Jamila Woods Links Up With Saba For Incredible Single, “Practice”

One of the most underrated singers and songwriters from Chicago, Illinois is back with one more taster from her upcoming album. The artist we are referring to is the 34-year-old Jamila Woods. It will be her third album in her roughly six-year career. It is a follow-up to her sophomore record from 2019, LEGACY! LEGACY! That is quite a long gap between releases, but Jamila is clearly being very meticulous with Water Made Us. It is slated to be out this Friday, October 13.

It is shaping up to be one of the busiest Fridays for new music this year. While there is a chance that it does not rack up a ton of streams, we know the quality will be exquisite. So far, Jamila has proved that to be the case with the singles leading up to the 13th. Our first taste of the direction she seems to be going in was with “Tiny Garden” back in July. Following that, we got “Boomerang,” which was a sad and gorgeous track at the same time. Then, on September 13, Woods released “Good News.”

One of the better lyricists of this generation, he is also a Chicago kid. That connection shines through as both bring cute and witty performances about a relationship just getting started. Jamila’s project is shaping up to be something special.

We don’t gotta hurry up (Hurry up)
You ain’t gotta be the one (Be the one)
We were just rehearsin’ babe, you know this ain’t the game

Jamila Woods’ Ethereal ‘Good News’ Was Actually The Inspiration Behind Her Third Album’s Title

On October 13, Chicago soul singer-songwriter Jamila Woods will release her third studio album, Water Made Us. The album’s title, which refers to the way water “always runs back where it came from,” is inspired by a line from one of its songs, “Good News” — a song Woods shared today as the project’s third single.

In a press release, Woods explained how the lyric inspired the album’s title, saying, “The title of the album comes from one of the lyrics: ‘The good news is we were happy once / The good news is water always runs back where it came from / The good news is water made us.’ For me the song is a lesson in surrender, a lesson I learn from water over and over again.”

“Good News” was preceded by “Boomerang,” an upbeat dance track. In contrast, “Good News” is a slow, mellow track with a sinuous bassline backing ethereal instrumentation and Woods’ reflection on the duality and cyclical nature of life. “I take it back, the words I said / That cast a cloud over my head,” she sings. “I’ll make it back to where I been.”

Water Made Us is also a reference to the Toni Morrison quote, “All water has a perfect memory and is forever trying to get back to where it was.” It’s a hopeful message, that all is as it should be and will eventually end up where it’s meant to. This theme will be expressed throughout the album’s 17 tracks, which will feature duendita, Peter CottonTale, and Saba. You can find more info here.

Jamila Woods’ “Boomerang” Is Beautiful Yet Sad

Jamila Woods has been blessing our ears for a few years now, going all the way back to her debut album HEAVN. Her blends of soul and R&B are delicate, beautiful, and overall are a joy to listen to every time she comes through with new material. She also released another single this year titled “Tiny Garden,” which is the lead song to her third album to come out this fall. Now we have another new track called “Boomerang.”

This stunning ballad is one of uncertainty and wanting this person to love them back. Woods’ vocals are pretty and whimsical as they usually are. Jamila Woods’ Mesmerizing ‘Boomerang’ Video Tells A Love Story Shot In Reverse

Jamila Woods is back with a new song, “Boomerang,” ahead of her next album, Water Made Us. Co-written by Woods, Nao, Grades, and George Moore, the track is propelled by a hypnotizing synth instrumental.

“I’m giving you it all or nothing at all / I’m waiting for your call and hoping you fall for me,” she adds a romantic spin to the lyrics.

“I think you really wanna dance with me / How could you really wanna dance with me? / Do you really wanna dance?” Woods then continues to ask, doubling as a question for both the lover and listener.

She leans into the free-spirited and fun aspects of the song in the music video, which is played in reverse, as she goes from a laundromat to a glamorous costume in a bar. By the end, she is performing front and center on a stage.

In a statement, Woods revealed “about that kind of relationship that keeps popping back up throughout your life, that magnetic attachment you have to someone and the excitement and anxiety that comes with wondering ‘will we or won’t we?’”

“We shot it entirely in reverse at the Chicago Magic Lounge, which is known for its portals and hidden rooms,” she added about the video. “The incredible burlesque artist Po Chop directed the movement and helped me learn all the choreo forwards and backwards, quite literally.”
