Silence” On Debut Solo Album

Legendary Atlanta producer Southside is back with BREAK THE SILENCE, his debut solo album and first solo project since 2018’s Trap Ye. The 808 Mafia member used to go by Young Sizzle when he rapped more, and he’s tapping back into that side of him on this latest release. Southside is among the most influential forces to come from Atlanta’s hip-hop scene in the 2010s. The tape sounds a lot like the artists he helped influence, such as Lil Baby, Migos, and, before either of them, Future. As a result, BREAK THE SILENCE fits in perfectly to the modern Atlanta hip-hop scene. The city continues to dominate thanks in part to the foundation 808 Mafia (and Southside in particular) laid for artists at the beginning of the 2010s.

The album features additional production from Akachi, TM88, and others, though many of the beats are handled primarily by Southside himself. At times, it takes inspiration from other notable Atlanta producers. Perhaps most prominently Pi’erre Bourne, whose style helped bring Playboi Carti into mainstream prominence. Southside sounds confident on the mic as well, taking clear inspiration from Future. BREAK THE SILENCE is also being distributed by legendary music label Epic Records, a significant co-sign for the 35-year-old. Earlier this year, Southside made headlines for a fight at the Cannes Film Festival that also included Travis Scott. All parties involved resolved the conflict quickly. Now, Southside gets to make headlines for reasons pertaining to what he does best: making music. You can stream the producer’s album below.

Q Da Fool Returns With New Album “King George”

Maryland-based rapper Q Da Fool dropped a new album, called King George. The title references his real name, George J. Hundall III, but also represents how he feels about his abilities. The former Roc Nation signee left the label in 2021 after signing in 2018 and only releasing one album with them. Since leaving, Q Da Fool has released 2-3 albums per year, so the fact that King George is his first new release of 2024 at this point in the year is surprising. King George is 25 songs long and slightly over an hour in runtime. Additionally, the album features appearances from up-and-coming Michigan rapper Veeze, Bobson and Lil Mar.

Q Da Fool has had some legal issues in recent years. He served two years in prison, and after being released in early 2023, got arrested again for “inciting violence.” The charge stemmed from the release of a song that some interpreted as a diss track towards DC rapper Ant Glizzy. Since then, he’s been on probation, which he will be on for five years, as well as a seven-year suspended sentence. In a Rolling Stone profile ahead of the release of Art of Ambition, Q Da Fool was clear in his excitement about getting home and getting back to work. Since starting his career, Q Da Fool has built a strong fanbase early. Though he’s been releasing music since 2015, he is only 27 years old. He still has the chance to be a star one day, but only time will tell. Until then, stream King George below.

RXKNephew Drops “Always Remember Me,” His Ninth Album Of 2024

RXKNephew, a rapper from Rochester, New York, has been continuing to gain popularity. In addition to this work with fellow Rochester rapper Rx Papi, RXKNephew is known for his diverse sound and sense of humor. Fans also know him for his prolific output. Always Remember Me is RXKNephew’s ninth album of 2024, following a 2023 that saw him release 10. Since debuting in 2019, he’s released nearly 100 projects in total. RateYourMusic says this is his 49th LP, while AlbumOfTheYear says this is his 53rd. Regardless of which number is the accurate one, the rapper has dozens of releases to his name in just five years. In addition to the album being his ninth of 2024, Always Remember Me, his second in two weeks. Slitherman For President released on July 24. If nothing else, RXKNephew’s work ethic is undeniable.

Always Remember Me is in line with RXKNephew’s other releases as far as what fans should expect. He raps about money, street life, women, and his growing fame. The soundscape is as diverse as ever, featuring heavy sample usage. The beats go from being trap-oriented bangers to West Coast-like summertime beats, to hip-house very quickly, the whiplash of which is a trademark of his releases. MESSIAH! Gets Contemplative On Latest Album “The Villain Wins”

MESSIAH!, an up-and-coming artist from Charlotte, North Carolina, dropped his third album, the villain wins, on August 2. MESSIAH! has enjoyed some success this year. Along with MAVI and ovrkast, he performed the track “Silent Heel” for On The Radar Radio. In July, he returned to the YouTube channel to freestyle. He proved himself as a lyricist, which he continues to do on his newest album. His words cut deep, and he provides listeners with the type of soul-baring introspection that his peers also specialize in. the villain wins features appearances from Niontay, Malaya, Vayda, and the aforementioned MAVI, a close collaborator. MAVI appeared on MESSIAH!’s previous albums as well, becoming a part of his story as a developing rapper.

The production is similar to what rappers like MAVI, Navy Blue, or Redveil are known for rapping over. Several people handled the beats, including Angelo LeRoi and ovrkast, the latter of whom has also worked with Earl Sweatshirt. Opener “my eyes!!” is a dark track that sounds like something that Earl himself would rap on, with MESSIAH! detailing how his struggles have forced him to grow up. The Malaya-featuring “burden of truth” feels a lot like something that would’ve been at home on an early Slum Village album. That contrast makes MESSIAH! unique, and his skill set will only continue to develop. At 25 minutes, the villain wins does not overstay its welcome, either. It’s personal, smooth, and engaging, making MESSIAH! an artist that hip-hop fans should keep an eye on. Especially if you’re a fan of any rappers previously mentioned. You can stream the villain wins below.
