Childish Gambino Finally Completes “Atavista,” A Journey 4 Years In The Making

Childish Gambino, one of the most creative and unpredictable artists we have in modern hip-hop, has made a long-awaited return. Even after dropping 3.15.20 back in March of 2020, the California multi-hyphenate showed that he was far from done with it. Over the last couple of months, Donald Glover had been dropping GILGA Radio episodes/livestreams that previewed new tracks, as well as some that hardcore fans were familiar with. Now, Childish Gambino is ready to show what he has been working on for these last four years with Atavista.

There was not really information as to when this more refined set of tracks would be available, at least up until late last night. But now that it is finally here, Gambino has been blowing up social media with updates about his worldwide tour, as well as future plans for Atavista and other projects. In a recent post on X, he revealed that a “special vinyl [is] coming soon w/ visuals for each song.” Additionally, he let the cat out of the bag that “the all new childish gambino album comes out in the summer.”

Speaking of guests, Atavista recruits Ariana Grande, 21 Savage, Ink, Kadhja Bonet, and Summer Walker. Be sure to check out the tape with the links above.

Kalan.FrFr Vows To “MAKE THE WEST GREAT AGAIN” On Latest EP

You could argue that the West Coast hip-hop scene has been run by Kendrick Lamar for the better part of a decade. If not, it is undeniable that he has been taking over for the last several weeks. His diss tracks and verses have been playing all throughout the streets of California in particular. “Not Like Us,” his most recent diss and perhaps the Drake kill shot, has sort of become the anthem out West. With that in mind, artists of lower stature, such as Kalan.FrFr, really have to come through with some major heat.

Kalan.FrFr is looking to put on for his hometown, and the state at large, with a new EP called MAKE THE WEST GREAT AGAIN. The 29-year-old multi-hyphenate might not have the fan base of a K-Dot, but he certainly has the backing of a major label (Roc Nation), and the co-signs from plenty of big fish. Giving this new tape that West Coast street cred are fellow veterans YG, Ty Dolla $ign, as well as G Herbo and Spooky Jay. Kalan.FrFr is following up on a December 2023 EP, NOT HARD 2 UNDERSTAND, as well a 2022 LP, 222. Furthermore, leading up to MTWGA, the “Right Wit It” MC dropped one promo track, “EVERYBODY,” which called out all the gangs.

Listen To MAKE THE WEST GREAT AGAIN By Kalan.FrFr

So, how does Kalan.FrFr perform on this new EP? To be quite frank, it comes across as run of the mill West Coast fare. The track that managed to stand out to us was “NO MUNYON NO FUNYON” with G Herbo. The Chicago native brings an animated performance to break up the flow that Kalan brings, which is his trademark smooth flow. Additionally, Spooky Jay, has probably the most unique outing that will definitely grab your attention. But back to Kalan, he sort of recycles that formula across the rest of the tape. On top of that talking about the same topics (flexing and being around women), it gets even more redundant. The beats are passable and non-offensive, which is fine, but it just does not move the needle. Still, give the tape a chance with the links above.

What are your thoughts on this brand-new EP MAKE THE WEST GREAT AGAIN by Kalan.FrFr? What tracks have you been gravitating toward? Who had the strongest guest performance? Where do you rank this project amongst the rest of his discography? We would like to hear what you have to say, so be sure to leave your takes in the comments section. Conway The Machine Confirms There Is Only One “SFK (Slant Face Killah)” On Latest Album

So many big-ticket artists have come through with some fire releases today. Chief Keef, Ghostface Killah, and Gunna are just a handful, but Conway the Machine deserves to be in that conversation. The prolific and gritty Buffalo, New Yorker has been on a torrent streak of releases over the last year and today he is back with a new studio album. In fact, SFK (Slant Face Killah), is the fourth one in the discography of Conway The Machine.

Right from the true opening cut “Mutty” with the ever-so-consistent Stove God Cooks, you know that Conway is not playing around on this project. However, that point was clear when the promotional singles were rolling out. Additionally, SFK was bound to be great based on the stacked set of guest performers. With names like Joey Bada$$, Method Man, Swizz Beatz, Key Glock, Tech N9ne, and Raekwon in the fold, fire collaborations are bountiful.

On this tape, Conway is delivering his usual dingy boom-bap formula on cuts like “Meth Back!” and “Mutty.” But he is also showing that he enjoys bodying trap beats on “Ten/Rya Interlude” and “Raw!” That is especially true on the latter, as Conway is like a hot knife through butter on the speedier drum pattern. Overall, Conway really brings it on the concise 14-song tracklist, and rarely feels like an afterthought at any point.

What are your thoughts on this brand-new album SFK (Slant Face Killah) by Conway The Machine? What tracks have you been gravitating toward? Who had the strongest guest performance? 1. Despertar
  2. Mutty (feat. Stove God Cooks)
  3. Give & Give with Cool & Dre

  5. Kin Xpress (feat. Larry June)
  6. Meth Back! (feat. Method Man, Sk Da King & Flee Lord)

Ghostface Killah Continues To “Set The Tone” For What It Means To Be A Legend On New LP

Ghostface Killah managed to stand out in a group full of legends when he was with the Wu-Tang Clan. Now, the Staten Island native is making his presence felt in a similar way, even in today’s landscape. After four years of not dropping a new album, Ghostface Killah has just ended the dry spell with Set The Tone (Guns & Roses). This marks his 12th solo effort and excitingly, this is the East Coast spitter’s first release underneath Nas’ label, Mass Appeal.

Leading up to this moment, Killah put out two singles; “YUPP!” with Remy Ma and “Scar Tissue” featuring Nas. Additionally, over the last week, he had been getting fans hyped for Set The Tone on his social media platforms. “HOLD TIGHT THIS ALBUM HAS 🔥 FIRE 🔥 SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE…. GUNS & ROSES, Ghostface said while promoting “Scar Tissue on IG.” Those words from the now 54-year-old (as of May 9), are quite true, as he brings different genres, like dancehall, to the table.

Chief Keef Reminds Us Of His Greatness On “Almighty So 2”

One of hip-hop’s most elusive figures has finally delivered on the promise he made to his fan base about five years ago. Yes, you heard that right, Chicago drill icon Chief Keef has come through with Almighty So 2. Some may still be holding a grudge, but we are just happy this sequel is here. This is now his second project of the year, following up his collaborative mixtape with producer Mike WiLL Made-It DIRTY NACHOS. There were some rumblings that Chief Keef was going to drop Almighty So 2 back at the end of March.

However, after the rapper/producer tandem dropped their effort instead, hope dwindled that we would get two tapes in one month. Luckily though, we did not have to wait another 10 years for it. We mentioned how we were just elated that Keef followed through, but that does not mean squat if the project is a dud. Thankfully, the now 28-year-old veteran is bringing some of his most consistent material.

Keef is rapping like he still has something to prove and the beats (which he had a hand in) just slap. The samples are incorporated to perfection and there is a bevy of them. Features are also a major factor to the tape’s success, too. Lil Gnar, Tierra Whack, Sexyy Red, Quavo, G Herbo, Ballout, all bring something to the table. You can check out Almighty So 2 with the links above.

What are your thoughts on this brand-new mixtape Almighty So 2 by Chief Keef? So far, has this project lived up to the hype for you, why or why not? What tracks have you been gravitating toward? Gunna Returns With Stylish But Overlong “One Of Wun” Album

Gunna has spent the last few years doing damage control. He was arrested in relation to the YSL Rico indictment, and his decision to cop a plea deal led to debate over whether he was “snitch.” It’s a tough label to tear off once it’s been applied, but the Georgia rapper has done a good job of redirecting fans back to his music. Gunna’s 2023 album, A Gift & a Curse, spawned his second top 10 hit, and his latest album, One of Wun, is an attempt to bolster his credibility as an artist.

One of Wun has some Gunna’s slickest album cuts to date. “whatsapp (wassam)” remains a standout, but it’s a credit to the uniformly excellent production that it sounds right at home. “collage” and “neck on a yacht” are braggadocios cuts that further the opulent, unhurried tone of the album as a whole. Gunna has more confidence than ever when it comes to finding catchy, unique rhyming pockets, and it shows. “On one tonight” and “still prevail” are low on substance but high on style. Frankly, that’s where Gunna excels.

Gunna Goes For a More Stylish, Relaxed Sound

One of Wun is surprisingly light on features, though it actually plays to the album’s benefit. It’s a breath of fresh air when Normami and Leon Bridges show up on “$$$” and “clear my rain,” respectively. Gunna does surprisingly well on these more soulful cuts. Offset and Roddy Ricch provide the only guest verses, and the former absolutely steals the show on “prada dem.” It’s probably still the best song on the album. The biggest knock against One of Wun is that it’s too long. It’s 20 songs, and even on first listen, you can pick out tracks that could’ve been cut. There’s a better album within the finished product we got.

What are your thoughts on this brand-new album One of Wun by Gunna? Is this the rapper’s best album yet? Which song is your favorite and why? Do you think the rapper is throwing subs at Future? We would like to hear what you have to say, so be sure to leave your takes in the comments section. Additionally, always keep it locked in with HNHH for all of the latest news surrounding Gunna. 21 Lil Harold Drops Off So-So Mini Tape “Sick Of Myself”

At times, hip-hop can grow stale and that is an argument that people online bring up. It can be a valid one at times, especially after the down year that was 2023. Some rappers, like Lil Yachty for example, have even publicly spoken up about the concern they have for its future. Thankfully, 2024 has been a return to form. However, there are going to be a couple of releases that come across as plain and forgettable. Unfortunately, those are the feelings we have about a fair share about Sick of Myself by 21 Lil Harold.

This is the Atlanta, Georgia native’s follow-up to his debut album After The Curse, which dropped back in January 2023. 21 Lil Harold, for those who do not know, is one of 21 Savage’s closest friends. Additionally, he had a huge hand in creating the Slaughter Gang Entertainment label. Because of his tight-knit ties to Savage, him, along with JID and Nardo Wick, will be going on tour together this summer for The American Dream Tour.

Listen To Sick Of Myself By 21 Lil Harold

In fact, the North American tour kicks off tomorrow in Concord, California at the Toyota Pavilion. So, Sick of Myself comes at a perfect time as now he will have some new material to play when opens. The promotional singles, “Sundown” and “Gin & Juice,” were pretty great. However, the same cannot really be said about the rest. The solo cuts all sound the same lyrically (sex and spending money on women). Like Savage’s recent work, Harold does little to switch up his flows or his approach to a track. The beats are solid, but they carry the project for the most part, sadly. However, we still recommend you at least give the tape a try, so click the links above to do so.

What are your thoughts on this brand-new album Sick of Myself by 21 Lil Harold? Where do you rank this project amongst the rest of his discography? Or did this offering disappoint you? Who had the best feature and why? What songs are you gravitating toward the most and why? We would like to hear what you have to say, so be sure to leave your takes in the comments section. Bear1Boss Brings A More Cohesive Take On His Avant-Garde Sound With “Bubbles”

When you think of Buffalo, New York, most would think of blue-collar people, and working for what you want. The city’s grit is evident in a lot of rappers’ music. Benny The Butcher, Conway the Machine, and Westside Gunn are just handful that embody that same energy. However, Bear1Boss is someone who totally goes against the grain. His colorful, zany, and niche sound is something that would originate somewhere out West or in some obscure city. He definitely does not color within the lines when it comes to putting together projects. That was apparent on his most recent effort SUPER BOSS!

It just sounded really rough around the edges, and it felt like something that could have dropped during the mixtape era. The random video game samples and wacky sound effects could come across as endearing to some. But for us, it was a tough listen from beginning to end. So, with Bear1Boss following up that February release with Bubbles our expectations for it being enjoyable were low.

Listen To Bubbles By Bear1Boss

Thankfully, we were pleasantly surprised by Bear1Boss on this effort. Bubbles comes across as more polished and cohesive. Hardcore fans who enjoy his intentional unfinished style may not like the cleaner approach. In our eyes though, Bear1Boss still put together some interesting hyperpop and pop rap beats without trying too hard to be goofy. His voice and flows suffice, and the listening experience was much improved this time around.

What are your thoughts on this brand-new album Bubbles by Bear1Boss? Is this one of his stronger efforts as of late, why or why not? Who had the better feature? What songs are you gravitating toward the most and why? We would like to hear what you have to say, so be sure to leave your takes in the comments section. Boosie Badazz Incorporates The Soul Of The South On “Boosie Blues”

Boosie Badazz is usually in the headlines these days for the honest comments about the genre, other artists, or beefs he is involved in. However, do not forget for one second how much the Louisiana native has poured into the genre musically speaking. Countless records and endless influence are have what made him a prominent figure regardless of your opinion about him. Recently, Boosie Badazz fed the streets again with a blues-inspired record, Boosie Blues.

This quickly follows up a collaboration album he did with Jit The Beast back in February. It was called In House 2: Boosie and the Beast, and it spanned 14 tracks. If you are thinking, “why is he doing a blues-esque album?” Well, this is not his first rodeo. If you go back to 2018, that year he put forth Boosie Blues Cafe.

It was a bit rough around the edges in terms of quality and some of the vocals. But on the quasi-sequel, Boosie has curated some more refined tracks. Some will still have to fight through the raspy, high-pitched cadence. However, there is some fun moments to be had.

What are your thoughts on this brand-new album Boosie Blues by Boosie Badazz? Out of his now two blues-inspired records which one do you prefer and why? Which track is the best out the bunch? “F.U.N.” Continues For Slum Village On Their New Album With A Host Of Features Joining The Party

It has been a minute since we have checked back in with one of the most underrated hip-hop collectives, Slum Village. The Detroit-based group is still together all these decades later, but it has been quite some time since their last record. In fact, four years have gone by since Dirty District, Vol. 1 (Instrumentals). However, it has been even longer since we had heard an album with vocals on it. You would have to go back to 2019’s Fantastic 2020, Vol. 2. But nonetheless, we have new Slum Village material to sink our teeth into with F.U.N.

The former trio of J Dilla, Baatin, and founder T3, now shrunken down to the latter and producer YOUNG RJ, are continuing to carry on the group’s legacy. It is safe to say that they have it all under control. F.U.N. is a groovy, jazzy, and funky listen from front to back. Also making this an enjoyable time are the wide variety of features.

According to HipHopDX, the mission for Slum Village was to be bold and just have fun (pun intended) with this record. “Slum is still here. We’re still relevant and we’re still trying to push the envelope. Sometimes people put too many rules on music, and without sounding cliche, we wanted to just have fun with [this album]. So, in three words: Fuck U N****s,” T3 said.
