7 Rapper’s Jobs Before the Fame: Method Man, Nicki Minaj & More

Rapper’s jobs before the fame can be surprising, fitting, or even random. Many artists had humble beginnings in the workforce. They needed money to pay for studio time, equipment, and other resources to start their music careers. Or, if music was not their end goal at the time, they just needed money to survive in the world.

Many rappers had retail jobs and had to interact with multiple people daily. For more eccentric artists, one wonders if their personalities brought in more customers. Either way, successful rappers are often walking testimonies for sticking to your goals in life. They overlap when advising this, but the results are right before our eyes. We’ve gathered seven rappers who had humble beginnings in the workforce and are now household names.

Method Man – Statue of Liberty

This rapper’s job before fame is interestingly fitting because their home state is well known. Method Man is a member of the Wu-Tang Clan and, therefore, a part of rap royalty. Fellow New York rapper Dave East portrays him in Hulu’s Wu-Tang: An American Saga, and Method Man has several acting roles of his own under his belt. But, before all of this, he had truly humble and fitting beginnings.

Method Man once had a job working at the Statue of Liberty. However, he never went to the top because he did not have enough time to while on break. This reasoning is practical but still ironic. When people work at landmarks, they are there to work – not enjoy it as a tourist. Meth spoke on it and more while on The Late Late Show with James Corden as Gabrielle Union reacted to all of his stories.

Ab-Soul – Magic Disc Music (Music Store)

This is a rapper’s job before fame that is surprising just as it is fitting. It’s always interesting to see artists that had jobs in the music world become a part of it differently. Ab-Soul used to work at his grandfather’s record shop, Magic Disc Music. He briefly discussed this job in an interview in 2012 with Billboard and mentioned it in his song “Tree of Life” from his 2014 album, These Days.

However, he truly went in depth with expanding his experience there in an interview with NOISEY in 2013. Soul has always been an artist that was willing to share his origins. He often shares stories of the past through his music, too, which many listeners enjoy because it humanizes him and makes him more than just another rapper.

Kid Cudi – BAPE

Kid Cudi has always been a go-to artist for streetwear and its surrounding culture. His once having a job at the Bape NYC Store is not surprising, and it is very fitting. In an interview on Hot Ones, Cudi spoke about how at the time, getting that job meant more to him than getting a record deal.

This job came full circle for Cudi in three different ways. For one, he performed there as an artist in 2010. Then he did a joint cover story with NIGO, Bape’s founder, for Complex in 2019. Lastly, he did an official collaboration with the brand in 2021. This journey shows you truly never know how much of an impact your first job can have.

Tyler, The Creator – Starbucks

This is one of the most surprising jobs a rapper had before fame. Tyler, The Creator has always been a unique artist. His personality naturally commands attention, and his on-stage energy is unmatched – and unbridled. The over-the-top days of Odd Future are over, but they are a vital part of his past. His job at Starbucks is also a key part of his past. Listeners can imagine how distracting it must have been to have Tyler on their shift. He prides himself on making music the way he wants when he wants. It’s quite interesting to think of him in a setting where there is a chain of command. He even told a story about getting fired while on Jimmy Kimmel Live! – and (jokingly) declared he still hated his manager for firing him.

Nicki Minaj – Red Lobster

Nicki Minaj has not tried to keep her origins a secret. Many people know she used to work at Red Lobster. She spoke of specifically working at one in New York. Nicki Minaj’s personality and speaking voice are well known at this point. It’s interesting to think about her in a setting where she had to speak with people daily as a waitress. Nicki said she was not the best at that job specifically and being there unhappy helped steer her into her rap career. In a literal trip down memory lane, Nicki and Jimmy Fallon went to a Red Lobster as customers, and then they served real customers as waiters.

Rick Ross – Correctional Officer

People across social media have called Rick Ross “Officer Ricky” for his entire career. This is done jokingly with a splash of insult too. Rick Ross’ exuberant lifestyle can be seen across various videos these days, but he, like most people, started with a regular job. Rick Ross used to be a Correctional Officer. Given the subject matter of Rozay’s raps about his past, this revelation had people simultaneously laughing and questioning.

When a picture of Ross in uniform began circulating in 20xx, he denied it was him. Of course, he later admitted it was after documentation records proved it. He discussed his time at this job in detail on the Full Send Podcast. He denied it initially shows he was trying to hide his past, unlike our other entries.

Diddy – Intern

This rapper’s job before fame may be the down-to-earth journey – at its core – on this list. Diddy went from being an intern for Andre Harrell to becoming the mogul we know today. For many, this is an inspiring story. Despite his literal name changes, Diddy has made himself a household name across the decades. For some, he’ll always be Biggie’s manager; to others, he’ll always be the founder of Bad Boy Records.

His managerial skills have been criticized, but he has been making business moves (which have also been attacked) for years. He’s reached the point where he can advise a new generation of artists because he has seen the music industry change in real-time. Many people have praised Diddy’s work ethic over the years and the results speak for themselves.

Method Man Shows Love To GloRilla

While Method Man isn’t super tuned in to what’s hot in hip-hop music right now, he did reveal one artist that’s always playing in his household. Moreover, HipHopDX caught up with the Wu-Tang Clan legend while on the red carpet for the 2023 Grammy Awards. In a newly surfaced clip from the publication, Jeremy Hecht asked Mef what new artist he was listening to at the time, and his answer might surprise some fans. Furthermore, he expressed that he doesn’t listen to too many new things in hip-hop these days, especially as he became successful in other entertainment areas. However, he gave a big shoutout to Memphis’ own GloRilla, who he says is in heavy rotation in his home.

“I don’t really listen to much [of] today’s music,” Method Man replied to Hecht’s question. “But right now, who’s relevant in my household? Who they playing in my house? Glo.” In addition, he revealed that GloRilla apparently didn’t know who he was when they met. Still, she remained graceful, respectful, and kind during their interaction, which the Long Island legend appreciated. “That speaks volumes to her character. Love her.”

Method Man Shouts Out GloRilla At The Grammys

Of course, the Grammys red carpet also had other rap legends speak on the “Tomorrow 2” star, most notably Grandmaster Flash. HipHopDX actually got his very first reaction to her smash hit “F.N.F.,” as the Furious Five legend admitted that his children tried to get him to listen to her. As he heard the song, he bobbed his head along and took note of her blunt, boastful lyrics. “Okay GloRilla! This s**t sounds like fun too,” he said of the track. “She’s talking s**t and she’s having fun which is what Hip Hop should be. Word up! Okay, my kids… They were right.”

Meanwhile, all three artists formed part of the grand tribute to hip-hop at the awards ceremony, which celebrated the genre’s 50th anniversary. These remarks actually fit quite well within that context, as generations come together to celebrate each other’s greatness and importance in the game. After a lot of discussion in the 2010s decade about the old guard against the new, it’s great to see them in a more respectful and appreciative space. Regardless, come back to HNHH for the latest news and updates on Method Man and GloRilla.

Method Man Dances Along With ASL Interpreter

Wu-Tang Clan just graced New Orleans, Louisiana with a stellar performance at the New Orleans Jazz And Heritage Festival. Moreover, all members (including Raekwon, RZA, GZA, U-God, and more) seemed to have a great time on stage as some of their best hits played. In particular, the crowd and the crew were really feeling their rendition of the classic “Can It All Be So Simple.” In fact, Method Man was very impressed with the American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter that helped them throughout the show. He had such a great time watching her do her thing that he danced along, imitating her hand motions and observing her with a big smile on his face.

Given his incredible catalog and wide range of experience in many industries, it’s always an event when Method Man is on stage. However, many fans were disappointed when he said he wouldn’t join the rest of the Wu for their “N.Y. State Of Mind” tour last year. While many thought that they wouldn’t get to hear his iconic verses live, fans in Newark, New Jersey got a special treat. Both Meth and Redman popped out to perform “Da Rockwilder,” “Wu-Tang Clan Ain’t Nuthing ta F**k Wit,” and “M.E.T.H.O.D. Man.”

Method Man Vibes Out With Sign Language Interpreter

On that note of extracurriculars, the 52-year-old got a lot of praise for his acting work on 50 Cent’s “Power Book II: Ghost.” That praise actually prepared him to deal with criticism as well, advice that he wanted to share with his peers. For example, Yung Miami recently got flamed for her performance on another G-Unit show, “BMF.” After she responded to some haters and the discussion went viral, Method Man chimed in with some blunt advice.

F**k people,” he told a reported from TMZ who caught up with him and asked about the phenomenon. “People are mean. White noise, white noise. I love the City Girls, they’re dope.” Overall, it’s great to see the rapper lend a hand to the next generation. Clearly, he’s all about enjoying the moment and being proud of your work, and he shares that pride to and with others quite often, as this viral clip shows. Method Man Was Visibly In Awe Of A Sign Language Interpreter At The New Orleans Jazz And Heritage Festival

Method Man‘s music has stood the test of time. Whether it be as a solo act or as a member of the Wu-Tang Clan, Method Man has a catalog of songs that are universally loved.

Yesterday (April 28) at the New Orleans Jazz And Heritage Festival, Wu-Tang Clan performed an electrifying set that encapsulated several of their classics. During a performance of Wu-Tang Clan’s “Can It All Be So Simple,” Method was feeling the beat of the music and the energy from the audience. Also displaying vibrant energy was Method’s sign language interpreter, who was visibly getting into the song.

In a fan-captured video, Method quickly catches wind of the sign language interpreter and is visibly in awe of how quickly she signs to the beat.

This isn’t the first time an interpreter has gone viral for getting into the music during a live performance. Back in FebruaryRihanna’s sign language interpreter was the talk of the internet after she signed perfectly on beat to Rih’s music, while busting some dance moves.

And of course, we’ve all seen the viral video of Waka Flocka Flame grooving along with his interpreter (who appears to be the same woman at the Wu-Tang performance) after confusing her signing for dancing.

You can check out a clip of Method Man’s performance above.

Slick Rick, Queen Latifah, And De La Soul Top The Rock The Bells Lineup For 2023

Rock The Bells has returned! The long-running hip-hop festival, which originally focused on legacy and underground rap acts, was basically defunct for the past ten years. However, that was until the rapper whose song the festival is named after revived the festival last year. The man born Todd Smith revealed the full lineup for the 2023 festival today with a trailer reproducing scenes from headliner Queen Latifah’s 1996 film debut Set It Off (this is a trend), showing the only thing that changed is the coast (the original Rock The Bells took place in California, and so featured more West Coast artists).

The lineup for this year’s festival (“don’t call it a comeback”) includes Big Daddy Kane, Boot Camp Clik, De La Soul, Fabolous, Ludacris, MC Lyte, MC Sha Rock, Method Man & Redman, Monie Love, Rakim, Roxanne Shanté, Salt-n-Pepa, Slick Rick, Swizz Beatz and friends, The Cold Crush Brothers, and Yo-Yo. In addition, the festival will feature a tribute to the late Sean Price by the members of Boot Camp Clik, including his widow Bernadette Price, as well as a set honoring the pioneering women of hip-hop who are often ignored.

The 2023 Rock The Bells Festival will take place on Saturday, August 5, 2023, at Forest Hills Stadium in Queens, New York. You can get more information here.

Lloyd Banks Unloads “The Course Of The Inevitable 3: Pieces Of My Pain”

Leave it to someone like Lloyd Banks to break a hiatus during a global pandemic. The G-Unit rapper stands as one of the most underrated rappers of all time, but that’s largely due to the fact that he didn’t consistently release music. However, he emerged in 2021 with the release of The Course Of The Evitable, the first of a three-part series of albums. Banks found a groove alongside equally competent MCs for his first full-length album in eleven years.

The Course Of The Inevitable 2 dropped last year but Banks revealed that he was working on the “ultimate album” afterward. He didn’t provide much information about it but finally, the third installment in the COTI series arrived. The Course Of The Inevitable 3: Pieces Of My Pain appeared on all streaming platforms this morning. The 16-song effort boasts features from Method Man, Cormega, Vado, Tony Yayo, 38 Spesh, and Dave East. Meanwhile, production hails from Cartune Beatz, George Getson, V Don, Haas Almxhdi, and more.

The Return Of Lloyd Banks

The Course Of The Inevitable 3: Pieces Of My Pain brings out the best in Lloyd Banks at a time when New York’s golden age made a return with artists like Griselda, who’ve collaborated with the G-Unit rapper in the past. Cartune Beatz, specifically, crafts beats that perfectly fit Banks’ gruff, punchline-driven flow. Hopefully, Lloyd Banks will maintain this level of consistency in the years to come.

The rapper kicked off the campaign for COTI3 with the release of “101 Razors” ft. Method Man. Of course, Meth hasn’t necessarily been the most active musically but Banks managed to squeeze a verse out of him. Shortly after, he revealed that the collaboration was a full-circle moment for him. The COTI rapper shared a childhood drawing of Method Man. “I used to sit in school..write raps and draw pictures of my favorite artist..and at around 11-12 years old..this was one of them,” he wrote. “now in 2023 we actually have a record together!!!!! Unbelievable!!!!” Check COTI 3 above and let us know how you feel about Lloyd Banks latest project. Where does the new project stand in his catalog?
