Ice Cube Announces Big3 Docuseries

In 2017, Ice Cube announced the formation of Big3. The Big3 is a 3-on-3 basketball league featuring former NBA stars and up-and-coming international players. The league features 12 teams, all helmed by former NBA players. The 2023 season is set to begin in June.

The league has a lot of star power, both on and off the court. With Ice Cube as the founder, former NBA legend Cylde Drexler serves as the commissioner. Players include Mario Chalmers, Rashard Lewis, Serbian 3×3 star Dušan Bulut, and Nick Young. Trilogy, coached by NBA journeyman Stephen Jackson and captained by James White, are the two-time defending champions.

Ice Cube Reveals Docuseries

Ice Cube has announced that fans will now get an in-depth look at the league in a new docuseries. The series will look at the trial and tribulations behind the league, including the obstacles Cube has faced to get the stature that the league has accrued. Furthermore, the series will not shy away from the legal battle the league waged against Qatari investors in 2018. Big3 sued the Qatar-based investment fund for $1.2 billion over claims that the investors were trying to meddle in and influence the league. The series will also highlight the tense relationship that the league has had with the NBA over the years. This has primarily been a result of drawing international players away from the league.

Additionally, the untitled docuseries will follow one team as they battle for a championship. This is a tried-and-tested format, best seen in HBO’s Hard Knocks series about the NFL. In announcing the documentary, Cube revealed why it was the right time to do so. “We have tremendous momentum going into the sixth season, coming off of record ratings and numerous sold out games. We’ve been making moves this offseason – getting certified by ByBlack, renewing with CBS, and recruiting and signing all-star players – to put together the best season yet and we can’t wait to show these cities what the BIG3 is all about.” It is unknown where the series will debut, but the Big3 currently has broadcasting deals with CBS and Paramount+. O’Shea Jackson Jr. Trolls Ice Cube With Masterful Reference

It Was A Good Day is an Ice Cube classic. Released as a single in February 1993 and later featured on The Predator, it charted at #15 on the Billboard Hot 100. It also topped the Billboard Hot Rap Songs and finished at #78 on the year-end Billboard Hot 100. The song sees Ice Cube talking about an uncharacteristically good day in LA.

One of the most memorable parts of the song is Ice Cube talking about playing a game of basketball with some friends. “Called up the homies, and I’m askin’ y’all/ Which park, are y’all playin’ basketball?/ Get me on the court and I’m trouble/ Last week fucked around and got a triple-double/ Freakin’ n-ggas every way like MJ.” However, not everyone is apparently familiar with the song, as Ice Cube’s son was able to have a little fun with it on Twitter.

Ice Cube Trolled By His Son

O’Shea Jackson Jr. has followed in his father’s footsteps and is already putting together a strong acting resume. He starred as his father in 2015’s Straight Outta Compton. He has also appeared in 2017’s Ingrid Goes West, 2018’s Longshot, 2019’s Godzilla: King of Monsters, and 2023’s Cocaine Bear. Jackson also stars in Apple TV’s Kevin Durant-inspired Swagger and Disney+’s Kenobi. However, Jackson is also known for being an excellent Twitter troll. His pinned tweet currently reads “I’ve decided that I will randomly copy people’s tweets right under the original tweet. Just to cause chaos and confusion.” Truly iconic stuff.

On April 13, Jackson quote-tweeted user @feyiszn who had asked “tell us one thing about ur Dad.” (the tweet was not directed at Jackson, for clarification). Jackson’s perfect response read, “He once kept up with his statistics during a random pickup game with his friends. And he won’t stop telling people about it.” This, of course, is a call back to It Was A Good Day and Ice Cube’s bragging about his triple-double. It’s not the first time, It Was A Good Day has been in the news recently. In early March, Ice Cube called out Logic for a surprisingly intimate cover of the song.

Chris Tucker Fondly Remembers Working With Bernie Mac & John Witherspoon On “Friday”

Ice Cube showcased his range as an actor when Friday dropped. The iconic stoner comedy dropped in 1995 and boasted a star cast including Chris Tucker in the supporting role of Smokey, the late John Witherspoon as Willie Jones, and Tiny “Zeus” Lister Jr. as Deebo. Unfortunately, in recent years, both Witherspoon and Lester Jr. have passed away, along with several other members of the cast, such as Bernie Mac, Reynaldo Rey, and Yvette Wilson.

During a recent appearance on GQ, Chris Tucker reflected on his first “co-starring role,” praising director Gary F. Grey and recounting his experience alongside several of his cast mates. “Tiny Zeus Lister, I don’t know if I mentioned him when he passed away. One of my good friends, the legendary Tiny Zeus Lister, who played Deebo. Casting him as like, the big villain coming like the shark from Jaws,” he said. Lister Jr. passed away at 62 in 2020 from hypertension and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.

Chris Tucker Looks Back At “Friday”

Along with Tiny Lister, Tucker also reflected on working alongside the talents such as Witherspoon, Bernie Mac, Rey, and Wilson. “The legendary iconic John Witherspoon,” Tucker continued, “and Bernie Mac. Those guys, comedy legends and gods, man. You had Reynaldo Rey, and Yvette Wilson. So many legends that was in this movie that passed away. I’m so, so honored to have worked with them.”

Chris Tucker only appeared in the first Friday film before Mike Epps took over in the supporting role as Craig’s cousin, Day Day. However, fans have undoubtedly hoped that Smokey would return to the screen. During a recent interview with Audacy’s V-103, he said that he’d be willing to join the cast of Last Friday as long as the script’s to his liking. “I love that they did two more after the one I did. If it’s possible, if it comes together right, I would try to do it. I’m a perfectionist, I’m sorry. If it ain’t gonna be great – I don’t believe in ‘some movies are good, some are not.’ Nah, I’m going all the way; I want it to be great.”

Ice Cube Praises Stephen A. Smith’s Pinky Impression

Ice Cube has one of the most renowned careers around. From his time with N.W.A. to his solo work to his cinematic pursuits, Mr. Cube has done it all. He is a six-time platinum solo artist and many of his films have become pop culture staples. Almost everyone can name at least one Ice Cube performance.

The renaissance man recently sat down with Stephen A. Smith on the podcast Know Mercy to discuss his life and career. The conversation also focused heavily on Cube’s cinematic work. However, Smith was very keen to know how Cube felt about a homage Smith did on First Take to one of Cube’s best-known films.

Ice Cube Loved And Appreciated Smith’s Pinky

Next Friday, written and starring Ice Cube, was the 2000 sequel to Cube’s 1995 film, Friday. After the events of the first film, Cube’s slacker protagonist Craig has relocated to Rancho Cucamonga. Instead of Chris Tucker’s Smokey, Craig is now joined by his cousin, Mike Epps’ Day-Day. An incredibly memorable side character in the film is Pinky, the flamboyant record store owner who Day-Day works for. Pinky, with his iconic hairdo and bright pink suit, was brought to life by legendary character actor Clifton Powell.

Cube spoke at length about how impactful it has been to see the long-standing legacy of his cinematic work. After hearing his reflection, Smith asked him what he thought of his recent impression of Pinky on First Take. “Y’all killed that.” Cube said of Smith’s impression, “You know, when you see that, you want to see full commitment. And y’all gave full commitment. And it’s fun to see that things you’ve done are so iconic that even today, they work and people love to see them and do them and bring those characters back to life.” It’s clear just how passionate Ice Cube is about the work he created, and the impact it still has nearly 30 years later. Everyone can’t help but be concerned about their legacy. However, for Ice Cube, both in music and film, he evidently finds so much joy in that people still enjoy the work he created.

Today In Hip Hop History: The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack for ‘Friday’ Dropped 28 Years Ago

Screen Shot 2023 04 11 at 8.20.12 AM

On this day in Hip Hop history, the cult classic comedy Friday soundtrack was released by 550 Music and Epic Records. The album peaked at #1 on the Billboard 200 chart, where it stood for two weeks, and #1 on the Top R&B/Hip Hop chart, where it stood for six weeks. The album was just as commercially successful as the film and was certified double platinum only two months later.

During the 90s, it seemed that every soundtrack was a hit and the Friday soundtrack followed suit. With tracks from Ice Cube, Scarface, Dr. Dre, Cypress Hill, and 2 Live Crew, the album stacked up to be an amazing compilation of original tracks and poppin’ radio singles. At the same time, the addition of a few throwbacks from The Isley Brothers, Bootsy Collins, and Rick James gave the album surprising depth and a sense of nostalgia. Dr. Dre’s original single for the film, “Keep Their Head Ringing,” was able to see great success due to this soundtrack. It ranked at #10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and #1 on the Hot Rap Tracks chart. It was certified gold by the RIAA in May 1995.

[WATCH Mack 10 On Ice Cube: ‘I Ain’t Seen Him Or Talked To Him In Damn Near 20 Years’

Screen Shot 2023 03 19 at 10.22.16 AM

Rapper Mack 10 recently had an interview with Bootleg Kev, and revealed that he has neither seen nor spoken to Ice Cube, in almost 20 years.

When asked whether there is a possibility for a future reunion, he said, “I f*** with who f***with me, you dig? That’s where I’m at with it. If you f*** with me, I f*** with you. But if it’s f*** me, it’s f*** you. I ain’t seen him or talked to him in damn near 20 years, so there it is.”

Kev then brought up the classic Westside Connection collaboration to which Mack said he chooses not to “rock with” anyone who picks issues with him.

“It ain’t never been me, you know, with the hold-up,” he added. “It ain’t never been my personality or who I am with the hold-up of us doing something. … But I f*** with who f*** with me; it is what it is.”

When asked if he listened to Cube’s new supergroup Mount Westmore featuring Snoop Dogg, E-40 and Too Short. His response was, “Not really,” Mack replied. “I mean, I’ve heard bits and pieces of it, but not really. Westside Connection was a movement; it was a little different.”

Westside Connection broke up around 2005 following the fallout between Ice Cube and Mack 10. The two have never openly spoken about the cause of their fallout. However, in a VladTV interview in 2020, Mack seemed to suggest that it had something with Cube’s brother-in-law “f***[ing] my money up.”

He said, “It was just an unfortunate situation as far as what came out of all that. It ain’t like that just happened. … I went to Cube about four or five times before the conflict jumped off and told him to correct the situation. That’s the part that everybody leaves out.” He clarified that he and Cube only verbally argued over the ordeal.

Watch the interview below.
