Erykah Badu Encourages Lauryn Hill To Record New Music Following Apple Music Honor

All week music fans were waiting online with feverish anticipation for each new drop from Apple Music’s Top 100 Albums of all time list. Hip-hop was well-represented on the list, though it still didn’t always go over well with rap fans. Nas’ classic debut album Illmatic landed on the list though many fans felt it deserved to be much higher. Kendrick Lamar landed in the top 10 but with his 2012 album Good Kid m.A.A.d City. But many think that the record’s follow-up, 2015’s To Pimp A Butterfly was even more deserving of a spot.

At the same time as Kendrick’s placement at number 7 was revealed, they also revealed the very top spot on the list. Lauryn Hill’s classic 1998 debut album The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill landed at number one. The album’s appearance on the list is no surprise as it’s one of the most acclaimed records of all time. Still many were surprised to see it land higher than albums like Michael Jackson’s Thriller and The Beatles Abbey Road. The album is famously still her only studio album to date. It was followed up by her MTV Unplugged 2.0 live album a few years later but 26 years later she’s yet to release a new studio album. But Erykah Badu thinks now is the perfect time for Hill to get back in the studio following her Apple Music honor.

In a recent Instagram post, Badu called for Hill to return to the studio. “We celebrate you. You weathered the storm L boogie. @mslaurynhill . Your best work is still in u. I see u,” her caption read. The Apple Music albums list was voted on by various members of the music media. They weren’t just asked to pick their favorite albums though. Ebro shared the criteria voters were given in a tweet earlier this week. It focused more on things like influence and impact rather than just quality alone.

Lauryn Hill Claims The Top Spot On The Apple Music 100 Best Albums List

On May 13, Apple Music began their 10-day countdown to rattle off their 100 Best Albums list. With any sort of ranking, fans and artists are going to be divided. But, Ebro, famous radio host and hip-hop figure, made sure to explain to the masses that the requirements for each selection were robust. He, along with various other experts and artists were not allowed to choose their favorite records. Instead, they focused on things like cultural impact, fleshed out ideas over hits, storytelling, etc. With all of that in consideration the people over at Apple Music certainly had their work cut out for them.

But the dust has now settled and only one LP is reigning supreme. If you read the title, then you could guess that the album that earned the top spot was The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Lauryn’s one and only solo album claimed the throne over some pretty tough competition. Falling just short of number one was Beyonce’s Lemonade (#10), Kendrick Lamar’s good kid, m.A.A.d city (Deluxe) (#7), and Frank Ocean’s Blonde (#5). Other notable entries were Stevie Wonder’s Songs in the Key of Life (#6), Prince & The Revolution’s Purple Rain (#4), and Michael Jackson’s Thriller (#2).

Hip-hop and R&B were represented a lot on this Best 100 Albums list overall too. Nas, The Notorious B.I.G., De La Soul, Travis Scott, Tyler, The Creator, and Dr. Dre, are just a few to name. Even though it seems that a lot of thought went into these rankings, a lot of fans were in an uproar over Nas’ Illmatic only being at number 39. SZA was also quite puzzled over SOS LP placing in the 70 range. “Lmao. 72nd is so disrespectful,” she wrote on IG. While a lot of people will assuredly disagree with the Lauryn Hill pick, this album will never age. It still has a lasting impact on one of the largest genres in the world all these years later.

Lauryn Hill Postpones “Miseducation” Tour Amid “Serious Vocal Strain”

Lauryn Hill has postponed the rest of her tour celebrating the 25th anniversary of The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill while dealing with “serious vocal strain.” She explained the decision in a lengthy statement on Instagram, early Wednesday. After thanking fans for their continued support throughout the tour thus far, she explained why she can’t continue until 2024.

“As many of you may know, I’ve been battling serious vocal strain for the past month,” she wrote. “I made it through each show by taking prescribed prednisone, but this can be detrimental to the body when taken in large amounts over long periods of time. In order to prevent any long term negative affect on my voice and my body, I need to take time off to allow for real vocal recovery so that I can discontinue the medication completely.”

Hill continued: “For this reason we have to reschedule most of the remaining shows this year. The shows that were canceled this year will be rescheduled for early 2024 AND because of the overwhelming response, we’ll be adding new cities to the tour, including overseas. We’re working on the new calendar now, and announcing soon.” Despite the postponement, Hill says she and the Fugees will still go forward with their show in Philadelphia, this weekend. The Game Left With “Chills” After Lil Wayne Freestyles At Fugees Concert

The Game says that he “got chills” after seeing Lil Wayne perform a freestyle during a cameo appearance at the Fugees’ recent concert in Los Angeles. He remarked as such in a comment on Instagram when Rap Marathon shared a video of the performance. In the clip, Wayne raps over the Fugees‘ “Ready Or Not” beat, remixing it with his own lyrics.

The Game wasn’t the only one with a positive reaction to Wayne’s freestyle. Other fans shared plenty of excited responses in the comments section as well. One wrote: “Daaaaamn wtf we need that remix on streaming platforms … Weezy da [goat emoji] no [cap emoji].” Another added: “It’s amazing that we grew up listening to him and he never once fell off, he was confident in his ability so much so, that he ventured into rock. Had a hit, and just kept pushing. Absolute pioneer in the rap game.”

While fans were loving Wayne’s appearance, the overall response to Lauryn Hill’s tour hasn’t been universally positive. Other attendees have complained about the artists’ tardiness to shows. Hill responded to those complaints during the Los Angeles show. “They say, ‘Oh, she’s late’ and ‘She’s late tonight,’” Hill said. “Yo, y’all are lucky I make it to this bloodclot stage every night.”

Lauryn Hill Fires Back At Criticism For Being Late To Shows

Lauryn Hill has addressed critics who have complained about her being late to live performances on her tour celebrating the 25th anniversary of The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. On stage at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, Hill remarked that fans are “lucky” she makes it to the shows at all.

“They say, ‘Oh, she’s late’ and ‘She’s late tonight.’ Yo, y’all lucky I make it on this … stage every night,” she told the audience. “I leave my soul on this stage. And I don’t do it because they let me. I do it because I stand here in the name of God. And I know it. God is the one who allows me to do it, who surrounded me with family and community when there was no support when the album sold so many records and no one showed up and said, ‘Hey, would you like to make another one?’”

Because we’re the survivors, and we’re not just the survivors; we’re the thrivers,” Hill added. She released Miseducation in 1998, marking her only solo album release. A year later, it became the first hip-hop project to win Album of the Year at the Grammys.

Lauryn Hill Postpones Philly Show On Advice From Doctors

While Ms. Lauryn Hill is a certified rap and R&B legend, she’s developed a reputation for unpredictable live performances. She’s often either showing up hours late to shows or just canceling them entirely. That included an entire planned tour last year where The Fugees planned on reuniting to celebrate the anniversary of their classic album The Score. Lauryn is currently on tour with Fugees again, this time celebrating the 25th anniversary of her landmark solo album The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill.

Hill is about halfway through the tour and the unreliability of her live appearances has popped up again. She was scheduled to play a show in Philadelphia tonight, but just announced on social media that it was delayed. “It is with disappointment that I am writing this note to you. On the advice of my physicians, I have no choice but to postpone the show tomorrow. I need to rest my voice to prevent any more serious strain or damage to my vocal cords,” her statement reads. She goes on to express how enjoyable the tour has been up to this point. The statement concludes by confirming to fans that she will be back next month on November 25. Last month fans who turned up for Lauryn Hill’s Global Citizen Festival performance got a nice surprise. The Fugees also turned up there for another surprise re-uniting that absolutely thrilled fans in attendance. The trio unpacked some of their classic hits like “Killing Me Softly With His Song” and “Ready Or Not” with videos of their performance swirling online.

That isn’t the only festival Lauryn has played this year. Back in June, she took the stage at Essence Festival to headline the shows Friday slot. Lauryn Hill & Fugees Add More Dates To “Miseducation” 25th Anniversary Tour

Lauryn Hill has added several new dates for her The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill tour with the Fugees. A total of ten new cities have been added, including Vancouver, San Francisco, and Atlanta. The tour will now run from October 3 in Melbourne, Australia through December 13 in Boston, Massachusetts.

“I’ve almost felt compelled to carry a torch or to keep a light shining regarding the continual performance of the Miseducation album,” Hill said in a press statement, as noted by The Fader. “I believe there’s been a reason for that—and the Fugees coming back together for performances too feels like unfinished business we’re destined to handle. The connections are real and uncanny, and the magic and synergy between us has not been deterred by time.”
